Although no other sports were Division I counters this season, the baseball program (due to the large number of D- I games scheduled this season) petitioned the NCAA, was granted a waiver. So this season the team will be a counter in the 2004 season and have a RPI as a Division I team.

4 Season Preview The Division I era of University of Northern Colorado baseball begins anew with the start of the 2004 season. The Bears, who made 10 Division I College World Series appearances from , begin the four-year reclassification back to Division I after spending just over a decade as a Division II team. UNC starts that transition with a lot of momentum, as in his inaugural season as the Bears coach in 2003, Kevin Smallcomb led the club to the second most wins in school history (34) and a wire-to-wire North Central Conference Championship before the team fell one game short of the NCAA Regionals. We need to learn how to win, Smallcomb said. This season we are hoping to stay healthy, set a school record for wins in a season, establish UNC in a Division I baseball environment and win our Division I Independent Tournament at the end of the season. The 2004 season outlook is also bright thanks to the fact that Smallcomb has ABCA All-American Trevor Allen and the North Central Conference Player of the Year Shane Roberts, returning to the lineup in 2004 after smashing school records a season ago. Allen played in all 55 games during his junior campaign setting UNC records for runs (68, breaking a 42- year old record) and walks (50) in a season while hitting.387 overall with 13 home runs and 70 RBI (the third highest total in school history). Roberts should have been an All- American but was snubbed by the selection committee even though he was the conference player of the year and put together one of the best seasons in school history. Roberts set school records for hits (92), doubles (24), total bases (155) and at-bats (208) and enters his final season of college baseball ranked first all-time in school history in career batting average (.442) and second in career slugging (.745). Having Allen and Roberts back brings our team a wealth of leadership and experience and also sets the bar high as far as expectations go this season, Smallcomb said. OUTFIELD Roberts and Allen account for two parts of the starting outfield with senior Jon Dyson and sophomore Zach Brockman patrolling left field. Dyson led the team with 11 stolen bases and also in on-base percentage (.508) last season while hitting.336 overall. As a freshman, Brockman set school records for hits (6) and runs scored (5) in a game in an impressive performance over Metro State; this season he could see time at any of the outfield spots. While the Bears starters are solid, the backups will give the team even more depth and the staff more flexibility to make moves during games. Redshirt junior Matt Sutton will also see action in the outfield and joins the team after spending last season hitting the weight room. Sophomore Brad Beaman will back up Roberts in center field. Beaman, who was drafted by the Anaheim Angels out of high school, spent last season at Lamar Community College. Junior Ryan Symons, when not playing at first base or in the designated hitter role, could also play in the outfield. There will be lots of competition in the outfield this season, Smallcomb added. Allen and Roberts bring work ethic, dedication, leadership and intensity to the team. Both are looking forward to attaining our team goals and graduating. INFIELD Phil Delich, another ABCA All-American, who set the school mark for RBI (73) in a season last year, was expected to play first base but will miss the season to have shoulder surgery. Delich hit.401 while 11 home runs and 77 total hits while playing great defense at first base last season. His absence pushes Symons into the starter s role at first. Symons had a solid campaign in 2003, hitting.319 with 10 doubles and 23 RBI in 44 total games. Senior Jarrod Chacon, who had 11 hits and scored 11 runs last season, will also see time at first. The opposite corner of the infield will be manned in part by junior Brad Baker, who is making the move from second to third base this season although he will see time at both. Baker has started 95 of a possible 106 games in his two years with the Bears and brings a wellrounded game to the club. His 201 at-bats (second) and 55 RBI (10th) both ranked in the Top 10 in school history a season ago as he hit.333 overall and was second on the team with 13 doubles. Brad brings competitiveness to the team and he knows how to win, Smallcomb said. Third base may be a better fit for us and in his long term goals; however, he was very solid at second base as a freshman and sophomore. Joining Baker at third base is redshirt freshman Brennan Garr who is eager to play after sitting out last season. Garr has pop in his bat and will see time at third when not on the mound. Garr has the possibility to evolve into an impact relief pitcher for the Bears. Also at third base is transfer Ty Tartler, who will be a senior after transferring from Fort Hays State. The middle of the infield will be manned by a trio of players. Junior transfer Craig Troxell should see a lot of action at shortstop this season. He comes to UNC after a year at The Master s College (Calif.) and brings a switchhitting bat and power to the Bears lineup. Last year s shortstop combination of Chad Clark and Kevin Magill have shifted to second base where the sophomore duo are expected to share playing time. Clark brought a good glove to the field last season while Magill was more productive at the plate (.302 batting average and.408 on-base percentage). Most importantly, Clark and Magill

