UVa is all-time in the NCAA tournament, although the Cavaliers are over the last four seasons. Under Brian O Connor (since 2004), UVa is in the NCAAs. Seeded sixth in the 2013 field, Virginia has earned a national seed for the third time. UVa was the No. 5 seed in 2010 and the top seed in UVa owns three regional championships (2009, 2010, 2011) and advanced to the College World Series in 2009 and virginia one of eight schools in Last 10 ncaa tournaments Virginia is one of eight Division I baseball programs to reach the NCAA tournament each of the last 10 seasons (including 2013). Bryant Virginia aims to continue success at home Virginia has played some of its best baseball this season on its home turf at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers posted a 32-3 record at home, including a 13-2 mark in conference play. Following a 9-8 loss on April 10 to Radford, Virginia won its final 10 home games, including ACC series sweeps of Florida State and Duke. UVa is (.834) at home since Potent lineup from top to bottom There is not an easy out in the Virginia lineup, as all nine Virginia starters are batting at least.279, while six are batting over.300. Five Cavaliers have at least 44 RBI apiece, including Reed Gragnani, who owns 48 RBI while typically batting in the 7- or 8-hole. Nine of UVa s 10 regulars in the lineup own on base percentages of.367 or better, while four are over.400. Virginia finishes Third in RPI Virginia finished No. 3 in the NCAA s RPI report. The ACC leader in batting, Papi has been hot at the plate of late, going 18-for-42 (.429) with 14 runs and 16 RBI in 10 games since UVa returned from its finals break (all in leadoff spot in batting order). Papi was named the ACC Player of the Week each of the last two weeks of the regular season and owns hits in 13 of his last 15 games. Nationally, he is the fourth toughest to strike out, with just nine strikeouts in 196 at bats (one per 21.8 AB). He also has been one of UVa s top run producers with 48 RBI, which is fourth on the team and tied for 14th in the ACC. 4 Late-Inning Thunder Virginia has been strong in the late innings, outscoring its foes from the seventh inning on this year. UVa did not allow a run after the sixth inning in the ACC tournament. UVa owns three ninth-inning rallies from two runs or more down 5-2 in ninth at Clemson, won 6-5 in 11; 6-2 at Wake Forest, won 7-6; 5-3 vs. Duke, won 6-5. The Cavaliers also rallied from five runs down in the sixth inning on April 17 against Old Dominion to win 10-9 in 10 innings. Comeback kids Virginia scored its 21st comeback win of the season last Saturday against Florida State. He owns 10 saves, which ranks second in the ACC. Crockett was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List (one of 51 players nationally). Crockett has made 26 appearances this year, allowing just 10 earned runs while opponents have hit.197 against him. He appeared in 19 of UVa s 30 ACC games (most of any conference pitcher). He has made 85 career appearances most on the staff and fifth most in program history. virginia slows the running game Virginia has shown the propensity to shut down its opponents running games this year. Virginia has allowed just 31 stolen base attempts in 57 games, with 18 successful steals (58% success rate). The Cavaliers also have picked off 11 baserunners. UVa has given up just six stolen bases in nine attempts in the last 25 contests. Against the ACC s top three running teams, Clemson, NC State and Maryland, UVa allowed a combined three stolen bases - zero to Clemson and NCSU and three to Maryland. Freshmen Playing Key Roles Virginia has leaned heavily on its first-year players early this season, particularly on the mound. Twelve true freshmen have seen playing time. Seven true freshmen have accounted for 45 percent of the innings pitched this year (229 of 512 2/3 total). Joe McCarthy has started 55 of 57 contests in the batting order and currently is UVa s 3-hole hitter. virginia among national leaders in runs Virginia ranks third nationally in runs and scoring. New Mexico North Carolina Virginia four cavaliers named to award watch lists Four Virginia players have been named to watch lists for various national awards. Branden Cogswell is one of 25 players to be named to the watch list for the Wallace Award, presented to the nation s top shortstop. Kyle Crockett is one of 51 players on the NCBWA s watch list for the Stopper of the Year Award, which is given to the premier relief pitcher in NCAA baseball. He also is on the Golden Spikes Award watch list. Nick Howard stands as one of 25 players on the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award