I am really excited about the 30 th Voyager Anniversary Party and Celebration on November 5 th. I hope you all will attend and say hello to our special guests. Debby and her staff always throw a good shindig!!! As we enter the Holiday Season, which is also the kickoff to Voyager Season, I would ask you to make a New Year s resolution this year to BE SAFE and pay close attention to how you are driving in the Resort. Please adhere to the 15 mph speed limit, please stop at ALL Stop signs, and please be aware of your surroundings. This applies whether you are operating a car, a motorcycle, a golf cart or a bicycle. Let s be considerate of our fellow residents - take the extra moment to arrive safely and insure those around us do as well. Hopefully you have had a chance to get out and see all the improvements we made this summer. Of all the work we did, I m most excited about the courtyard. I think we are really going to make it pop! I hope it will become a gathering place for residents to unwind and visit, or just hang out with the laptop on the free wi-fi that is now provided in the area. The new pickleball courts are complete and have seen plenty of play since day one. The resurfaced courts look nice as well, and you might not recognize the resurfaced volleyball court. The new bocce ball courts are nearing completion. We are just waiting for the new turf to come in and they will be ready for daily play. I want to thank James Dean for his input during the course of the design and installation of the courts. The last remaining project is installation of the LOOP system in the Ballroom, Santa Rita Room and Catalina Rooms. I hope to start this as soon as some of our LOOP volunteers return. Finally, as it is the beginning of the Holiday Season, I d like to wish each of you and your families a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving!!!! Rick Tubaugh General Manager November Events Calendar 28

15 FAITH MATTERS Anyone here a fan of the TV series BONES? It is based on the work of a forensic anthropologist and woman crime fighter who is brilliant at solving crimes based on skeletal remains. I know, I know. The content of the show is sometimes pretty grisly, and you surely wouldn't want to tape the show for replaying during dinner. For me, however, one of the interesting questions of life is raised in, of all places, the running of the credits. It shows a drawing of a little boy pointing to a tree in the distance. and asking a question: "What's that mean?" Ah, yes. That's a question that faces us every day. Sometimes we miss it altogether because we are so busy with the everyday, and sometimes that question seems grandiose and pretentious. I am here to tell you that when you take the time to look around, the meaning of life can come rushing at you in a hundred different ways. The difference seems to me to be found in life in Christ. Brother Lawrence of long ago found it possible to worship God in the kitchen among the pots and pans. Saint Francis of Assisi found God's presence so palpable that he saw God's family in nature. He called on Brother Sun and Sister Moon. The meaning of God in the everyday is with us today, too. A contemporary Christian by the name of Michael W. Smith has a song with this for a refrain: Everywhere I look I see You. Every Where I look I see you." Part of what we do in chapel is to celebrate the love of God for everyone. What's that mean? There's joy to be discovered, and we'd love to have you be part of the adventure. See you in Chapel? Ray W. Burgess, Chaplain SUNDAY CHAPEL SERVICES 9:40 AM in the Ballroom starting November 2nd Beginning with a Hymn Sing Interdenominational Chapel Services Everyone is welcome! Chaplain Ray Burgess Voyager Community Chapel has been in existence since the early days of Voyager. Ike and Blanche Isaacson felt it was important for Voyager residents to have a place to worship as well as a place to play. Voyager Chapel has grown since those early days, and has always been directed by a Chapel Committee of volunteers. Chapel meets in the Ballroom every Sunday from November through Easter with as many as 500 worshippers in attendance. Services begin at 9:40 a.m. when we enjoy an old fashioned hymn sing. Interdenominational worship, led by Chaplain Ray Burgess, is enhanced by excellent instrumental and vocal music, including a large choir. Communion is served the first Sunday of each month to all worshippers. Chapel s ongoing operating expenses are met through freewill offerings. One offering each month goes entirely to one of five local charities: Tucson Metropolitan Ministries; the Salvation Army; Primavera Foundation; the Community Food Bank; and the Gospel Rescue Mission. This is one way Voyager residents give generous support to the Tucson community. All Voyager residents, regardless of religious background or affiliation, are invited to worship. 