4 MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ANNOUNCES ALEX KIRILLOFF, CEDAR RAPIDS KERNELS MIDWEST LEAGUE MAY PLAYER OF THE MONTH SOUTH BEND, Ind. Minor League Baseball has selected Cedar Rapids Kernels (Twins) Outfielder Alex Kirilloff as the Midwest League Player of the Month for May. Cedar Rapids Kernels (Twins) outfielder Alex Kirilloff batted.360 in 31 games in May and led the Midwest League in hits (41), RBI (25) and total bases (73), was second in extra-base hits (19) and triples (three). Kirilloff finished third in the league in doubles (), slugging (.640) and OPS (1.063). Kirilloff, 20, was selected by Minnesota in the first round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Plum High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Kirilloff, as Player of the Month, joins the following Midwest League May award winners named weekly 'Caps Bounce Back in 2-0 Win COMSTOCK PARK, MI Pitcher Elvin Rodriguez continued his excellent run as the West Michigan Whitecaps shut out the Great Lakes Loons by a score of 2-0 in front of a season-high 7,469 fans Tuesday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark. The right-hander was excellent in tossing five scoreless innings despite throwing 86 pitches but allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out five as the Whitecaps snap their four-game losing streak in the victory and keep their record over the.500 mark at The Caps took an early 1-0 lead when Jordan Pearce plated Cole Peterson with an RBI-single in the first inning. The score remained until the fourth when outfielder Darwin Alvarado pushed across another run with a sacrifice fly. Meanwhile, Rodriguez tossed five scoreless innings to hold the Great Lakes offense at bay, and then enjoyed four scoreless frames from his bullpen. Clate Schmidt tossed three scoreless frames, and Will Vest pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his first save as a Whitecap to ensure the victory. In his last four games, Rodriguez is 2-0 with a 0.77 ERA in 23.1 innings pitched while striking out 32 batters. Rodriguez (4-2) earns his fourth win, while Loons pitcher Edwin Uceta (1-3) took his third loss after giving up two runs in five frames. The Whitecaps record improves back over.500 at while the Loons fall to Pearce led the way with two hits to lead the Whitecaps in the victory. The Caps are now 18-9 at home this season despite holding a road record of -19.

6 Cuttino Signs Pro Contract in Italy WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Danielle Cuttino has signed her first professional contract and it is a big one as she will join Pomi Casalmaggiore Volleyball Club in Italy. The club has the reputation of being one of the top teams in perhaps the toughest league in the world. "I'm so excited to announce that I've signed with Pomi Casalmaggiore Volleyball Club," said Cuttino. "Italy has always been a location that I've wanted to play in and I love the culture there! I want to say thanks to all of my coaches, my parents, teammates and all of the Purdue community who have helped me get to where I am today! It is truly a blessing to be a Boilermaker and have everyone supporting me! Boiler Up!" Cuttino finished her senior season as the Big Ten's statistical champion in kills (300) and kills per set (4.17) against conference opponents. She also led Purdue's offense to an all-time best.301 hitting percentage during the 2017 season. She earned a total of four All-America awards in her final season as a Boilermaker, giving her seven in her career. The seven All-America honors are the most awarded to any studentathlete in Purdue volleyball history. She also became the fourth First Team All-American in program history. She also earned her third AVCA All-Northeast Region honor of her career and her second unanimous All-Big Ten selection of her career. She was named espnw National Player of the Week following Purdue's victories over Minnesota and Wisconsin. "I am a huge believer in Danielle Cuttino and very excited about her first professional contract," said head coach Dave Shondell. "This opportunity in Italy will allow her to grow as a player and person. Danielle is a special athlete who absolutely controls her destiny in our sport. It will be fun watching her pursue her goals." The Indianapolis, Ind., native is eighth in program history in career hitting percentage (.308), 10th in total blocks (4), eighth in block assists (339), and 10th in block solos (72) after splitting her career between middle blocker and outside hitter. Cuttino became one of 26 Boilermakers to earn 1,000 kills in their career and one of six Boilermakers to register 1,000 kills and 400 blocks. She surpassed current Team USA standout and Purdue alumna Annie Drews all-time on the career kills list with 1,389 total kills. Drews also competed for Pomi Casalmaggiore Volleyball Club during the season. Cuttino signing gives Purdue five active alumni competing professionally in Ashley Evans and Azariah Stahl have signed their first pro contracts in Spain and Switzerland respectively while Val Nichol has signed her fourth professional contract to play in Poland next season.

