3 Last Game Broncs Fall at No. 6 Texas Feb. 25, 2015 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball fell to the No. 6 University of Texas Longhorns 5-4. The Broncs (5-3) jumped on Connor Mayes in the second as, with two on and one out, freshman McAllen Memorial alum Manny Loredo hit an RBI-single. Then, with the bases loaded and two outs, senior Jesus Garcia hit a grounder in the first base hole. The throw to Mayes covering got away, allowing a run to score to make it 2-0. Loredo finished 3-for-4. Sophomore Victor Garcia Jr. led off the third with a walk, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a groundout before scoring on an RBI-single by senior Logan Landon to make it 3-0. Landon finished 2-for-3 with a walk. The Broncs added a run in the fourth on a two-out sacrifice fly by junior Cole Loncar to make it 4-0. Junior Parker Gallegos mostly shut down the Longhorns (8-2) for 6.1 innings, limiting them to two runs (one earned) on five hits. The first run came with two outs in the fifth on a C.J. Hinojosa RBI-single. The second run came on a one-out RBI-double by Collin Shaw in the seventh that knocked out Gallegos, but senior Clayton Haltom came in and got the final two outs of the inning. Haltom, however, walked Brooks Marlow to start the eighth, and then, one out after junior Matt Rigby allowed an RBI-double to Bret Boswell, sophomore Nikki Rowe alum Andrew Padron allowed a game-tying RBI-single to Zane Gurwitz. In the ninth, the Longhorns put runners on the corners with two outs against junior Isaac Martinez (0-1), and Boswell hit a walk-off single. Boswell finished 3-for-5. 2/25/ R H E W/L SV HR UTPA Isaac Martinez (0-1) No. 6 Texas Ty Culbreth (2-0) Previous Games Broncs Complete Sweep of Abilene Christian Feb. 22, 2015 at Edinburg Baseball Stadium The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team completed the three-game sweep of the Abilene Christian University Wildcats with a 4-3 win to close out the Al Ogletree Classic. The Broncs (5-2) are now winners of five in a row. The Broncs trailed 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, but the Broncs put runners at second and third with nobody out, setting up n RBI-single by junior Cole Loncar. Sophomore Victor Garcia Jr. followed by grounding into a double play to drive in a run and tie the game. In the eighth, senior Logan Landon led off with an infield-single against Ladgie Zotyka (0-1), moved to second on a groundout, to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Correy Davis to put the Broncs on top. That made a winner of junior Matt Rigby (1-0) who pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, striking out one while allowing two hits. Sophomore Nikki Rowe alum Andrew Padron got the final two outs for his third save. The Broncs got on the board against Garrett demeyere right away, as, with Loncar on second and two outs in the first, sophomore Jacob Huckabay hit an RBI-single to make it 1-0. Loncar finished 3-for-4. demeyere settle down from there, pitching three scoreless innings before giving way to Kevin Sheets. Freshman Robert Quinonez scattered five hits over the first six innings, striking out five, but in the seventh, Garrett Hale reached on an error, Brayden Gomez hit an RBI-double and Russell Crippen hit an RBI-triple to knock out Quinonez. Rigby came in and allowed a sacrifice fly to Kyle Carroll as the Wildcats (0-6) went up /22/ R H E W/L SV HR Abilene Christian Ladgie Zotyka (0-1) UTPA X Matt Rigby (1-0) Andrew Padron (3) Jackson Strong Again as Broncs Clinch Series Victory Over Abilene Christian Feb. 21, 2015 at Edinburg Baseball Stadium Reigning Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week and Broncs freshman Nikki Rowe alum Ryan Jackson pitched his second-straight gem to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team to a 5-3 series-clinching victory over the Abilene Christian University Wildcats in the second game of the Al Ogletree Classic. Jackson (1-1) pitched 6.2 innings, striking out four while allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits. For the second start in a row, he did not issue a walk while throwing 72 of his 105 pitches (68.6 percent) for strikes. The Wildcats (0-5) scored their only runs against Jackson in the seventh, starting when Colton Hall led off the inning with a solo home run that squeaked over the right field bullpen wall near the foul pole. Jackson retired the next two batters before Heath Beasley reached on an error to extend the inning. Kyle Carroll doubled to knock out Jackson. Freshman Johnny Gonzalez came in and immediately threw a wild pitch to score a run, but after issuing a walk, Gonzalez bounced back to get Garrett Hale to line out to center to escape the threat. After junior Matt Rigby pitched a eighth, sophomore Nikki Rowe alum Andrew Padron allowed just a solo home run to Russell Crippen in the ninth for his second save. The Broncs (4-2) gave Jackson all of the support he needed in the third. Senior Jesus Garcia drew a one-out walk and freshman McAllen Memorial alum Manny Loredo hit an