A Message from Hyundai Motor America A Message from the Walk Director Dear Walkers, We at Hyundai Motor America recognize the immense impact companies can make in communities when they support important causes. That is why we have made it a priority to support Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund since 1998, and we are pleased to serve as the presenting sponsor of the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk for the sixth consecutive year. We are continually inspired by the incredible teamwork of Dana-Farber s physicians, scientists, and all of its employees as they conduct innovative research, provide compassionate patient care, and work tirelessly to conquer a disease that affects so many lives. Our sincere dedication to both Dana- Farber and the Jimmy Fund is best shown through the participation of our employees, dealers, and friends on Walk day. In 2007, Hyundai and its dealers contributed $400,000 to the Institute, with our official Walk team raising more than $120,000 of that total. We are aiming to eclipse that amount in In addition to our involvement with this event, a percentage of every Hyundai vehicle sold in greater New England supports the Institute s lifesaving mission. We are also thrilled that Hyundai has been acknowledged as the first and only automobile manufacturer in the United States to exclusively focus on raising funds and awareness for cancer. Each year, we are honored to walk alongside people like you who dedicate their time and energy to such an important cause. We look forward to Sept. 21, when we come together on the Boston Marathon route to make a positive difference in the lives of cancer patients everywhere. Dear Walkers, Thank you for making a commitment to join the 2008 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai. This marks the 20 th year that Dana-Farber patients, cancer survivors, and their families, as well as thousands of people committed to the cause, have traveled together along the historic Boston Marathon route. It is the dedication and enthusiasm of walkers, like you, that will ensure the 2008 Walk s success. The more support we have in the fight against cancer, the greater our odds to beat this disease that affects so many families and friends. That is why we hope you ll spread the word about the Walk and encourage everyone you know to participate. There are many simple ways to help. Take on the role of being a Walk leader. Each effort makes a big difference. Start your own Walk team in honor of a loved one. Aim to raise $1,000 and become a Pacesetter. Your support provides Dana-Farber s physicians and scientists with the critical resources to conquer this terrible disease. Every mile you complete and every dollar you raise translates into a breakthrough in research, a new treatment or a life saved. We are continually grateful for the passion and generosity of all of our walkers. We look forward to our journey together on Sept. 21, as we take another step along the road toward finding cures. Sincerely, Ann Beach Director, Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk Sincerely, Peter C. DiPersia Eastern Region General Manager, Hyundai Motor America 2 3

Who We Are About the WALK The Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk is the largest participatory event benefiting the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This is the only event, other than the Boston Marathon itself that is sanctioned by the Boston Athletic Association to travel along the famed 26.2-mile route from Hopkinton to Boston. The money raised by the Walk supports research and care for all forms of cancer. Since 1989, the Walk has raised more than $51 million for the Jimmy Fund. In 2007, nearly 8,000 walkers raised more than $6.4 million. Our goal is to raise $7.2 million in Walkers hail from 32 states. Participants range in age from a few months to 88 years old; the average walker is 37 years old. In 2007, Pacesetters (walkers who raise $1,000 or more) contributed almost $4 million of the total funds raised. There were more than 1,500 Pacesetters in More than 700 teams walk each year. More than 600 volunteers devote their time and energy to the Walk annually. About the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber The Jimmy Fund supports the fight against cancer at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, helping to raise the chances of survival for children and adults with cancer. Since 1948, thousands of events, coupled with the generosity of millions of people, have helped the Jimmy Fund support Dana-Farber s lifesaving mission. Every year, thousands of cancer patients from around the world who have been diagnosed with cancer come to Dana-Farber for their care. Here are some of the reasons why: We focus exclusively on cancer We rank among the best in the field For eight straight years, Dana-Farber has been ranked the number one cancer hospital in New England by U.S.News & World Report s America s Best Hospitals survey. As a Harvard Medical School teaching affiliate, we recruit and staff some of the best and brightest physicians and researchers in the world. We transfer research advances into effective treatments for patients Dana-Farber s physician-scientists are intricately involved in some of the most significant breakthroughs in cancer research and care. These discoveries, such as the development of Gleevec, are made available to our patients, providing them with the latest treatment methods often months or years before they are offered to patients at other hospitals. Dana-Farber offers approximately 730 adult and pediatric therapeutic clinical trials annually in which many future treatment methods are being tested today. We treat the whole patient In addition to introducing the first research program in chemotherapy for children with cancer, Institute founder Sidney Farber, MD, pioneered the concept of comprehensive patient care in the 1950s. This model ensures that patients are seen not only by physicians and nurses, but also by social workers, nutritionists, and other caregivers. Dana-Farber s dedication to compassion resulted in the creation of the Leonard P. Zakim Center for Integrative Therapies, which has become a national leader in the field for offering patients an array of therapies, such as acupuncture and massage, as a complement to their cancer treatment. We provide unparalleled care to cancer survivors As more people survive cancer each year, Dana-Farber has blazed new trails in counseling cancer survivors about the health challenges they may face as a result of treatment. Dana-Farber is the undisputed leader in the research and care of cancer survivors, specifically addressing their long-term medical and emotional needs. Survivors of childhood cancers receive post-treatment support through the David B. Perini, Jr. Quality of Life Clinic, while adults are cared for through the Lance Armstrong Foundation Adult Survivorship Clinic. Unlike general hospitals, Dana-Farber exclusively specializes in cancer research and care. Every employee, from the office assistants to the chief of staff, is solely committed to supporting patients with all kinds of cancer including the rarest forms and to finding cures for this disease. 4 5

