7. Strage and Handling It is very imprtant that this prduct is stred and handled crrectly t prevent degradatin and the ptential fr perfrmance reductin. 7.1 Prduct Safety Always cnsult the latest Material Data Safety Sheet, r Safety Data Sheet, as apprpriate t yur lcal jurisdictin, befre handling this prduct. Take all necessary steps t ensure that this prduct is used safely and in an envirnmentally respnsible manner cnsistent with all applicable regulatins at yur lcatin. Because regulatins and use cnditins are subject t change by gvernment, state, prvincial and lcal authrities, it is the user s respnsibility t determine that available infrmatin is apprpriate and suitable under current, applicable laws and regulatins. The custmer shuld prvide all applicable infrmatin t its emplyees, cntractrs, and custmers, r any ther users f the prduct(s), and request that they d the same. Areas sprayed with glycl based prducts may becme slippery. Use cautin while perating equipment r walking n areas expsed t these prducts. Even areas nly affected by verspray r dripping shuld be treated with the same cautin. Befre yu enter vehicles, aircraft r buildings, wipe yur feet and be aware that vehicles, and even ft traffic, can cause ther areas t becme slippery. If vacuum trucks are available, they can remve excess accumulatins n the grund. If further grund cleanup is required using slid r absrbent materials, ensure that it is quickly remved and dispsed f in accrdance with the regulatins in frce at yur lcatin. 7.2 Strage Vessels Bulk deliveries f Lift-Off P-88 shuld nly be stred in well-maintained tanks. These can be made frm carbn steel, cated carbn steel, aluminum, stainless steel r light clred paque high density plyethylene (dark clrs can generate higher internal tank temperatures due t sunlight expsure). Other materials may be cnsidered subject t AllClear apprval n a case by case basis.
When supplied in ttes and drums, it is preferable fr them t be stred inside a dry building with all fill and drain prts prtected against damage. They shuld be kept away frm direct heat surces and ttes shielded frm flurescent lights. If this is nt pssible, they shuld be fully cvered ver t prevent expsure t Ultravilet light (UV); cmmn UV surces are sunlight and flurescent lights. Lift-Off P-88 is nt crrsive and will nt damage materials cmmnly used fr strage tanks, pumps, fittings and transfer lines, as well as many gasket, seal and hse elastmers. Avid using dissimilar metals in cntact with each ther as galvanic actin can ccur, which may degrade the fluid. Sme, but nt all, symptms f galvanic actin ccurring may be the presence f gels r light residues. 7.3 Piping and Hses All piping and hses shuld be dedicated slely fr use with this prduct, clearly labelled and well maintained. A minimum pipe r hse diameter f 3 inches is recmmended. Fixed piping can be made frm the metals listed in Sectin 7.2, with care being taken again regarding the use f dissimilar metals and the ptential fr galvanic actin t degrade the fluid. Piping shuld be well maintained and the surfaces shuld be smth with sharp bends being avided. Flexible hses apprved fr use with either petrleum-based prducts r chemical slvents shuld be used. Hse fittings shuld be capped when nt in use and stred ff the grund t keep them free frm cntaminants. 7.4 Pumping and Handling Lift-Off P-88 can be transferred with varius cmmercially available pumps types, such as gear, centrifugal, diaphragm and prgressive cavity withut affecting its perfrmance. At clder temperatures mre pwerful pumps may be needed due t the assciated increase in prduct viscsity. 7.5 Maintaining Prduct Integrity Ensure that strage r deicing unit tanks are clean, dry and stain free prir t initially filling with Lift-Off P-88. D nt mix Lift-Off P-88 with any ther
