3 Last Game UTRGV Off to 8-0 Start with Sweep of Prairie View A&M Feb. 26, 2017 at UTRGV Baseball Stadium The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team is off to an 8-0 start for the first time since 2012 after completing the four-game sweep of Prairie View A&M (PVAM) with an 11-0, seven-inning victory to close out the Al Ogletree Classic. Senior Eddie Delgado (1-0) continued a run of great pitching for UTRGV, pitching his first complete game and shutout by striking out six in a career-high seven innings of work. He scattered five hits (four singles) while walking two and throwing 56 of his 82 pitches (68.3 percent) for strikes. Junior Ivan Estrella led UTRGV offensively, going 3-for-4 with his first home run, five RBI and two runs scored. PVAM (1-8) starter Jordan Johnson (0-1) struck out four of the first five UTRGV hitters he faced, but UTRGV broke through in the third, loading the bases with two outs before scoring a run on a balk and two on an Estrella single. That was it until the sixth, an inning which Estrella started with a single. UTRGV went on to load the bases with nobody out to set-up a two-run double by freshman La Joya alum Anibal Leal. Freshman Tyler Torres followed with a sacrifice fly. One out later, UTRGV reloaded the bases with back-to-back walks to set-up a two-run single by senior Joseph Collazo. Estrella followed with a three-run blast over the left field wall to cap the eight-run inning. 2/26/ R H E W/L SV HR Prairie View A&M X X Jordan Johnson (0-1) UTRGV X X X Eddie Delgado (1-0) Ivan Estrella (1) Previous Games UTRGV Blows Out Prairie View A&M in Game Two of Doubleheader Feb. 25, 2017 at UTRGV Baseball Stadium The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Prairie View A&M (PVAM) with a 10-3 victory in game two of a doubleheader. UTRGV (7-0) put up runs in each of the first three innings, going up 1-0 on a single by junior Noah Lee against Tyler Laux (0-2) in the first. In the second, junior Cris Castillo hit an RBI-single, senior Jose Garcia came up with a sacrifice fly and junior Austin Siener reached on an error to score a run to put UTRGV up 4-0. UTRGV put runners on the corners with nobody out in the third to set-up a two-run double by senior Austin Oakes. After a walk and a single loaded the bases, Castillo hit a two-run double and Garcia followed with an RBI-single. One out later, junior Ivan Estrella singled in a run to make it Castillo finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Garcia went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases. That was plenty for graduate student Connor Grant (2-0), who didn t allow a hit until the fourth. That was the inning when PVAM (1-8) got on the board for the first time with a two-run single by Corbin Jamison. Overall, Grant struck out 11 in six innings of work while scattering five hits and one walk. He threw 56 of his 86 (65.1 percent) pitches for strikes. 2/25/ R H E W/L SV HR Prairie View A&M Tyler Laux (0-2) UTRGV X Connor Grant (2-0) Garcia Pitches UTRGV Past Prairie View A&M in Game One of Doubleheader Feb. 25, 2017 at UTRGV Baseball Stadium Senior Andrew Garcia struck out over eight shutout innings to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team to a 4-0 victory over Prairie View A&M (PVAM) in game one of a doubleheader. Garcia (2-0) scattered three hits and one walk, retiring 11-straight at one point from the first through fifth innings. PVAM (1-6) threatened in the fifth by putting a runner at third with one out, but Garcia kept the ball in the infield with a lineout and a groundout to escape. Garcia finished with eight groundouts and seven flyouts while throwing 71 of his 105 pitches (67.6 percent) for strikes. UTRGV (5-0) got all the runs it needed in the second when, with runners at second and third and one out, freshman Tyler Torres hit a two-run triple and Cris Castillo followed with an RBI-single to make it 3-0. UTRGV added a run in the sixth on an RBI-groundout by junior Noah Lee, who finished 2-for-3 with two doubles. Senior Jose Garcia also had two hits, going 2-for-4. Series Notes: UTRGV is 9-4 all-time against Houston in one-run games First met in 1948 when Edinburg Junior College, a two-year school, went against the University of Houston, which had been a fouryear institution for 12 years. UTPA Houston x April 5, 2009 at Houston UTPA fell at Houston After scoring a run in the opening inning, UTPA struggled on the mound, giving up eight runs in the first three frames and another two in the fifth. UTPA posted another run in the top of the sixth on a ground out to second by Garrett Bivone that allowed Jose Mendoza to score. Mendoza finished the contest 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base. Before the contest was over, UTRGV gave up another three runs in the bottom of the eighth to give Houston a 15-2 advantage. In the top of the ninth, UTPA able to score a run on a wild pitch as Thomas Tovar crossed the plate. Series Notes: The series between UTRGV and Lamar dates back to 1967 They are former Sun Belt Conference opponents, with UTRGV going 8-17 against Lamar in conference play and 1-0 in Sun Belt Conference Tournament play They are also former American South