1 Brookfield Swimming Club March 2017 Dear Owners, Letter from the President The summer season in 2016 was very successful, in large part due to self-managing. The pool was better maintained, chemicals were available, and we had no major issues from the health department this year. We will continue this though If you know of anyone who is interested in working at the pool this summer as a certified Lifeguard, please have them send an expressing their interest to info@brookfieldswimclub.org. One major difference in 2017 is with the school schedule. The Fairfax County School Board decided to start school the week before Labor Day (September 4). As a result, the pool hours will revert to the school hours at the end of the season. Our challenge will be staffing the pool during pool hours. College students will have returned to school and high school students will be back in classes. Please be patient with us as we figure out how to best staff the pool and maximize the pool hours. We will look to extend the pool season a few weekends which worked well in Our Dog swim was also popular we will consider repeating it in 2017 as well. If you are able to support the swim team either by having kids swim or by cheering on the team during our meets, you are encouraged to participate! Go Breakers! Brookfield Swim Club has sponsored a Boy Scout of America (BSA) troop troop We look forward to working with the Boy Scouts as they grow and mature; the swim club offers multiple opportunities for them to demonstrate leadership and to help the community. See the announcement later in this newsletter. A couple of improvements have been made for We have replaced the pool basketball hoop. Unlike the previous hoops, this one is industrial grade and should last longer than other hoops in the past. One of the scouts will be installing parking lot lighting using solar lighting. He is also implementing several other site improvements including a handrail on the steps in the parking lot. If you would like to help fund his effort check out the GoFundMe site at: We extended our wireless capability with broadband from Cox Communications. We hope this provides opportunities for people to join their children at the pool while still checking in with work. We are also re-caulking and re-surfacing the bottom of the pool to remove the hairline cracks that appear over time. I am looking forward to another season at the pool and I hope you are too! If you have any concerns, please don t hesitate to contact a member of the board or come to a board meeting. Board meetings continue to be held at the clubhouse on the first Monday of the month from 7:30 8:30pm. We always have opportunities for volunteering if you are available to help out and if you are interested in serving on the board, each year we have three (3) positions come available. If you would like a volunteer opportunity where you can make a big difference for the community pool, please let me know and I will provide information about each of the board positions. -Michael

Coach Kelly Guerrero will be returning as our head coach for 2017! Swim team signups will be Sunday, May 7 th from 3-5PM at the Clubhouse. Stay tuned for more information. Registration for Mini Breakers will take place separately later in May. If you ve always wondered what swim team is about, please stop by during registration and meet the Team Reps and Coaches! As many of you may have heard, Aardvark is closing their doors, so we have had to find a new team shop. We ve decided to use Cassel s Sports in Herndon for our team needs. They ve already been taking care of us and we know we will have a good relationship moving forward. Be on the lookout for our new team suit! Mark your calendars now: Our practice schedule will be the same as last year with evening practices beginning on Tuesday, May 30 th. Morning practices will begin on Monday, June 26 th. Time trials is scheduled for Saturday, June 17 th. Since this is our last year as Team Reps, we are hoping for a new dynamic duo to step forward sooner than later to at least see some of the inner workings of the team this summer. It will make the job easier in the end, we promise! We cannot stress enough that this is our last year and the team cannot compete in the NVSL without Team Reps. 3 Boy Scout Troop 1548 Sponsored by the Swim Club The Brookfield Swim Club (BSC) is pleased to announce its sponsorship of Boy Scout Troop 1548, The All-Weather Troop. The Troop s name reflects its very active, outdoor-oriented, year-round program. Troop 1548, founded in 1972, draws Scouts from local neighborhoods. Several Brookfield families currently have or used to have sons who are/were Scouts in Troop We look forward to our new, closer partnership. For example, the Scouts can use our Club as a focal point and the Club can benefit from the good deeds the Scouts offer. Additionally, the Troop will have the opportunity to use our pool for water-oriented merit badges. BSC s sponsorship formally means that we are now the Troop s Chartering Organization. We are the home for the Troop. Our families will also get to know the Troop better and, as a result, some of their sons may choose to join the Troop, which has produced a large number of Eagle Scouts and conducts high adventure trips to destinations such as Alaska, Hadrian s Wall in the United Kingdom and the BSA s High Adventure Bases of Philmont, Northern Tier and Sea Base. School Hours 2017 Pool Hours Summer Hours (May 27 June 23; September 4-8) (June 24 September 3) Mon Thur: 2 pm 8 pm Sun Sat: 11am 9 pm Fri Sat: 11 am 9 pm Sunday: 11am 8 pm GUEST PASSES Individual Passes: $5.00 weekdays & weekends. Ten passes for $40 (good anytime) are available at the check-in desk. Please contact the Pool Manager for parties of 10 or more. Clubhouse Information The Clubhouse is available to rent to both members ($40/hour) and non-members ($50/hour) for private events. Income from the rental of the Clubhouse is used for the upkeep of the club so recommend it to your friends, families, neighbors and co-workers!!! With approximately 1,200 square feet of open space it is perfect for birthday parties, bridal and baby showers, small business meetings, exercise classes and many other special occasions!!! 