Varius devices may be used, including chutes, slides, autmated systems, ejectrs, packagers, etc. 9 BELT AND DRUM CLEANING SYSTEMS Belt and drum cleaning systems remve material accumulatin frm belts and drums. These are ften scrapers and brushes. A scraper that is wrking prperly can: 10 CURVED ZONE save many hurs f cleanup, thus increasing efficiency reduce pssible damage t the belt frm buildup underneath reduce wrker expsure t hazards The curved zne is the area f the cnveyr where the belt is vertically curved. 11 TRANSITION ZONE The transitin zne is the cnveyr area where the prfile (crss) f the belt changes frm trughed t flattened and vice versa. 12 SHUNTING MECHANISMS Shunting mechanisms change lad directin. Varius devices may be used, including bumpers, pushers, ejectrs, etc. (see Figure 1-8). HAZARDS Hazards assciated with cnveyrs are principally mechanical in nature. They are discussed briefly belw. 6 Next 8/17/2018 Issuing Dept: Safety Page: Page 6 f 14 Pwer transmissin mving-part hazards: These hazards are assciated mainly with the pwer transmissin parts between the mtr and the drive (live) drum. They include shafts, cuplings, pulleys and drive belts, chains and sprckets (see Figure 1-5). Dragging, crushing r entanglement n cntact with rtating parts r pinch pints can result in serius injuries. Hazards assciated with ther mving parts f a cnveyr: These are assciated with the mving cnveyr belt and in-running nips when in cntact with rllers and drums, and t falling return rllers disldged frm wrn fasteners. These hazards can result in injuries t a wrker frm being dragged int in-running nips, r in abrasin and frictin burns frm rubbing against the belt, r in injuries frm being struck by a ruptured belt r a falling rller (see Figure 1-6). Cnfinement area hazards: Injuries result frm shearing and crushing between the lad, the cnveyr belt and a fixed bject, fr example, hpper, skirtbard r skirting (see Figure 1-6). Uncntrlled cpy if printed. Valid n day f printing nly. Printed n: 29 September 2017
Next 8/17/2018 Issuing Dept: Safety Page: Page 7 f 14 Mving-lad hazards: Injuries result frm shearing and crushing between the lad and a fixed bject. Injuries can als be caused by falling lads r impacts with lads (see Figure 1-7). Mving sub-assembly hazards: Injuries result frm shearing and crushing between the lad and a fixed bject, and ccur mainly with equipment that re-rients the lad (see Figure 1-8). HAZARD ASSESSMENT The diagram in Figure 2-1 illustrates an nging prcess fr hazard assessment and reductin t be cmpleted by the Safety Team and Plant Management. The fllwing guidelines will be helpful in hazard assessment, eliminatin and cntrl: Hazard assessment must be dne t identify existing and ptential hazards. Uncntrlled cpy if printed. Valid n day f printing nly. Printed n: 29 September 2017
Next 8/17/2018 Issuing Dept: Safety Page: Page 8 f 14 Identified hazards must be eliminated r reduced. The hazard assessment prcess must be dcumented and, shuld any changes in prcess ccur, repeated. Wrkers must be infrmed f all hazards, and all affected wrkers must be invlved in assessment, eliminatin and cntrl f hazards identified. Fr each hazard that cannt be eliminated r reduced by engineering r administrative cntrls, safeguards r prtective devices must be installed. CONVEYOR SAFEGUARDING Many danger znes exist in and arund cnveyr belts. Hazards are lcated in these danger znes. A cnveyr must be cnstructed in such a way as t nt allw access t danger znes r, by default, must be equipped with guards and prtective devices. Deterrent devices may als be used. Varius types f cnveyr belt prtectrs and deterrent devices, as well as safety requirements fr cnveyr sub-assemblies, are described belw. Uncntrlled cpy if printed. Valid n day f printing nly. Printed n: 29 September 2017
Next 8/17/2018 Issuing Dept: Safety Page: Page 9 f 14 Guards A guard is a machine element that makes the danger zne inaccessible by islating it. Guards n cnveyr belts are required t be designed with perating cnditins in mind. They shuld be capable f resisting the lads t which they will be subjected. These devices must nt create additinal hazards r tempt wrkers t bypass their use. The dimensins and weight f mvable guard cmpnents shuld t be designed t allw fr easy handling. T this end, it is preferable t have articulated r hinged guards. Guard remval and reinstallatin shuld be quick and easy. Ideally, guards shuld be self-lcking when clsed. Fixed guards: A fixed guard is a permanent part f the machine. It is nt dependent upn mving parts t perfrm its intended functin. It may be cnstructed f sheet metal, screen, wire clth, bars, plastic, r any ther material substantial enugh t withstand whatever impact it may receive, and t endure prlnged use. A fixed guard is usually preferable t all ther types because f its permanence and relative simplicity. Surrunding fixed guards: This is a fixed guard that either cmpletely r partially surrunds the danger zne. (Because f penings required fr belt and lad passage, surrunding fixed guards may nly partially surrund the danger zne. In cnveyr belts, fixed guards that nly partially surrund the danger zne take n tw principle shapes: partial cages, as illustrated in Figure 2-2 and used mainly fr head and return drums side screens, as illustrated in Figure 2-3 Guards must extend beynd the in-running nips between the belts and rllers s as t make them inaccessible frm abve, belw and frm the ends. T prevent access frm abve the guards, cages shuld be clsed at the tp. Side screens may take n a variety f shapes as shwn in Figures 2-3 and 2-4 (screens with a 90 degree r ther angle bend), t make in-running nips inaccessible frm abve the guard. 