2 Transition News This week in Transition we are happy to announce that the children are settling in extremely well. They are getting to know their new routine and friendships are already forming. Our class work this week has been associated with two nursery rhymes, Jack and Jill and Hickory, Dickory Dock. We have painted Jack and Jill s pail and have made a clock with a mouse running up it. We have explored the colour blue and investigated squares. The children have been telling their classmates all about themselves and their family during news this week. It is pleasing to witness so many confident children. We enjoy having Mrs Parkinson as our Assistant, Father Paul for Christian Studies, Library with Mrs Wells, PE with Mr Jackman and music with Mrs Fogarty. We look forward to catching up with all the Transition families at the Junior School picnic on Tuesday on the Junior School oval. Regards, Deb Porter and Jane Parkinson Kaitlyn and Banjo and Maddelyn and Samuel enjoy acting out the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill. Aston doing some running repairs on the cubby house. LIBRARY CORNER with Michelle O Brien Tuesday saw the nationwide launch of The National Year of Reading 2012 with the slogan Discover and rediscover the joy of reading. Throughout the year there will be events and celebrations of reading across Australia, for both adults and children. In the Junior School Library we are planning a number of events and activities of our own to celebrate the year. Today, our children have so much choice in reading formats. In our increasingly visual world the traditional print book has been transformed with amazing covers and illustrations to appeal to children of all ages. Most all authors for young people have their own websites with information about themselves and their books. ebooks are the latest format taking the world by storm and bring a whole new dimension to reading. Treat yourself with a look at the crossover book/film called The Amazing Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore, if you can. What can parents do to encourage their children to enjoy reading? Read to them every day, if possible. Even Year 6 students are not too big to be read to. Be a role model by reading yourself, talk about your reading and ask your children about theirs. Just remember that reading is meant to be a pleasure, not work! Have a look at the website for more information: The last word goes to Richard Glover from his column in last week-end s SMH: Books can take you to new worlds, provide solace when you are lonely and allow you to enjoy the joy and pain of others HAPPY READING EVERYONE! James digs a hole in the sandpit. Archer borrows a book from the library. Ben shows us his new spider monkey toy during news. Bathurst Eisteddfod is looking for volunteers for this year s event in September. Please contact Paula on for further information.
3 JUNIOR SCHOOL INTER-HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL 2012 In very ordinary conditions the Junior School swimming carnival went ahead last Friday. Our super keen, infants students began the morning with a splash and dash across the pool. With the help of our Yr 6 students many swam or were shuffled across the pool in record time, all were chuffed with their yellow ribbon. The serious races began soon after with the threat of inclement weather on the horizon. Our luck ran out half way through the backstroke events, races were abandoned as the weather passed. Fortunately this break coincided with morning tea and students were able to recharge in preparation for further competition. All students must be congratulated for the way they participated and conducted themselves throughout the morning. Whilst there were many fine performances in the pool there were three records broken on the day. Congratulations must be extended to our 3 little sprinters, Kate Dowd, Maddie Sanger and Georgie Geyer who all broke the record in the 8 Yrs, 25m Freestyle event. Kate winning the event holds the new record with a smashing time of 19.89sec. Georgie Geyer s name will also appear in future programs as a record holder for the 8 Yrs 25m Breaststroke. Georgie impressively shaved a second off the previous record, swimming the distance in 27.62sec. The 4 junior Esrom boys swam a fabulous race in the 4 x25m freestyle relay, they too broke the record swimming that race in a time of Congratulations to Angus Rendall, Jock Sutton, Mitch Nelson and Sam Rendall. Many thanks must go to the staff and parents who assisted on the day. As always their help (in so many ways) is welcomed and very much appreciated, we really could not run a carnival without their support and assistance. Throughout the carnival the scores between the 2 houses were incredibly close and at times locked even. The students waited with baited breath whilst Mr. Jackman announced that Bradwardine were the 2012 winners by a mere 2 points. Congratulations to both houses for such a fine competition! Congratulations to the following age champions and runner/up recipients: AGE CHAMPION RUNNER UP 8 Yrs Boys Will Purvis Patrick Saint 8 Yrs Girls Georgie Geyer Kate Dowd 9 Yrs Boys Mitch Nelson Angus Rendall 9 Yrs Girls Megan Redpath Lauren Lyons 10 Yrs Boys Sam Rendall Ben Cant 10 Yrs Girls Isabella Siegert Claudia Cunningham Samantha Porter 11 Yrs Boys Bailey Jardine Tim Jackman 11 yrs Girls Lucy Corbett-Jones Rachel Corbett-Jones 12 Yrs Boys Nic Booth Jordan Muller 12 Yrs Girls Anna Van Heekeren Amber Stockman Kay Nelson