Fundraising Information Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is making groundbreaking discoveries every day, but we cannot make progress without your support. Going the distance on event day is only half the battle. The money you raise is absolutely vital to Dana-Farber s fight against cancer. Set your standards high and become a Pacesetter by raising $1,000 or more (see page 9 for more information). Don t forget: Your efforts make a difference in the lives of cancer patients everywhere. Seven Secrets to Fundraising Success 1) Start early. Spread the word and let everyone you know that you are walking. Don t forget to ask neighbors, colleagues, local businesses, and members of your church or synagogue community to get involved. 2) Aim high. Set your fundraising goal higher than the $250 minimum and tell your supporters you are determined to reach it (you will only be responsible for the $250 minimum). When asking people to support the Walk, suggest a minimum gift amount or provide specific gift options (e.g., $100, $50, $25). Remember: it only takes 10 gifts of $25 to reach the fundraising minimum, and only 20 gifts of $50 to become a Pacesetter. 3) Go live. When you register for the Walk, you will have access to online fundraising tools and your own personal web page. Send s to request support and thank your supporters. Take advantage of these tools to help spread the word and keep people connected. 4) Correspond creatively. Ask for support by writing your own letter or personalize one of the sample letters found on the Tools page on the Walk website. 5) Increase pledging in the workplace. Print out a pledge sheet from the Tools page on the Walk website and pass it around at work. Tip: Start the sheet with one or two large gifts. Note: Please do not submit pledge sheets with collected gifts; these are for your reference only. 6) Show your gratitude. Thank your supporters by ing or sending thank you notes. This will go a long way, especially when you approach them again next year. 7) Be creative. Meet face-to-face with potential supporters, personalize your website with photos of the person or people for whom you are walking, create a newsletter, or host a party where financial contributions are given to your Walk fundraising efforts.* For more information and ideas, or to attend a fundraising seminar, visit JimmyFundWalk.org or call 866-JF-1-WALK. * If you plan to hold a fundraising event on behalf of Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund, please contact Erica DeFreitas at erica_defreitas@dfci.harvard.edu or 800-JF-1-WALK. Training for the Walk Tips to walk like a winner By Jack Fultz 1976 Boston Marathon Winner As coach of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team, I advise our runners as they prepare to run the Boston Marathon. The only real difference between runners goals and yours is the speed with which you ll cover the distance. Your goal as a walker should be to finish the route that you choose comfortably and enjoyably. To avoid discomfort or injuries train in advance. With some practice under your belt, you ll cross the finish line feeling great, both physically and mentally. Here is some advice I give both runners and walkers: Buy a good pair of properly-fitted shoes. Avoid cotton socks they absorb moisture and lead to blisters; choose socks that keep your feet dry and comfortable. Set weekly goals or follow a training program to correspond with your Walk day distance with a little research, you ll find there are many from which to choose. Start slowly and take short walks very regularly ideally, almost every day. Make connections with potential training partners neighbors, friends, teammates and start training together. Share your goals with others! This will help you maintain a high level of motivation and enhance your fun-factor. Think of your training as play. You ll have more fun and get more out of it. If you follow these basic guidelines, you ll be surprised at how quickly you can advance both the speed and distance of a single walk. Training with others will be especially helpful on days when you need some support due to fatigue, a busy schedule, or bad weather. One of the most rewarding parts of your Walk experience will be accomplishing your daily goals, even on days when you don t really feel like training. As the Chinese proverb says, A journey of a thousand miles begins but with one step! So does the considerably shorter journey of 26.2 miles so just lace em up and take that first step. It just keeps getting easier from there

Starting or Joining a Team Walking with a team can make the miles on event day even more fun! As a team, you will share the experience and enjoy the camaraderie of having people you care for by your side. The entire event process and preparation becomes easier with a team to support you. Start a Team Choose a Team Captain who has access to the Internet Download the Team Captain Handbook on the Tools page of the Walk website Your Team Captain must register online to activate the team Choose a team name, fundraising goal, and recruitment goal (number of team members) Team captains will be notified via when someone joins their team Join a Team Each team member must register individually and select the team he or she would like to join Each team member is independently responsible for the fundraising minimum Please note that team members are not required to all walk the same route and virtual walkers may be included as part of a team If you have already registered for the Walk as an individual but would like to start or join a team, go to JimmyFundWalk.org, log in, and update your online profile, or call 866-JF-1-WALK 14 15

Make the Most of Your Team Web Page Each Team Captain will be able to create and edit a team web page. The team web page is available to all team members.