RBI-triple. After sophomore Victor Garcia Jr. was intentionally walked, a passed ball allowed Loredo to score. Sophomore Jacob Huckabay followed with a single, and junior Cole Loncar hit an RBI-single. Senior Logan Landon then singled to load the bases. One out later, Correy Davis hit a grounder to third, but the throw to first sailed high, allowing two runs to score to make it 5-0. Last Meeting (3/2/14) R H E UTPA Lamar X March 2, 2014 at Vincent-Beck Stadium The Broncs dropped the rubber match of its series with the Cardinals 7-0. Andrew Padron (1-1) allowed just one earned run, but four total on six hits in four and twothirds innings while striking out two. The Cardinals scored their earned run in the second on a Tyler Sullivan sacrifice fly. Padron retired the first two batters he faced in the fifth. After a Mason Salazar single, Sam Bumpers reached on an error, and then Wayne Stanley hit an RBIdouble and Jude Virdine hit a two-run double to knock out Padron with the scored 4-0. The Cardinals put runners at second and third with two outs in the sixth against Kyle Tokunaga. A balk scored one run and then an error scored another run as the Cardinals went up 6-0. In the seventh, the Cardinals loaded the bases with nobody out to knock out Tokunaga. Kevin Santana reached on a fielder s choice error, allowing the run to score, to make it 7-0. That made a winner of Brent Janak (3-0), who pitched five innings of scoreless relief. The Broncs were held silent for the first five innings. Down 6-0 in the sixth, however, Alex Howe hit an infield-single and Dillon Engelhart walked. Bryant Stites followed with a RBI-single, and then, after a walk loaded the bases, Blake Thomas hit a sacrifice fly to bring the Broncs within four. Howe finished 2-for-4 while Engelhart went 1-for-2 with two walks. The Cardinals scored all of their runs with two outs. The Cardinals got their offense started against Kyle Tokunaga (1-4) right away. With two on and two out in the first, Ethan McGill hit an RBI-single, and then, after a hit batsman, a wild pitch scored a run to make it 2-0. The Cardinals doubled their lead in the second on a two-out two-run single by Jesse Hoover to make it 4-0. Tanner Dickerson took over in the third, and after putting up a zero in the third, the Cardinals put a runner on via an error with two outs in the fourth, setting up an RBI-single by McGill to make it 5-0. In the fifth, a pair of infield-singles and a stolen base led to runners on the corners with two outs. Mark Whitehead followed with an RBI-single to make it 6-0. That made a winner of Cody Richey (3-2), who pitched three scoreless innings of relief. Dickerson pitched a career-high five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks. 5 2015 Broncs Team Notes The Broncs have used eight different unique lineups in their first eight games. Dating back to April 5, 2014, the Broncs have now used 33 different unique lineups over their last 33 games. That was the end of a stretch that saw the Broncs use the same lineup three times in a season for the first time since Before that, the Broncs had used 61 different unique lineups in a row dating back to The Broncs have only repeated 10 lineups, not necessarily consecutively, in 175 games since 2012, using 163 unique lineups in that time. After picking up two total hits at the JSU Tournament, senior Logan Landon had two hits in each of the three games of the Al Ogletree classic, hitting.600 (6-for-10) with a double, a triple, a home run, two RBI and three runs scored en route to WAC Hitter of the Week and Madness WAC Player of the Week honors. The Broncs have had three freshmen pitchers, Johnny Gonzalez, Ryan Jackson, and Robert Quinonez, combine for 22.2 innings (36.6 percent of the team total) across seven appearances (six starts), going 1-1 with a save and a 2.38 ERA. The freshmen have combined to strikeout 22 while walking four and allowing 18 hits. Jackson leads the Broncs in strikeouts with 12 while Quinonez ranks third with 10. By hitting.467 (7-for-15) during the JSU Tournament, sophomore Victor Garcia Jr. already has three multi-hit and three multi-rbi games. He had 10 multi-hit and six multi-rbi games last year. After playing 18 one-run games (7-11) last season, tied for the 16 th most in the NCAA and the most for the Broncs since 1996, the Broncs have already played five one-run games (2-3). The Broncs have also played two two-run games (2-0), giving them an average run differential of 1.25 runs per game and an average margin of victory of 2.6 runs per game. The Broncs opened this season with three-straight one-run games. It was the first time since 1992 that the Broncs had played three-straight one-run games to open a season Broncs Game Notes No. 6 Texas (2/25) The Broncs led 4-0 after four and a half innings, but allowed runs in the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth in a 5-4 loss to the sixthranked Longhorns. Freshman Manny Loredo had his first-career multi-hit game, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Logan Landon notched his