6 February NEWS On March 21, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous I Have a Dream speech where he expressed his deep desire for all men and women to be treated with equality and respect. Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday in January. My point to this opening is to express that dreams ignite infinite possibilities. History has demonstrated time and time again the transformational magnitude of a simple dream. It seems as though each school year more and more state and federal mandates are placed upon school districts. Unfortunately, this causes educators to become so wrapped up in a timeframe of delivering content that we forget to talk to students about what is important to them. What are their hopes and dreams for their futures? Dreams become realities for all sorts of reasons: positivity, grit, self-discipline, and resilience may be among those reasons. However, I m certain that teachers also play an important part in helping students achieve the reality of their dreams. I know it was my science teacher and high school basketball coach who fueled the momentum inside me to help transform my dreams into realities. I recently sent out a quote to the staff that said, There are two types of education: one that gets you an A, the other that gets you a life. I truly believe that teachers teach both! Part of that life education involves motivating and inspiring the dreams of each and every student. It means giving the students the time to express their dreams while helping them find the means in which to pursue them. This is my desire for the students of EM. Mrs. Kroll
7 VIEW FROM THE FRONT OFFICE In just a few months, the Class of 2018 will be considered alumni and possibly attending their first alumni banquet. That may seem so far away, but now that we are on the other side of the CRC basketball tournament, the rest of the year flies by! I addressed this very concept in a meeting this past week and was told to, HUSH THY MOUTH! as stated by a couple of senior moms. Having been in that very position exactly a year ago, these last few months before graduation go by WAY to quickly. Actually, it seems as if the last 25 years were just a blur. Or, maybe that is because my old eyes are starting to feel their age. I m still not ready to embrace my oldness. J When I was teaching, my health class students were required to set goals for the year, goals they wanted to accomplish by the time they finished high school, and goals after college. Granted, setting goals for life after college for a 15 year old is a stretch (heck, it s a stretch for a senior in college), but it made the students think about what they wanted out of life, to give them a sense of direction. Are we providing a good example and setting goals ourselves? Are we taking the time to make a plan for our future, whether it is short-term or long-term? Even after almost ten years at E-M and coming up on 26 years in education, I have noticed that I still need to do a MUCH better job of setting goals and objectives, both personally and professionally. What exactly is a goal, an objective, an action plan? Goals are simply the final product, what you want to achieve. Objectives are the steps one will take to reach a goal while an action plan is the overall plan of the goals and the steps to reach the goals (objectives). Without setting goals and objectives, do we have a clear direction of what we want to achieve, where we want to go? In high school sports, everyone wants to make it to the state tournament (a goal), but what are we going to do to get there (objectives). This is a simple example, but can a team or person
8 make it to the state tournament without having an action plan of what they need to do to get there? Will getting to state just happen? It only makes sense to set goals and objectives, both personally and professionally. Without direction, we are a feather in the wind, moved by the action of another, not ourselves. Without a plan, we are lost. The key is to set SMART goals. The SMART acronym has slightly different variations for some, but overall, goals should be: S specific, significant M measurable, motivational and meaningful A attainable, achievable, action-orientated R realistic, reasonable, and relevant T tangible, trackable, time-based By sticking to this blueprint (road map) when setting goals, this will help keep us on that path to reaching greatness. SMART goals are, in simple terms, the smart thing to do! What direction are we heading - as individuals, as a school, and even as a community? Are we flying by the seat of our pants, at the whims of others? Or are we going to take control, set goals and objectives, develop an action plan and have a clear vision of the future. I challenge everyone to take charge, set some goals and objectives, and make an action plan. Get that internal compass headed in the right direction and make that action plan. Make sure to celebrate the successes along the way. A large part of success (and achieving those goals) is a state of mind and celebrating is a way to cultivate that mindset. Food for thought: In absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia. Unknown, (
