Make note of lane signage (Fast, Medium, Slow, Closed, etc.). 2. Spend a few minutes observing and roughly timing the pace of swimmers already in the pool. 3. Select a lane containing swimmers moving as closely as possible to the pace that one realistically expects to swim throughout his or her entire workout. Once you choose a lane, carefully check the position and speed of other swimmers before entering, preferably to one side of the lane. Incumbent swimmers have an initial right of way and may need a lap or two to adjust to your presence. During a swim, swimmers should observe and respect the pace and workout routines of other swimmers in their lane by: 1. Staying constantly aware of other swimmers presence (eg. move up a lane if you are constantly passing swimmers or down a lane if you are constantly being passed). 2. Explicitly informing other swimmers of your intentions (eg. gently but distinctly touch the feet of a swimmer before you pass them. If you get touched, continue to the wall then stop in the corner to let the faster swimmer pass). 3. Knowing common lap swimming etiquette (eg. allow swimmers doing faster strokes to swim ahead). 4. Applying common sense at all times (eg. share the space as best you can... no one has a right to own a lane indefinitely or insist on their own idiosyncratic rules.) The nature of lap swimming is incredibly dynamic and can change many times throughout a single workout. When in doubt, communicate with people in your lane and, if all else fails, ask the lifeguard. It is not the role of a lifeguard to constantly police the lanes, but they are happy to answer questions about common conventions and provide suggestions for possible solutions. Happy Swimming!!! source: Art Hutchinson 19

22 Backcountry Safety There are countless outdoor activities to occupy your time in the Okanagan. Whatever activity you choose or for however long, Search and Rescue professionals encourage you to remember the 3 Ts: 1. Trip Plan: Tell someone where you re going. Everyone is encouraged to leave a detailed trip plan. Try to answer the Ws: Where are you going? Be specific; state the exact trail you ll be traveling on, not just the general area. Who are you with? How many people in your party? Does anyone have any health concerns that need to be stated in the trip plan? What activity are you doing? You can get much farther on a mountain bike then on foot. This would change the whole dynamic of a search. When will you be returning home? Again, be specific. Ensure that whomever you leave your trip plan with knows that it is their responsibility to follow up with you if they don t hear from you. Make sure to leave a trip plan if you re going on a week-long camping trip with your family, or a half hour walk with the dogs. The key is to get into the habit of leaving a trip plan. 2. Train: Sport specific or location specific training is available Take a course on how to roll a kayak or Avalanche Skills Training if you re going snowshoeing You can also get training applicable to all activities First aid training or navigational training, such as orienteering Training does not have to be expensive; it can be as simple as research and practice Practice starting a fire in the rain or building a shelter in the backyard 3. Take the essentials: It is important to remember that although there is a base set of essentials that are recommended for every outdoor activity, each activity comes with its own set of essentials For example, mountain biking requires a helmet, protective gear, a repair kit for your bike, and so on. PENSAR Team The most important thing that people can do for Search and Rescue is to leave a trip plan. This can make the difference of being found in a matter of hours versus a matter of days. Have a conversation with children about what to do if they get lost. There is an online video called Hug-A-Tree and Survive. It educates children and adults on what to do is if anyone is to ever get separated or lost. Hug-A-Tree and Stay Put applies to adults as well. If an adult is to get lost, it is important that they STOP! Hunker down and wait for help. Keep yourself warm and dry. Make sure to do your best to be seen and be heard: make an SOS on the ground, use an emergency whistle to call for help. Trust that Search and Rescue is on the way, don t continue to move around. 23 Wildfire Evacuation and What to Do Residents of Penticton may be displaced by wildfires, we want to help prepare you ahead in case of an evacuation alert or order that may displace your family from your home. In such stressful circumstances, the most important thing to remember is to stay calm, listen to local public officials, and if possible, access online social media channels or for information updates. In the event an evacuation alert is issued for your area: Prepare to leave your home on short notice. Stay tuned to Penticton s official public information channels Have your emergency kit and important documents ready to go, which should include things like insurance and personal papers such as birth certificates. You should also pack: o Several days clothing. o Medicine/prescriptions. o For your children, comfort items, like a favourite toy or colouring books to help keep them busy. o For your pets, leashes, carriers and pet food. Consider collecting precious photos and mementoes that can t be replaced. As well, please check in on any family, friends or neighbours who may need a helping hand due to mobility or other issues. FOLLOW US ON In the event of an evacuation order, you must leave the area immediately. The City of Penticton will not ask you to leave without good reason, and failing to leave when asked to by officials puts yourself and others at risk. When an evacuation order is issued: Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes to help protect you from unforeseen hazards. Collect family members or go to the place designated in your family plan as a meeting place. Plan to take your pets with you; do not leave them behind. Because pets are not permitted in public shelters, follow your plan to go to a relative or friend s home, or find a pet-friendly hotel. Grab your emergency kit and follow the directions to the identified reception centre usually at the Community Centre on Power St. Follow the routes specified by emergency officials. Avoid shortcuts they could take you to a blocked or dangerous area. Take critical items already in your kit (medicine, purse, wallet and keys). Take your pets in kennels or on a leash. Close all doors and windows. Close and latch gates. Take a cell phone if you have one. If there is time and it is safe to do so, shut off water at the main line into your home, and switch off electricity at the breaker panel. Leave natural gas service on. Stay well away from any downed power lines. If you go to an evacuation centre, sign up with the registration desk so you can be contacted or reunited with your family and loved ones. Contact your out-of-area emergency contact (identified in your personal emergency plan) to let them know what has happened, that you are okay, and how to contact you. Alert them to any separated family members. City of Penticton officials will advise you when it s safe to return home. 21

