PERANBIN PRESS The Newsletter of Peranbin Primary College We are four campuses working together: Baddaginnie/Swanpool, Strathbogie & Violet Town Principal: Angela Holleran FRIDAY 24 th August 2018 Principal s Report In the Classroom for Book Week Books continue to be the best way for children to learn how to read, despite the modern focus on digital learning and technologies. One of my favourite books is titled It s a book by Lane Smith. In this book the main character points out that it can never run out of battery! It has been just a delight this week to see everyone dressing up as their favourite book characters. I confess to owning a number of outfits, which I have dragged out of a moving box to wear. Ask your children which outfit I wore at their campus and check out the photos! CONTACT US School Mobile: Violet Town Campus Strathbogie Campus Baddaginnie Campus Swanpool Campus peranbin.pc@edumail.vic.gov.au In the Staffroom As part of our commitment to improving student outcomes, our teacher team works as a Professional Learning Community or PLC. We meet face to face each Tuesday afternoon to focus on teaching and learning. Each Thursday we have a virtual PLC meeting to focus on other issues such as student engagement and wellbeing, policy work and school improvement. These meetings do change at times to accommodate other events that arise. Events across the College All of us are getting ready for the Athletics Sports on Tuesday 4 th September up at Strathbogie Rec Reserve. Ms Weeks has been training our future Olympians in her PE lessons and all will be able to put on a good show. I d like to add a note about the canteen after some confusion about whose turn it is I have learned that this year it is Violet Town campus! Robyn Thornhill has offered to make these arrangements and if you are able to donate your time or food items on the day please let us know. Enjoy your weekend! DATES TO REMEMBER DATE Tuesday 4 th Sept Wed 5 th Sept EVENT Peranbin Athletics Sports / Strathbogie School Council at Baddaginnie 6.30pm Angela

To kick things off on Monday, Ms Hand read Migaloo, The White Whale by Mark Wilson who also illustrated with sketches and painting as part of Best Illustrations. On Tuesday, Smallest Book, Mrs Green shared her reading experiences from a child through to today and read Blossom Possum by Gina M Newton (full of great rhyme). Princess shared Little Red Riding Hood on Wednesday and Miss Fitz chose Margaret Wild s, Big Red Hen and the Little Lost Egg yesterday. Miss Fitz won the smallest book, closely followed by Cailin and Riley, while the physically oldest book (98 years) was one that had belonged to Max s great, great-grandmother. Ms Hand had the oldest story, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (1813 publication). Best illustrations and Most interesting couldn t be judged as there were too many opinions to count! Special mention on Wednesday to Princess Robbie (Little Red Riding Hood) and Miss Holleran (Big Bad Wolf) who acted out their characters on more than one occasion, much to the delight of us all. Quiz winners will be announced in next week s newsletter (due to publishing time limits).
STRATHBOGIE NEWS Strathbogie Campus, Main St, Strathbogie 3666 Ph Campus Manager: Amy Foy Week 6 has been all about Athletics and Book Week! We have been very lucky to have had Ms Conroy with us for most of this week and Coach Conroy has worked hard to help our students hone their athletic abilities. We have been practicing hard both at lunchtimes and during some classtime so out students can develop the confidence and comfort needed to be able to give the Athletics competition their best shot. Remember our Athletics carnival is on Tuesday 4 th September and you are all welcome to come along. A note went home earlier this week asking for helpers and we would love it if you could be there no athletics experience necessary! Our Book Costume day, in honour of Book Week, was fantastic this morning with some surprises on the Dress Up front. Well done to everyone for their imaginative and creative costumes. Thank you to Angus and Bridget s dad, Brendon, and to Beryl s Grandma, Kath, who took the time to share their love of literature with us and read stories to us. We have a new maths genius in our midst. Ariel this week made a huge connection with her work on fractions and decimals, figuring out that 0.3 was the same as 0.30 well before any of her peers. While other students checked their progress against others, Ariel quietly worked away by herself and produced the correct result! Very exciting! Remember our Student led conferences will be held in Week 9, on Wednesday 12 th September and Thursday 13 th September from 3.45pm onwards. Book sheets will be sent home next week. Have a safe and wonderful weekend Amy, Monique, Suzie and Barb.

