5 VOYAGER NEWS A NOTE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Another season is just about behind us, and it flew by this year. I hope you all had a great time. As you head back to family and friends, we ll be here working on the various projects planned for the summer. We have approval for the final phase of the electrical project, replacing the Concentric Neutral Primary Electric lines throughout the resort. We will be repairing and resealing the streets where trenching is done for the electrical work. We will also be renovating the 2 nd floor of the hotel and replacing the bedding in all rooms. We re converting the Catalina Room floor to a wooden floor and renovating the Annex Shower rooms. Quite a bit of work is being done on the replacement of the phone switch. The only obstacle now is what to replace resident phone lines with, since we re not going to dig up all the wire under the streets, sidewalks and homes, to replace the existing wire. If we find the right solution, and can start the project, I will send out a group through the Google Group. If you are not already signed up for the Google Group, and want to stay informed, send an to voyagerresort@gmail.com and request to join with your full name and Voyager address. Once again this year A BIG SHOUT OUT to ALL of the volunteers at Voyager. Without each of you, a community this size cannot continue to operate on the scale that is does. There are so many ways that people volunteer and I thank each of you that do! Now that Spring has officially sprung, it s time to say farewell for the summer to the majority of residents and visitors. Thank all of you for such a great season; I hope you all have a safe journey back home and a relaxing summer with family and friends. If you have address, phone or other contact information changes, let us know at the front desk prior to departing. Until the Fall - that is all - I m signing off until the next Compass in October! 9 FAITH, GIVING, AND THANKS THE CHAPLAIN S CORNER One of my favorite PEANUTS cartoons shows Snoopy the dog dancing like he does, and Lucy is shouting at him "Doom, defeat and despair! Tragedy!" On and on she goes, but Snoopy just keeps dancing. Finally, she just says, "It is no use. He is just too optimistic." I am for Snoopy and his optimism. Life has been tough for me this past year, but more than ever I am an optimist. Here is why: First. life comes to me as choices. We are confronted every day with decisions and it makes more sense to me to make choices that are optimistic. It is healthier, friendlier, more hopeful, and more loving to be positive in my outlook. I have good evidence to back me up. The Voyager Community is a vibrant and generous place in which to live. There are a dozen or more neighborhoods in this park, and people look out for one another. One elderly couple lived here for six years and neither one could drive. Their neighbors took care of them! Second, this place keeps me optimistic because of Voyager generosity. We give of time, energy, and resources to a multitude of causes. This park could not function without the volunteers that help. Third, and most important to me of course, is that we are a worshiping community. We have chapel services here year round, and many who do not come to chapel go to local services. Prayer group and Bible studies are vital and lively. There is more that I could say, but I will just say this. Voyager, and Voyager people cared for me and my family at the time of my wife's death in ways that have deepened my faith in God who loves me - and you, too - with a love that never quits. That is true even when we feel lost or broken, and when the sunshine doesn t seem to be shining on us. God is still God and his love is still with us. That, friends, is cause enough for me to be optimistic. Ray W. Burgess Interdenominational Easter Services Sunday, April 1 9:40 AM in the Ballroom Everyone is welcome! 10 NEIGHBOR TO NEIGHBOR Sandy Farone (B) # Jane Kenworthy (V) # Jean Cary (C) # If you are or know of someone in need, give us a call! Neighbor to Neighbor is a group of about 75 terrific volunteers who help other Voyager residents in need. We match a person in need with someone who is able to meet that need. To volunteer, pick up an application in the Activity Office. Call Jane Kenworthy at for more info. In addition to matching need to helper, Neighbor to Neighbor keeps a list of resident caregivers, house-cleaners, dog-walkers, dog-sitters and ride-providers. These are longer term, paid individuals who want to help other Voyager residents. To be placed on this list, call Jane Kenworthy at # FAITH, GIVING, AND THANKS Community Cares Are you living alone, ill, injured, or fragile and would appreciate a FREE daily check for health and safety? If the answer is yes, the Community Cares Program can meet that need. As a participant, you are given a set of cards illustrating days of the week; it is your responsibility to display the correct day in your window before 10 each morning. Volunteers check each day; if the display is correct, they continue on their way. If not, you will receive a knock on your door, a phone call, or other instructions to confirm your health or safety is not in danger. Sign up as a Community Cares volunteer by calling: Ann Ruelle #6191 or Judy Williamson # We need you! 12 ACTIVITY UPDATES ARTS & CRAFTS NIMBLE FINGERS Thank you to everyone in the amazing Voyager community for your support this year, especially for your contributions to our recent underwear drive for the children serviced by Aviva here in Tucson. We collected 217 packages containing 1114 items,15 onesies for infants and monetary donations of We are humbled by your generous outpouring. The need is great. We are fortunate to be able to assist and for that we THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts. So far this season we have distributed 2,206 handmade items to the worthwhile agencies we support. Our cupboards are full again, and we will distribute these items in April. All this is possible through your generous donations and the members hard work. We use donated yarn for hats, slippers, afghans, baby items and toe covers for folks with leg casts to keep their tootsies warm. (These are especially popular at the VA.) Donated fabric goes to make cancer hats, walker bags, tote bags and duffle bags that various agencies request; we also make sun dresses and pajama bottoms (we include a matching t-shirt with both) and household items. We use every scrap of donated yarn and fabric. We meet year around, so come join us any Monday or Friday in the Palo Verde Room, 1:00-3:30pm.
