Last weekend s action against Nebraska-Kearney was cancelled because of snow. UNC returns 19 players and seven starters from last year s North Central Conference regular season championship squad that won 34 games overall, the second most in school history. This season marks the team s first in the reclassification process to Division I. Due to a large amount of Division I games on the schedule this season, the Bears successfully petitioned the NCAA for the right to count as a D-I this season and count in the RPI. All of this occurred one year ahead of schedule due to the 40-plus D-I games on the slate. Fort Hays State has controlled the series with UNC over the past decade, winning 17 of the last 21 contests, including all three a year ago. UNC continues its homestand early the next week when they challenge Division I Southern Utah on Feb. 16 and 17 for a pair of nine-innings games. Southern Utah was picked to finish second in the Mid-Continent this season. UNC holds a 5-2 all-time advantage over Southern Utah, with the Bears having won the last meeting, 8-5, in 1994 at the Air Force Tournament. About Fort Hays State: The Tigers are under the direction of first year head coach Matt Ranson. Last year the Tigers were overall, won both the RMAC regular season and tournament championships and hosted the NCAA West Regional. The UNC series marks their first competition of the spring. About Southern Utah: The Division I Thunderbirds were picked to finish second in the Mid-Continent Conference this season after finishing and being tournament runners-up last season. SUU had their weekend series with Mesa State cancelled last weekend. They will face off with two future UNC opponents this weekend, when they battle Creighton and Air Force in Colorado Springs before playing in Greeley. head coach kevin smallcomb Kevin Smallcomb Alma Mater: CS-Sacramento, 1985 Family: Wife, Julie and children Katerina & Kyndle. 2nd Season at UNC all-time NCAA record. Led Mendocino to four playoffs four times (1994, 1996, 1998, 1999). Served as a G.A. at the University of Arkansas in Was an assistant coach at American River College from unc notes Go Away Snow: UNC s opening weekend series with Nebraska-Kearney was cancelled due to snow. Last year the Bears were lucky with weather, having only one game cancelled (versus Mesa State) due to bitter cold. Several other games were postponed a day or two but no others were cancelled due to Mother Nature. Bears Make Move to Division I: On May 10, 2002 the UNC Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a move for the UNC intercollegiate athletics program to NCAA Division I. The sports year marked the last season for the Bears in the North Central Conference and the NCAA Division II level. This season the Bears begin a fouryear reclassification period before officially becoming a Division I school in Over the next four years, UNC will be unable to compete in NCAA postseason competition. UNC will be competiting as an independent during the school year and will hopefully find conference affiliation before the end of the reclassification period. In the season the Bears will be eligible for at-large berths in NCAA Championships. The move to Division I is a move back for the UNC baseball program, which was last a Division I Independent during the 1990 season, although all other UNC sports were competing at the Division II level already. Baseball Team Gets RPI For 2004 Season: Unlike the other sports at UNC, the baseball team will act as a counter this season and be included among the Division I RPI in Due to the large number of Division I games on the schedule (over 40), UNC successful petitioned the NCAA for the right to count as a Division I team this season, a full year ahead of the other UNC sports programs. Bears Ranked No. 5 Among Division I Independent in Preseason Poll By Baseball America: The UNC baseball team was ranked fifth in a Baseball American preseason poll of Division I Independents released in late January. Perennial national power Miami (Fla.) is ranked first among D-I Independents followed by Savannah State, Sacramento State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Sacramento State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi are each on the UNC schedule this season as are New York Tech (No. 7), Pace University (No. 9) and Hawaii-Hilo (No. 10). Delich to Miss 2004 Season With Injury: 2003 ABCA second-team All-American first baseman Phil Delich will miss the 2004 season due to a shoulder injury that will require season-ending surgery. Delich had a monster season a year ago hitting.401 and breaking a 21-year old school record for RBI in a season (73). Delich will seek a medical redshirt and return for his senior campaign in UNC Baseball Game Notes 3

4 Home Sweet Home: UNC enjoyed great success at Jackson Field in The Bears held a 23-6 overall record at home and a 12-0 regular season mark against NCC teams. The Bears also posted a 14-game winning streak at Jackson Field and a 17-game winning streak against NCC schools that was snapped on May 8 against North Dakota State. Saving One: Junior closer John Nielsen is on his way to becoming the leading saves man in UNC history. Last season he recorded six saves in his first-year in the closer s role. That ranked him second on the UNC single season saves list and he is now tied for third (with Wade Brinkopf) on the career saves list. The single season save record is seven, currently held by Josh Durant (1999). The career save record is eight, held by Greg Cook ( ). Starting Streaks: Senior Trevor Allen and junior Brad Baker each enter the 2004 season with long consecutive game started streaks. Each played in all 55 games a season ago, putting Allen s streak at 55 for his career. Baker s is a bit longer, as he has started 70 consecutive games dating back to Apr. 16 of his freshman season (2002). A Football Influence: The UNC baseball roster has quite a few players who have football experience. Sophomore Evan Linn, who is playing his first year of baseball at UNC, is also a member of the UNC football team although he missed this past season with an injury. Junior transfer Bobby Perry led the state in passing efficiency in high school and was a quarterback at Montana State University for a season (2000). Freshman catcher John Ray played both linebacker and fullback for his high school football team, was a twotime all-state selection and helped his team to a state championship his senior year. Sophomore Zach Brockman was a two-time allstate selection as a running back/linebacker and helped Pueblo South to a state title while senior Patrick Wiley was an all-state running back that led Rampart High to a state title. Sophomore infielder Chad Clark led class 4A in receptions (61) during hit senior year of high school. Sophomore Brad Beaman, juniors Ryan Symons, Matt Sutton, and Angelo Telitz and seniors Jarrod Chacon and Ty Tartler each played for their high school teams. A Strong Tradition: With the move back to Division I, the UNC baseball program is no stranger to success at that level. The Bears have appeared in 10 Division I College World Series, including nine from The Bears were last in the CWS in the 1974 season. UNC has appeared at the CWS in 1952, 1953, 1955, 1957, division I independent standings Overall (as of 2/10/04) W L Pct.
