Virginia is 19-6 at home and 37-7 overall against non-conference opponents over the past two seasons. The Virginia pitching staff comes into the game without yielding a run in its last 14 innings pitched. SPLITTING SHUTOUTS Weather allowed for only a doubleheader against Seton Hall on Saturday (March 2). The two teams split the twinbill, each tossing shutouts. Seton Hall limited Virginia to three hits in the opening game and held Virginia scoreless for only the second time in the last 159 games. Griff McGarry, Paul Kosanovich and Andrew Abbott combined for a five-hit, 4-0 clean sheet in game two. McGarry turned in his second-straight quality start for his second win of the year. QUALITY BULLPEN WORK The Virginia bullpen has allowed just one earned run in its last 10 innings pitched, a span of four games. Righthander Chesdin Harrington leads the team with five appearances and has not allowed a run in his last seven innings pitched. He has fanned 10 batters in that stretch including a career-high seven against William & Mary on Feb. 26. Paul Kosanovich has been nearly as effective, allowing just two hits and no runs over his last five innings. He earned his first collegiate victory in the series finale against Villanova on Feb. 24 Andrew Abbott struck out three batters in the ninth inning of a non-save situation on Saturday vs. Seton Hall. He has nine strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched this year. PUSHING THE RIGHT BUTTONS Making his first start of the season, sophomore Devin Ortiz (Irvington, N.J.) hit his first career homer in only his third at bat of the season on Saturday. Ortiz reached base in two of his three at bats and gave Virginia a 2-0 advantage in the second game against Seton Hall. Junior Cayman Richardson also saw his first action in three games in the nightcap against Seton Hall. Playing left field, he went 1-for- 2 with an RBI to go along with two successful sacrifices in the contest. MLB4 AT A GLANCE Virginia played three ranked foes (No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 17 TCU & No. 24 Cal State Fullerton) in the inaugural MLB4 Collegiate Baseball Tournament in Scottdale, Ariz. to open the season. It marked the first time in school history Virginia played three-ranked opponents to start a season and Vanderbilt was the highest ranked team to open the season since 2010 when it started up with a three-game series at No. 11 East Carolina. Against Vanderbilt, an eight-run third inning doomed Virginia in a 15-9 loss in a game that aired live on MLB Network. On Saturday against TCU, the Cavaliers fell behind 7-0 after the first inning and could not recover. In the tournament finale, Cal State Fullerton scored three runs in the top of the ninth to wipe away a 5-3 Virginia advantage. Virginia is winless through its first four games for the first time since 2003 when it dropped its first three games at Auburn. FRESH START 2018 marked the first time in Brian O Connor s tenure that Virginia failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The streak of 14-straight regionals was the fourth-longest in college baseball going into last season. Only two programs, Florida State (41-straight) and Cal State Fullerton (27-straight) hold active streaks more than 14.