Conference opponents, with UTRGV going 2-4 against Lamar in conference play. Last Meeting (3/6/16) R H E UTRGV Lamar X March 6, 2016 at Vincent-Beck Stadium UTRGV dropped the finale of a three-game series against Lamar 4-1. UTRGV piled up 12 hits, including 11 in 5.1 innings against Lamar starter Billy Love, but the only hit that resulted in a run came in the fourth, when Victor Garcia Jr. singled to right to bring home Cole Loncar and make it 1-0. Garcia finished 3-for-4. Joseph Collazo, Jose Garcia and Anthony Gomez had two hits each. UTRGV threatened again in the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but Brett Brown (1-0) came in and got a double play to escape the threat. Ryan Jackson (0-3) only allowed one hit over the first three innings, but Lamar put runners on the corners with one out in the fourth to set-up a game-tying single by Robin Adames. Lamar scored the rest of its runs in the sixth, as with two on and nobody out, Adames hit an RBI-double, Jacoby Middleton hit an RBI-single, and then, one out later, Ryan Erickson hit an RBI-single to complete the scoring. Eddie Delgado silenced the Cardinals after that, pitching 1.2 innings of one-hit relief. Andrew Padron finished up with a scoreless inning, striking out one. 6 2017 Game Notes Prairie View A&M (2/26) UTRGV completed its second-straight four game sweep by with an 11-0, seven-inning victory. UTRGV is now 8-0 for the first time since 2012 and third time in program history. The 2012 team lost its ninth game before winning its next three to start 11-1 en route to a finish. The other occurrence was 1979, when the team started 9-0 en route to a record and a berth in the NCAA Regionals. Junior Ivan Estrella set the team high-water mark for RBI this season with five while going 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. He had two hits during an eight-run sixth inning, including the single to start the inning and the three-run blast to cap it. Making his first start since April 3, 2016 and the second of his career, senior Eddie Delgado pitched his first complete game and shutout, going a career-high seven innings and striking out six while scattring five hits (four singles) and two walks. Prairie View A&M (2/25) UTRGV completed its second doubleheader sweep of the season with a 10-3 victory. This is the first time since 2015 that UTRGV has had two multiwin days after sweeping a doubleheader at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 2-1 and 7-3 (4/28) and beating UT Martin 8-7 and host Jackson State 7-0 (2/14). Junior Cris Castillo posted his first tthree-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a double, a career-high three RBI and a career-high two runs scored. Prairie View A&M (2/25) UTRGV won its second shutout of the season, 4-0. Junior Andrew Garcia struck out a career-high eight in eight scoreless innings, scattering three hits and one walk. At one point he retired 11-straight from the first through the fifth inning. Junior Noah Lee went 2-for-3 with two doubles. Prairie View A&M (2/24) UTRGV opened the Al Ogletree Classic with a 6-1 victory. At 5-0, UTRGV is off to its best start since 2012, when it started 8-0 en route to a record. Junior Carter Johnson pitched a complete game two-hitter, striking out 13 without walking anyone. He retied the first 12 and last 11 hitters he faced. It was UTRGV s second complete game of the season and first of nine innings. The 13 strikeouts are the most by a UTRGV pitcher since May 4, 2013, when Dusten Knight struck out 14 at North Dakota. Senior Jose Garcia poste his fourth multi-hit game in five tries by going 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Texas Southern (2/19) UTRGV completed the four-game series sweep with a 5-4 victory in 10 innings. It was UTRGV s first weekend series sweep of an opponent since April 15-17, 2016, a three-game home sweep of North Dakota. It was UTRGV s first four-game weekend series sweep of an opponent since April 12-14, 2013, a home sweep of Chicago State. It was UTRGV s first extra-innings affair since May 14, 2016, a 3-2, 13-inning loss at Utah Valley. It was UTRGV s first home extrainnings game since April 23-24, 2016, a 5-3, 15-inning loss to Sacramento State. It was UTRGV s first extra-innings victory since March 22, 2016, a inning win over (RV) Texas State. Junior Cris Castillo hit a walk-off single with one out in the 10 th inning. Senior José Garcia hit his second no-doubt home run to left in as many days, this time to tie the game at 4 in the seventh. Garcia earned WAC Hitter of the Week and Madness WAC Player of the Week honors. Making his third start of the weekend, freshman Anibal Leal posted his first multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. His first hit was UTRGV s first, coming in the fourth. Senior Eddie Delgado pitched a career-high tying 5.