Junior Fox News - written by all the kids in Junior Fox Yesterday we had the annual Book Week Parade. It was fun and the Kinder kids joined in with us. Everyone dressed up in book character costumes, even the teachers. The theme of this year s Book Week was Find Your Treasure. We are making our very own treasure maps and finding treasures in the playground with our maps. In Maths we learned how to play Greedy Pig. We needed to make the biggest number we could with 2 or 3 dice. We learned to put the biggest digit in the hundreds column. It was a fun way to learn about place value. In our Social and Emotional learning we made colourful bugs. We wrote 3 things we could do when someone was bugging us. We put our bugs up in the room so we can remind ourselves what to do. In P.E we learned a game called Giant s Treasure. We had to grab the treasure and run back to the start. Art We made colourful dream catchers out of wool and paper plates.
Health and PE: Week 6 Physical Education. Athletics Training Athletics training this week involved jumping, jumping and some more jumping. One of the most difficult jumps to get your head around is the Triple Jump. We have done it slow-mo, walking pace, jogging, flat out, with partners, by ourselves, visualised it, talked it through, drawn it, labelled the phases, watched athletes on YouTube and have also got some tips from professional athletes and ex Olympians. Phew, its hard work trying to get this triple jump business right and just when they think, Yes! I ve got it! the next jump has reverted back to step, step, jump. Oops, that right, its HOP, STEP, JUMP! Have a go at home, try it with your kids, practice every day and try to get the sequence correct. If you see your kids doing a sneaky little Hop, Step, Jump up the hallway or across the lounge, sorry. I know that these PPC kids are strong, they are tough and they don t give up, so keep trying hard, the perseverance will pay off in the end (fingers crossed). The other events are all equally as important as the triple jump, so of course we have also had a red hot go at the sprints, hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put/softball and discus/vortex. It s wonderful to see the kids improve their personal best and watch their technique change with more practice as they grow in confidence. Great job everyone! Permission notes would have gone home by now along with notes to find out how the kids plan to get to and from the sports. Included as well, was another note seeking assistance with the sports on the day. If you can possibly help out on the day, please return the form or feel free to contact me directly on Everyone wants to see their kids compete (me included) and basically the more helpers we get on the day the more we can rotate the helpers so that frees you up to go around with your own kids too. Your kids love to have you come along to support and cheer them on, they also love it when you become involved and contribute to their awesome sports day. Thank you in advance and I will send out the schedule attached to next week s newsletter. Athletics Schedule. This year the athletics will have the kids flat out through the rotations of the various events. The day will start at 9.45am with the 800m distance race for the 9-13 year old age groups that wish to take part and followed directly with the commencement of all the age group rotations. The 6 and under age group will have their introduction to the sports environment and will receive star stickers on their performance cards after each event and a participation ribbon at the end of the day. The 7-13 year old age groups will be awarded with 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd ribbons for each event. It is expected that all students will participate to the best of their ability in all events, where the only exception will be the 2 distance events of 800m and 400m. The 400m race will be run at the start of our lunch break for those students wanting to run in this distance. After all the rotations through the events, overall age group champions for both boys and girls will be announced and the age champion for each age group 7-13 years boys and girls will be presented with a championship medal. Runners, runners, runners.. please send your kids in runners leading up the Athletics sports and on their PE days, I am still seeing gumboots! Thanks again, looking forward to your support. PE Days are as follows: Strathbogie Tuesdays Violet Town Wednesdays Swanpool- Baddaginnie Thursdays Lynda Weeks Health and PE Teacher
