It seems as though the summer is flying by so quickly. My first year as president is almost over already. Susan Rutherford and I were lucky to get tickets for Wimbledon this year. It was an amazing experience to be able to attend this most traditional tournament. We enjoyed strawberries and cream, as did many of you who attended the Wimbledon Morning event on July 4th. About 20 members watched the men s finals on the huge TV while enjoying strawberries and cream, coffee and other refreshment. Thanks so much to Joan Edwards, Joan Nutt and Joyce Macmillan who organized the event. Also thanks to Dick Harrald and his tournament volunteers who ran the Charity Ball, on July 10th. Monies raised will be donated to the Sunnybrook/Odette Cancer Research Centre. Continued on page 2 This Issue Presidents Message cont. 3 LTC NEWSLETTER: AUTUMN 3 Gus and the DSA I am proud and thrilled to announce that a long time member of Leaside Tennis Club, Gus Morhart, has been nominated and unanimously approved to receive a Tennis Canada Distinguished Service Award (DSA). This award was presented to Gus at the Rexall Centre during the Rogers Cup. The DSA Awards program recognizes individuals and organizations that have made a significant long-term contribution to the growth of tennis in Canada which is what Gus has done. This year 13 worthy recipients across Canada will be bestowed with a DSA award. Gus is not only a long time member of Leaside, but also provides a large number of prizes for our year end party. Congratulations to Gus, there is none more deserving. Editor Adult Team News The teams are wrapping up a good season as this newsletter goes to print. Right now both the B and C Mixed Inter- Harvey Rainbow and County teams are in the bottom half of the standings, but the pairings are gelling and captains Tracy Lutz (B team) and Karen Martin (C Team) are hopeful of some more points later in the season. The two Ladies Evening teams finished up with some great results, putting them both in third spot in their respective divisions. Again, Erica Gilbert was a stellar Division 4 captain who kept her team fed, watered and organized. Apparently she even kept them entertained with some witty s. Sheila Hunt was captain extraordinaire for the Division 2 team. Shelia attended every match (in heat, cold, and very thick mist) to watch and encourage us. The daytime spring teams have been finished for a while, with solid results once again. The C team was ably captained by Joan Nutt and although they finished lower than planned, they felt that they learned a lot, and did report that the food and fun were outstanding this year! The A team came up against a number of tennis pros across the net for their matches and their 3rd place result was very hard fought. Thanks to captain, Kristi Duncanson for some excellent herding skills this year...you were definitely up for the challenge. Kudos to the Leaside tennis pros who helped us gain the skills required to compete (Chris Little, Peter Cameron, Sujit Das, Jimmy Holland, Ethan Kern, Tom Kern). Thanks also to all the players who dedicated their time to the practices and matches, and to the court supervisors who help us to be so hospitable for our home matches. Gillian Kern, Teams Director

4 4 LTC NEWSLETTER: AUTUMN The "B" Team is all a Buzz If having fun and working hard were how we kept score - Leaside's Inter-county "B" Division team would be a great success. Unfortunately some people still use the old fashion method of scoring in games and sets. Despite struggling to win matches, the "B" Team has had some encouraging play to build on for next year: Kevin Bolger and Bill Yeates have set the Men's 1 division on fire. Some of our young men have also done well - Scott Maier, Edward Aust and Ethan Kern. As usual, we have relied upon some consistent play from our established pairs. Come out and support the team on Tuesday nights next year! If our team is to stay in the "B" division, it needs to attractt some of Leaside's good young players who are willing to make a commitment to play for their club. The tennis at this level is up tempo and enjoyable, providing an opportunity to test and improve your game against some of the best players from local clubs. The team captains - Tracy Lutz and Harvey Rainbow - hope the players will come out on Tuesday nights, throughout the fall, to continue working on development for the year. If you are interested in playing on the team or have questions about becoming involved, please contact Harvey Rainbow by h.j.rainbow@hotmail..com. Thank you to all who played this season and those who came out and supported the team with their cheers and applause. Harvey Rainbow, Co-Captain, Intercounty B Team Charity Ball Winners! The Charity Ball was held on July the 10th with great weather in our favour. The sign up was 24 participants with everyone donating a minimum of $10.00 which raised $ In total $ was raised which will go to the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital in the loving memory of our past president John Hunt. The tournament was a Round Robin format with the winners going into a winners group and the non winners going into a consolation group. The winners were Shewana and Zia Sheikh and in second place Pat