2 FAITH MATTERS Passionate and the Passion The word passionate can mean many things to many people. To some it means involvement in a relationship. To others it may be someone who is totally devoted to a cause or a sport. I know some people here in the park who are passionate about pickleball. They are on the court at every opportunity, they watch others play when they can t, and their conversation is almost always turned to pickleball. Perhaps the best example of a passionate person was the late songwriter Irving Berlin. He wrote many of the time-tested popular songs, and he was totally involved with his songwriting. His friends had a standing wager. They had something similar to the office pool where everyone would chip in and place bets on football games or some other thing. The bet was Guess how soon it will be before Irving starts talking about his new project? The bets were in 30-second increments ranging from two minutes up to about 10 minutes. The usual winners ranged right around five minutes, because Irving Berlin was so passionate about songwriting, he was eager to tell everybody about it. Suppose that you know a person who was totally passionate about love. Not just any kind of love, but a love that was so deep and so powerful that everything he did, everything he said, the way he lived, and the way he died, was aimed at spreading that love. You do know such a person, and his message is about the love of God. Remember John 3:16: God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believed in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Now, that is passion. This year, Christians all around the world will celebrate Easter on April 20. It is a celebration of life and of love so deep and wide that not even death could contain it. It is interesting to note that the story of Jesus s trial and crucifixion is known as the Passion of Christ. I, for one, am glad that God loves me enough to give His own son for the love of the world, because that includes me. By the way, Easter love includes you, too, if you let it. Grace and Peace, Ray W. 11 HEALTH FEATURE by Jack Zwicky LET YOURSELF BE HEARD Think about it. When you are talking to a person with a hearing problem, you both have a communication problem. By definition, communication involves providing and receiving information. Unfortunately, receiving breaks down all too often among Voyager residents whose hearing has mysteriously slipped away. Quite sadly, approximately 40% of all people age 65 and over suffer a hearing loss. This percentage increases substantially with age. Not all persons experiencing hearing difficulty are willing to acknowledge it. Seeing an audiologist is highly encouraged. You will not be sorry you gave in. Put yourself in the shoes of a hard-of-hearing listener. Maybe his word recognition is only at a 50% level. More than likely he has high frequency hearing loss which severely affects the ability to hear higher pitched voices. Talkers can assist the hard-of-hearing listeners. There are various ways to reduce the communication problem as well as the inter-personal challenges and frustrations of both parties that go along with hearing loss. Today s hearing aids offer dramatic improvement. However, hearing aids are not a panacea. Hearing aids do not return normal hearing. Just because your listener is wearing aids, don t think his hearing is normal. Things you can do to help the listener: Because lip reading is fairly common, all the following should be practiced: Keep your hands and microphone away from your lips. Face the listener directly and be at the same level sit or stand as necessary. Speak clearly but don t exaggerate pronunciation. Be in a well lit area avoid shadows. Use facial expressions and hand gestures to give useful clues show size, point in a direction, etc. Get the listener s attention. Tell him what you are going to be talking about before starting and very importantly, let him know if the subject is changing. Speak in a normal voice without shouting. Talking somewhat slower will give the listener s brain slightly more time to process your message. No-brainers include never talking from another room, not speaking as you walk away and not letting your voice drop at the end of a sentence. The very hardest thing for a listener to overcome is background noise. Turn the music off. Move to a quieter area if possible. Don t even attempt to convey important information in a noisy setting. You may have to re-phrase your sentence. If repeating one time doesn t help, it is better to use different words to express the same idea. Confirm the important stuff. When a message is particularly important or you suspect confusion, asking a question to clarify what message was received is okay. However, be careful not to overdo questions. They are important when dates, schedules and directions are involved. Any and all financial matters should be in writing. Talkers can show concern and consideration in many ways: When in a group, be sure to include the hearing impaired person when talking. This helps keep him from feeling excluded. When asking questions at a presentation, stand up so your voice projects well and make a determined effort to be heard. Presenters should turn the microphone over to those asking questions or at least repeat the question. Be careful not to create unnecessary loud noises. Many hearing impaired persons hear loud sounds (pans banging, loud music or a grandchild screaming) at a level much louder than a person with normal hearing. Go figure! Listeners have to assume a major share of the responsibility for better hearing. There are many techniques which can be used, perhaps the subject of a follow-up article. Just a few of the many techniques that could be covered include: Arrive early to get the best seat possible. Don t accept a seat at a restaurant unless all or most of the background noise will be at your back. A booth with high backs is always better than a table in the middle of the room. Do your own map quest rather than ask directions. Take a lip (speech) reading class. When attending a lecture or play, read up on the subject and/or the speaker before hand. If any or all of the above makes sense, say yes, yes, yes---- You have joined the Hearing Team. NOTE: Voyager management is moving ahead to provide equipment beneficial to those with hearing aids, i.e., the Loop System. Hopefully, management will continue to be responsive to the hearing needs of all residents by providing better sound equipment and hearing environments. Voyager Compass 11 April 2014