17 NOTICES Once again Larry s Shoe Help support Angels will be collecting new children s shoes for the families served by Gospel Rescue Mission, a local nonprofit founded in 1953 that provides spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental support to the area s homeless, poor and needy. The Mission provides meals, clothing, shelter, and a Gospel message 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our goal is to collect 1000 pairs of shoes (to fit elementary school age children) and to distribute them to the children at the Mission s Christmas Banquet. So far we have collected 200 pair and are confident we will reach our goal. Thanks to the generosity of Voyager residents, the over 700 pair of new shoes we gave away last year are currently being worn by Tucson s neediest children. This year s collection box is a bright yellow school bus located in the Ballroom. Thank you for helping us with this endeavor. Larry Kowalik, COMMUNITY CARES READY TO ROLL!! Last spring we promoted a program opportunity to organize and care for our Voyager neighbors and friends living alone or suffering an illness. Support spilled from Voyager management, Voyager Chapel, the Cove Board of Directors, our Journey s Health Clinic, Neighbor to Neighbor leaders, and YOU. Well... it s time to take action. We have over 70 volunteers (residents and seasonals alike) signed up to implement this program. These volunteers are asked to attend a training meeting: Thursday, November 6 th in the Santa Rita Room at 10:00 A.M. Others interested in helping can attend the training. An overview of the program will be presented at Coffee on November 8 th. We will soon be prepared to accept participants requesting a daily checkup. Yes, the Community Cares program at Voyager is ready to roll!! The HEAT Optimist Club of Rita Ranch invites you to a Meet and Greet, Wednesday, November 12 th from 6:30-7:30 PM in the Santa Rita Room. Plans are underway for this year s Salvation Army Toy Drive to be held December 18th, 19th, 22nd and 23rd, with a weekend break between the distribution dates. We hope this will allow more Voyager residents the opportunity to volunteer. Our building is located at 320 S. Wilmot (the building on the left side of the Park Place Mall entrance on Wilmot) - the same location as the last two years. Volunteer sign up is FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5th in the SANTA RITA ROOM from 3 to 5 PM. If you are new to the Toy Drive, please come by so committee members can explain how the Toy Drive works and the type of help we need. If you d like to help but cannot attend the sign-up, please call Mary Lou Wilton at # Toy Drive information will also be available at Saturday Coffees beginning November 8th. 20 ACTIVITY UPDATES ARTS & CRAFTS BUSY HANDS (formerly the Hobby Group) You are invited to stop by the Palo Verde Room any Tuesday or Friday from 9 AM - Noon to help with our many charitable projects as you enjoy the fellowship of our group. One of our newer projects is to make and fill ditty bags for homeless youth. Donations of travel size personal hygiene items, including toothpaste, shampoo, shaving crème, lotions, disposable razors, soap or body wash, mouthwash, etc. are welcome. We would also love to have you come help fill these bags. We also make pillows for dogs at the Humane Society. Most of the dogs take these pillows to their forever homes, giving them something familiar in their new surroundings. Members crochet and knit lap blankets, baby sets, hats, scarves, and dishcloths that are given to several Tucson charities or are sold at our Market Daze table with proceeds funding the purchase of more supplies. Donations of yarn, fabrics, quilt batting, fabric and yarn scraps and plastic grocery bags are always welcome, along with cash donations to purchase supplies. To those of you who have so kindly donated, a big THANK YOU! NIMBLE FINGERS Nimble Fingers met all summer and we have almost filled our cabinets with finished items. Many members make items while away to donate when they return. We will be distributing all the hand made items to about a dozen charities very soon. We donate 2,000 to 3,000 hand -made items each year to charity. Donations of fabric, yarn, or dollars to help buy supplies are always needed. We especially need your leftover yarn to make afghans for the VA and other organizations that request them. Each February we collect underwear and socks for foster children. Purchase items when you find a bargain; we will save them to distribute in February. We meet each Monday and Friday from 1:00 to 3:30 PM in the Palo Verde Room. You are invited to drop by and get involved with our sewing, knitting, crocheting and various needlework projects. Our experts can help you with needlework problems, or just bring your own project and visit while you work. ARTS & CRAFTS QUILTERS I As our new season starts, Quilters I is looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. At Market Daze on November 12th we will be selling table runners, quilts, and wall hangings for fall, Christmas, new babies, and grandchildren. Drop by our table to donate your skills, material or money for our primary project of making Quilts for the Ronald McDonald House of Tucson. Our goal is to have each child at the house receive a handmade quilt to keep. Our Quilters I Quilt Show and Sale has a new day and location - this year in the Voyager Ballroom on Monday, January 19th. As always, admission is free, so invite your friends. We will have some great items for sale. All proceeds will benefit the Ronald McDonald House.