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out a career-high seven while scattering four hits and one walk. Junior Josh Witherspoon tossed two scoreless innings in his debut, striking out two. Senior Austin Douglas worked out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the 10 th by getting a striking out and a pop-up en route to his first-career win after converting from catcher midway through last season and into the summer. Texas Southern Game Two (2/18) UTRGV completed the doubleheader sweep with a 9-0 victory. It was the first time UTRGV has swept a doubleheader since April 9, 2016, 7-1 and 9-2 at Chicago State. It was the first time UTRGV has swept a home doubleheader since March 8, 2014, 5-2 and 4-2 vs. Arlington Baptist. 7 Senior José Garcia hit for the cycle in his first four at-bats while finishing a career-best 5-for-5 with a career-high three RBI and a career-high tying three runs scored. After finishing a home run short of the cycle twice last season, Garcia crushed his firstcareer home run in the fifth. Senior Joseph Collazo also had a triple, the first of his career, giving UTRGV five players with five total triples after having four players with nine total triples last season. Junior Casey Danley homered for the second-straight game. Junior Andrew Garcia pitched his third-career complete game, allowing just one earned run while striking out five compared to one walk in seven innings. Texas Southern (2/17) UTRGV opened the season with an 11-4 win over TSU. UTRGV is now 6-3 in season openers and 8-1 in home openers under head coach Manny Mantrana. Alumni in Minor League Baseball Four of the six UTRGV baseball alumni playing professionally in 2016 won championships, including outfielder Logan Landon, left-handed pitcher Alex Henson, right-handed pitcher Sam Street, and first baseman turned right-handed pitcher Roger Bernal. Landon ( ), a 10 th round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2015 MLB Draft, led the Great Lakes Loons, the single-a affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, to the Midwest League Championship by hitting.263 with 21 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 52 RBI, 50 runs scored and 22 stolen bases in 118 games. He made a diving catch in centerfield that ranked No. 4 on SportsCenter s Top 10 on May 5, Landon split his rookie season between three teams, including the Loons, Ogden Raptors (Pioneer, Class R+), and Arizona League Dodgers (Arizona League, Class R). Overall, Landon hit.273/,354/.391 with seven doubles, one triple, two home runs, 15 RBI and 23 runs scored in 35 games. He drew almost as many walks (15) as strikeouts (19) and was 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts. Henson ( ), who signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as an undrafted free agent, helped the Orem Owlz, the rookie-league affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, to the Pioneer League Championship by going 1-1 with one save and a 3.00 ERA. In 22 relief appearances, Henson struck out 30 in 33 innings, allowing 29 hits and 17 walks. Opponents hit.234 against him. He spent the 2015 season with the Arizona Leauge Angels, going 2-1 with a 2.76 ERA. In 13 relief appearances, Henson pitched 32.2 innings, striking out 26 while walking nine and allowing 32 hits for a 1.26 WHIP. He held opponents to a.256 batting average. Street ( ), a 16 th round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2014 MLB Draft, pitched the Bradenton Marauders, the advanced-a affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, to the Florida State League Championship by going 3-2 with one save and a 2.26 ERA. In 27 relief appearances, Street pitched 55.2 innings, striking out 38 while scattering 46 hits and 23 walks. Opponents hit.225 against him. He is currently part of the Designated Pitcher Pool for Team Australia in the World Baseball Classic. Street played for the Western Virginia Power (South Atlantic League, Class A) last season, going 3-1 with six saves and a 2.10 ERA. He held opponents to a.135 batting average. Shortly after the season ended, Street was invited to take part in the Pirates instructional league in Bradenton, Fla. Street went on to pitch for Team Australia in the inaugural U21 Baseball World Cup, pitching a perfect inning for a hold against Japan. Bernal helped the Pericos de Puebla to the 2016 AAA Mexican League Championship. In his first season as a pitcher after playing first base at UTPA and then first base and shortstop professionally, Bernal struck out 18 in 27 innings while going 1-0 in 23 games. Right-hander Guadalupe Barrera also spent some time with Pericos de Puebla before being placed on the reserved list and sent to the minors. Right-handed pitcher Dusten Knight ( ), a 28 th round pick of the San Francisco Giants in the 2013 MLB Draft, played for the San José Giants, the Advanced-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, in 2016, going 3-1 with two saves and a 5.02 ERA. In the strong hitting California League, Knight appeared in 43 games, pitching 80.2 innings and striking out 90 while issuing just 20 walks. Opponents came up with 90 hits, batting.279 against Knight. He played for the Augusta GreenJackets (South Atlantic League, Class A) last season, going 7-3 with three saves and a 2.69 ERA. In 38 games (one start), Knight pitched 73.2 innings, striking out 86 while walking 24 and allowing 58 hits for a 1.11 WHIP and.212 opponents batting average. Knight played for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes of the Northwest