5 bring versatility to the lineup as either could also play at shortstop and Clark can also play at the hot corner. Behind the plate, four guys will see action. Junior college transfer Patrick Perry not only brings the experience of helping develop a pitching staff, but his lefthanded bat is packed with power which is evident from the 11 home runs and 57 RBI he drove in last season as Otero Junior College. Joining Perry will be one of only two true freshmen on the entire UNC roster, John Ray. Ray was chosen by the Atlanta Braves in last year s Amateur Draft but chose to attend UNC instead. Ray set almost every record possible at Monarch High School while hitting.612 with seven home runs his senior season. During his prep career he threw out almost 90 percent of the base runners who tried to steal on him. He is also tremendously athletic, as he was a linebacker and fullback for his high school football team that he helped lead to a state championship last year. The battery is rounded out by senior Patrick Wiley, who showed the power he has in his bat by hitting two home runs in a game last season, and redshirt freshman Shawn Saito, who is also a lefthanded hitter. PITCHING The Bears pitching staff returns eight total pitchers from a season ago including two of its three top starters from last year s conference championship team. Junior Angelo Telitz compiled an 8-2 record in 17 appearances last season as the Bears No. 2 pitcher behind Curt Borland, who graduated and signed with the Boston Red Sox. Senior Brian Carruthers may have been the most consistent UNC pitcher, as he finished the year with a perfect 5-0 record in seven starts and also had two early season saves out of the bullpen. That pair will combine with five newcomers this season to battle it out for a spot in the starting rotation. Transfer Craig Ayers is one of a trio of pitchers from Garden City Community College. Ayers was the A Pitcher of the Year at Eaton High school and helped the Reds to a state championship that season along with Aaron Kelly, who will see time in the Bears bullpen this season. Pat O Neil also attended Garden City two seasons ago before playing at the University of Nebraska last year. At NU, O Neil had a 1-1 record and two saves in 22 appearances. Transfers Bobby Perry and Cary Lott along with hard throwing sophomore Evan Linn, a defensive end on the UNC football who is playing his first season of baseball for the Bears, round out the potential starters on the mound. The bullpen will be anchored by junior closer John Nielsen. Last season, Nielsen took over the closing duties midway through the season and finished the year with six saves, the third highest single season total in UNC history. He needs only three saves this year to become the Bears career leader in saves. But a closer is only as good as the setup men who help protect the lead. Junior Justin Sessions (2-2, 1 save in 17 appearances) and senior Jeremy Whitman (3-1, 2 saves in 15 appearances) return to the roles they were so successful in a year ago. They are joined by true freshman Tyler Pearson, Hawaii-Hilo transfer Adam Inaba and returnees Matt Tucker, Jason Sands and John Costanzo. We will need to develop as a staff, Smallcomb said. Division I baseball is more about pitching and defense than it is hitting. Our staff has more balance this season with left-handing pitching plus we offer a variety of different arm angles, velocities and styles which should help us in the transition to Division I. OUTLOOK I think the strengths of our team include leadership, team chemistry and the goal of helping take the UNC program back to the Division I level, Smallcomb said. In making the move back to D-I, UNC is ineligible for postseason play. But that is not preventing the team from playing a full Division I schedule this year, as the Bears will take to the field over 40 times this season against full D-I squads and four more times against Utah Valley State, a provisional Division I team. That number of D-I games allowed UNC to successfully petition the NCAA for the right to count as a D-I team this season and to receive a RPI ranking. The schedule includes dates with the defending Big 10 Champion Minnesota, defending Big 12 Champion Nebraska and Division I Independent powerhouse Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Bears also play in-state rival Air Force, Kansas State, Southern Utah, Iowa, Northern Illinois, Creighton and Smallcomb s alma mater Sacramento State. And although no NCAA postseason competition will happen this year, the Bears will host the United States Baseball Conference Tournament in May, bringing together independent s Hawaii-Hilo, New York Tech, Pace University and Utah Valley State at Jackson Field. Our schedule will give us exposure in many different regions, Smallcomb said. It will be a challenge for us on the road. We only have four home games in a month stretch through March and April so we will have to be road warriors. We are excited about all the challenges that are in front of us. We hope to take on the challenges aggressively with a focus on long-term success. Hopefully we can develop regional success as a Division I program and represent the state and institution as a quality D-I baseball program.
