With that, I want to say a big Thank You to Candace and Ed Barker for all their hard work reupholstering the chairs and barstools in the. If you happen to see them, tell them thank you. I have seen folks around the course picking up cigarette butts that don t even smoke. Thank you for doing that. I want to ask if you do smoke, please do not throw the butts on the ground. This is unsightly and should not be an issue. There are plenty of trash cans around to dispose of them properly. We have a beautiful course, let s keep it free of trash. Also, please make sure you follow the Cart Path Rules of the day. Lance and his crew work hard to make our course the best it can be. It is all of our job to help were we can. As you all know by now, we have had a lot going on around the club and course, with more coming. It is going to be great year for our club. C L U B H O U S E M A N A G E R I think it s safe to say that everyone is ready for the weather and the temps to get better. I think this is the best time of year. We can start thinking about having some of our events outside. This March is going to be a busy one. We start off on the 3 rd with our annual Bus Trip to Oaklawn. On return there will be food and drinks to finish off the day. Mid-month is the return of our Team Trivia Night. All ages are welcome and encouraged. Ah, there nothing like getting out smarted by a teenager. Later in the month there will be an AWESOME party in the circle. There is going to be a crawfish boil and a band in the front yard. Throw in the Easter Bunny, the Sunday Brunch, the Return of Couples Golf and the Thursday Night Buffets and it makes for great kick-off to Spring. I hope that all of you received my on the reformation of the Club House and Entertainment Committees. With so many new faces, I would really like to see some of our newer members as well as the veterans as part of the committees. Everyone s ideas and support will be appreciated. 3 Page 3 Maumelle Country Club Marc h 2018 T U R F TALK In preparation for spring and summer, MCC turfgrass crew has been busy despite typical cold wet February. One of our biggest tasks at hand during this time of year is to apply our pre-emergence herbicides to help prevent the germination of certain broadleaf summer weeds. By definition, a weed, is an undesirable plant, or a plant not wanted. Typically, on southern golf courses such as ours, which by the way we are in what is known as the transition zone, we battle both warm season weeds as well as cool season weeds. So, in order to achieve a clean, healthy, aesthetically, playable turf, it s a constant battle and a balancing act not only from a timing standpoint, but also a monetary factor, and most importantly to insure environmental safe or friendly applications. Maumelle Country Club has over 260 acres to maintain. So, it definitely poses challenges when trying to eliminate or eradicate those undesirable weeds. Unfortunately, that amount of acreage or area is just not feasible or within our budget to treat the entire property. One must be creative and have a plan of attack to give the club members what they expect and deserve. We use the pre-emerges in the fall in spring to try and prevent germination, and post-emerge herbicides to control weeds already that have popped or germinated. Our biggest weed pest in the winter and spring is annual blue grass, also known as Poa Annua. Poa Annua, believe it or not, is what they putt on at Pebble Beach and other courses in different climates or zones. Hence, the definition of a weed, undesirable, we do not desire annual bluegrass, whereas Pebble desires it. Summer weeds that we try to control include crabgrass, goosegrass, dallisgrass, nutsedge, and a plethora of other undesirable plants. The goose and crabgrass, we can have success with our pre-emergence, dallisgrass, however, is mostly controlled post-emergence. It can be overwhelming at times, particularly in the transition months when our warm season turf doesn t know whether to go dormant or grow and determining which weeds to target. How does one manage all this acreage on a limited budget and so many variables? First, safety and environmentally friendly always first and foremost. Our applications depend on mother nature, too much wind is not the time to apply, rainfall forecasted could wash away all your product and or cause runoff into our wetlands, lakes, and rivers. Air temps and soil temps, sunshine, precipitation, all our variables that factor in on how certain chemicals can or cannot breakdown and to be most efficient in how they work. Golfers and play can and does affect our applications. Abide course rules, e.i., carts on paths, tracking through pesticides can burn or scar turf and make for unsightly fairways, even foot traffic can affect our applications. Cost, is probably the most determining factor when planning a weed control program. There are literally thousands of products to choose from, with different chemical make-ups and modes of actions. Cost can range from $10/acre to upwards of $200/acre, and like everything, you get what you pay for. This year, in attempt to cover the course from tee to green, including roughs, and clubhouse area, along with driving range, we are utilizing two or three products both post and pre-emerges to fit our budget and hopefully cover more area. It is a balancing act with many factors and variables, but we have a plan, and look forward to a cleaner weed free environment. Part of the plan may include closing a hole or two during applications or keeping carts on paths for a day or two. Please remember to follow the dress code as you play the course and use the practice facility. The dress code prohibits denim (blue jeans), requires a collared shirt for men, and the shirt tucked in.
