1 INVITE YOUR FRIENDS! Revolution Student Ministry Long's Chapel United Methodist Church Information Packet (ONE PACKET PER PERSON) Welcome to the 2013 Winter Retreat. This packet contains all the necessary ingredients that will ensure you have the most up-to-date information that will make this trip one of the most memorable experiences of your life! Please read over everything carefully. You will keep some of the forms in this packet for yourself, but please promptly return all forms needing a signature and be aware of all timelines and due dates. We will be travel i ng to Snowshoe Mountain Resort in Snowshoe West Virginia on February 22 ND - 25 th This trip will include incredible opportunities for the skier, snowboarder, snow tuber, and snow lover alike with over 50 slopes to choose from and skill testing levels ranging from slope to diamonds. The resort also offers a myriad of shops and restaurants as well as the opportunity to soak in the indoor/ outdoor heated pool and hot tub. There is an indoor arcade located in Mountain Lodge for those who wish to challenge themselves inside rather than out. There will be an evening worship program scheduled to rejuvenate and challenge our spirits. Everyone will receive a schedule upon arriving at Snowshoe. Please arrive at the church by 12pm promptly on Friday the 22nd. You will need to have your lunch in hand! We will return Monday the 25 th around 5pm. This trip is only offered to our 9 th -12 th grade students and those who are our young adults. PLEASE NOTE THAT STUDENTS WILL MISS A DAY OF SCHOOL, MONDAY FEBRUARY 25 th. Students will also need to be checked out early Friday afternoon, but should not be charged as missing a full day of school. I don't encourage students missing ANY school, but this is done in part to keep the cost as low as I can make it. Please make sure you have whatever permission you will need to miss Monday. Again, this is so we can continue to have this retreat at Snowshoe while not busting everyone's wallet.
2 Please plan on paying for one meal up and one meal on the way back. All meals are provided at Snowshoe, but youth will probably want to buy snacks and food in the Village as well as gifts or "stuff". The Ski Barn is offering us a storewide 10% discount for those needing gloves, hats, face masks, goggles, shirts, etc. Please note, if you are going to be snow tubing you need to have your own money for this. It will not be prepaid. You will pay for this at the slopes. Snow tubing lasts 2 hours per session and is a TON of fun when you have a lot of folks go with you. Going down the slope as a chain of snow tubers is crazy fun! We are staying at The Mountain Lodge at Snowshoe, which offers us slope side snowboarding and skiing. We will have access to the Western Territory and Silver Creek (accessed by shuttle) for even more adventure. Please understand that skiing and snowboarding can be dangerous. Just in my past experience with taking youth on this trip, I have had youth suffer concussions, broken limbs, busted lips the size of and severe bruises. Please be aware of the risks involved. If you have any doubt or questions about your level of ability and what you should do, please ask Shawn or someone who has a lot of experience with snowboarding/skiing. Also, lessons are strongly encouraged for those who are still beginning and are MANDATORY IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME ON SKIS OR SNOWBOARD. Your friends will tell you that they will help you and stay with you until you figure it out. They are lying!! Sorry, but this is my policy. Finally, I would like to inform everyone that the Alpine Village consists of many stores, restaurants, and bars, and I do not want any of our adults, young adults, and especially our youth to be drinking any alcoholic beverages while on this trip. Thank you for respecting this and not bringing or using drugs, tobacco products, and weapons! Cell phones DO NOT WORK up at Snowshoe. Should you need to contact Shawn for an emergency, call my cell at but this will not work once we are at Snowshoe. Also call The Group Sales Office at or and ask for the Mountain Lodge front desk. They will be able to direct you where our group will be staying. The rooms we will be staying in all have phones. Kids are encouraged to call home using a prepaid phone card or by calling Collect to check in with parents. Parents, if you want your child to check in with you to verify they have made it safely, then please indicate that to me. My policy is to only connect with parents if there is a problem. I would rather kids not be calling home every day if possible.
3 REVOLUTION STUDENT MINISTRY Long's Chapel United Methodist Church CODE OF CONDUCT This trip is going to be a ton of fun and will be full of incredible memories and stories. However, this can only happen if everyone agrees to a few regulations. Simply put, if you read over the following and do not agree with any of them then please do not go. Should you decide to come and break the following agreement, then you will be sent packing back home courtesy of your parents coming and getting you at their expense or paying for your own Greyhound ticket. Parents please note that you must sign and agree to this form as w ell as y our youth. Young adults j ust need to sign themselves away. I agree to the following: 1. I will respect and obey all leaders on this trip at all times. 2. I will show respect to everyone going on this trip. I'll leave the drama at home. 3. I understand I will be representing Long s Chapel UMC by my actions and behaviors and choose to act accordingly with others who I will encounter on this trip will not go into the opposite sex's room at any time for any reason unless approved by Shawn or one of the adult leaders. 5. I will not lick the side of the chair lift to see if my tongue gets stuck like in the movie Dumb and Dumber. 6. I understand that Long's Chapel is not responsible for lost or damaged items that may pertain to me. I will take responsibility for my own stuff and money. (includes rentals) 7. I understand that if I damage any property or lose any rented equipment that I will be responsible to pay for all charges. 8. I understand that this trip is not meant for me to try to pick up the cutest guy/girl on the slopes but that making snow angels with someone is religiously O.K. 9. If I am bringing a boyfriend/girlfriend on this trip, I will limit my PDA to holding hands only, realizing that sitting in each other's laps and swapping saliva isn't what we want to see. 10. I will agree to the buddy system and will be found with a friend at all times, whether on the slopes or in the village area. DO NOT BE FOUND ALONE. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR BUDDY. 11. I will try to avoid being hit with a snow ball from Shawn while he careens by me with his artistic kung fu snowboarding style, realizing that I may be no match for his cunning abilities on the slopes. 12. I will not bring any or use any tobacco, alcoholic, or illegal drug products while on this trip. 13. I will not reveal any of the 5 B s : Bra, Boxers, Butt, Body, or Bad language. Print name of youth or young adult Sign name of youth or young adult I/We the parents agree to retrieve our youth should there be a problem with his or her behavior. You can reach me immediately at (Young adults do not need parents signature) Return, this form. Fill one out for each member of a family going.