Hynes and John Drummond. In the consolation series winners were Liz MacCleod and David Leong with Karen Martin and Harvey Rainbow in second place. The winners received gift certificates and all participants received canisters of balls. A healthy bar-b-que was held after and good fellowship was had by all. 6 6 LTC NEWSLETTER: AUTUMN Our Juniors are Outstanding! Leaside was well represented again this year at the Tennis Toronto s Junior Doubles Tournament. This tournament was held on June 19th at three locations across the city; Sir Winston Churchill, Wanless Park and Moore Park Tennis Clubs. In total 170 entrants participated, making this the largest Tennis Toronto Finals Tournament in memory. The Leaside team's results were outstanding. A big thank you goes out to George Cenic for some strategic coaching. Thanks also to the players and to the parents who helped get everyone to the right place at the right time! Junior Doubles End of Year Tournament Results Under 12 Ross Ramsey and Max Brodie Champions, Flight 2 Luke Rivet and Luka Green Semi-Finalists, Flight 3 Liam Mahoney and Faiz Haider Consolation Finalists, Flight 1 Under 18 Thomas Lawlor and Andrew Clinton Champions, Flight 2 James Manley and Liam Lawlor. Semi-Finalists, Flight 1 Reed Eckel and Michael Hood Semi-Finalists, Main Draw Chris s Coaching Corner Let me take this opportunity to clear up a few myths in tennis. Myth 1. Stop and get set before you hit the ball. It is almost impossible to come to a complete stop before you hit the ball. With the game as fast as it can be you are forced to hit the ball in more difficult situations. Sometimes you have to hit the ball while on the move. If you try to stop quickly your body continues to move forward as your legs lock up causing you to fall off balance or lunge. Myth 2. The volley is a put away shot. In coming to the net your goal is to eventually put the ball away however you have to learn control and placement before power. Most club players never learn the proper balance at the net because they try to do too much with the first volley. Think of coming to the net in two phases. First try to set yourself up with a first volley to open up the court and then, when the opportunity comes, move in and finish. Remember two volleys are better than one. Try these tips out and let me know what happens. Chris Little, Head Professional Website: leasidetennis.org for the latest updates

Susan Rutherford, Social Director Lucky Draw Winners The Lucky Draw Tournament had 32 participants and it was well into the third round when the skies opened up to rain. This forced an early start to the BBQ, which Alex and Susan Rutherford prepared and served. The winners of the tournament were Elizabeth Huesel and Harvey Rainbow with Noreen and Dick Harrald coming in second. Our special thanks to The Merchant of Tennis for their prizes of two tennis bags and gift certificates and also to LTC for the provision of cans of balls for the participants. 8 8 LTC NEWSLETTER: AUTUMN Junior News Junior Carnival The Junior Carnival was held on June 25. It was a beautiful sunny, warm evening and we had a great turn out from our junior members. Chris and Kyle organized a variety of fun games and competitions on each of the four upper courts and the juniors competed for some great prizes contributed by our generous sponsors. Many thanks to all of our sponsors, including the Merchant of Tennis, Gus Morehart, Ontario Tennis Association and the Toronto Tennis Academy. Thanks also to our tennis coaches, Chris, Kyle, George, Sean Kern, Ethan Kern and James Manley for their assistance in organizing all of the on-court events and to everyone who helped out with the refreshments, in particular, Stephanie Maier, Patrick Mahoney and our court supervisor, Paul. Junior Team The junior tennis team had a very good season this year, ending up in 4th place. Over 100 juniors came to the junior team tryouts and participated in matches on Saturday afternoons from April to Mid June. Well done Team. Junior Fall Clinics The Club will be running after school clinics for the juniors again this Fall. These will start on September 7 th, after the Labour Day weekend. Look for the clinic registration forms in the clubhouse starting at the end of August. Complete the form, make sure you have a cheque in the appropriate amount and give (form and cheque) to tennis pros, Kyle and Chris or one of the Supervisors, Rene or Paul. Junior Fall Tournament Don t forget to sign up for the Junior Fall tournament, scheduled for the weekend of September 24 to September 26 (Friday evening through Sunday). There will be events for U18, U16, U14, U12 and U10 girls and boys. In the past couple of years, there have been lots of boys in the U12-U18 events, but not many younger boys and hardly any girls. This year, for the younger Juniors, we will probably hold a round robin event, so that everyone gets at least two matches each. Depending on numbers, we will do the same for both the girls and the boys. So, girls, please come on out as the event is a lot of fun and there are prizes to be won! Look for the sign-up sheets in the clubhouse just after the Labour Day weekend. Diana Woodhead, Junior Development Website: leasidetennis.org for the latest updates
