2 HOW TO REGISTER Program Registrations Pre-registration is required for all programs unless otherwise listed. Drop in classes require payment to the instructor before the start of class. Calistoga Recreation Services cannot hold space in any class or activity unless you have registered and paid. PLEASE REGISTER EARLY All programs have a minimum registration number and if we don t reach that pre-registration number we have to cancel the class. All programs also have a maximum registration number and if we reach that pre-registration number the program will be full. Please check our website or call our office for program availability. Online Registration Calistoga Recreation Services has a convenient registration system that allows you to register online. Participants in the program can complete their own personal enrollment from home. To do so, visit our website calistogarecreation.com. Once there, press the On-Line Registration button located on the left side of the menu. If you have not yet registered or created your own account, press the create account button and follow the instructions. If you have registered you can press the Sign-In button to register, see previous and current registrations. Visit our website to create your account at calistogarecreation.com. If you or your child require special assistance call Program Cancellations/ Modifications Calistoga Recreation Services reserves the right to cancel or modify a program due to low enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. Registrants will be notified by if changes occur to their programs. Refunds A request for a refund due to withdrawal from a program must be made to the recreation office a week prior to the start of the first class. If a program is cancelled by Calistoga Recreation Services, a full refund will be issued. Program Instructors We re always on the lookout for instructors to teach classes on new and exciting subjects. If you have a specialty you would like to share, we want to work with you to develop new programs. Contact Rachel Melick at for more information. 4 WELCOME Welcome to Summer 2017 at Calistoga Recreation Services. We couldn t be more excited about the activities that we have planned for the summer. From swimming and specialty camps for youth to walking groups and yoga classes for seniors we truly have something for everyone. Calistoga is rich in opportunities for recreation and we hope that everyone can get out and enjoy these great opportunities. Take a look at our new guide, to explore the many options we have for recreational activities. We hope to see everyone out on all the different playing fields throughout the summer! Rachel Melick, Recreation Manager We are very lucky to live in such a great community surrounded by the beautiful outdoors of Calistoga. We are a destination known throughout the world as a center for health and wellness. We are also fortunate to have such great weather, most of the time! Combining these elements makes it easy for all of us, young and mature, to get out and play! Our recreation department has put together another fantastic series of summer programming with many options for all. Let s take advantage of that and mix and mingle with our neighbors and friends while having the opportunity to make new friends. We have a rich and vibrant culture in Calistoga and engaging the mind and the body are easy to do with all of the programs outlined in this guide. 5 CALISTOGA EVENTS Recreation Events Downtown Historic Walking Tour April PM Meet at the Sharpsteen Museum Interested in learning more about the history of Calistoga? Enjoy walking downtown? Learn more about the historic buildings in Calistoga! The walk will include several historical buildings all within easy walking distance of downtown. Enjoy a stroll through Calistoga s history. Co-sponsored by Calistoga Recreation and Rianda House Senior Activity Center. Citywide Yard Sale April 22 9AM-1PM Within Calistoga Celebrate Earth Day with Calistoga Recreation Service s Citywide Yard Sale! Register by April 3rd to have your house placed on the citywide yard sale map. Yard sales will be held at various locations throughout Calistoga. Calistoga Community Trip to the Giants Game June 14 9AM-6PM Meet at Logvy Park or Rianda House All community members are invited to watch the San Francisco Giants take on the Kansas City Royals! Travel to the game on a coach bus from Calistoga to AT&T Park. The bus will depart from Calistoga at 9:00AM, and will pick up at Rianda House in St. Helena at 9:30AM. The game starts at 12:45PM. The bus will depart 30 minutes after the last out. All ages, families, friends, and community members are welcome to join! Fee: $60 CALISTOGA EVENTS SUMMER

6 CALISTOGA EVENTS Community Events July Fourth Parade July 4 11AM Floats and fire engines and horses, oh my! For over 100 years Napa County Fair & Fireworks 4th of July parade has celebrated patriotism and local pride. Red, white and blue are the colors of the day from bunting on hotel fronts to decorations in the parade, thousands line the streets of downtown Calistoga to welcome and cheer their favorite floats and performers. Join in as the crowd dances its way into the Napa County Fair & Fireworks in procession behind the marching band. Napa County Fair & Fireworks July 4 12PM Celebrate an all-american, vintage 4th of July with summer sizzle with a nostalgic Parade in charming Calistoga and a day of carnival rides, classic contests, live music, entertainment, and more at the Fair. Enjoy a glass of wine or a cold brew along with award-winning olive oils, chef showcases, and art & photography shows. Bring the kids or bring the kid in you! Entertainers stroll among guests, exhibits display blue ribbons, and everyone s invited to be a farmer-for-a-day in Kid Kountry, compete in our Ice Cream Churnament, and to create art projects at the Make & Take