fourth-straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. He s now 8-for-13 (.615) over his last four games. Abilene Christian (2/22) The Broncs completed the three-game sweep of the Al Ogletree Classic with a 4-3 win over the Wildcats. Freshman Robert Quinonez made his first-career start, pitching six shutout innings before allowing three runs (two earned) in the seventh. Quinonez struck out five without walking anyone. Junior Matt Rigby earned his first-career win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Sophomore Andrew Padron notched his third save, one more than he had all of last year. With five career saves, Padron is now tied for 12 th in program history. Senior Logan Landon hit his first-career home run, a go-ahead two-run shot, as well as his first-career triple, which led to him scoring the game-tying run. Jackson State (2/14) The Broncs closed out the JSU Tournament with a 7-0 win over the host Tigers. In his Broncs debut, junior Parker Gallegos pitched seven shutout innings, striking out four while allowing five hits and three walks. Sophomore Andrew Padron struck out two over two perfect innings to complet the shutout. Sophomore Victor Garcia Jr. went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Tennessee-Martin (2/14) The Broncs picked up their first win of the season, 8-7 over the Skyhawks. The Broncs scored seven runs in the eighth inning to come back from down 6-1. It was the Broncs highest single-inning scoring

6 output since April 13, 2014, when the Broncs scored seven runs in the eighth inning at Utah Valley. Sophomore Victor Garcia Jr. hit his first-career home run, a game-tying grand slam in the eighth, to finish with a career-high tying four RBI. Freshman Robert Quinonez picked up his first-career save, striking out three while allowing one hit and one walk over the final inning and two-thirds. Tennessee-Martin (2/13) The Broncs fell to the Skyhawks 1-0, marking the Broncs first 1-0 loss since April 7, The Broncs were 3-0 in 1-0 games last season. In his collegiate debut, freshman Ryan Jackson twirled eight innings of one-run ball, with the only run coming on a solo home run. He struck out eight while allowing five hits without any walks. It was the second-straight season in which the Broncs earned the No. 2 seed in their conference tournament with a record. The Broncs were the only team in the WAC to win a series with Grand Canyon and one of two to win a series with WAC Champion Sacramento State. The Broncs return two-thirds of starting rotation that produced the 10 th lowest weekend rotation ERA in the NCAA at 2.33 in seniors Blake English (2.52) and Alex Henson (2.88). English pitched a WAC-leading three shutouts, making up onethird of all of the shutouts thrown by WAC starting pitchers. English ranked 29 th in the NCAA and third in the WAC in complete games (four), 180 th in the NCAA and third in the WAC in ERA (2.61), 195 th in the NCAA and fifth in the WAC in walks per nine innings (2.03), and 198 th in the NCAA and fourth in the WAC in WHIP (1.15). Henson ranked 241 st in the NCAA and fourth in the WAC in ERA (2.88). The Broncs were one of four teams in the NCAA to use at least four different starting catchers, and the only team in the nation have four catchers start at least seven games each and have four catchers catch at least 60 innings each. It was the first time since 2007 that the Broncs used four different starting catchers. The Broncs took home a pair of WAC postseason awards, as starting pitcher Sam Street was the WAC Pitcher of the Year while he and catcher/outfielder Alex Howe were members of the All-WAC First Team. Both earned the same honors from College Sports Madness as well, while starting pitcher Blake English earned Madness All-WAC Second Team honors. Broncs in Affiliated Minor League Baseball Right-handed pitcher Sam Street ( ), a 16 th round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2014 MLB Draft, played for the Jamestown Jammers of the New York-Penn League last season, going 1-1 with five saves and a 0.98 ERA. In 27.2 innings across 16 relief appearances, Street struck out 21 while allowing just 13 hits and four walks for a WHIP of A member of the NYPL South All-Star Team, Street held opponents to a.135 batting average. Street went on to pitch for Team Australia in the inaugural U21 Baseball World Cup, pitching a perfect inning for a hold against Japan. Right-handed pitcher Dusten Knight ( ), a 28 th round pick of the San Francisco Giants in the 2013 MLB Draft, played for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Northwest League last season, going 1-3 with one save and a 3.65 ERA. In 37 relief appearances, Knight pitched 37 innings, striking out 44 while allowing 26 hits and 20 walks for a 1.24 WHIP. He held opponents to a.202 batting average. In 2013, Knight helped the Arizona League Giants win a league championship by going 5-1 with two saves and a 1.13 ERA. In 18 relief appearances, he pitched 32 innings, striking out 43 while allowing 24 hits and 11 walks. Opponents hit.209 against Knight. He only allowed one home run, a solo shot.

