Winter Haven, Fla. ^ Corridor Classic, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 1 UNI Baseball THIS WEEK IN PANTHER BASEBALL The University of Northern Iowa baseball team will open Missouri Valley Conference play when it starts a three-game series at Southern Illinois on Friday. The Panthers are coming off a win over Indiana in Winter Haven, Fla. UNI matched the school record for runs scored in a game, and the Panthers tallied 28 hits in the victory. Travis Bennett, James Dinizo and Levi Ferguson each collected five hits in the game. UNI has four batters hitting better than.300 on the season. Along with Dinizo (.383), Bennett (.382) and Ferguson (.341), Jason Summers is hitting at a.378 clip this year. The Panther pitching staff has put together a 5.63 ERA. Zach Zirbel has a 0.75 ERA on the season, giving up just one earned run in eight relief appearances. Nick Kirk has a 2.77 ERA and a 2-1 record for the Panthers. Kirk leads UNI with 27 strike outs in 26.0 innings. Shuhei Fujiya leads UNI with four saves on the year, striking out 11 in 6.2 innings and holding opponents to a.160 average. The Salukis are coming off a two-game split at Middle Tennessee, winning the first game 9-4 but dropping the second Southern Illinois is 7-13 on the year, and they are 4-6 in games at Abe Martin Field. Chris Serritella leads the Salukis with a.389 average, and Aaron Roberts is hitting.347 on the year. Chris Murphy is hitting.305 on the year with two home runs and 14 RBIs, and Mark Kelly has a.440 slugging percentage with 25 hits on the year, including six doubles and two home runs. The SIU pitching staff has a 5.87 ERA, led by a 3.63 mark from Andrew Dunn. Dunn is 3-2 on the season. Jimmy Cornell leads SIU with 19 strikeouts in 17.0 innings pitched. The Salukis won the series last season, claiming games two and three after the Panthers won the opener. SIU also topped UNI 5-3 in the first game of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Levi Ferguson raised his season batting average by.230 points on the trip to Florida, improving to.341 on the season. The sophomore collected 12 hits in those five games, including a five-hit effort against Indiana and a four-hit game against Miami (Ohio). Deric Manrique enters the week six stolen bases shy of tying the UNI career mark of 65. He has tallied 59 career stolen bases, including 30 in 2007 when he led the MVC in that category. He is 11-of-11 in stolen base attempts this season. UNI will play its first 20 games away from Riverfront Stadium.

2 Head Coach Rick Heller 10th Season UNI Record Career Record Upper Iowa, 1986 Rick Heller is in his 10th season as the head baseball coach at the University of Northern Iowa. During his tenure, he has recorded more than 200 victories, one MVC championship, an NCAA Regional berth, and three 30-win seasons. Heller has developed the program into a conference contender while coaching three MVC Most Valuable Players and one MVC Pitcher of the Year. Since Heller s arrival in 2000, the school record books virtually have been rewritten. Fifty team and individual records have been set in the past eight years. The Panthers have accquired a strong tradition as one of the best offensive teams in the conference as well as the country since Heller signed on. In Heller s nine years, UNI has led the league in hitting three times, including being ranked 10th nationally in 2001 with a.333 average. The Panthers were sixth in the nation in stolen bases with 130 in The team has averaged more than seven runs per game in three of the nine years he has been at the helm. In 2003, Adam Boeve led the league in RBI and home runs and finished second in batting en route to becoming the second MVC Player of the Year during Heller s tenure. Team hitting is not the only thing that has improved since Heller s arrival. UNI s earned run average has lowered in five of Heller s years with the 2006 ERA being the best in school history. The club s strikeout to walk ratio has improved nearly every season since The 2003 and 2004 Panther squads also put together the top two defensive teams in school history with an overall fielding percentage of.964 both seasons. 3 UNI is led at the plate by a trio of newcomers, freshman James Dinizo and junior college transfers Jason Summers and Travis Bennett. Dinizo leads UNI with a.383 average, and Bennett is hitting.382 with a.588 slugging percentage and 23 RBIs. Summers is hitting.378 on the year. UNI tied the school record with 28 runs scored against Indiana on March 16. Three different Panthers (James Dinizo, Levi Ferguson and Travis Bennett) notched five hits in the game. UNI went 28-of-54 from the plate as a team in that contest. UNI has already notched two impressive come-from-behind victories. UNI trailed 4-1 going into the eighth inning in the second game against UALR. The Panther tallied seven hits in the final two frames, scoring three runs in each inning to edge the Trojans, 7-6. Trailing 5-1 against Centenary, UNI scored six runs in the final three innings to take a 7-5 win over the Gents. Jason Summers hit.429 with eight RBIs, a home run and two doubles at Southeast Missouri State. The junior college transfer finished the week with a.786 slugging percentage, and he drew three walks for a.529 on-base percentage. Junior Grant Grgurich was hit by a pitch six times through UNI s first seven games. Senior Deric Manrique notched his fifth career four-hit game against Centenary on March 1, going 4-of-5 from the plate with a triple. When Jack Larner hit a home run in the bottom of the second inning in UNI s season opener, he became the first player to take one out of the park against UNI senior Nick Kirk. Kirk had thrown innings before giving up a home run. The junior college transfer went 3-of-11 from the plate with a home run and a double to finish with a.636 slugging percentage and five RBIs. He has eight total hits on the season, four of them coming for extra bases. He leads UNI with two home runs and 10 RBIs. Senior Brett Douglas was named to the preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference team as a utility player. Douglas hit.302 as a junior. The Panthers got a lot of help from their newcomers in their first series. Fourteen of UNI s 21 hits came from players who were not on the active roster in Seven pitchers took the mound for the first time in their Panther careers in the opening series at UALR. That group included Colin Rea, who earned the win against the Trojans after throwing 2.1 innings of relief in the second game.
