The FluMist is still unavailable to the school system. At this time if you want your child to get vaccinated for the flu in a timely manner, then please go to your pediatrician or a local pharmacy. If you get your child vaccinated outside of school and already sent your consent to school, please contact the health room by calling or ing Siobhan_Zarek@hcpss.org and letting us know so that your child is not vaccinated twice. If a definite date for rescheduling the clinic is provided, we will let you know as soon as possible. The Health CLES, is asking that parents keep a "weather appropriate" change of clothes in their child's backpack for any event, as you feel appropriate. If you feel your child would benefit from a change of clothes, please place one outfit into a gallon- sized ziploc and keep it at the bottom of their backpack. Every student has the potential for spills, falls, or injury resulting in messy clothes and might benefit from keeping a change of clothes at school.

2 From the Reading Specialist- The prizes for the Summer Reading Challenge have been ordered and will be here shortly. It is a customized prize and so it takes a little longer than pre- printed products. I apologize for the delay and appreciate your patience. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Halloween Festivities- That exciting time of year is upon us again. The air is crisp, the leaves are falling, and the magic of Halloween is already in the air! Weather permitting; we will have our Halloween parade and parties on Friday, October 30, at 9:10 A.M. With Friday being a half- day, we are asking students to wear their costumes to school. To ensure that this event is one of harmless make- believe and fun, we ask for your help to ensure the enjoyment and safety of all who participate. Here are a few reminders. Please purchase or create a costume that is easy to wear without dangling strings or loose pieces. Toy weapons and masks are not allowed in school as part of a costume. We appreciate adults adhering to this as well to ensure we are safely able to recognize all attendees. Please choose costumes that are interesting and creative in nature. Costumes are not to depict violence or excessively frightening characters. Latex balloons or costumes are not allowed due to allergies. Parking will be a challenge. Please be patient and careful. PARADE: Based on feedback, we are extending the time outside for our Halloween Parade. The format of the parade is provided below: Parade Route- Our students will come onto the field by approximately 9:10 - called by grade level. The order of the arrival on the field will be as follows: 5th, 4th, 3rd, 1st, 2nd and then Kindergarten. Then students will do one loop around the 'viewing' area. This is a great picture opportunity. All guests can stand in the center of the loop or on either end of the field. Please do not stand in the 'loop' in order to ensure a clear path for our students. We will mark off the loop to help make it stand out. After one loop, the students will then return to their original locations in order to see the next grade level. Once all students have had an opportunity to go around the loop, students and staff will then return into the building through the gym doors. All parties for the shortened day will be student only. Alternative Halloween Activity- For students who do not participate and/or celebrate Halloween, there will be alternative activities for them to do during the festivities. Non- participants will be able to utilize computer games, board games, drawing, and time to read their favorite books. If you would like you child to participate in the alternative activity and not take part in the Halloween activities please fill out the form at the end of the newsletter and return to school by October 28 th. Picture Make Up and Retakes- Any student who was absent or who is new the Centennial Lane will have their pictures taken for the yearbook on November 3 rd. If you started at CLES after September 18 th or were absent on that date, picture envelopes will be sent home with your student on Friday, October 30 th. Only new students or students who were absent on picture day may purchase a picture package. You may have your portraits retaken for any reason. In order to have your pictures retaken you are required to return the ENTIRE portrait package you purchased to the photographer on re- take day. Your child will not have their picture retaken if they do not have their complete portraits package

3 American Education Week will be held the week of November 16 th. Parents are welcome to visit any day of the week. To accommodate the parking needs and student activities, we have suggested the following days as designated visitation days for the teams. Monday, November 17- Grade 1 Tuesday, November 18- Grades 4 & 5 Wednesday, November 19- Kindergarten & Grade 3 Friday, November 20 th - Grade 2 More information will be sent out closer to the dates. Please sign in and out in the front lobby and wear a visitor s badge at all times while visiting CLES. There will be Notes for the Teacher available if you would like to share with your child s teacher something you enjoyed during your visit. PTA News Reflections Program- Last week, the PTA was in the cafeteria during lunch to talk to your children about the National Arts Recognition and Achievement Program sponsored by the CLES PTA. Below is a list of the six categories in which the children can enter along with a brief description. Deadline for submission is November 13th. Dance Choreography: Submit a less than 5- minute original dance choreographed by your child. It could be ballet, contemporary, ethnic and folk, hip- hop, jazz, or tap. Literature: Submit a less than 2,000 words original prose, poetry, drama (screen play and play script), reflective essay, narrative or short story. Film Production: Submit a less than 5- minute original video (animation, narrative, documentary, experimental, or multimedia). Music Composition: Submit a less than 5- minute original a cappella, blues, choral, country, electronic, hip hop, jazz, world music, musical, orchestral, pop, R&B, religious, rock, symphonic/concert band or traditional recording. Photography: Submit an original single photo, panoramic, photomontage (one seamless print of multiple original photos), a multiple exposure, negative sandwich or photogram. Visual Arts: Submit any of these forms of original work: architecture (2D/3D), carpentry, ceramics, collages, photographic collages (multiple photos cut/pasted), computer- generated images, crafts, designs, dioramas, drawings, fiber work, jewelry, kites, metal etching punch work, mobiles, painting, printmaking, sculpture and wind chimes. Many of your children had wonderful questions. Here are the answers to a few: - Students are permitted to work in groups. If your child chooses to participate as part of a group, only one child should fill out the entry form. - All work must be original. Submissions cannot be taken off of YouTube or from any other source. - Work can be submitted on a flash drive/thumb drive or CD/DVD. - Winners chosen from CLES will go onto the Howard County level, those winners go to the state level and those winners go to the national level. - All national winners have their work displayed in Washington D.C. and win cash prizes. - All who enter will be recognized with a small assembly in January (parents invited) and will be presented with a certificate. CLES level winners will win a medal as well. Community News