Center. And of course, a 4th of July wouldn't be complete without fireworks... and Napa County Fair & Fireworks offers the only choreographed Fireworks Sky Concert in the wine country! Concerts in the Park June 15-August 17 Thursdays 6:30-8:30PM Pioneer Park Along with your best group of friends or extended family, bring your blankets, chairs and picnic dinner to enjoy this Calistoga favorite summer celebration. Just when you thought the deal couldn t get any better, adult beverages are allowed (for those 21 and over) and select, local wines available for purchase, highlighting a different winery each week. 7 RECREATION SERVICES PROGRAMS Get Out & Play Co-Ed Softball League (18+ YRS) We are proud to announce our fifth season of coed adult softball! Get some friends together for fun evenings on the diamond. All pitching is underhand and batters will alternate male-female. Signups start Monday, April 3rd, and final day to register is Friday, May 19th. A mandatory team manager s meeting to be scheduled prior to season start date. Location: Logvy Park 5/30-8/10 Tues/Thur 5-8PM Fee: $550 Inaugural Napa Valley Softball Classic Tournament (18+ YRS) Join us for the first annual Napa Valley Classic. Entries are limited to eight teams, so be sure to sign up early to guarantee a place in the tournament. The tournament will be one pitch, with each team guaranteed three games. We will have BBQ and beer available for purchase. Make sure to bring the whole family down as the pool will be open to enjoy between games. Location: Logvy Park 8/5 8AM-Finish Fee: $250 per team Let s Go Swimming Vamos A Nadar Enjoy a family swim lesson that focuses on water comfort, basic swimming skills and water safety. The event will include a rescue demonstration and discussion by Calistoga s certified lifeguards, discount coupons for swim lessons, and a healthy snack. 8 SENIOR PROGRAMS (50+ YRS) Keeping Minds Young & Bodies Strong The City of Calistoga Recreation Services is proud to collaborate with different organizations throughout Napa Valley. One of our major collaborators for senior programs is with Rianda House in St. Helena. Rianda House activities inspires individuals to live life to its fullest by learning, sharing and exploring new possibilities together. We invite all UpValley older adults to enjoy these enriching activities offered, at no-cost, in Calistoga at the Community Center. Rianda House, a 501c3 non-profit organization is funded solely by our generous community and supportive grants. We are committed to providing UpValley seniors with programs, support services and experiences that stimulate minds, strengthen bodies, and promote independent living through education, recreation and social involvement. Rianda House Senior Activity Center 1475 Main Street, St. Helena CA riandahouse.org Walking Group Join Recreation Staff on a mid-morning outing to different locations around Calistoga. We will keep a nice, steady pace to enjoy some exercise as well as the sights around town. The kick-off event will be the Historic Walking Tour co-hosted by Rianda House on April 19. 10 YOUTH PROGRAMS Sports & Activities Hoop It Up Basketball Camp (6-12 YRS) The HOOP IT UP Camp is packed with skills, drills and daily competitions! This camp is designed to help your child fall in love with the game and make them a better basketball player. Whether they are a beginner or intermediate player, the drills taught at this camp will help them improve your game. They will learn: footwork, passing, ball-handling and defense. Participants will enjoy fun challenges, games and daily competitions in a positive and energetic environment. FEATURES: Personal Player Video, RSBQ Workouts, Confidence Builders Program, Daily Chalk Talks and Skill of the Day. 7/5-7/7 9AM-12PM Fee: $85 9AM-3PM Fee: $115 In The Net Soccer Camp (6-12 YRS) These soccer camps offer beginner to intermediate players the opportunity to build a solid soccer foundation. On the field each day, players will improve their individual skills and tactical awareness. Each day is filled with fundamental skill progression drills, easy to understand instruction, as well as games and competition. Not only are group drills stressed, but also much time is spent on individual work. This is a great place to develop their individual soccer skills and confidence in a fun and positive environment. Participants will learn different rescue skills and techniques used by lifeguards including basic first aid, pool safety and rules, weather safety, survival skills and emergency response. We are excited to partner with Calistoga Fire Department in order to offer participants an insider view of the fire station and the important role firefighters play in the event of an emergency at the pool. Additionally, we will take a field trip to the Spring Lake swimming lagoon for a day on the water park! Fun and traditional camp activities like team building games will be included and all participants will be given a whistle and a junior lifeguard shirt. 12 CAMP CALISTOGA Class Descriptions Batman s Gotham Gadgets with LEGO (6-12 YRS) Take on Gotham's villains by designing and building Batman's favorite crime-fighting machines! Build the Bat Tumbler, craft a Batwing, and design your very own Batcave, all out of LEGO. Then use your projects to help save the city! This is a 2 period class. 7/24-7/ AM 10:15-11:15AM Fee: $80 (per session) STEM FUNdamentals with LEGO (6-12 YRS) Power on your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies, and tens of thousands of LEGO! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as Snowmobiles, Towers, Catapults, and Battletracks! Design and build as never before! 