League in 2014, going 1-3 with one save and a 3.65 ERA. In 2013, Knight helped the Arizona League Giants win a league championship by going 5-1 with two saves and a 1.13 ERA. Right-hander Michael Zouzalik pitched for three teams in the Baltimore Orioles organization in 2016, advancing as far as AAA Norfolk of the International League, for whom he appeared in three games, pitching 8.2 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out four. Zouzalik also spent time with AA Bowie of the Eastern League, going 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 12 games. Zoualik pitched 24 innings, striking out 15 while walking seven. He spent most of the season with Advanced-A Frederick of the Carolina League, going 0-1 with 11 saves and a 3.95 ERA. In 29 games, Zouzalik pitched 41 innings, striking out 39 while walking 11 and allowing 38 hits. Zouzalik was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Texas Rangers on Aug. 27, 2012 before splitting the 2013 season with the Spokane Indians (Northwest League, Class A-) and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Carolina League, Class A+). Zouzalik went 2-0 with a save and a 3.95 ERA in nine relief appearances for Myrtle Beach, striking out 13 in 13.2 innings. The program has come a long way since UTRGV 2017 Game Notes 12 Mantrana's arrival in late September of 2008, when the program had only twentyone players on the roster and no coaching staff (Saint Thomas University): Mantrana came to the Rio Grande Valley after serving 12 seasons as head baseball coach at Saint Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Florida. During his tenure, Mantrana quadrupled, from one to four, the program s number of trips to the College World Series. He was the winningest coach in STU history with a (.672) record, including a 1997 season that ended with a program-record 54 victories. In addition to being the head coach, Mantrana served as the hitting and pitching coach for eight of his 12 seasons. Mantrana s squads appeared in three College World Series, and nine total postseasons. He was recognized as Southeast Coach of the Year on three occasions and also received Florida Sun Conference Coach of the Year honors three times. In 1997, Mantrana guided his first squad at STU to a Florida Sun Conference Tournament Championship, Southeast Region appearance and finished with a record. Mantrana s second season as head coach of the Bobcats ended in his first trip to the College World Series. He also led STU to the Southeast Region Championship and Florida Sun Conference regular season and tournament championships while going In 1999 and 2000, Mantrana led his squad to two more Florida Sun Conference Tournament Championships and Southeast Region Tournaments. The 2000 squad made it to the World Series with a record after winning the Super Regional Tournament as well as the regular season and tournament championships for the Florida Sun Conference. His 2007 squad earned a College World Series appearance with a record and added Florida Sun Conference and Southeast Region Tournament Championships. More than 45 of Mantrana s players have received All- Conference or All-Region accolades with 20 of those players signing professional contracts. He also coached ten All-Americans, including five All-American scholar athletes. Additionally, approximately 95% of players who attended STU for four years earned a degree. Mantrana's players continue to perform extremely well in the classroom. Over half of the players recorded a 3.0 GPA or higher for the second straight year and his annual APR (Academic Progress Report) for studentathletes has been well above what the NCAA considers in good standing. Early Coaching Career: Mantrana began his coaching career as head coach for his alma mater, Jackson High School in Miami, for four years. Mantrana then accepted an assistant coaching job at Miami-Dade Community College in 1995 under head coach Tony Simone where his responsibilities were coaching infielders and hitters while also serving as the recruiting coordinator. Playing Career: Mantrana was an accomplished player for Miami-Dade College, Middle Georgia Community College and Louisiana State University. He was at Miami-Dade for one year before transferring to Middle Georgia where he helped lead his team to a second-place finish at the Junior College World Series. Mantrana was named to the JCWS All-Tournament team and was MVP of the region tournament as a second baseman. He spent the last two years of his college career at LSU under Hall of Fame coach Skip Bertman. Mantrana was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 10th round of the 1981 MLB Draft as a shortstop out of Jackson High School. Mantrana was drafted another three times during his collegiate career before signing a free agent contract with the Detroit Tigers. Mantrana also played for the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers organizations. Education: Mantrana earned a bachelor s degree in Sports Administration from STU in 1990 and then earned his master s degree in Guidance and Counseling from STU in He has also started and is currently working toward a Doctor of Education in Leadership and Management.
