1 PARKWAY SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL Volume 31 Issue Hanna Road Manchester, MO November 2006 Dear South High Community: It is a wonderful feeling to know we passed Proposition R. Thank you for investing in the future of our children and the schools in our community. Your support and generosity will provide us the necessary revenues to renew and refresh the structure of our school system. This past weekend I was with several South High parents and we discussed the feeling of relief that the additional money will provide to our school budget and class sizes. The more we talked, the more I realized how important this victory was to the entire Parkway community. I am most energized by the knowledge that 59% of the voters said yes to us. It seems to me this is a strong, powerful statement to South s faculty and staff that you value our work preparing your children for their years after high school. After the Thanksgiving break, we will begin to develop the budget for next year. We will retain all the lessons we learned on how to stretch a dollar, and I know we will take great pride in exploring ways to make the additional money go even farther to satisfy more needs. The beginning of November marks the end of our fall athletic season and the beginning of our winter athletic and fine arts performance seasons. Recently I had the chance to listen to our outstanding vocal music students, and two days later watch the jazz group perform their concert. The month of December provides opportunities to see our band concert, the fall drama production Noises Off and one additional concert from our vocal group. This is the time of year that provides you a chance to appreciate the many different kinds of talents our students possess. May I suggest you bring your family to school and share the richness of a South High performance this season. It will be an inexpensive evening rich in the magic of magnificent holiday music -- the stuff of memories, to be sure. Time together is the greatest gift we can give our loved ones at the holidays. Please remember the thousands of troops overseas that are spending their holidays away from their family and friends. I am thankful for their personal sacrifices to protect us and support our country. Hopefully we can all find a way to support them, too. Gary S. Mazzola Principal Patrice A. Aitch Ronald D. Banfield, Ed.D. Paula A. Hopkins Barbara G. Moore Stephen M. Oldenburg Sarah C. Yancey Assistant Principals Phone: Fax: Once again my parents are returning home from Arizona and hopefully they will bring some of their warm weather with them. The older I get the less enthusiastic I am about a white Christmas; I suppose that puts me another level higher on the age-o-meter of life. I m also looking forward to our son Mike returning from college. It will be great to have the complete family home again, even if it is just for a couple of weeks. Who wouldn t want to have both of his sons at home making the most of their opportunities to poke fun at their dad? They take great pride in ganging up on me and I can t even write them a detention! All humor aside, I hope you find time to share your blessings with your family and friends. I certainly feel that this is a special year to be thankful in Parkway. Thanks again to the South community for reinvesting in us. Have a wonderful holiday season and I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events. With Patriot Pride, Gary Mazzola Principal

After a year, they should contact the Parkway Student Development Office at POINTERS FOR PARENTS Parents, here are some ideas to help you support your child s learning Ways to Motivate Your Child to Learn Emphasize positive attitudes and values honesty, fairness, respect for teachers, respect for the rights of others. Be sure that you set a good example by demonstrating these values Have regular talk sessions where family members share their interests, problems, and activities. Listen to your teen s questions and ideas. Show respect for her thoughts and feelings. Organize household schedules and responsibilities. Everyone should have at least one regular chore to finish on time. Take time every day right after school, at supper and before bedtime to talk with your child about school. Support your child s interest. If he likes music, encourage him to take a music class, or go to the library and borrow a book on the subject. Talk with your child about the future. Help her understand that schoolwork is preparation for her future. Subscribe to newspapers and magazines to stimulate interest in the outside world instead of the focus just being on your teen s world Help your child develop a personal library. Give books as presents. Take pride in your child s report cards and work. Keep a portfolio of essays for example so that you and your child can enjoy seeing how she has progressed Ways to Communicate and Cooperate with Your School Join the PTO and PALS group Get acquainted with the school principal and your child s teachers early in the school year Take part in school activities regularly. Show your interest and support by attending PTO and PALS meetings, parent-teacher conferences, school plays, sports events, college planning events, etc. Volunteer to help with fund-raising events and other special activities at school. Call or teachers or school officials if you have questions about assignments, grades, or school policies. It s better to ask questions than to be in the dark. Be sure to notify school within 24 hours when your child is absent. Teachers can view absences as excused or unexcused. Make arrangements to pick up homework from school during long absences. Don t wait until 12 th grade to start thinking about planning for after high school. Attend PALS meeting to meet with counselors and Counseling Programs planned for Parents. The above suggestions were developed by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Missouri PTA Association. South High Counselors personalized these ideas. 8

The team is coached by Paul & Vicki Poecker. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Congratulations to the girls varsity volleyball team who recently wrapped up a successful season finishing The ladies lost to St. Joseph s Academy, 2-time Missouri State runner-up and a nationally ranked team, in the second round of district play. The Patriots almost knocked off the #1 seed after rebounding from a game one loss by winning game two 22-25, and losing game three The Patriots improved upon last year s 7th place finish in the Suburban West Conference to third behind Lafayette and Lindbergh. For five weeks the team was ranked in the top 10, or on the bubble, for large schools in the area. Seniors Melissa Collins, outside hitter who has verbally committed to play volleyball on a full scholarship at Bradley University, and Katie Povis, outside hitter, were both named to the first team All-Conference. Sophomores Jenny Costello, setter, and Becca Vieker, middle hitter, were named to the second team All- Conference. If your son or daughter is interested in playing volleyball please contact Carrie Steele via , csteele@pkwy.k12.mo.us, or by phone BOYS BASKETBALL The basketball season is approaching quickly and preparations are already under way for another successful season. The varsity team had a busy off season competing at the University of Illinois and Meramec Community College team camps. Some player standouts were senior Julian Gilliam, junior Phil Atkins, and sophomore Ben Hoener. The fall season is already under way and the boys had a big victory over a team that had some of the areas best individual talent. Last year the varsity team finished the season with a record of 15-12, both the sophomore and freshman teams set school records for most wins in a season. *GIRLS LACROSSE 2007 Are you interested in joining the Lacrosse club team or just need more information?