7 Cubs outlast TinCaps with walk-off in th Chris Singleton's walk-off hit plates game winning run South Bend, IN: With Chris Singleton at the plate in the bottom of the th inning and the game winning run at second base, the South Bend Cubs center fielder ripped a line drive down the left field line for a base hit. The Cubs walked-off the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Tuesday night 8-7 after Singleton s game winning hit. South Bend improves to on the season with the dramatic victory. South Bend hit the ground running early on in the night with a three run bottom of the 1st inning against starter Mason Thompson. Austin Filiere hit fifth in the lineup for the first time this season, and Manager Jimmy Gonzalez saw immediate results. With a blast out to left field in the 1st, Filiere brought in three RBI to take the 3-0 lead. The TinCaps simply did not go away on Tuesday night. After starter Brendon Little departed after the sixth inning with just one run allowed and five strikeouts, Fort Wayne began to chip away. With two runs in the top of the 7th inning off of Brendan King and a run in the 8th against Enrique De Los Rios, the game was tied 4-4 heading to the 9th. The new extra innings rule took effect after no team scored in their half of the 9th inning. With a runner automatically being placed on second base, both clubs exchanged two runs each in the 10th. Fighting back and forth, Brian Glowicki took the mound for his second frame of extra inning work. On a throwing error made by the pitcher Glowicki, Fort Wayne took back the lead 7-6. Needing two to tie, and three to win, the Cubs started Filiere at second base to begin the bottom half of the th. On a shallow pop fly, Michael Cruz flew out to the shortstop Gabriel Arias. Nelson Velazquez then struck out against closer Travis Radke. Two outs, no runs scored. That was until Rafael Narea got a hold of an outside fast ball and looped it down the right field line. It dropped fair towards the corner, scoring Filiere. The Cubs had tied it. But they were not done, Narea took second base. To the plate came Singleton, 0-4 on the evening. Again, Radke delivered a fastball. Singleton smashed it. This time it was down the left field line. With no chance for left fielder Jack Suwinski to track it down, Narea scored the game winning run. Gatorade showers and hugs awaited Singleton as he trotted to second base. He finished the night 1/5 with a RBI. The Cubs will look for their fourth straight series win in tomorrow night s game two of the series. First pitch from Four Winds Field is set for 7:05 p.m.

8 RailCats late rally not enough in 4-3 defeat to Goldeyes The RailCats conclude their season-long 10-day homestand on Wednesday night vs. Winnipeg GARY, Ind. Trailing 4-0 after five innings, the Gary SouthShore RailCats rallied with two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth, however, were unable to pull off a come-from-behind win against the reigning champion Goldeyes for the second straight game, falling to Winnipeg, 4-3, in the middle game of the series on a chilly, windy Tuesday evening. The loss was just the second for Gary during their season-long 10-day homestand and remain in second place in the North Division. Winnipeg (10-8) took the opening lead of the game for the second straight night with a two-out run in the second. Reggie Abercrombie led off the inning with a double to right-center for the Goldeyes first hit of the game. Two batters later, Victor Cruzado floated an RBI double down the left field line, plating Abercrombie. The Goldeyes doubled their lead with another run in the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Cruzado drew a bases-loaded walk for his second RBI of the night, making it a 2-0 game. Winnipeg increased their lead to 4-0 with two unearned runs in the fifth. With Andrew Sohn on first and two outs, Reynaldo Rodriguez lifted a pop fly in to shallow center field, however, shortstop Andy De Jesus couldn t make the catch, allowing Sohn to score. Abercrombie then hit the very next pitch to left, however left fielder Reggie Wilson lost the ball in the lights, bringing Rodriguez around to score on Abercrombie s third of four hits. Gary (10-7) ended the shutout with two runs in the sixth. Wilson led off the frame with a walk before Christoph Bono ended his 0-for-17 slide with a single to right. Cole Fabio then advanced both baserunners up a base with a sacrifice bunt before Alex Crosby extended his season-high on-base streak to 14 games with an RBI infield single. De Jesus followed with an RBI single down the left field line, scoring Bono. The RailCats tacked on another run in the eighth, cutting the Winnipeg lead to 4-3. Bono led off the inning with an infield single before Fabio drew a walk. Crosby advanced both runners up 90-feet with a groundout to first before De Jesus brought home his second run with an RBI groundout to third. Daniel Minor (3-1) was charged with the loss in his first career appearance against his former team. The right-hander allowed a season-high four runs (two earned) on six hits and a career-high four walks while striking out five in seven innings. Jeremy Holcombe yielded a hit and a walk in his American Association debut, however, didn t allow a run in the top of the eighth while Myles Smith recorded three straight groundouts in the top of the ninth. Edwin Carl (2-1) earned the win after allowing two runs over a season-best 6.2 innings. The right-hander faced the minimum through five innings and allowed two runs on four hits and a pair of walks while striking out four in his fourth start. Josh Blanco and Jack Charleston each recorded holds with scoreless relief appearances while Victor Capellan secured the win with his league-high eighth save in the bottom of the ninth after blowing his first save on Monday. The RailCats conclude their 10-day homestand vs. the reigning champion Winnipeg Goldeyes on Wednesday night at 7:10. LHP Alex Gunn (2-1, 2.16) opposes Goldeyes LHP Shane Dawson (3-0, 3.38) in the series finale. Wednesday s game is the second of nine Office Wednesday s (10 games), Pretzel Day, a Wine Wednesday and NorthShore Health Centers Wednesday.
