1 edia Information Media Relations Department 198 Union Avenue Memphis, Tennessee Phone: Memphis Redbirds (61-34) at Oklahoma City Dodgers (51-44) Wednesday, July 19 7:05 p.m. (CT) Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark (13,066) Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Game #96 Road Game #50 (31-18) RH John Gant (1-4, 3.13) vs. RH Scott Barlow (1-1, 8.84) THE GAME TODAY S GAME: After seeing their seven-game winning streak snapped last night, the Memphis Redbirds are back in action in game three of a four-game series at Oklahoma City. The Redbirds have still won 15 of their last 18 games overall and maintain the best record in Triple-A Baseball (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 60-35). The Redbirds have not lost back-to-back games since dropping three-straight June Today s game will be broadcast live on Sports56/87.7 FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds.com, with Steve Selby on the call. ON THE HILL: John Gant gets the call for game three at Oklahoma City, still in search of his first win since June 16 after three-straight losses and two no-decisions. Overall, Gant has not been helped by the Redbirds offense in his 10 starts, as Memphis has scored just 10 total runs while Gant has been in the game this season and one in his last two starts combined spanning 13.0 innings pitched. The righthander has only given up more than three earned runs in a game once this season, and despite being 0-2 in his last four starts he has a 3.12 ERA (9er/26.0ip). Scott Barlow is scheduled to make his fifth start of the season for Oklahoma City and second against the Redbirds. Barlow tossed 6.1 innings June 26 at Memphis, allowing two unearned runs, in his Triple-A debut. Since then, he has given up 18 earned runs in three starts (13.50 ERA), including eight earned runs in each of his last two starts. SCHEDULE WITH OKLAHOMA CITY: The Redbirds and Dodgers are meeting for the final time this season, with Memphis winning the three of the last four games after dropping four-straight in the middle of the season. The Redbirds are 17 games over.500 against the Dodgers at AutoZone Park but 33 games under.500 in Oklahoma City. THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY: In 2014, the Redbirds blanked Colorado Springs in both games of a twinbill, winning 1-0 and 2-0 in the pair of contests. Zach Petrick and Boone Whiting both threw complete-game, seven-inning wins to guide the Birds to the doubleheader sweep. The duo allowed two hits apiece and became the first pitchers in franchise history to toss complete-game, seven-inning shutouts. THE SEASON ABOUT THE LAST ONE: Justin Masterson, a former St. Louis Cardinal, gave up one run on five hits in 7.0 innings in a 4-1 win for Oklahoma City. This came after the righthander shut out Memphis on one hit in 7.0 innings on April 24 in Oklahoma City. Nick Martini had two hits and an RBI for the Redbirds, and Rangel Ravelo had a double. Marco Gonzales saw his fivestart winning streak snapped, after allowing four runs and six hits in 6.0 frames. He helped himself at the plate with a single and a run scored in the third inning, accounting for the Redbirds only run of the night. FOR THE RECORD: - Memphis is 27 games over.500, one shy of a season high-water mark - The Redbirds have the best record through 95 games in franchise history (56-39, 2000) - Memphis enjoys its largest division lead in franchise history (previous: 15.0 games, Aug. 13, 2000) - A win today would be the earliest 62nd win by games in franchise history (107, 2000) - Memphis is one of 4 teams in MiLB with 61+ wins REDBIRDS VS. Memphis has held its opponent to three runs or fewer in 16 of the last 20 games. The Birds have yielded only 130 ER in the last IP (2.85 ERA) and now lead the PCL in ERA (3.60), which would be a franchise record for lowest ERA (3.89, 1998 and 2003). Memphis is the only club in the PCL with a team ERA under IT S NOT JUST ERA: Memphis pitching staff has been one of the more dominant units in the league over the last two months, culminating in a leagueleading 3.16 ERA in June and a 2.49 ERA so far in July. The Redbirds enter today allowing 3.9 runs per game and are have allowed the fewest hits (782, 8.2 per game) in the circuit. Additionally, Memphis pitchers sit second in the league in strikeouts (788, 8.4 K/9) and total walks (249, 2.7 BB/9). SALVAGING THE SPLIT: Saturday s win continued an incredible trend for Memphis when it comes to series records. The Redbirds have now won or split 20-consecutive series (12-0-8) since losing three of four games at Colorado Springs from April Outside of that series and dropping two of three in the previous set to Oklahoma City from April 15-17, Memphis is in series this year. For reference, last year s team won eight series the entire season, finishing with an series record. MEMPHIS MASHERS: Memphis increased its season home run total to 109 with three Monday, tied for fourth-most in the PCL this season. The Redbirds have hit 26 over the last 20 games. Memphis hit 107 all of last season and 97 in The Redbirds have already hit 55 homers at AutoZone Park this season after blasting 51 in The Bluff City all of last year and 49 in STARTING OUT QUICK: The Redbirds have scored 65 runs in the first inning and 49 runs in the second inning of games, outscoring the opposition in the game s first two frames. Memphis has scored first in 59 of its 95 games this season, which is the most in the PCL. The Redbirds are overall in those contests, which is middle of the pack in the league (6th,.678). STOP HITTING ME: The Birds have now been hit 60 times, which is far and away the most in the PCL Nashville, 42). Former Redbird Todd Cunningham was hit 15 times with Memphis, which