He spent the previous 12 seasons at Saint Thomas University, earning induction into their Hall of Fame and having his jersey retired in : Led the Broncs to third-straight No. 2 seed in a conference tournament, as the Broncs went in their first season in the Western Athletic Conference The Broncs won each of their final seven WAC series, including taking two out of three from eventual WAC Champion Sacramento State, while completing two sweeps Coached team to 3-1 win at No. 15 Oklahoma State (3/14) Helped develop Sam Street into the WAC Pitcher of the Year and one of the final 18 candidates for the National Pitcher of the Year award. Street led the NCAA in complete games and ranked second in wins. In 2010, Mantrana coached Garrett Blvone to a.428 average, the second highest in program history Coached third baseman/outfielder Angel Ibanez, who was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 28 th round of that year s MLB Draft Also coached pitcher Michael Zouzalik, who signed with the Texas Rangers organization over the summer : Mantrana signed a contract extension on May 24, 2011 to remain in Edinburg for at least another three years. The program has come a long way since Mantrana's arrival in late September of 2008, when the program had only twenty-one players on the roster and no coaching staff (Saint Thomas University): Mantrana came to the Rio Grande Valley after serving 12 seasons as head baseball coach at Saint Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Florida. During his tenure, Mantrana quadrupled, from one to four, the program s number of trips to the College World Series. He was the winningest coach in STU history with a (.671) record, including a 1997 season that ended with a program-record 54 victories. In addition to being the head coach, Mantrana served as the hitting and pitching coach for eight of his 12 seasons. Mantrana s squads appeared in three College World Series, and nine total postseasons. He was recognized as Southeast Coach of the Year on three occasions and also received Florida Sun Conference Coach of the Year honors three times. In 1997, Mantrana guided his first squad at STU to a Florida Sun Conference Tournament Championship, Southeast Region appearance and finished with a record. Mantrana s second season as head coach of the Bobcats ended in his first trip to the College World Series. He also led STU to the Southeast Region Championship and Florida Sun Conference regular season and tournament championships while going In 1999 and 2000, Mantrana led his squad to two more Florida Sun Conference Tournament Championships and Southeast Region Tournaments. The 2000 squad made it to the World Series with a record after winning the Super Regional Tournament as well as the regular season and tournament championships for the Florida Sun Conference. His 2007 squad earned a College World Series appearance with a record and added Florida Sun Conference and Southeast Region Tournament Championships. More than 45 of Mantrana s players have received All-Conference or All-Region accolades with 20 of those players signing professional contracts. He also coached ten All-Americans, including five All-American scholar athletes. Additionally, approximately 95% of players who attended STU for four years earned a degree. Mantrana's players continue to perform extremely well in the classroom. Over half of the players recorded a 3.0 GPA or higher for the second straight year and his annual APR (Academic Progress Report) for student-athletes has been well above what the NCAA considers in good standing. Early Coaching Career: Mantrana began his coaching career as head coach for his alma mater, Jackson High School in Miami, for four years. Mantrana then accepted an assistant coaching job at Miami-Dade Community College in 1995 under head coach Tony Simone where his responsibilities were coaching infielders and hitters while also serving as the recruiting coordinator. Playing Career: Mantrana was an accomplished player for Miami-Dade College, Middle Georgia Community College and Louisiana State University. He was at Miami-Dade for one year before transferring to Middle Georgia where he helped lead his team to a second-place finish at the Junior College World Series. Mantrana was named to the JCWS All-Tournament team and was MVP of the region tournament as a second baseman. He spent the last two years of his college career at LSU under Hall of Fame coach Skip Bertman. Mantrana was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 10th round of the 1981 MLB Draft as a shortstop out of Jackson High School. Mantrana was drafted another three times during his collegiate career before signing a free agent contract with the Detroit Tigers. Mantrana also played for the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers organizations. Education: Mantrana earned a bachelor s degree in Sports Administration from STU in 1990 and then earned his master s degree in Guidance and Counseling from STU in He has also started and is currently working toward a Doctor of Education in Leadership and Management.
