1 Issue: May 2017 Charity Number: Sensory Swing and Yard Games Play times at Ridgewood have undergone an upgrade. The student council have been encouraging pleasant, productive and positive playtimes and have introduced new play equipment including a giant Snakes & Ladders game, a giant Chess set, space hoppers, skipping ropes and much more. Even more exciting, the new sensory swing has been installed and is proving a massive hit with all the students. The swing is a long waited addition to our playground and was funded by various charitable events and a kind donation to our charity Friends of Ridgewood in memory of Oliver Lee. Introducing. We would like to welcome Mr. Ian Carden to Ridgewood school in September as our new Headteacher. Mr Carden has expressed his delight and is looking forward to working at Ridgewood school with all the students and staff. Saturday 1st July 10am 2pm We are holding a Summer Fair to raise money for some new sensory equipment. Now we have our new outside swing, we are raising money for our new indoor sensory equipment and to replace some of our adapted bikes. We will have outside stalls, music, BFC in the Community, Bertie Bee, a parade, refreshments for sale and much more!! Please come along and bring your friends and family. This will be our Headteacher, Mrs Entwistle s last event as she retires at the end of the term. Let s make it the best school event ever and raise lot of money!! (If anyone would like to hold a stall on the day, please let the office know there is a 10 charge.)

2 Towneley Park As part of our English topic on A Midsummer Night s Dream 3Br went to Towneley Park for a walk in the woods. We were looking for magical creatures, but the rain must have put them off. We still had a lovely time and we did see lots of squirrels, so we ll think about magic next time. Football Along with an under 14 s football tournament and extra practices with Tom from BFC, on May 3rd, students from Ridgewood were invited to take part in a new tournament organised by the Football Association. The tournament is targeted towards 16+ year olds, giving them a chance to play and compete at an age group where opportunities are more limited. We travelled to Deepdale Stadium, home of Preston North End FC. The team were excited at the prospect of playing in the stadium, and even had a tour of the changing rooms and players lounge! Our team went on to win all their matches and brought home winner s medals and a trophy! Ridgewood s Year 11s and F.E Department are looking forward to future invitations to the tournament! Class 3E Class 3E have been learning all about Russia in geography. They have been dressing up, trying Russian food and learning a Cossack dance. Care for the Community Every Tuesday we make something for Mrs Gibbons to take to Central Methodist Church for people who are less privileged that we are. One week we made a rhubarb crumble.

3 Singing Workshop Key stage three enjoyed two amazing singing workshops this term. Emma Williams, from More Music came to teach us some new songs. She began by making lots of strange noises, which we copied. Then she taught us a song in an African language which made us all dance while we sang it. We then really enjoyed learning to sing Hall of Fame by The Script. Emma had a wonderful voice and we enjoyed listening to her sing for us. Trio Volant Trio Volant came to perform on Monday 22 nd May. They played three short concerts in the music room, so that everyone in school got a chance to watch and listen. Trio Volant is made up of a bassoon, an oboe and a clarinet. They played all sorts of music to show off the sounds of the instruments, and we especially enjoyed clapping along as they got faster and faster. This was a special concert organised by Live Music Now for our school. Music Festival A mixed group of FE students visited Pear Tree Primary School for their Summer Festival. The students and staff were looking very summery in their festival clothing. They had fun sitting around a campfire, playing festival games and taking part in music sessions. Ridgewood s Snap Election Taking inspiration from the UK s General election, pupils throughout the school are taking part in their own Snap Election. The students have been divided into three teams, they are holding campaigns, and on the 8 th June will be able to vote for the pupil with the best manifesto to become the leaders for the three teams, year groups and key stage ambassadors.

4 Helmshaw Mill In History lessons some students have been learning about Victorian life and the Industrial Revolution. To support this area of study students were able to visit a local Textile Museum. They could see the looms working and handle objects from the Victorian era. They also made their own felt. All About Class 3A Class 3A enjoyed a trip to Towneley Park as part of their English topic of creating an information text. We took lots of pictures of the things we liked, and wrote a short caption for each picture, to put in our information text. Of course we had to sample a drink and snack in the café too! 3A have also been looking at healthy food and nutrition in P.S.H.E. We turned our classroom into a healthy kitchen, put on our chef whites and explored a variety of healthy foods; we chopped, grated, whisked and even used a pestle & mortar. Watch out Jamie Oliver, 3A are coming to steal your crown. Looking Good & Feeling Great Class 4C have been learning all about the importance of personal hygiene. This included role-play, social stories and taking part in practical activities to look good and feel great. The class have been working extra hard to complete all their exams. Well done everybody in class 4C.

The gruesome plot has captured the imagination of the whole class and we have had a fantastic time recreating scenes and taking part in witch craft! We have been police officers and detectives to solve the murder of King Duncan. It was really exciting to dress up and investigate the murder scene. Once Macbeth became king we took part in a coronation, Lewis played the trumpet for the new king and then we celebrated with a huge banquet. All hail King Macbeth! Next the play took us the dark depths of black magic and witch craft, we were visited by the evil witch Hecat and she brought us a message and warned us that Macbeth will come to a terrible end. We used crystal balls to predict what would happen to Macbeth and then we worked by candle light, on the floor in the dark. We used red food colouring and black chalk to create Gothic art. Miss Woods was blown away with all the adjectives the pupils used to describe Hecat! Needless to say we have loved this topic...the more gruesome the better in 3W! Hinduism 5T has been learning about Hinduism for R.E. The talked about Hindu festivals and celebrations. The Holi festival is the festival for Spring, celebrating new life and new beginnings. It is also called The Festival of Colour. They recreated the Holi festival by wearing white t-shirts and using paints and paintbrushes and painted each other with lots of different bright colours. Celebrations As part of our Transition Challenge lessons we have been learning about weddings in different cultures. 4F planned and made all the resources needed for a wedding reception. We all had a great time!