10 Next 8/17/2018 Issuing Dept: Safety Page: Page 10 f 14 Barrier guards (fixed distance): Barrier guards d nt cmpletely surrund danger znes but rather restrict r prevent access by their size and separatin frm the danger zne. An example is a surrunding enclsure (see Figure 2-6). Uncntrlled cpy if printed. Valid n day f printing nly. Printed n: 29 September 2017
Next 8/17/2018 Issuing Dept: Safety Page: Page 11 f 14 In-running nip fixed guards: fixed guard can be placed at a height f an in-running nip that will nt allw access t this zne. In-running nip fixed guards may be frm-fitting r made frm angled deflectrs with side plates. They are well suited t an individual lad cnveyance, as well as t rllers and drums with a smth, unbrken surface. They may be used in trughed cnveyr belts as lng as they have fllwed the belt prfile. Hwever, these guards are ill-suited t cleated type, ribbed r raised-edge belts. Interlcking guards: A guard equipped with an interlcking device shuld have the fllwing characteristics. It shuld: cause the machine r the peratin f its hazardus cmpnents t stp as it is slightly pened make it impssible t start the machine r t perate its hazardus cmpnents fr as lng as it is nt in place nt cause the machine r its hazardus cmpnents t restart nce it is fully restred t its place This type f guard may nly be used if the hazard disappears befre a wrker can access the danger zne (lw inertia cnveyr with rapid stp) (see Figure 2-10). 12 Next 8/17/2018 Issuing Dept: Safety Page: Page 12 f 14 Deterrent Devices These are devices (ther than guards) that reduce the risk f cntact with a danger zne. They are ften physical bstacles which, withut ttally preventing access t a danger zne, reduce the pssibility f access. Deterrent devices (see Figure 2-12) include: rller side plates guardrails with mid rails Deterrent devices must be designed with perating cnditins in mind. They must be capable f resisting the lads t which they will be subjected. These devices must nt create additinal hazards r tempt wrkers t bypass their use. EMERGENCY STOP DEVICES Uncntrlled cpy if printed. Valid n day f printing nly. Printed n: 29 September 2017
Next 8/17/2018 Issuing Dept: Safety Page: Page 13 f 14 There must be a device r methd accessible t the wrker(s) where equipment peratins can be interrupted safely, while als ensuring that equipment cannt be unexpectedly restarted. An all-stp switch is nt designed t put an end t a recurring dangerus situatin; this is the rle f an emergency stp device. A stp cmmand has pririty ver a start cmmand. The emergency stp device f a cnveyr t which wrkers have access cmprises several cntrl devices lcated at the lading and unlading areas, as well as alng the length f the cnveyr. These devices must be easily visible and clearly identified, and must activate n a single actin. This device can be a switch r crd running the length f the cnveyr. An emergency stp device must allw equipment t shut dwn in the safest pssible way. This can be achieved by slwing dwn mving parts at an ptimal rate, as fllws: by an immediate interruptin f pwer t the mtrs by a cntrlled stp (mtrs remain energized t bring the equipment dwn t a prgressive stp and pwer is interrupted nce the equipment has cme t halt) The resetting f an emergency stp device must nt by itself cause the start-up f the machine unless the cnveyr is a slw-mving type which wrkers can access safely. Start-up must be cnfirmed by a manual actin (manual resetting). The emergency stp cmmand has pririty ver all ther cmmands. Emergency stp devices must stp any upstream r dwnstream cnveyrs which may pse a safety risk t wrkers. The emergency stp device must nt be used t bring the cnveyr t an all-stp state. The emergency stp must nt be used as a regular stp. Remember that an emergency stp device des nt replace apprpriate prtectin devices. As well, emergency stp devices must nt replace equipment lckut prcedures during maintenance requiring access t danger znes. LOCKOUT/TAGOUT Lckut/islatin prcedures r cntrls are an integral part f verall maintenance and perating prcedures. Prcedures fr cntrlling hazardus energy are as fllws: the equipment must be brught t a cmplete stp all surces f energy (electric, pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, thermal, chemical, radiatin and gravity) must be discnnected all accumulated energy must be remved (by purging reservirs, remving cunter weights, unlading springs, etc.) persnal lck(s) must be applied t each energy-islating device the equipment must be tested t verify that it will nt perate r mve OTHER REQUIREMENTS Fllw the psted lckut tagut prcedure that is attached the machine!
