The Hawks lost seven players, including four starters, from last season s team that advanced to the Northeast Conference Tournament Semifi nals, falling to eventual league champion Sacred Heart. This year s Hawks feature eight freshmen, one sophomore, three juniors (including one transfer who will sit out this season), one senior and one fi fth-year senior: that equates to nine new faces in the program. MU is the fi fth-youngest team in the nation: UT Martin (Ohio Valley Conference) 4 yrs. Experience Tennessee Tech (OVC) 4 yrs. Experience Arizona (Pac 10) 5 yrs. Experience Central Arkansas (Southland) 5 yrs. Experience Monmouth (NEC) 8 yrs. Experience CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS The Hawks lost a signifi cant amount of experience and fi repower from last season s squad. The team returns just 20.7% of its minutes played and a Division I-low 13.8% of its scoring from last season. Also, they return just 14.6% of their total rebounds and 13.3% of their assists from a year ago. Both of MU s double-digit scorers from last season, Jennifer Bender (16.1 ppg) and LaKia Barber (12.7 ppg), were both lost to graduation as MU will have to replace four starters this season. Monmouth, UC Riverside (84.1%), Maryland (77%), are the only three teams in the nation believed to have lost more than 75% of last year s scoring output. FAB FIVE PLUS TWO Seven of Monmouth s top eight scorers this season are freshmen. Five freshmen have earned starting assignments for the Hawks this season (Allen, Rooney, Womack, Martin, Singer), in addition to sophomore Alexis Canady. MU s freshmen have accounted for about 78.7% (596 of 757 total points) of the team s point total this season. SCORING SPREE The Monmouth women s basketball enjoyed an offensive explosion in its win over Central Connecticut State (01/07/10). Monmouth s 79 points marked the highest total the Hawks have scored in head coach Stephanie V. Gaitley s tenure in West Long Branch, and the Hawks 12 three-point fi eld goals tied a program mark set on February 14, 2005 against Saint Francis (Pa.). MU connected on its fi rst six shots, and seven of its fi rst eight, while the starters made their fi rst 12 shots of the game. The Hawks shot 59.6% (31-of-52) from the fl oor in the game, including a program-record 12-for-22 from beyond the arc. The Hawks added a season-high 21 assists in the contest. SHE S ON FIRE Freshman Alysha Womack could do no wrong in the Hawks win over CCSU (01/07/10). The newcomer hit her fi rst eight shots, including all seven in the fi rst half, adding four three-pointers in that span, en route to a career-high 25 points. She fi nished the game shooting 10-of-12 from the fl oor, including 5-for-5 from three-point range, in just 25 minutes of action. CHAMPIONSHIP HOLIDAY The Monmouth women s basketball team captured the inaugural Hawk Holiday Classic presented by Staybridge Suites and Hotels, held on December 29 and 30 at the Multipurpose Activity Center. MU defeated Howard in the fi rst game, 61-50, before coming back from down 19 points just before halftime to defeat La Salle in the title game, The Hawks shot 45.5% from the fi eld for the tournament, including 39.4% from three-point range (13-of-33), while limiting their two opponents to a combined 34% fi eld-goal shooting 28.6% from beyond the arc. AC = MVP Sophomore guard Alexis Canady was named the Most Valuable Player of the fi rst annual Hawk Holiday Classic, helping lead MU to the tournament title. In Monmouth s fi rst game against Howard (12/29/09), she tied her career-high with 16 points on a career-best fi ve three-pointers and added a career-high four assists. In the title game win over La Salle (12/30/09), she scored seven points while supplying stingy defense and solid leadership in helping the Hawks overcome a 19-point defi cit late in the fi rst half.

3 IT ALWAYS COMES IN THREE S The most improved aspect of the Monmouth women s basketball team from last season to this one has been its long-range shooting. Last season, the Hawks hit just 26.8% from three-point range, hitting 73-of-272 attempts from beyond the arc. This year, MU eclipsed that total in their 14th game. Monmouth has already knocked down 76-of-219 (34.7%) from three this season. THREE S ABOUND FOR THIBAULT Freshman guard Carly Thibault (pronounced Tee-bow) showed a penchant for knocking down three-pointers in pairs early on in her college career. The East Lyme, Conn. native hit two three s in each of her fi rst four games in a Monmouth uniform, going 8-for-20 (40%) in those games. Thibault tied her career-high with 14 points, knocking down 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, in Monmouth s home win over CCSU (01/07/10). Against Stony Brook (12/02/09), she hit 4-of-5 from downtown to establish her career high of 14 points. This season, she leads the team with 21 three-pointers (21-of-63). STATS EXTRA MONMOUTH DOUBLE-FIGURE GAMES POINTS REBOUNDS Alysha Womack - 10 Abby Martin - 2 Erin Rooney - 5 Gomez - 1 Alexis Canady - 5 Abby Martin - 4 Gabby Singer - 3 Carly Thibault - 3 Adriana Allen -2 Chanel Gomez - 2 SINGING IN THE KEYSTONE STATE Freshman guard Gabby Singer, a Harrisburg, Pa. native, has enjoyed her two best games of the season against teams from her home state. In MU s game at Penn State (12/09/09), she scored a team-high 12 points, adding a pair of three s. Then in Monmouth s win over La Salle (12/30/09) in the Hawk Holiday Classic Championship Game, Singer, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, scored a career-high 17 points in helping lead MU s comeback win. DEAR ABBY MU freshman Abby Martin had a solid start to her collegiate basketball career, logging two double-doubles in her fi rst three contests. The Maplewood, N.J. native had 11 points and 10 rebounds in her debut against Rider (11/16/09), and followed that up with a 12-point, 16-rebound performance in the Hawks fi rst win of the season against Pacifi c (11/22/09). She also tied her career-high with 12 points against a tall Boston College front line (12/05/09). She is averaging 7.2 points and a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game, which places her in a fi fth-place tie in the Northeast Conference. WOMACK ATTACK Freshman Alysha Womack currently leads the MU squad in scoring, and ranks in a 13th-place tie in the NEC, averaging 11.3 points per game. She has scored in double fi gures in 10 of 14 contests this season, including a career-high 25 against CCSU (01/07/10) She also earned Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week honors (12/24/09) and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Hampton Inn Invitational, hosted by UNC Wilmington, earlier this season. BIRDS OF A FEATHER Of the Monmouth women s basketball team s seven new freshmen this year, two have a link to the MU men s program. Two of Coach Gaitley s incoming guards, Carly Thibault and Gabby Singer, went to high schools that one current and former Monmouth men s standout attended; Thibault going to the same high school as current player Whitney Coleman, while Singer attended the same school as former NEC Player of the Year Blake Hamilton. Thibault and Coleman both played at East Lyme in Connecticut, while Singer and Hamilton both starred at Central Dauphin in Harrisburg, Pa. GETTING IT DONE WITH DEFENSE The Hawks lead the Northeast Conference in scoring defense this season, allowing 57.9 points per game, despite allowing the opposition to 42.7% of their shots, which ranks 11th in the 12-team NEC. KOMPLETE KIWI New Zealand native and Monmouth freshman Erin Rooney is off to a solid collegiate opening, starting 11 of 14 games for MU and averaging 6.1 points per game. Rooney scored exactly 10 points in each of her fi rst four games in a Monmouth uniform, and added nine points and career-high six assists in MU s win over CCSU (01/07/10).