prduct. Keep tank access hatches and fill/dispense prts prperly clsed and sealed t prevent ingress f freign matter. Once Lift-Off P-88 has been laded int the deicing equipment, it must nt be transferred back int a strage vessel that cntains fresh Lift-Off P-88. This will prevent the pssibility f cntaminatin in the deicing applicatin equipment frm degrading the fresh prduct in the strage vessel. Lift-Off P-88 Cncentrate must be stred unheated. Lift-Off P-88 Type I dilutins are stred unheated, hwever, t reduce heating time when preparing fr a deicing event, it is permissible t pre-heat it t a maximum f 60 C (140 F), either in a strage facility r in the deicing truck. Avid unnecessary standby heating as water evapratin may cause an increase in glycl cncentratin r a change in ph. Evapratin can be reduced by keeping tank access hatches clsed, althugh yu must ensure that tank vents are pen t prevent a pressure buildup. Verify the refractin regularly t make sure that the deicing fluid strength and freezing pint are within the acceptable range fr the cnditins under which it will be used. Water lss due t evapratin can nrmally be crrected by thrughly mixing clean water directly int the tank. Test again t ensure that the required fluid strength, freezing pint and ph (if necessary) are achieved. Excessive heating can als induce thermal degradatin f the prduct. Thermal degradatin. A lwering f ph r an increase in glycl cncentratin (increase in refractin) r disclratin are indicative f thermal degradatin. The dye in Lift-Off P-88 is designed t degrade upn expsure t UV light, causing the prduct clr t gradually fade. While the deicing prperties f the prduct will be maintained, the lack f clr will make it mre difficult t determine where the fluid has been sprayed. If the integrity f the prduct is in dubt, cntact AllClear Systems. 7.6 Strage Stability Prvided that strage requirements are adhered t, under nrmal ambient cnditins the shelf life f Lift-Off P-88 will exceed ne year. It is recmmended that, at a minimum, prduct samples are quality tested against AllClear specificatins prir t use at the start f each deicing seasn.
Yur cmpany may specify that a mre frequent schedule is adpted. Refer t yur apprved Grund Icing Operatins Prgram fr testing requirements. 8. Prduct Delivery Acceptance Prir t accepting prduct delivery, cnfirm that: all delivery vessel prt caps are secured and lcked with individually identifiable tamper prf seals that match the delivery dcumentatin. all delivery dcumentatin/labelling refers t Lift-Off P-88 Cncentrate. the prduct cmplies with the test parameters described n the delivery Certificate f Analysis, in accrdance with the scpe f yur cmpany prduct acceptance requirements. The fllwing table summarizes the acceptance criteria n the Certificate f Analysis. 10 9. Prduct Usage 9.1 Intrductin Aircraft manufacturers typically prvide recmmendatins fr deicing and anti-icing their aircraft mdels. Additinally, aviatin regulatrs, such as the Federal Aviatin Administratin and Transprt Canada require aircraft peratrs t have an apprved Grund Icing Operatins Prgram. Industry practices published by The Sciety f Autmtive Engineers (SAE) are frequently used as the basis fr these prgrams and may be cnsidered as a gd surce f general infrmatin. Additinally, envirnmental cnsideratins may need t be adpted depending n Federal, State, Prvincial and Lcal agency requirements in place at the applicatin lcatin. NOTE: All references within this dcument t 3 rd party infrmatin were crrect at the time f this dcument s publicatin. As with any aircraft deicing r anti-icing prcess, use nly persnnel wh have been trained in the use f Lift-Off P-88 in accrdance with the requirements f yur apprved Grund Icing Operatins Prgram. Persnnel shuld als be kept up t date n revised Lift-Off P-88 technical material as prvided frm time t time by AllClear Systems. 9.2 Definitins Check current SAE dcumentatin first fr crrectness and a full list f definitins, but sme representative examples f terms cmmnly used when perating an aircraft in grund icing cnditins are: "Anti-icing" A prcedure by which fluid is applied t prvide prtectin against the frmatin f frst r ice r the accumulatin f snw r slush n treated surfaces f an aircraft fr a limited perid f time (Hldver Time). 