14 NOTICES Google Group To join the Voyager Community Post: Send an to Bookmobile Thursday, April 3rd at 9:15 a.m. Ballroom South Parking Lot COMMUNITY FOOD BANK Community Food Bank needs become even higher as the summer approaches. 1 in 5 Arizonans do not know where their next meal is coming from. If you are leaving, please remember the CFB boxes in the Ballroom. If you stay all year, please remember the needs of the CFB as you shop. Thank you in advance! Questions? Call Sue Pierce at ZERO WASTE: A CONCEPT WHO S TIME HAS COME BY ROSE BECK Zero waste embraces the reuse component in the waste hierarchy of refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot. At this time in history, zero waste is poorly supported by government laws leaving reuse marginalized. This is where you and I come in. By changing our thinking from recycling as an end-result to Zero Waste as a design principle that can be applied to any product or process, in any situation, or at any level. It applies equally to toxic chemicals as to benign plant matter. It can even be applied to the waste of human potential by enforced poverty and the denial of educational opportunity. It encompasses redesign for reduced energy wasting in industry or transportation, as well as designing the efficient use of all resources. Yes, right now our government and our communities are focused on solid waste management and supports the garbage industry and the recycling industry because they ARE industries and people need jobs. Zero Waste is a visionary concept and unless we individually envision it, promote it, suggest it to others in conversation, learn more about it, speak to our politicians, knock on the doors of industry and incorporate it into our individual lifestyle, it will not happen or may take longer than our planet can tolerate. Most of us have lives full of stuff that could be passed on to others for their use. Doing without all this stuff and letting go of the idea that new is better is something we can all embrace as a first step toward zero waste. Let s all chew on this idea, digest the concept and discover what our lives would look like if we incorporated it into our lives. Online web services, like FreeCycle or the regives Network have risen in popularity over the last decade where locals can give items that they no longer need to others locally in an effort to keep items out of landfills and work toward a zero waste lifestyle. 16 ACTIVITY UPDATES NIMBLE FINGERS This year our Underwear and Sock Drive for the children in Foster Care through AVIVA was a big success. Thanks to all of you who contributed either dollars or new packages of underwear and socks, we collected 226 packages many with 8 or 10 pairs per package! AVIVA was delighted with our donation as their cupboards were almost bare and their city-wide drive doesn t begin until April. So our drive was very timely. We will continue having our drive each February. So, as you travel this summer, Remember the Children and pick up items on sale to contribute for our next drive! Our current sewing projects include making cute animal face pillows for EMTs to distribute to children in stressful circumstances; and also cloth duffle bags for children to stow their belongings when taken into Foster Care (so they don t have to have their things put into a black plastic garbage bag). Our needlework groups are focusing on baby size afghans and adult lap robes. As always, our charities are in need of all types of items and so whatever our members wish to make, we will find someone that needs it. Over the summer, all of us continue to work on fall and winter projects including several types of items for the Salvation Army s fall toy drive. Voyager really shows its heart in the support it gives to so many worthy charitable organizations. We thank all of you who donated fabric and yarn this year. We have put it to good use. We are also grateful for the dollars donated that help us purchase needed supplies. We could not do it without you! We meet all summer. Drop by and get involved with the work we do or just bring your own project to work on and visit. All are welcome to join us. We meet in the Palo Verde Room every Monday and Friday between 1:00 and 3:30 p.m. Contact Joyce Spears at with any questions. DOWN-THE-RABBIT-HOLE FILMS Meeting in the Santa Rita Room from 1:00-3:30 p.m. on Saturdays, April 12th and 26th. The term down the rabbit hole is used to define an altered view of reality. A new paradigm that goes beyond everything we thought we knew about ourselves, our planet, and our universe. The film series will take us on a journey to a different perception of the human body, through a new way of viewing our living planet, to the wonderland of our universe. The April 12th film is Planet Ocean. This film serves as a reminder of the bond between humans and nature, and the duty that exists to respect and protect our home. The film captures extraordinary images of our remarkable oceans, the source of all life on our planet. The Celestine Prophesy, will be shown on April 26th. How far down the rabbit hole do you want to go? As some films are shorter than the allotted time, we encourage discussion afterwards. CONTINUOUS CHEST COMPRESSION CLASSES Monday, March 17th marked the last in a series of free, one hour Continuous Chest Compression workshops taught in the Catalina Room by specially trained University of Arizona medical students. Over 70 people attended the last event, and a total of 237 people have received training here this year. We plan to offer the classes again in January March Voyager Compass 16 April 2014
