1 edia Information Media Relations Department 198 Union Avenue Memphis, Tennessee Phone: Memphis Redbirds (18-11) vs. Iowa Cubs (13-14) Saturday, May 6 7:08 p.m. (CT) Principal Park (11,000) Des Moines, Iowa Game #30 Road Game #18 (11-6) RHP Mike Mayers (2-3, 6.08) vs RHP Eddie Butler (1-0, 1.46) THE GAME TODAY S GAME: The Memphis Redbirds continue their eight-game road trip with the series opener against the Iowa Cubs. Memphis has run off a season-high eight wins in a row and is coming off its first four-game sweep since July 7-10, 2016 (Round Rock). Today s game will be broadcast live on Sports56 and 87.7 FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds.com, with Steve Selby on the call. ON THE HILL: Mike Mayers climbs the hill for the Redbirds in today s series opener. The righthander is coming off his best start of the season thus far in his last outing. Facing Round Rock on Monday, Mayers pitched into the seventh inning without allowing a run and yielding just two hits. Mayers faced the Cubs twice last season with great success, going 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA. He allowed only one earned run in 11 innings while striking out 13. Iowa will counter with Eddie Butler, who was activated off the DL (ankle) earlier today. Butler enters today s start fifth in the league in ERA at 1.46 with four strong starts under his belt. His last appearance came on April 21 against New Orleans when he spun a quality start, allowing a run on eight hits in six innings of work in what turned out be a no-decision. He has pitched into the sixth inning in each of his starts and has yet to allow more than two earned runs. SCHEDULE WITH IOWA: The Redbirds and Cubs meet for the first time in 2017 with 16 scheduled meetings overall this season. The two teams split the season series a year ago with each club winning six of eight at their respective ballpark. The Redbirds are 4-12 at Principal Park the last two seasons and overall in Des Moines. Memphis is looking for its first season series victory since 2014 when the Birds were 12-4 against the Cubs. BIRD BITES THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY (May 6, 2002): The Redbirds fourth consecutive scheduled game at Calgary was postponed due to snow and unplayable conditions. It was the final series the Redbirds were scheduled to play in Calgary before the team moved to Albuquerque. Two of the four games of that series were made up later in the month at AutoZone Park, where Memphis and Calgary played six games in four days (MEM went 1-5). THE SEASON ABOUT THE LAST ONE: Arturo Reyes authored a gem and the Redbirds bats provided enough support for a 4-2 win over Omaha Friday night. The win was Memphis eighthstraight and completed a series sweep of the Storm Chasers. Reyes completed eight innings for the fifth time as a pro, allowing just four hits in the process. Todd Cunningham provided a two-run double in the ninth which provided the cushion needed for the victory. WINNING THE WEEK: Memphis has won eight consecutive contests, its longest winning streak since an eight-game stretch from May 30 - June 6, The Redbirds have outscored opponents during the eight-game stretch, limiting the opposition to two runs or fewer five times. The franchise record for wins in a row is nine set by the 2000 squad (April 9-17) and matched again in 2014 (August 9-18). The eight-game winning streak is tied for the thirdlongest in franchise history and it marks the fifth time a Redbird team has won at least eight in a row. OFFENSIVE OASIS: Memphis offense has reached new heights over the past week, pounding out 58 runs on 102 hits for a.333 team average in the last nine games. 2 team s average has increased 28 points during the eight contests from.237 to.265. Prior to this stretch, Memphis had reached doubledigit hits in just six of its first 20 games, something it has now done in six of the last nine games. In the stretch, Memphis has 22 doubles, two triples, and 15 homers, good for a.549 team slugging percentage. TURN THE BEAT AROUND: After registering just one quality start in the first 14 games of the season, Memphis starters have tallied eight quality starts and a complete game in the last 15 contests. Entering a doubleheader on April 21, Memphis starters held a 5.72 ERA (39 ER/61.1 IP) through the first 14 games. Since then, though, Redbirds starters have yielded just 28 ER in 83 IP for a 3.04 ERA. Overall, Memphis team ERA has dropped from 5.09 to 4.27 over the stretch. Perhaps more importantly, Redbirds starters are working deeper into games, averaging 5.53 innings per start over the last 15 games. Comparatively, starters worked an average of 4.38 innings in the season s first 14 games. The shortest start in the last nine games was Arturo Reyes rain-shortened fiveinning complete game on Saturday. BEALE STREET BOMBERS: The Redbirds have made their power presence known at the plate, connecting on a league-leading 34 home runs entering today s game, including 15 in the past nine contests. The Redbirds have reassumed the top spot on the PCL leaderboard and sit second in all of MiLB (Quad Cities, 37) in homers. The Redbirds are way ahead of their pace from a season ago when the squad did not hit its 34th homer until game 51, which came on June 2. A majority (23 of 34) of the long balls this season have been solo blasts. EXTRA, EXTRA: The Redbirds have posted 249 hits in the first 28 games of the season, including 99 extra-base hits (61 doubles, four triples, 34 home runs), which places second in the PCL (Reno, 100). Despite ranking t-10th in the league in hitting (.266), Memphis is fourth in total bases (420) and slugging percentage (.448). RUN, RUN, RUNAWAY: The Redbirds are 15-for- 35 in steal attempts and have been picked off 11 times. The 20 caught stealings are the most in the PCL, with no other squad having been caught more than 13 times (Salt Lake, 39-for-52). Memphis did successfully steal three bases Thursday night, setting a new season high. Memphis has