4 The 2017 Board Michael Kapfer returns for his final season as President of the board. He and his wife, Annie, are natives of the area. Their 4 children enjoy socializing with their friends at the pool and sponsors the BBQ each year at the pool on opening day. The Kapfers have been members of the pool since Holly Tenaglia returns as Vice President. She has been a member of the pool for more than 10 years and is no stranger to the deck. She loves to soak up the sun and teaches swim and dive lessons. She grew up around a pool, spending her high school years as a diver and 5 years as a swim instructor for the Y.M.C.A., along with many years as a lifeguard. She loves spending her days at the pool and hopes to make this another enjoyable summer for all Brookfield Swim Club members. Scott Szachara is our Treasurer this year. Scott and his wife Jennifer have been residents of Brookfield since 1995 and they enjoy being a part of the Brookfield community. Scott s family joined the Brookfield Swim Club a few years ago and his three daughters are members of the swim team. During the summer, the family spends a lot of time at the pool with their neighbors and friends. The Brookfield pool is a great place to spend the summer and build childhood memories. He is happy to give back to the pool community and hopes to help make this another fun summer for all of us. Chris Stavridis continues as the board Secretary. Her family has been members of the pool since She is an active Girl Scout volunteer including working with a busy troop of middle school girls and working at a Girl Scout summer day camp. She and her three children can be found poolside most summer days. The long lazy (and hot) days of summer are meant to be spent with friends at the pool! She is the great coordinator of the ice cream social on the last day of school. Scott Mowry continues in the role of Pool Administrator. Scott s family joined Brookfield Swim Club in 2005 when they moved from Burke to Chantilly. Caitlin, Jessica and Natalie are swim team members. Scott is seen at the pool timing or cooking for swim meets and occasionally gets to play in the pool on the weekends; but the girls spend much of their summer splashing around Brookfield. Dana Condemi and Tina Clark are the Swim Team Representatives in They are looking forward to the their final season as representatives of the Breakers. Dana grew up in New Hampshire. She loves watching her sons Benjamin and Simon swim for the Breakers. They've been a part of the team for 8 years. Tina loves to cheer for her three girls, Caroline, Lauren and Kate. Here's to a fun summer! Kim Overholt is filling the role of Membership Director, the role previously coordinated by Liz Fisher. Her family has resided in the Brookfield neighborhood since 2005 and have been members of the pool since She works during the school year as the Crossing Guard for Brookfield Elementary and volunteers a lot of her time with both of her daughters the Girl Scout Troops. Ted Tinkleman is filling the role of At Large Director. Ted and his wife Pat have been members of the Brookfield Swim Club since He has previously served on the Brookfield Swim Club Board of Directors and has over a decade of experience in pool management. He is a former competitive swimmer who has coached stroke and turn programs and swim lessons. Christine Klosky joins the board as an at large director and will serve as the liaison between the pool and the Boy Scout troop. Christine and her family have been members since Her daughter looks forward to participating in swim team every summer. She currently serves the community as the Rocky Run MS PTA President and as the Charter Organization Representative for Boy Scout Troop 1548.

Guest passes are recorded on the check-in system at season s start and expire at season s end Fees Equity Membership: Family $540 A discount of $50 will be applied for members returning from 2016 who register and pay for the 2017 season before May 1, There is a $50 registration fee for new members or returning members who were not active in If you held a couple or individual membership in 2016 or prior years, please contact the Membership director for your rate. New couple and individual memberships are only available to those who have held a family membership in good standing over the last five (5) consecutive years. Box Chantilly, VA Please include your membership number on your check, or make sure your home address is listed Pay online with a credit card 10 Guest Pass Referral Bonus We are always in need of new members. We lose members each year when children grow up; families leave the area, etc. Thirty additional member families would make a huge difference in our ability to build capital reserves and finance improvements that will make the pool a better place to visit. Member referrals are our chief source of new members. The club is awarding 10 guest passes for referral of new members. The referring member is listed on the new member s application.
