1 Strasburg-Franklin Local Schools Tiger Pride Newsletter Spring 2013 Upcoming Events March Spring Break April 9 April May 1-3 May 3 May 5 Elementary Spring Pictures OAA Week 8th grade trip to Washington D.C. Golden Memories Jr./Sr. High Band Concert May 8 Class of 2013 Top Ten Banquet May 11 Tiger Foundation Golf Outing Dear Tiger Community: March 2013 Spring is already here and before you know it, the end of school will have arrived. In these changing times in education and school finance, public education is at the focus of many critical issues in the state of Ohio. A new school funding system is proposed that affects school districts abilities to deliver service to all students. With new Common Core Standards coming into place, students are asked to perform at higher levels and integrate critical thinking and relationship-building skills so that they are prepared for the 21 st Century. Traditional models of education are being changed and students are being asked to be the seekers of knowledge while teachers are the conductors and facilitators to meet student needs. Students will be asked to perform at higher levels and achieve greater accomplishments than ever before in the state educational model. With this being said, our staff is committed to provide quality educational opportunities for our students to achieve at their highest levels. Also, with the close of school coming, this is a very important time for schools to evaluate and judge the progress of your student. We are hot and heavy into the state testing windows and school officials cannot stress enough the importance of your student s attendance on a daily basis. Further, support your student through this tough time as they may have anxiety or stress over these high stakes tests. If you comfort them and work with them to handle the pressures of this situation, this is a great tool for them to be successful in the future. Remind your student that this is a one-time snapshot of what they have learned and is by no means a complete picture of your son or daughter s successes and failures. We will work with each student so his or her ability is maximized in whatever endeavor they so choose to pursue. Tests are a fact of life in today s educational world, but are not the complete picture of one s own individual accomplishments. The goal is to prepare your student for future success in all areas and this is a portion of this preparation. Finally, spring sports are coming upon quickly. Sooner or later this crazy weather will break and our student-athletes will be competing on our baseball and softball diamonds and running on our all-weather track. Please take some time to get out and support our kids at these events. The community of Strasburg has always supported our kids in the athletic realm and they enjoy seeing you at the events. May 18 May 26 Jr./Sr. Prom Graduation Again, thank you for all that you do for your kids and community to make this a successful place. I look forward to seeing you at the various activities and events this spring. Yours in education, Curtis M. Clough Superintendent

2 Students Of The Month Strasburg Junior/Senior High School recognizes two students whose dedication to the school, the community, and their personal goals exceeds expectations. One student from both the Junior High and High School will receive recognition for an exceptional attitude of self-sacrifice, positivity, and hard work. A student who goes above and beyond in these areas exemplifies TIGER PRIDE and is an inspiration to faculty and fellow students. Students recognized for the award are chosen based on the Five A's: Attitude, Ambition, Activities, Academics, and Attendance. Please check out the display case in front of the library to find out more about March students of the month. Seth Crilley Sophomore Seth Crilley is the high school Student of the Month for March. The son of Ron and Joanne Crilley of Strasburg, Seth is actively involved in his church. He is a member of the ALT youth group and the church baseball league, helps to raise money for Sheaves for Christ, which helps orphanages and missionaries, works at his church Sunday School Camp, and serves as a mentor in a mentorship program. Seth is also a song leader for his church youth group and plays guitar in the church orchestra. Outside of the church, Seth works a summer job of mowing and painting. After graduation, Seth plans to attend a Bible college or become a wildlife officer. Seth is dedicated, hard-working, and humble in the classroom. In addition to leading a Bible study with his peers, he often shows a willingness to help other students succeed in their schoolwork, and he does so with patience. Seth s endeavors in philanthropy and his commitment to achievement in and out of school make him an ideal candidate for this honor. He embodies a high level of excellence in each of the five A s, which are found in all Students of the Month: Attitude, Attendance, Ambition, Academics, and Activities. Congratulations to Seth on being Student of the Month. Katie Carrick was chosen as the middle school Student of the Month for March. She is the daughter of James and Sonni Carrick. Katie is very involved with a number of extracurricular activities. As a member of the Power of the Pen team she took third place at the district tournament. She is also a member of the softball and basketball teams. Katie is a member of the Strasburg Band. Along with Katie s accomplishments in her extracurricular activities Katie works hard in the classroom. Katie s teachers all felt that she always gives her best effort in all she does. She strives for excellence in the classroom, which is why she has been chosen for Student of the Month. Congratulations to Katie for being the March Student of the Month. Katie Carrick Congrats To Sarah van de Vusse who won at the county level in the American Legion Americanism and Government Contest

5 Congratulations to the 2013 Spelling Bee Winner The 2013 Strasburg Spelling Bee was held on Thursday, January 17th in the Strasburg Cafetorium. With over 25 years of experience, Daniel Fuller, Associate Professor of English at Kent State University Tuscarawas, served as pronouncer. Students in grades five through eight participated in classroom-based spell-offs, which determined the representatives for each grade level. The top six spellers from each grade then moved on to showcase their skills at Thursday s school-wide spelling bee. Congratulations to all contestants, and a special congratulations goes to the night s top spellers. The first ten rounds of spelling were capped off with a twelve-round match between the night s final two spellers, eighth-grader, Sam Carroll and seventh-grader, Emily Rieger. Carroll, son of Wayne and Lori Carroll of Strasburg, correctly spelled the championship word, Ardent, to become the Strasburg Schools 2013 Spelling Bee Champion. The honor of runner-up was awarded to Rieger, with eighth-graders Mason Miller and Brooke Ashby taking home first-and second-runners up awards, respectively. Carroll will move on to represent Strasburg Schools at the Regional Bee on March 23 rd. We wish him the best of luck in the next level of competition! Power Of The Pen Strasburg has been a part of the Power of the Pen program for many years. This year, the school decided to host its first tournament. The tournament was held on January 12 and was attended by eleven local schools. There were 107 writers who competed at the Strasburg District Tournament. Strasburg s own writers were eighth graders: Brooke Ashton, Maddie Burk, Sam Carroll, Brynn Eckhardt, Maggie Holloway and Katie Nicholson. The seventh grade writers were: Emily Bailey, Katie Carrick, Sarah Dreher and Olivia Martin. The eighth grade team placed second in the competition. Individual awards were also given to Katie Carrick for third, Olivia Martin for sixth, Sam Carroll for eighth, and Brooke Ashton for eleventh place. Those students that placed at the district tournament along with Maddie Burk and Maggie Holloway received scores high enough to compete at the regional tournament. Elementary Book Fair April 5-12 Right To Read Week Theme is Lasso A Good Book May 6-10 The qualifying members of the team competed at the regional tournament at Clear Fork Middle School on March 2.