To find out how PacificSport Okanagan is powering sport, go to Dodd Road, Kelowna, BC V1X 5H To Register, call or visit For more information, call or go to Physical Literacy: What Is It? Physical literacy is the ability of a person to confidently perform movement skills in different environments such as on the ground, in the air, on ice or snow, or in water. If a child feels confident in their movement skills before the age of 12, they are more likely to be active for life. Movement skills are life skills, and include agility, balance, coordination, speed, running, jumping, throwing, catching, striking, etc. How do we learn movement skills & physical literacy? Just like a child has to be taught their ABCs before they can write words or be taught numbers before they can add and subtract, children need to be taught how to move. Like the other forms of literacy, physical literacy is best taught at a young age. Our programs focus on teaching kids the movement skills so they can feel confident in playing games and sports with their friends! Our staff are trained in NCCP: Fundamental Movement Skills, Athletics BC Run Jump Throw, Gymnastics BC Kids Can Move, and other physical literacy based programs. Sport for Life PacificSport Okanagan leads and facilitates education opportunities through offering a variety of programs and services, embracing the Canadian Sport for Life principles to build healthy communities at all stages of the Canadian Sport for Life continuum in our region. 76 parks Our City Parks The Parks Department offers a wide array of publicly accessible Parkland and outdoor amenities for use by the residents and visitors of the City of Penticton. To safely make these features available to our users we have individuals (staff) within the department that are trained in a variety of different specializations including but not limited to; ISA Arborists, CSA Playground inspectors, Gardeners with 2 year horticulture diploma, Level I First Aid, Certified boat operators, Irrigation backflow specialists, and many other certifications to ensure that Parks are a safe and enjoyable location for people to experience the outdoors. Dogs in Parks Parks are a popular place to take man s best friend and dogs are welcome ON LEASH in many of Penticton s parks. Please remember to enjoy our parks and green spaces responsibly; be courteous, keep your dog leashed, pick up after them, and muzzle them if necessary. Dogs are not allowed on Sports Fields, Cemeteries, Beaches (except where designated), School property or near Children s Playgrounds. The staff within the Parks Department take great pride in developing and maintaining the Public lands that we have been mandated to provide care for. Collaborating with our staff regarding their different areas of expertise allows the department to actively promote any new developments that would help to improve current park users and future visitors experiences within the parks. The parks department also recognizes the importance of having and maintaining good relationships with various community members and organizations in order to design/plan for future projects within city limits. We prioritize inclusivity within our staff, our department, and in our community. OFF LEASH AREAS Penticton has three off-leash dog parks, and three off-leash beach areas for locations and more information please visit us online at and search Dogs in Parks. 74 information and registration

77 Cycling Network Additions parks The City of Penticton is proud to announce the latest additions to the Cycling Network in Penticton. Two separate projects were completed by Penticton & Area Cycling Association Poplar Grove Parking lot on Naramata Road & the Penticton BMX 630 Munson Mountain Road respectively. PACA with the support of a number of sponsors completed construction of a cycle pump track, this track is designed to be ridden without the aid of pedaling to get around the track. The intent for the rider is to gain momentum by pumping the legs and arms up and down as the bike progresses though the whoops or rolling bumps and berms in the track. To see the project to completion, PACA members donated dozens of hours of volunteer time to organize, project manage and help build the track. PACA also received over $40,000 in support from the following people & organizations for development of the Poplar Grove Pump Track. Peter Bros. Construction Grizzly Excavation Enns Family Ridgeline Forest Products Home Hardware Penticton & Area Cycling Association Beecroft Fuels RONA City of Penticton For more information on local cycling opportunities visit Photo Credit: Penticton and Area Cycling Association The Penticton BMX Club has also introduced a new cycling facility that was funded through donor support and club member volunteer involvement, this facility will allow the club the opportunity to host larger events and it also will help to encourage more people to get out on their bikes and experience a world class BMX track right in our back yard. This facility is an amazing upgrade from the former location at Lion s Park. When you are at the new location at 630 Munson Mountain Road you can enjoy vineyard, lake and mountain views, but of course, don t forget to take your bike for a couple of laps around the track to experience part of what the riders experience while racing other competitors to the finish line. As stated earlier, these types of projects only happen through the generous donations of many people and organizations, the major sponsor on this project include: Grizzly Excavation Structurlam Maurer Cranes Chute Creek Industries Peter Bros. Beecroft Fuels City of Penticton To see a complete list of donor visit the BMX track in the Spring and view the plaque that has been installed onsite, with any project that includes donated time, materials and equipment, every donation is as important as the other, no matter what the value. 75