13 Nte: The FAA and Transprt Canada Hldver Time dcuments, as well as the SAE AS6285 Aircraft Grund Deicing/Anti-Icing Prcesses dcument, all describe the use f a 10 C (18 F) Freezing Pint Buffer belw the Outside Air Temperature (OAT) when using SAE Type I deicing fluid in a single step prcess. Cnsult yur apprved Grund Icing Operatins Prgram fr prper use f this fluid. When reprting the fluid strength t aircraft flight crews, this might be stated as, AllClear Systems, Lift-Off P-88, Type I, at xx %. Refer t yur apprved Grund Icing Operatins Prgram fr cmmunicatin requirements Refractmeters While labratries use specialized equipment and prcedures t determine fluid refractive index, this is nt necessarily practical fr testing during winter peratins n the airprt. In the field, temperature-cmpensated, crrectly calibrated, prtable refractmeters are mre cnvenient fr peratinal usage. D nt use hydrmeters n AllClear Systems prducts. Cntact AllClear Systems fr guidance n btaining a suitable refractmeter mdel fr use with ur prducts. Ensure that yu cmply with the refractmeter manufacturer s requirements fr the maintenance and calibratin schedule f the selected refractmeter as well as its prper care and use. 9.4 Precautins a) D nt apply undiluted Lift-Off P-88 Cncentrate t an aircraft. Refer t Sectin 9.3 fr dilutin infrmatin t make an aqueus deicing fluid. b) Lift-Off P-88 aqueus deicing fluid slutin is nly t be applied heated and is recmmended fr applicatin n aircraft exterir surfaces nly. c) D nt use Lift-Off P-88 n: Helicpters (unless apprved by the helicpter manufacturer) Areas designated by the aircraft manufacturer as n spray znes. Refer t yur apprved Grund Icing Operatins Prgram fr details. Cmmn examples have histrically been, but are nt limited t, cckpit windws, aircraft brakes, engine/auxiliary pwer unit inlets and
exhausts, passenger r carg dr gaps, systems inlets r vents, instrument sensrs etc. Runways Pavement Radways Sidewalks Vehicles Grund Supprt Equipment. d) D nt use Lift-Off P-88 as antifreeze fr: Vehicles Grund Supprt Equipment Sanitary Water Facilities Aircraft r Prtable Lavatries. e) In recent years deicing truck manufacturers have ffered frced air applicatin systems as ptins n their equipment. These trucks may either inject deicing fluid int the airstream, r n tp f it. Cnsideratin shuld be given t the effect that this type f applicatin has n the integrity f SAE Type I fluids under active weather precipitatin cnditins. Industry guidance n the safe and efficient use f this equipment is available in SAE dcumentatin. 9.5 Applicatin Guidance The fllwing guidance is prvided fr general infrmatinal purpses nly. The user is respnsible fr crrect applicatin in accrdance with the apprved Grund Icing Operatins Prgram in effect. Always fllw the applicatin, usage and inspectin prcedures f the specific aircraft peratr, while ensuring cmpliance with the minimum acceptable requirements specified by the applicable gvernment regulatr. General Lift-Off P-88 Applicatin Tips: Applicatin temperature and velcity is critical in ensuring an efficient deicing prcess. Lift-Off P-88 shuld be heated t a temperature between 60 C
(140 F) t 82 C (180 F) when measured at the dispensing nzzle. The heat energy in the fluid will melt/break the bnd f frzen accumulatins adhering t the aircraft surface. The pressure energy used t spray the fluid will then disldge and flush away thse frzen accumulatins. CAUTION: Fluid temperature and pressure shall nt exceed aircraft maintenance manual requirements t avid causing damage t the aircraft. Yu shuld ensure that the fluid remaining n the surface has a freezing pint at least 10 C belw utside ambient temperature (OAT); hwever, if the aircraft surfaces have been cld saked then they may actually be clder than OAT requiring additinal cnsideratin in determining the freezing pint buffer temperatures. Befre starting, be aware f the n-spray znes fr the particular aircraft type yu will be wrking n. These shuld be described in yur Grund Icing Operatins Prgram. Apply the ht Lift-Off P-88 deicing fluid in sufficient quantity t cmpletely remve all frzen depsits frm all the areas required by yur Grund Icing Operatins prgram. Allw time fr fluid t wrk its way int gaps in the wing and Stabilizer cntrl surfaces. Smetimes it is necessary t cat an area with the ht fluid, then just let the heat energy sak int the packed snw, while yu spray anther area. When yu return, remve any disldged cntaminatin and repeat as necessary. CAUTION: During the deicing prcess, all SAE Type I fluids becme further diluted due t cntact with snw and ice meltwater as well as cntinuing precipitatin. This additinal dilutin may raise the fluid freezing pint t a pint where freezing can ccur n the aircraft surface. Inspect the aircraft t ensure that it is in cmpliance with the requirements f yur Grund Icing Operatins Prgram befre annuncing that the deicing is cmplete. Depending n the ambient cnditins present, different prcesses can be emplyed fr safe and efficient aircraft deicing.
