2 pitching moves pay dividends Virginia tinkered with its pitching rotation in early April, moving Adam Haseley and Alec Bettinger in and shifting Tommy Doyle to the bullpen. In the four series since Bettinger came out of the closer role, UVA s weekend starters are 6-2 with a 2.19 ERA in 78 innings (6 1/2 inns per start). After a tough first weekend at BC, Doyle has allowed one earned run in the last three weeks while picking up three saves and finishing off three more wins. He earned his first two saves at Miami, picking up a two-inning save Friday before recording four straight outs to close the Sunday victory. He left the bases loaded to end the Friday game. quartet of cavaliers honored on midseason watch lists UVA s Adam Haseley, Connor Jones and Matt Thaiss each were tabbed on the midseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List. 4 2015 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS In a turbulent season, Virginia peaked at the perfect time as the Cavaliers won their first NCAA National Championship. Making its second straight trip to the College World Series Finals, UVA avenged its 2014 series defeat to Vanderbilt by defeating the Commodores in a best-of-three series. Virginia finished with a record, including a 10-2 mark in the NCAA tournament. UVA became the first ACC team to win the NCAA baseball championship since Wake Forest in The NCAA championship was the 23rd in Virginia Athletics history. REGULAR SEASON Dealing with youth and an onslaught of injuries, the Cavaliers went in March and April and a berth in the ACC tournament was in peril. UVA bounced back to go 5-1 in their final two ACC series, including a three-game sweep at North Carolina to end the regular season. After winning their ACC tournament play-in game, 11-0, over Georgia Tech, UVA then lost the next three games in pool play. NCAA TOURNAMENT After winning three straight games at the Lake Elsinore Regional, UVA rallied for back-to-back super regional wins at home against Maryland, with Ernie Clement s walk-off, two-run single sending UVA to Omaha. UVA topped Arkansas, 5-3, in its CWS opener, and won two of three games against No. 4 seed Florida to advance to the CWS Finals. UVA dropped the first game of the CWS Finals to Vandy, 5-1, but allowed just two runs over the final two games to rally and win the title. The Cavaliers trailed 2-0 after one inning in Game 3 against Vandy, but Pavin Smith s two-run homer in the fourth inning tied the game and his two-out RBI single in the fifth gave UVA the lead. tournament Notes UVA came from behind in seven of its 10 tournament and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning or later in each of their 10 wins. Forty of Virginia s 57 runs in the tournament came in the fifth inning or later. In seven CWS games, Virginia recorded 24 two-out hits that resulted in 15 runs. Sborz was named College World Series Most Outstanding Player. He tied a CWS record by earning three wins at the 2015 CWS. Sborz made eight appearances in the NCAA tourney and did not allow an earned run. He did not allow an earned run over his final 27 innings, including all 13 of his innings in Omaha. Virginia was just the the third No. 3 seed or lower to win the CWS Finals since seeding began in 1988 (joining No. 3 Oregon State in 2007 and No. 4 Fresno State in 2008). injuries plague cavaliers at key positions Injuries hit UVA hard during the first few weeks of the season. UVA lost four-year starting third baseman Kenny Towns and three-year starting right fielder Joe McCarthy. Three-quarters of the infield is back with Pavin Smith (1B), Ernie Clement (2B) and Daniel Pinero (SS), while starting catchers/dh Matt Thaiss and Robbie Coman also are back in the mix.