also struggled with controlling the opponents running game, catching just seven of 34 would-be base stealers (20.6%), the third-lowest success rate in the PCL. STARTING OUT QUICK: The Birds have scored 17 runs in the first inning and 18 runs in the second inning of games, which are two of their most fruitful frames of the season (5th, 21). Memphis has scored first in 18 of its initial 29 games this season, which trails only Iowa (19) in terms of times scoring the game s first run. However, the Redbirds are just 12-6 in those contests, which ranks 10th in the league. The Redbirds have scored the game s final run 13 times and are 12-1 in such games, the best mark in the circuit. NEEDING EXTRA TIME: The Redbirds played in their fourth extra-inning game of the season Thursday and remained undefeated in such affairs. Memphis is just one of four PCL teams that remain unbeaten in extrainning games, while the four wins are the most in the circuit. The Birds have out-scored opponents 7-0 in extras this season. WRAPPING UP APRIL: The Redbirds finished the season s first month on an upswing, sitting in first place with a record. It was the first April since 2013, and just the second time in the last eight years, where Memphis finished with a winning record. The Redbirds were 12th in the league in hitting (.257) and ninth in the league in ERA (4.54). HOME COOKING: In 12 games at AutoZone Park this year, Memphis has posted 45 extra-base hits, including 20 home runs. The Redbirds hit 49 homers all of last season at home. The series against Round Rock increased the team s batting average at home by 65 points to.267. Memphis is slugging 80 points better at home (.496) compared to on the road (.416). MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHES MOVING ON UP: The St. Louis Cardinals announced the recall of Tommy Pham to the active roster yesterday, marking the first Memphis Opening Day player to get promoted to the Majors. Pham hit.283 in 25 games for Memphis with four home runs, and led the team in RBI (tie, 19), and runs scored (17). In his place, Nick Martini was transferred from Double-A Springfield. Martini was hitting.263 at the time of his promotion with two homers and 15 RBI. CUNNINGHAM S NEW GROOVE: Todd Cunningham has settled into a nice rhythm with his new organization, currently riding a team season-best nine-game hitting streak. During that stretch, Cunningham is batting.378 (14-for-37, 3 2B, 3B, 8 R, 7 RBI, 8 BB) and has increased his average 119 points to.271. A member of the Angels system a year ago, Cunningham struggled out of the gate, going just 5-for-33 (.152) in his first 16 games. EN FUEGO: Breyvic Valera was a revelation for Memphis a year ago, hitting.341 in 73 games. After a slow start to this year (.193 through 15 games), Valera has found his stroke in his last eight games, going 14-for-29 (.483) in the stretch with two doubles and a triple. Valera has multiple hits in five of his last eight contests after doing so just once in his first 15 games. Last year, he tied for second on the team with 20 multi-hit games. PEARLS OF WISDOM: After a rough stretch on the previous road trip, Patrick Wisdom has returned to his strong hitting with 14 hits in his last nine games, including a pair of three-hit affairs. Six of the 14 hits have gone for extra bases, including four home runs. Wisdom has hit safely in seven consecutive games, increasing his batting average 40 points to.287. STRIKING NEW GROUND: Daniel Poncedeleon and Arturo Reyes have become quite the unexpected 1-2 punch at the top of the Redbirds rotation. Poncedeleon didn t start the season with Memphis and Reyes began the year in a piggyback role. Poncedeleon leads the squad with 24 strikeouts and currently ranks tops among PCL starters (fourth overall) with a.186 opponents average. He is also tied for ninth in the PCL in ERA (2.25). Thanks to his strong eight-inning performance Friday, Reyes is fourth in the league in ERA (1.33), tied for second in wins (4), and third in WHIP (0.85) and opponents average (.173). VOIT OF CONFIDENCE: The St. Louis Cardinals tabbed Luke Voit as the organization s Minor League Player of the Month for April, his second straight month winning the award (August 16 with Springfield). Voit hit.360 with five homers and 16 RBI in 23 April games. Overall, he led the Birds in AVG, H (27), 2B (tie, 7), 3B (tie, 1), HR, OBP (.448), SLG (.680), and OPS (1.128) in April. THE ROSTER: Of the 24 players who comprise Memphis roster, 20 appeared at Triple-A last season, be it with Memphis or another organization. Of those who played at Triple-A, 12 donned a Redbirds uniform. Additionally, the roster is full of Major League experience with nine players combining for 202 games played. PROSPECTING: The Cardinals organization has seen a steady growth in its prospect ranking the last three years, elevating from 15th to 14th to 12th this season, according to Baseball America. While top prospect Alex Reyes is sidelined for the season, five of the top 30 prospects tabbed by the publication are currently on the Redbirds roster. That includes Luke Weaver (#2), Carson Kelly (#4), Harrison Bader (#7), Paul DeJong (#14), and Breyvic Valera (#29). ST. LOUIS MAJORITY: When digging into St. Louis current 25-man roster, 16 players have spent time in Memphis: pitchers Lance Lynn ( ), Carlos Martinez ( ), Kevin Siegrist ( ), Miguel Socolovich ( ), Sam Tuivailala ( ), Michael Wacha (2013), and Adam Wainwright ( , 08); catcher Yadier Molina (2004); infielders Matt Adams (2012, 14, 16), Matt Carpenter ( ), Aledmys Diaz (2015), Greg Garcia ( ), and Kolten Wong ( , 16); and outfielders Randal Grichuk (2014, 16), Jose Martinez (2016), and Tommy Pham ( ). REDBIRDS ALL-TIME ROSTER: Since St. Louis and Memphis signed a player development partnership in 1998, a total of 611 players and coaching staff have appeared on the Redbirds, including this season. Of that number, 252 have played or served in a coaching capacity for the St. Louis Cardinals in their career.
