1 Mineral Area College April 2017 Newsletter Upward Bound Trivia Night & Silent Auction To Benefit BackStoppers Success! On Saturday, March 11th, Upward Bound students, staff, alumni, and community members came together at North County High School to participate in a fundraiser for BackStoppers and an Upward Bound law enforcement scholarship. The night was a huge success. We had fifteen teams for trivia and over forty items that were auctioned. The total raised was $ We would like to give special recognition to T.J. Isgrig, St. Francois County Ambulance District EMT/paramedic, Mark Mattina, Farmington Fire Department Captain, and Ryan Miller, Farmington Police Officer who spoke to the students about careers, education and safe driving. Also, Farmington Police Department Chaplain, Kevin Kapper volunteered his time to emcee the trivia night. The night would not have been a success without everyone s help. Please take time to look at the businesses located on the insert who donated to our auction. We hope you will thank these businesses with your patronage when possible. Fundraising Update Follow the umbrella to see how close we are to reaching our goal. $0 $4,000 $8,000 $12,000 $16,000 $20,000 Our last big fundraiser will be selling Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Orders and money will be due on May 5th, with delivery on May 17th. Students or Parents will need to organize pickup of the doughnuts you sell. We are in need of parent volunteers on May 17th. 3 The Day of the ACT EAT BREAKFAST It s a proven fact that breakfast improves your concentration, mood, and memory. FOLLOW YOUR NORMAL ROUTINE If you wake up every morning and listen to music while you get ready for school, don t stop on account of the ACT! Consistency in your routine will allow you to focus on your primary objective, performing well on the test. DRESS IN LAYERS The temperature in testing center rooms has often been cited as a source of distraction for test takers. To help control the temperature, dress in layers; peel down to a t-shirt if you re warm or add a sweatshirt if you re cold. ARRIVE ON TIME Arrive no later than 7:40 a.m. Don t forget to bring all of the following: ACT Admission Ticket Acceptable Photo ID Two No. 2 pencils with good erasers (you may want to bring a hand sharpener for your pencil) Calculator We will give you a snack and bottle of water before the test. Students who arrive after 8 am will NOT be admitted to the test center! Believe in Yourself! Confidence can go a long way. Visualize yourself knowing the answers to all of the math, science, reading, and English questions. Good luck! The school year is almost over and decisions need to be made.
