As you read through our newsletter, you will be exposed to a taste of the life here at WCS. We hope you enjoy it and if you have any questions or comments, please contact our main office. ( ) We would also like to take this moment to welcome our The main focus of our School Improvement Plan is to increase the number of students who successfully graduate from WCS in three years. This means that we expect students to achieve their very best in all classes. WCS has very passionate teachers who spend an enormous amount of time and energy setting students up for success, but it is ex- ship, or the arts. Finally, a comment on construction We are now in our fifth year of construction and we are beginning to see some progress. We are now utilizing some of the new spaces which include the Library, Cugnet Centre, The Colleen Weimer Hall, and CHEERLEADING, JR GIRLS VB, SR BOYS VB 8 FOOTBALL 9 new students and families to our school. We are sure you will find our school community both inviting and tremely important that parents and students know that ultimately, the students must accept responsibility the new Band and Choir rooms, just to name a few. Our fall activities are in full swing and you may have heard, we have experienced great success. This success is due to the many hours that our coaches and advisors have spent working with our students. 2 WCS FALL NEWSLETTER Page 2 EDUCATION WEEK The silent lunch auction is taking place the week of October th, as well as the nickel wars, with proceeds going toward the Communithon. A Be Kind Day is also taking place on Wednesday October 22 nd. We also have our 3-way conferences taking place on Wed/Thurs, October 22nd and 23rd. Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. - Nelson Mandela COSMOTOLOGY LAB The Cosmetology Classes are absolutely pleased to be in our new space! It is a gorgeous room, a huge improvement! We are definitely going to enjoy all of the space to work in! It is filled with cabinets, drawers, and other storage! It is a must see for the next time you are in the WCS! INTERIOR DESIGN The Interior Design students have finished their building sculptures, which are on display outside of the Artroom!! 3 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 Page 3 FIP s New Room! The FIP class has been moved in to their new classroom since January 2014 and loving it! The light yellow walls, low lighting and tall windows for natural light all contribute to the zen feeling in the classroom. We try to have as little visual distraction for the students as possible so as to not distract them from their work. Working on academics Selmer Nergard and Shane Tegart preparing snack In our program the students work on multiple life skills needed to live as independently as possible, including cooking, general cleaning skills, and laundry. Our new room has a wonderful spacious kitchen where the students prepare morning snack and daily meals. Our bathroom facility is equipped with laundry, a walk in tub, a sensory shower, and a wheelchair lift. The bathroom also has an entryway from the hallway, making it accessible to students outside of our class who require its use. It is great to have access to such wonderful facilities! 4 NEWSLETTER TITLE Page 4 CHRISTIAN ETHICS Christian Ethics 10 and 30 are pleased to welcome the NET (National Evangelization Team) Canada members to our class throughout semester one. The team of seven young adults who have been sponsored by St. Vincent de Paul parish are going to be living in the community of Weyburn for approximately 7 months this year. They will be creating many opportunities for all students to get together. Planned events include sports nights, retreats, high school youth group and small group meetings. The NET leaders will visit the classroom regularly to share their stories, participate in the course of study and learn more from the students about events and activities in Weyburn. What is important is family, friends, giving back to your community and finding meaning in life. - Adrian Grenier Brittany Kot, Jeena Johner and Kailee Bell welcome NET member Joey to the Christian Ethics 10 class. ENTREPRENEURSHIP The Entrepreneurship 30 class of WCS has been busy with the start-up of another Junior Achievers company. This semester, the class has chosen to create unique projects by recycling wooden pallets and barn wood to lessen our carbon footprint. We are just in the process of creating some awesome prototypes, and we can custom make, too. Some of the ideas for our new company include fire pit chairs, shelves, and unique custom signs. Stay tuned for more details as we create our Business Plan which will include information regarding our Business Name, Sale/ Marketing & Production information and prices. In the early morning of October 8 th, the Astronomy Club members met to observe final full lunar eclipse of The next two full lunar eclipses viewable from our location won t be until September 2015 and not again until 2017, so it was a worthwhile event!! solar eclipse will be visible from our location. But remember it is NEVER wise to look directly at the sun at any time, but even more so during an eclipse. Special eyewear is needed to view a solar eclipse. A limited supply of eclipse glasses can be purchased from Ms. Kennedy-Allin for $2.00 prior to the day of the eclipse. The Club meets every second Friday after school to discuss the sky events for the coming week, life beyond our own planet, and the occasional Astrophysics topic. Gravity, black holes, and dark matter are topics that challenge conventional thought. Did you know that at this very moment there is more evidence that the earth is accelerating up, rather than gravity pulling us down? Astronomy compels the soul to look upwards and leads us from this world to another. - Plato On October 23 rd a partial WEYBURN TRAVEL CLUB Once again the Weyburn Travel Club will be offering an international tour for the 2015/2016 school year. This tour would be open to all current grade 9, 10 and 11 students that will be attending WCS during the travelling year. The trip will be a 10 day tour of LONDON, PARIS, FLORENCE and ROME over the Easter break. 