UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA CANCER CENTER SKIN CANCER PREVENTION RESEARCH STUDY The purpose of this research is to analyze changes that occur in skin cells when an emollient cream (moisturizer) is applied to sun damaged skin and actinic keratosis twice a day for a period of 3 months. Actinic keratoses (also called AK or pre-cancers) are small, rough scaly spots that do not go away; physicians often freeze these areas with liquid nitrogen. It takes 4-5 months to complete the study, with 4 or 5 study visits. The test areas are either the forearms or the scalp. Participants are randomized into one of two groups; one group applies only the emollient cream provided to them to the test area, and the other group applies no skin product whatsoever to the test area. A total of 5 small skin samples (biopsies) are collected from the test area: 2 at the beginning of the study and 3 at the end. Photos are taken and medical history is reviewed. The study is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and conducted by the University of Arizona Cancer Center. An Institutional Review Board responsible for human subjects research at The University of Arizona reviewed this research project and found it to be acceptable, according to applicable state and federal regulations and University policies designed to protect the rights and welfare of participants in research. Compensation will be provided to qualified study participants. For more information please call the Study Coordinator at VOYAGER COMPASS 17 DECEMBER 2016

19 FAITH, GIVING, AND THANKS SUNDAY CHAPEL SERVICES 9:40 AM in the Ballroom, beginning with a Hymn Sing Interdenominational Everyone is welcome! Chaplain Ray Burgess CHRISTMAS EVE CANDLELIGHT SERVICE Saturday, December 24 7:00 PM in the Ballroom Ray Burgess, Chaplain Interdenominational All are welcome. The Chaplain s Corner The month of December is taken up with the season of Advent and then Christmas. The holiday shopping season began a long time ago and the decorations are put up in many homes and stores. What does this mean - really mean - to us? To the merchants in the stores, it means selling. Some retailers hope for a sizable portion of their annual profit to be made in the month of December. Having worked in a retail men's wear store, I understand that. Families have certain traditions they follow every year, and I understand that too. I look forward to making a traditional torte again this year. However, there is a deeper reality that comes to us in this season. It is the birth of Jesus. Biblical accounts add to his name these words; Jesus, which is called Immanuel, "God With Us." We need to remember the meaning of Immanuel. Astonishing as it may seem, the birth in Bethlehem is really the presence of God with us. I need to remember that this little baby is the son of God. He came to us when we needed Him most, to be with us in our joys and our sorrows, in our laughter and our pain. He came to us in our humanity, not our perfection. So use this month to prepare for the coming of God to be with us. Be open to that marvelous mystery. Open your hearts to the joy and love this season brings. God rest ye merry, gentlemen (ladies, too). This season brings the best news of all. Ray W. Burgess, Chaplain Condolences to the families and friends of: Bill Beaufait Carol Brown Ray Miller Kathy Yeakle Grief Support Group Grief is a journey - each journey is different. In this group, we give ourselves and others permission to grieve at our own pace, with grace, acceptance, compassion, and kindness. Voyager s Grief Support Group meets Sundays, December 4 & 18 from 2-4 pm in the Cactus Room. All are welcome. NEIGHBOR TO NEIGHBOR Sandy Farone (B) # Jane Kenworthy (V) # Jean Cary (C) # If you are or know of someone in need, give us a call! 22 VOYAGER AUTHORS PAGE A U.P. DELICACY - THE PASTY BY GEORGE AUNE In Michigan's upper peninsula, copper and iron mining were main industries in the mid and late 1800s. Deep shafts were sunk into the rocky soil and the miners rode down into their depths to work ten hour shifts drilling and extracting the ore. The mines attracted many immigrants and among them were families from Cornwall in southwestern England. (The Cornish people were sometimes nicknamed cousin jacks or jennies.) When the tin mines in their native country started going bad, they came to the U.S. to seek their fortunes in the newly developed mines in the U.P. The Cornish miners brought with them mining knowledge which other ethnic groups did not have. And they brought also the pasty as their standard lunch. It was small, portable, and very filling and could stay warm for eight to ten hours. So what is a pasty (paaasty)? It is a pot pie without the pot and must contain two ingredients (among others): potatoes and onions. Other ingredients include rutabagas, carrots, and seasonings including salt and pepper. A pasty is a complete meal. Dough containing flour, lard, and water is mixed and rolled out. The fillings vary but include diced meat (flank steak or venison) and vegetables. Authentic Cornish pasties do not contain carrots. Onions and potatoes are a necessity, and with seasonings sprinkled over them, the innards are moved to one side of the dough and the other half is folded over the mix. Edges are crimped and the pie, shaped like a "D", is placed in an oven until the crust is a golden brown. The consistency of the dough must be such that it will not crack while baking or cooling later on. Other ethnic groups began emulating the Cornish families and the miners began including the pasty for their lunch. They would wrap the pasty in a small towel and place it under their shirt next to their skin to keep it warm. If at lunch time the pasty had gotten lukewarm or cold, they would place it on a shovel and hold it over a heat-lamp candle. Miners never ate a pasty with a fork; they ate it end to end and held it upright to keep in the juices. To douse the pasty with ketchup is a sin in some households. To add apple sauce or a tossed salad as a side dish is acceptable. Making several dozen pasties is a day's work...however, they can be frozen and then heated and served as a quick lunch. So let's have a Pasty Party. We might also want to attend the annual Pasty Fest in the summer in Calumet, Michigan or another such gathering in the Iron Range in Northern Minnesota or in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. Or let's have a Pasty Party here at Voyager...who has a large oven? George Aune was born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in a mining town called Norway. He and Shirley have been coming to Voyager since 2003 and call Santa Fe their summer home. Marion Rathwell, our 4th St poet who calls Ontario home, brings us two Etherees, each consisting of ten lines of unmetered and unrhymed verse, the first line having one syllable, and each succeeding line adding a syllable. The first describes what many of us are missing; the second what we re enjoying here in Tucson in December. WINTER TRAVEL Cold And chill The wind blows It's icy path Across the highway Whipping the falling snow Into white walls of uncertainty Tires crunching on the ice slicked roads We follow in lines of red tail lights Our travelling plans at the mercy of the storm. NATURE S DANCE The Tiny Hummingbirds Hover and flit Around the feeder Sipping the sweet nectar They dance a stately quadrille Like noble ladies of the court Dressed in their iridescent ball gowns With whirring wings they fly into the sun. The Voyager Authors Page features poems and stories written by members of the Voyager Writers Workshop. Voyager Compass 22 December 2016