7/24-7/28 11:30AM-12:30PM Fee: $40 Bashem Bots using LEGO (6-12 YRS) Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a massive motorized LEGO machine? Students will reengineer standard LEGO vehicles into mechanized machines that can navigate challenging obstacles, battle against fellow bots, and take on Play-Well Instructors colossal creations. Make 3-D wood sculptures, discover the magic of printmaking and learn new ways to paint. Campers spend two class periods exploring our vast outdoor options and looking at different plants, animals, and habitats that are native to this region. Activities will include hiking various local trails and learning some basics about hiking and how to stay safe outdoors. Please make sure campers wear sturdy shoes and sunscreen; we advise bringing a small backpack and water bottle. Program Descriptions Recreational (Rec) Swim: Pools will be open for use to all ages. Aqua Tots: Designated pool time for you and your toddler! Pool toys will be available for fun in the small pool. Water Aerobics: Water fitness class focusing on strength, aerobic and resistance training for people of all levels. Aqua Yoga: Partnered with Calistoga Fit, this water fitness class uses the principles and movements of Yoga, and adapts them to the water environment. Aqua Boot Camp: Partnered with Calistoga Fit, this high energy class uses a combo of aqua aerobics and traditional boot camp style moves in the pool to tone and strengthen the body. Aqua Aerobics: Partnered with Calistoga Fit, this shallow water aqua class focuses on using the natural resistance of the water to tone and challenge the muscles in a joint friendly manner. 16 AQUATICS Swim Lessons Come learn to swim and have fun with us and our instructors! We have options for all ages and abilities in both of our pools. Classes are listed in order of progression levels, with dates and times listed below in the swim lesson schedule. Please see class skill level breakdown for beginning, intermediate or advanced placement or our swim lesson class descriptions and requirements to find out what class will best suit your needs. Swim Lesson Skill Level Beginner Are you brand new to swimming or uncomfortable in the water? Then these classes are for you! 17 Swim Lesson Class Descriptions Shrimp and Lobster (6 MO-2 YRS) These classes are designed for parental participation in the water and emphasize water adjustment, and beginning swimming skills, including floating, kicking, bubble blowing, and water play. Parents and children will sing songs and explore the pool together. Parent Participation required. Location: Little pool Starfish (3-5 YRS) This is for beginning young swimmers who are unsure of the water. Introductory skills are taught using water play to get beginning swimmers comfortable in and around the water. Participants will learn many skills, including bubble blowing, putting their face in the water, and how to return to the wall. No prerequisite required. Location: Little Pool Guppy (3-5 YRS) This class is for swimmers still learning about water. It focuses on pool safety, play, and transitions into independent skills. Participants will work on floating on both their front and back, as well as introductory kicking. Prerequisite: completion of Starfish, or participant must be able to put his/her face under water and do three consecutive bobs. Location: Little Pool Otter (3-5 YRS) This class is for swimmers who are comfortable in the water but lack the knowledge of formal swim strokes. Students will learn arms strokes and combining and coordinating skills will be worked on in this class. Perquisite: completion of Guppy or comfortable in the water and able to back float with assistance. Location: Little Pool Seahorse (6-12 YRS) Beginning swimmers who are unsure of the water. Basic skills such as blowing bubbles, bobs, and floating will be emphasized and comfort in the water will be the primary focus. No prerequisite required. Location: Little or Big Pool depending on class size and ages of participants. Turtle (6-12 YRS) This class is for beginning swimmers who like the water but have no real swim technique knowledge. Basic skills such as submerging their heads, floating, and beginning arm strokes will be taught, as well as breath control and water safety. Prerequisite: completion of Otter or Seahorse or able to float on front and back. Location: Big Pool Seal (6-12 YRS) Swimmers who are comfortable in the water and knows both basic strokes fundamentals and pool safety. Emphasis will be placed on front and back crawl mechanics. Prerequisite: completion of Turtle, or basic front and back crawl arm stroke knowledge. Location: Big Pool Ray (6 12 YRS) Swimmers will work on endurance during front and back crawl and an introduction to side breathing and breast stroke. Prerequisite: Completion of Seal or front and back crawl 5 stroke lengths. Location: Big Pool Swordfish (6 12 YRS) Swimmers will work on stroke refinement and power, and emphasis will be placed on learning breaststroke and the swimming 25 yards with rotary breathing. Prerequisite: Completion of Ray or front crawl and back crawl 10 stroke lengths with rotary breathing. Location: Big Pool Porpoise (6 12 YRS) Swimmers will work on advanced techniques for front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke. There will be emphasis placed on introducing butterfly, detailed stroke refinement and efficiency, and swimming full lengths of the pool. Prerequisite: Completion of Swordfish or ability to swim 25 yards of front crawl with rotary breathing and knowledge of backstroke. Location: Big Pool Waves Aquatics Swim Team In Calistoga (6-17 YRS) The Waves swim team is looking for enthusiastic youths to join our competitive year round team. Have fun, build friendships and train to be the strongest swimmer you can be! Our caring, professional coaching staff will not only teach your child to swim all four strokes but will help them learn team spirit, cooperation and how to set and achieve realistic advancement goals. Evaluations and registration will be scheduled on May 24 and :30PM.