7 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 Page 7 S.T.A.R.S. SHOW CHOIR The S.T.A.R.S. Choir is off to a great start. There are 38 grade 11 and 12 students in the group this year and they are all musically talented and extremely enthusiastic! Rehearsals are every Monday evening, and a lot of Sunday evenings as well. The first performance for this group was at the official grand opening of the Cugnet Center. After performing a small portion of the Hallelujah Chorus as the donor plaque was unveiled, STARS entertained invited guests and visitors to a 30 minute set of songs. The group s next performance will be at Communithon! They will be kicking off this year s event during opening ceremonies as they perform the theme song Let s Get Together. Later that evening, they will again take to the stage for their performance time slot. The year is off to a great start and the group looks forward to a fun, musical year together. WCS OPEN MIC NIGHT This year we will be hosting some Open Mic Nights at our school. This is an evening that will give anyone and everyone an opportunity to showcase and share their musical talents. Everyone from WCS and from the community are welcome to attend-- as an audience member or as a participant. Come listen to our house band and if and when you want to come up on stage, just submit your name and wait for your turn to take over the mic. Singers, guitarists, keyboard players, wind players-- --everyone is welcome to take part. Also, our SRC will be serving coffee house beverages such as Mocha and Cappuccino! Our first Open Mic Night was Wednesday, October 15 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in Colleen Weimer Hall. Keep your ears open for the next one! Where words fail, music speaks. - Hans Christian Andersen COMMUNITHON Many groups and individuals will be performing at this year s Weyburn and District United Way Communithon on October Look forward to seeing acts from our Grade 12 Choir, Jazz Band, Grade 11 Choir, S.T.A.R.S. Show Choir, Concert Band and Grade 10 Choir! Also, watch for Haley Anderson, Brooklyn Arts, Natalie Martin, and Logan Mainil as they take on their roles as this year s Communithon Super Heroes! Should be a great weekend!

8 NEWSLETTER TITLE Page 8 SENIOR BOYS VOLLEYBALL This year the Weyburn Eagles have quite the season ahead of them. Last year, the Eagles advanced to 5A provincials for the first time in years, and this season we are aiming to do the same. The squad is being led by three grade 12 s: Tanner Quintyn, James Giroux, and Mitch Hoffman. The grade 11 s involved this year for their first or second year are: Bryden Rumpel, Jorden Zazula, Jaedon Miller, Brian Erbach, and Braydon Hoffman. Our grade 10 s include: Rylie Mainil, Spencer Anderson, and Levi Woodard. So far this season our highlights have been placing 2 nd in our home tournament, beating Campbell in the quarter finals in Lumsden (earning us 4 th place in the tournament), and placing 5 th out of 20 teams at the U of R tournament. Our next opponents will see us at the following tournaments: Regina Winston Knoll, Regina Campbell, Moose Jaw Peacock, Yorkton, Estevan, South Regionals in Swift Current, and 5A Provincials in Saskatoon. Our team has a lot of talent, and even more potential! We are excited to show off our skills and earn a spot to provincials again where we hope to make playoffs! JUNIOR GIRLS VOLLEYBALL The 2014 Junior Girls Volleyball team started their season attending tournaments in Arcola, Weyburn and Fillmore. The girls also hosted their own tournament on October 17 th and 18 th. With the majority of the girls being new to the team this year, the team has worked a lot on skill development and learning a new rotation. This year, the girls have also welcomed an exchange student from Belgium to the team. It has been a lot of fun for them to learn some new words and differences between our school system and the one in Belgium. The girls will wrap up their season with tournaments in Moosomin and Midale. It has been a great season and the coaches look forward to the remainder of the tournaments. Sports do not build character. They reveal it. - Haywood Broun CHEERLEADING The WCS Cheer Team has been working hard since the beginning of September under the direction of coach Mrs. Kyla Moffatt. Joining Mrs. Moffatt to assist the team this year are Emma Hulbert and Alexis Pederson, both of whom were members of the squad during their three years at WCS. The Cheer Team has enjoyed cheering for our Eagles football team this fall, and we have also been working on learning and perfecting our stunt technique. The Competition Squad will be finalized by the end of October. We plan to attend at least three competitions this year, including Provincial Championships in Moose Jaw. Thanks for your support of the WCS Cheer Team!

9 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 Page 9 EAGLES FOOTBALL The Eagles Football team entered the 2014 season with a lot of question marks. The team had lost a great deal of grade 12 talent and leadership from last year s very successful squad and were looking to a lot of young and inexperienced players to step up and play a big role this season. The Eagles started the season with a controlled scrimmage against the Greenall Griffins in Balgonie where the coaches got to see what kind of squad we would have for this year. The Eagles took a lot of promise into their 1 st game but lost in Swift Current We then travelled to Estevan where we were able to come out with our first win of the season, The Eagles moved to 2 and 1 on the season with a hard fought victory over Central in our 1 st home game. We then took on a big and very good Yorkton team and lost The Eagles then travelled to Moose Jaw and defeated Vanier in a comefrom-behind victory that was truly entertaining for the fans. We then took on the defending 3A Provincial Champs from Moose Jaw Peacock and lost The Eagles finished the regular season with a 3-3 record and finished 4 th overall in the Moose Jaw League. We will take on Moose Jaw Vanier in a home playoff game on Oct. 18 th.