led the PCL. PROCEED WITH CAUTION: The Redbirds are 46-for- 79 in steal tries this year but have rounded into form recently. After starting the year 18-for-42, Memphis is 28 for its last 37 in attempts. The 46 steals are tied for the second-fewest in the PCL (Las Vegas, 33). IN A PINCH: After starting the year by going 5-for- 24 (.208), Redbirds pinch-hitters are 16 for their last 33 (.485). Overall, pinch-hitters are 21-for-57 (.368) on the season. Ten different players have recorded a pinch hit, led by Rangel Ravelo s five knocks. GOING EXTRA TIME: The Redbirds have excelled in extra-inning games this season, posting a perfect 7-0 record in such contests. Memphis is one of two PCL teams that remain unbeaten in extra-inning games (Colorado Springs 5-0), while the seven wins are the most in the circuit. The Birds have outscored the opposition 11-1 in extras this year. AMONG THE ORGANIZATION: The Redbirds pepper the Cardinals full-season minor league affiliate leaderboard in multiple categories: - AVG: Ad. Garcia (4th,.304), Martini (5th,.301), Bader (6th,.298) - HR: Wisdom (1st, 20), Bader (2nd, 18) - RBI: Wisdom (1st, 61), Martini (4th, 47) - Wins: Pearce (t-1, 9), Flaherty (t-2, 8) - ERA: Flaherty (3rd, 2.28), Pearce (7th, 3.18) - Saves: Lucas (3rd, 7) - Strikeouts: Flaherty (1st, 99) CHANGE IN CULTURE: Memphis finds itself with the best record in the league thanks to winning in a variety of ways. After leading the league in homers in April (29), the Birds were t-8th in blasts in June (31). Meanwhile, the pitching staff, which ranked 10th in the league in ERA in April (4.54), rose to second in May (3.84), was the league s best in June (3.16), and is the best again so far in July (2.49). WRAPPING UP JUNE: The Redbirds completed June by going 17-10, increasing their division lead by 7.5 games. It marked the best month of June recordwise for the franchise since 2011 (19-10) and thirdbest record in the PCL this year. Memphis blasted 31 home runs, its most in any month since August 2014 (36), and most in June since 2008 (37). The Redbirds pitching staff posted a remarkable 3.16 ERA, tied for the second-best monthly mark in the PCL this season (Oklahoma City, 2.93 in April). MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHES MIDSEASON HONOREES: Carson Kelly and Ryan Sherriff represented the Redbirds at the Triple-A All- Star Game in Tacoma, with Luke Weaver selected but unable to play due to a promotion to St. Louis. Kelly started at catcher and singled, and Sherriff had a key strikeout in the ninth to help the PCL win. In addition, Jack Flaherty participated in the MLB Futures Game during All-Star festivities in Miami. Flaherty allowed two runs in the sixth inning but added a strikeout. VERY GOOD, VALERA: Breyvic Valera has hit in 11 of his last 13 games (.375, 18-48) and 18 of his last 25 (.356, 32-90). After an 8-for-48 skid (.167) over 16 games dropped his average from.292 to.259, he is back at.291 after these 25 games. FULL MONTY: Mark Montgomery tossed a perfect inning Sunday, continuing his tremendous campaign. Montgomery leads league relievers in fewest baserunners/9 IP (8.38), just ahead of teammate Ryan Sherriff, while also leading league relievers in lowest opponents average (.175). He has allowed runs in only nine of his 33 outings, and has posted a sub-3.00 ERA in each month. TWO (OR THREE) OLIVES: Nick Martini has posted 11 multi-hit games in his last 22 starts (32-for-86,.372, 12 R, 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 13 RBI), and has hit safely in 13 of his last 18 starts. After suffering through a 2-for-24 skid from June 7-16, Martini has reached base safely in 21 of the last 25 games. Despite joining the Redbirds one month into the season, Martini is third on the team with 20 multi-hit games. A NEW SHERRIFF IN TOWN: All-Star Ryan Sherriff has been one of the most heavily used relievers in the PCL this season, appearing in 36 games, tied for seventh-most in the league. Despite the heavy workload, the southpaw is second among league relievers in fewest baserunners allowed per 9 IP (8.56) and opponent batting average (.212) and third in lowest walk rate per 9 IP (1.32). Eight of the 14 runs Sherriff has allowed this year have come in two of his outings. Aside from that, Sherriff has a 1.42 ERA (6er/38.1ip). PROSPECTS ON THE MOUND: With the addition of Jack Flaherty from Double-A Springfield and the return of Luke Weaver from the Cardinals, the Redbirds currently possess three of the top starting pitching prospects in the St. Louis organization (BA/ MLB.com rank) in Weaver (#2/#3), Flaherty (#11/#5), Marco Gonzales (#13/#19). All three were selected in the first round of their respective drafts: Gonzales (19th, 13), Weaver (27th, 14) and Flaherty (34th, 14) and join Mike Mayers (93rd, 13) as top 110 picks on the staff. PROSPECTING: The Cardinals organization has seen a steady growth in its prospect ranking the last three years, elevating from 15th to 14th to 12th this season, according to Baseball America. While top prospect Alex Reyes is sidelined for the season, six of the top 30 prospects tabbed by the publication are currently on the Redbirds roster. That includes Carson Kelly (#4), Harrison Bader (#7), Jack Flaherty (#11), Marco Gonzales (#13), John Gant (#27) and Breyvic Valera (#29). A BAKER S DOZEN: Luke Weaver became the 12th different Redbird to join the big league club this year, and Jose Martinez was the 13th despite not playing a game for Memphis. Of the 13 players, seven (Brebbia, DeJong, Grichuk, Martinez, Pham, Tuivailala, Voit) still remain with the Cardinals as of today. THE ROSTER: Of the 25 players who comprise Memphis active roster, 21 appeared at Triple-A last season, be it with Memphis or another organization.
