1 MEDIA INFORMATION Wilmington Blue Rocks (33-25) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals vs. Winston-Salem Dash (24-33) Carolina League Affiliate of the Chicago White Sox Game No. 59 Road Game No. 27 BB&T Ballpark Wednesday, June 10, :00 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: 23-9 AWAY: STREAK: L2 LAST 5: 3-2 LAST 10: 6-4 BREAK OUT THE BROOMS: The Blue Rocks road woes continued on Tuesday night, as Wilmington dropped a pair of games to the Winston-Salem Dash at BB&T Ballpark in North Carolina. The good news is that with the Frederick Keys splitting their doubleheader with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Tuesday, the Blue Crew s magic number to clinch a Carolina League North first-half crown dropped to eight, as Wilmington holds a five-game edge with 12 games remaining. The setbacks also ended the Rocks season-high tying six-game winning streak. THERE S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Blue Rocks are next to impossible to beat at home this season, but have struggled outside of the First State. Wilmington is a Carolina-League best 14 games above.500 at Frawley Stadium (23-9) in That success has more than made up for the fact that the Rocks are on the road, where the biggest difference has been the pitching. Rocks hurlers are throwing to a 2.34 ERA in 32 games at home, while that mark balloons to 3.74 in 26 away games. Nine of Wilmington s 12 remaining contests in the season s first half will come in hostile territory, including four against the second-place Keys in Frederick. ROUGH ROAD THROUGH THE BOTTOM: Game one was very unkind to the lower half of the Blue Rocks batting order. In the opening contest of Tuesday s doubleheader, the five-through-nine hitters in Wilmington s order went a combined 0-for-15 with two strikeouts. That part of the lineup consisted of Frank Schwindel, Dexter Kjerstad, Cam Gallagher, Logan Moon, and Dominique Taylor. That group includes the Carolina League leader in doubles (Schwindel) and the Royals Advanced-A organizational Player of the Month in May (Kjerstad). All the offense came from the top four in the lineup (Carlos Garcia, Jack Lopez, Cody Stubbs, and Mauricio Ramos), who went a combined 4-for-9, accounting for all three runs in the contest. In game two the Rocks got four walks, two hits and a run scored from the bottom five hitters in Brian Buchanan s lineup. STUBBS SMASHING: Cody Stubbs has only played in 10 games this season since returning from extended spring training after an injury delayed the start of his campaign, but he has certainly made his presence felt in the middle of the Blue Rocks order. After Tuesday s doubleheader, Stubbs is batting.500 (18-for-36) with a homer, six doubles, three RBIs, and seven runs. He has also now hit safely in all 10 of his games this season, which eclipses the old high for a hitting streak by a Blue Rock in Frank Schwindel s nine-game streak from April 22 to May 1 was the previous high, making Stubbs the only Rock to reach double-digits this year. Stubbs also spent 2014 in Wilmington and led the Rocks with 10 home runs a season ago. TRIPLE THE PLEASURE: In the bottom of the sixth inning of Tuesday s nightcap, Wilmington turned an around-the-horn triple play, the second completed this season by the Rocks. The first triple play came on April 19 against Frederick at Frawley Stadium, a game which the Rocks won by a score of 4-3. The triple play was also the third in two seasons for Wilmington, and the second in as many years against the Dash. The Blue Crew turned three against Winston-Salem on July 27, 2014 at Frawley Stadium. That was a game the Rocks also lost, falling 6-1 to the Dash. THEY SAID IT, INFIELDER JACK LOPEZ: I m keeping my confidence up (at the plate) (I m) just going out there and battling every at-bat. In my second game, I got three strikeouts, but it s part of the game. I m not going to get two or three hits every game. (I ll just) go out there and try to help the team, and just get back here tomorrow and work hard to get another (win)...(getting hits) is what they have me here to do. I always hit in the first or second spot in the lineup, and I m kind of the set-up guy for the middle of the lineup. That s part of my job. I know during the first month or so I wasn t having too much luck, but now I m able to turn it around little by little and (if) I just keep on working hard, I ll get where I want it to be...i haven t had too much good luck the last couple days on defense. I had a couple bad hops, a ball that got away That s part of baseball. Nine out of 10 ground balls, I ll make the play behind my pitchers, and that s what I want. I want the pitchers to have confidence in me, and I ll be out there to have their back 24/7...I think we were all shocked (on the triple play). We all thought (Cleuluis Rondon) was going to bunt, and he worked a 3-2 count It s funny, because (Mauricio) Ramos (told Ramon) Torres on the pitch before get ready, if it s a ground ball to me, I m going to step (on the base) and go to you, and it just worked out that same way...we can (feel clinching a playoff berth is close). The vibe in the locker room is awesome. Even though we lost, you can go in there and everybody still has