Watch List. UVa s Danny Hultzen won this award in Nate Irving was named to the watch list for the Johnny Bench Award for the nation s best catcher. cogswell out with fractured finger Branden Cogswell suffered a fractured finger in practice on May 4, breaking the middle finger on his right hand. He had surgery to repair the break and will be reevaluated prior to the NCAA regional. Cogswell was having a sensational year, batting.346 (10th in ACC) with a.464 on base percentage (seventh). Prior to his injury, Cogswell was the lone Cavalier to play in every game in 2013 and had reached base safely in 43 of 47 games this year. McCarthy named acc freshman of year Virginia freshman Joe McCarthy has put together an impressive rookie campaign and was named the ACC s Freshman of the Year last week. He currently ranks third among all ACC freshmen in batting with a.329 average (17th overall). He is second among ACC rookies in walks with 46 (fifth overall) and on base percentage at.455 (ninth overall). Downes An extra-base hit machine In his first year as the Cavaliers cleanup hitter, Brandon Downes has been solid and is batting.318 with 35 extra-base hits. Downes tops the team in home runs (9), triples (7), doubles (19), runs (62), RBI (57) and total bases (134). Downes is first in the ACC in triples, fifth in doubles and sixth in home runs. 5 No Free Passes... Virginia pitchers make opposing batters earn their way on base. The UVa pitching staff has issued just 135 walks in 57 games, by far the fewest walks allowed in the ACC this year. Miami is second with 171. UVa allows just 2.37 walks per nine innings, which is fifth fewest nationally and has a 3.38 strikeout-to-walk ratio, which ranks second nationally behind Cal State Fullerton. The Cavaliers also have hit only 25 batters this year (third fewest nationally).... but plenty of freebies for uva batters While the Cavaliers pitchers have thrived on not issuing walks, Virginia batters have found plenty of ways to get on base. Virginia batters rank sixth nationally with 293 walks (third in ACC). UVa batters also have been hit by 67 pitches, which is third among ACC squads. The Cavaliers rank fifth nationally with a.412 on base percentage. noting the unc series Virginia won a series in Chapel Hill (May 14-16) for the first time since March 17-18, UNC was the highest-ranked opponent the Cavaliers have defeated in a road series since UVa won two of three at then-no. 1 UNC in Virginia hit.318 as a team in the series and racked up 11 extra-base hits. The program s three-game series record was 13,625, set April 13-15, 2012, against North Carolina. The final two games at Davenport Field each drew capacity crowds of 4,980. uva 12th nationally in shutouts Virginia has racked up eight shutouts, which is tied for 12th in the country. UVa is three off the lead, which is held by Oregon State and Rice. The total is already tied with the 2007 squad for fourth most in a season at Virginia. UVa finished with just two shutouts in Papi makes a grand statement Mike Papi has had a flair for the dramatic this year. Two of his homers have been clutch, late-inning grand slams. Papi hit a seventh-inning grand slam to tie the game against Old Dominion. He hit a two-out grand slam on an 0-2 pitch in the ninth inning April 6 to rally UVa to a 7-6 win at Wake. Papi also blasted an 11th-inning homer to win the Clemson game on March 15, just two innings after he hit a two-out RBI single to tie the game in the ninth inning. waddell anchors rotation as rookie Southpaw Brandon Waddell has been a standout while serving as UVa s Friday starter as a freshman. He owns a team-high 73 strikeouts in 78 1/3 innings this year; he ranks fourth among all freshmen nationally in strikeouts. He was named one of Collegiate Baseball s six National Players of the Week on Feb. 25 following a dominating outing vs. Toledo. 6 changes at davenport field Davenport Field underwent several changes during the offseason. A new sand-based playing surface has been installed. After removing the previous surface, crews put in a new irrigation and field drainage system (previous field had no drainage system). The $1 million project also included the installation of a new synthetic warning track that runs in foul territory between the foul poles as well as new dugout flooring surfaces and a new FieldTurf collar behind home plate. Home plate was moved in about five feet, creating more foul territory down the lines as well as new field dimensions: In separate projects, new chairback seats were added to replace the grandstand bleachers and a new video board was erected.