One-Step Deicing/Anti-icing When a ne-step prcess is cnsidered suitable fr the prevailing r expected ambient and peratinal cnditins, it is accmplished using nly ht SAE Type I fluid. This prcess is typically used t remve frzen depsits frm the aircraft after the active precipitatin has ceased, r in weather cnditins where the estimated hldver time fr SAE Type I deicing fluid is sufficient fr safe take-ff. Apply ht Lift-Off P-88 Type I deicing fluid, at the cncentratin strength apprpriate fr the wrst weather cnditins expected befre take-ff. Clean the aircraft surfaces in accrdance with the prcedural and inspectin requirements f the apprved Grund Icing Operatins Prgram in effect fr the aircraft. SAE Type I fluids have a very limited capability f preventing refreezing and snw r ice buildup. If any dubt exists then prtectin time can be increased by using the tw-step prcess described belw. Tw-Step Deicing/Anti-icing A tw-step prcess is necessary when the prevailing r expected ambient and peratinal cnditins are beynd the safe hldver time perfrmance capabilities f just a Type I fluid. In this case, deicing is accmplished using ht SAE Type I, but it is immediately fllwed by an applicatin f an SAE Type II, III r IV anti-icing fluid (as apprpriate) t prvide the necessary hldver time prtectin. Cntact AllClear Systems fr infrmatin abut ur range f high perfrmance SAE anti-icing fluids. This prcess is generally used when frzen depsits are required t be remved frm the aircraft and active freezing precipitatin is either ccurring r expected befre take-ff. First step.
Secnd step. After the ht Type I applicatin has been satisfactrily cmpleted and the required aircraft surfaces are clean, apply unheated, undiluted SAE Type II, III r IV anti-icing fluid (as apprpriate) t the required aircraft surfaces befre any refreezing ccurs; typically within 3 minutes. Ensure that enugh is sprayed t adequately displace any Type I used in the first step and als t frm a layer f suitable thickness t prvide adequate prtectin. Refer t the apprved Grund Icing Operatins Prgram in effect fr details. Mnitring Fluid Effectiveness As with any SAE deicing r anti-icing fluid, cntinued expsure t precipitatin after applicatin will eventually cause the fluid t lse its effectiveness in preventing frzen cntaminatin frm refrming. It is imprtant that bth Flight and Grund persnnel are trained t recgnize when this might be abut t happen, r has happened. A fluid will typically start t lse its glssy lk when it is lsing its effectiveness. At this pint it may be clse t prviding inadequate prtectin, s it is imprtant t als lk fr signs f snw r ice accumulatin, surface freezing, build-up f ice crystals in r n the fluid, r the presence f slush. A pre-takeff check, r if necessary, a pre-takeff cntaminatin check is the nly way t determine if an aircraft is free f cntaminatin prir t take ff.
