1 Volume 22 Issue 1 October 2016 COMPASS SET YOUR COURSE FOR VOYAGER RESORT Hope You re Hungry! TATER TIME Wednesday October 19 MARY S SPAGHETTI DINNER Wednesday October 26 W elcome Home to our returning residents and RVers, and a big hello to all our first time visitors. I again look forward to an exciting and active season, with lots of entertainment and a couple of Manager s rides thrown in. We were quite busy this summer making even more aesthetic and infrastructural improvements. We completed Phase 2 of the Concentric Neutral Primary Electric line replacement. All the primary electrical lines for the transformers are being replaced over a 4 year period to give us more reliable power. We re-plastered the large pool and the Bay pool with Pebble Tech sheen, a darker finish that lasts over twice as long as plaster. Journeys Health Clinic has moved to the Villa on 9 th street to give Mary Beth more room and a better set up. The Woodshop will be expanded into TABLE OF CONTENTS the former clinic space this fall. The tennis courts by the Golf Course were resurfaced as post tension concrete courts (exactly like the tennis courts by the Restaurant), eliminating Voyager Information 2 safety hazards that existed with the asphalt courts. One of the existing tennis courts by the pickleball courts will become a multi use court for both tennis and pickleball. Coming Events 3 The issue of safety is primary as more people return to Voyager. It definitely takes Voyager News 6 a Village and we all need to watch out for each other. The speed limit in the resort is 15 mph for ALL vehicles, and a stop sign means STOP, again for ALL vehicles. Dogs must Health and Wellness 7 be kept on short leashes. This summer, a dog on a retractable leash charged a bicyclist On-Site Services 8 and almost caused a wreck. Our residents and guests are here to enjoy an active lifestyle, and one fall could cause severe damage to hips, knees, shoulders or worse. Notices 10 Being active with that kind of injury would be almost impossible.so please, when Faith, Giving & Thanks 12 driving, walking dogs or riding bicycles, think of others so that EVERYONE can enjoy the time they spend here. Activity Updates 14 I sincerely hope that you have a great season at Voyager, whether you ve been here Activity Schedule 16 for years or it s your first ever Concert Series 19 Rick Tubaugh, General Manager Advertiser Index 19 October Event Calendar 20

13 FAITH, GIVING, AND THANKS 2016 SALVATION ARMY TOY DRIVE Monday, December 19 Tuesday, December 20 Wednesday, December 21 Thursday, December 22 Mark these dates. We need volunteers! Watch for times and location details in the Compass, on the Voyager website and at. Thank you all for your past support. I am looking forward to sharing this wonderful experience with all of you again this year. See you soon. Mary Lou Wilton, Toy Drive Coordinator The Activity Office lost a co-worker, friend, mentor and resident this summer. Jim Wheeler passed away Monday, August 8. Despite some serious health issues over the last few years, Jim was still very active in managing the Voyager Activity Kitchen. He was also active in Coyote Chorus and the Cove HOA Board of Directors. Jim often couldn't be on his feet but that never stopped him or slowed him down from always trying to come up with a new menu item for Market Daze or organizing successful Dinner Shows. He was often seen driving his scooter to and from his kitchen duties; he always had a smile on his face and never let health issues stop him. He was the most positive person I have ever met and an inspiration to us all. I feel very blessed to have known Jim. At Jim s side in the kitchen were the most wonderful, caring, hard working and giving people, the Activity Kitchen Volunteers. Jim often told me that his job was to make sure they all had the tools and supplies to do their jobs and that they are the heart and soul of that kitchen. I couldn t agree more! Also beside Jim was his wife Lynnea. I am thrilled to announce that Lynnea has agreed to take over the Activity Kitchen this season. Please welcome Lynnea and give her your support. Join us for Jim s "Celebration of Life" on November 19. Watch for details. Debby COMMUNITY FOOD BANK As we begin another season in our retirement experience, Tucson area children are back in school. Those who struggle with hunger are more likely to suffer from a lack of physical, mental and social development. Please help - we need non-perishable food in non-glass containers. You can drop off your donations in the Catalina or Santa Rita Room through October 16th - after that collection boxes will be in the Ballroom. The Voyager Scores!! On September 17th Team Voyager had 41 members and 36 walkers in the Hunger Walk to benefit the Community Food Bank. We had 7038 in donations and 735 in registration fees for a total of 7773!! Thanks to all who walked and donated. When all is settled we most likely were the top group! Way to go VOYAGER!!! Community Cares Are you living alone, ill, injured, or fragile and would appreciate a FREE daily check for health and safety? The Community Cares Program can help. Display the correct day-of the week card in your window before 10 each morning. Volunteers will check cards each day. If correct, they will continue on their way. If not, get a knock on your door, a phone call, or other communication to confirm your health or safety is not in danger. Sign up as a participant or as a Community Cares volunteer by calling Lynne Jensen #6179 or Judy Williamson # In Tucson there is a desperate Help support need for new shoes for the less fortunate. Here at Voyager, we can help meet this need and make a difference in many lives. Our goal is to collect 1,000 pairs of NEW shoes to distribute at the Mission s Christmas Kid s Party and to the neediest of families through the local schools. Open your hearts to Tucson s needy and help us meet our goal by stuffing the BUS located in the Ballroom. This small act of kindness will benefit your SOUL. We also need volunteers to be shoe angels - if you can help, call Larry Kowalik at # Please support this great cause and make it the BEST year yet. Thank you in advance for helping us with this endeavor. VOYAGER COMPASS 13 OCTOBER 2016

14 ARTS & CRAFTS NIMBLE FINGERS Our final tally for hand made items donated to various charities during the 2015/2016 season was 3,105 - a very successful year! Thanks to everyone who donated yarn, fabric, and dollars. You make it all possible! We had a busy summer. In addition to the items we regularly make, we were able to fill some special requests. TTM Child and Family Services (which helps foster children and single mothers) requested 10 Halloween costumes for a Halloween party. We had fun making princess, pirate, scarecrow, and ghost costumes, and a few capes. Some of us bought hats, a tiara, and other accessories as our contribution. TMC requested animal face pillows for children being transported by ambulance. Some of us did the cutting, some drew the cute animal faces, a few sewed, and finally the 50 pillows were stuffed. We also made lots of afghans, scarfs, hats, walker bags, duffel bags, and pajamas, as usual. Our cupboards are almost full, so we'll be making our first distribution of the 2016/2017 season in October. If you know of anyone planning to clean out their yarn or fabric stash, we can put these items to good use. We especially need fabrics suitable for making walker, tote, and duffel bags. Bring your donations to the Palo Verde Room any Monday or Friday from 1:00 and 3:30 pm. If you sew, knit or crochet, we can use your talents for many items needed by local charities. Stop by and find out how you can get involved. Questions: Joyce Spears #5491. STAINED GLASS The Stained Glass Shop will be open Monday and Tuesday 9 am -12 noon for the month of October.
