14 ROSSLAND POOL Lesson Information Progression from Preschool to RCSK Lessons When your child is 6 years of age, they are ready to move up to the RCSK Lessons. The information below shows how the Preschool classes transfer. Red Cross Preschool Lessons (3-6 years) Sea Otter 3-5 years Salamander 3-5 years Sunfish 3-6 years Crocodile 3-6 years Whale 3-6 years Red Cross Swim Kids Lessons (6-12 years) RCSK 1 RCSK 2 RCSK 3 RCSK 4 When registering your child for their next level, please remember a few important tips. Learning to swim is like learning to walk it requires specific muscles that can support the activity, a certain size, the ability to put it all together and a whole lot of practice! Just like there is no failing at learning to walk, there is no failing at learning to swim. Swimmers learn new skills in each level and often require more practice at those skills, before they can move to the next level, where new skills are introduced. To ensure your child has the best opportunity for practice, growth, muscle development, acquiring skills and ultimately success - keep your child s age 2-3 more than their swimming level. So if your child is 8 years old, they should be swimming at Level 5-6. If your child is 10 years old, they should not progress past Level 8, until they turn 11. This allows the child to grow and develop the muscle mass, strength and endurance that is required for successful completion of each level. Successful completion means the swimmer has mastered the skills required and results in increased confidence, pride and enjoyment in the water. Registration Note for Parents: Please be advised that it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to register children in the correct level of our swim program. Instructors assess all students on the first day of lessons to ensure that they have been placed correctly. In the event that a child has not been placed correctly, s(he) may be permitted to transfer to an alternate level, based on program availability, at the discretion of the Instructors. If no spots are available in an appropriate level, the child may be withdrawn from the lessons and placed in the next available set. Not sure which level to register in? If you re unsure what level your child should be registered in or it has been over a year since their last session, drop by for a FREE evaluation. One of our qualified Instructors will assess your child and recommend the appropriate Red Cross level for enrollment. Cancelled Classes Mother Nature can make outdoor lessons challenging and in the case of a cancelled class due to weather (lightening, thunder or heavy rain) we will provide you with a Rain Check, to be used with future programming. FREE Lesson Assessments! We offer free lesson assessments to ensure your child gets into the right level. Please ask one of the Lifeguards when you re enjoying Public Swim, or contact the Pool to arrange for a time that works for your schedule. Class Size Ratios We have lowered the class sizes to ensure the Instructors have as much time as possible to work with each swimmer. Levels 1-5: 5:1 Levels 6-7: 6:1 Levels 8-10: 8:1 14

15 ROSSLAND POOL Preschool Lessons, June - August Preschool Swim Lessons - ages 3 to 6 Preschool swim lessons are for children ages 3-6 who are able to touch in the shallow end. To register your child, please refer to their last completed swimming level and register them for the next one. If you re not sure which level is right for your child, please refer to the descriptions of each level, or arrange for your child to be assessed. Parents and caregivers are welcome in the pool, if needed. ROSSLAND s BEARS Summer time in a Community that Cares about Bears! Rossland s bears are part of our community. Their families go back generations, just like many of the human families who call Rossland home. As community members, they do their best to not bother the neighbors or get into trouble and they will do everything they can to avoid you. Do your part to be responsible and caring and look after your garbage. Although their natural diet is mostly vegetarian, bears have a great sense of smell and are easily attracted to garbage. Cubs and their moms should not be exposed to garbage. Council recently adopted revisions to the City s Wildlife Attractant Control Bylaw in order to aid in reducing human-wildlife conflicts within the City. Any garbage being placed in front of a residence must be in a sealed container with a secure lid. Stickers must still be placed on the bag and the bag must be placed in the sealed container. As a community, lets do our part to keep Rossland a safe place to live for everyone (and every bear!) who lives here. For more information about being Bear Aware, please contact WildSafe BC at or City Hall, at