their head up, knowing we re going to be alright. We have a couple days left (until) the second half, and we ve got to keep working hard, not worry too much about clinching. We ve just got to do what we can do, taking care of our job, and everything will take care of itself in time...i can t (say why we re much better at home than on the road). Like I said, that s part of baseball. At least we do play good at home. If we don t play too good on the road we get to go home and do our job, and get a (win) for the fans. Not only for the fans, but also for us, and kind of boost our confidence. Today s Starters WIL: LHP Eric Skoglund (4-2, 2.82) vs. WS: RHP Jake Cose (2-1, 2.10) Eric Skoglund gets the start tonight for the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Skoglund, a native of Sarasota, Florida, was originally a 16th round pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of high school, but chose to attend the University of Central Florida instead. His final season in college was his best, as he went 9-3 with a 2.54 ERA in 15 starts (including three complete games). After his final season at school in 2014, he was drafted by the Royals in the third round that same year. Skoglund enters 2015 as the 14th best prospect in the Kansas City system according to Baseball America, featuring a fastball, changeup, and slider. Skoglund s last outing was a strange one, back on June 4 against Frederick. He allowed five runs in the first inning, including a grand slam, but pitched five scoreless frames after that. Overall he yielded those five runs on five hits, a walk, and he struck out three. His offense scored seven unanswered runs to give him the win, as the game was called with one out in the top of the seventh inning due to rain. Jake Cose takes the ball tonight for the Winston-Salem Dash. Cose was born in Manteca, California, and played collegiately at San Joaquin Delta Junior College in his home state, the same school that produced major leaguers Eddie Guardado and Phil Coke. The righty only made four starts in his final season in college, but he won them all. After his time in school, Cose was taken in the 27th round of the 2011 draft by the White Sox. He spent some time with Winston-Salem back in 2013, making 17 starts for the Dash. He pitched to a 7-5 record and a 4.16 ERA, including the only complete game of his career on July 30 of that year against Myrtle Beach. He only went six innings and got the loss in that game. Cose missed the entire 2014 season due to injury, and started this year late, making his 2015 debut on May 6. Cose has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his five starts this season. His last time out came on May 28 against the Hillcats. Cose got the win that day, as he tossed five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out a season-high seven batters Regular-Season Series: WIL vs. WS Date Site Result WP LP Save 5-1 WIL W, 6-1 Green (2-0) Bucciferro (1-2) None 5-2 WIL L, 2-0 Heidenreich (4-0) Reed (2-2) Ynoa (1) 5-3 WIL W, 4-1 Mills (1-1) Dykstra (3-1) Cordero (1) 5-4 WIL W, 4-3 Skoglund (2-1) Fry (1-4) Yambati (6) 5-19 WIL W, 2-1 (12) Alvarez (1-1) Isler (0-1) None 5-20 WIL W, 6-0 Reed (4-2) Fry (1-6) None 5-21 WIL L, 2-0 R. Esmay spent eight years coaching at the University of Utah before returning to his Alma Mater, Arizona State. He joined the Sun Devils as an assistant coach back in 2005, a position he held for five seasons. Prior to the 2010 campaign, Esmay was named the program s head coach, another position he held for five years. During his time at ASU (where he also played collegiately) he led his squad to four NCAA regional tournament berths until being replaced by Tracy Smith, the former skipper at Indiana. Lots of Promise: Despite the fact that the Dash enter the series as the worst team in the Carolina League, they are loaded with top prospects that provide lots of hope for the future. Their highest rated prospect according to Baseball America is infielder Trey Michalczewski, who occupies the number eight spot per BA s rankings. Other top 30 prospects in the White Sox farm system on the Dash include Jace Fry (13), Cleuluis Rondon (16), Brandon Brennan (21), Adam Engel (23), Jake Peter (24), James Dykstra (25), Keon Barnum (26), and Michael Ynoa (28). Four of these young men are pitchers, four are infielders, and Engel is the lone outfielder on the list. During his time at Mason City High School in Iowa, the 22-year-old was a member of the basketball, football, and track and field programs in addition to being a baseball player. Peter s true calling is on the diamond, though, and he was a major stand out as a prep star. Peter was voted the Player of the Year in the state of Iowa back in 2011 by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. Before heading off to Creighton University, Peter set numerous records at his high school. The single-season marks he holds include home runs (13), walks (31), and saves (six). The career records Peter claims are hits (206), RBIs (126), home runs (21), runs (187), doubles (56), and saves (10). Early Success: While Winston-Salem pitcher Jace Fry might call the professional ranks home nowadays, he got a taste of the game s big stage much earlier. Fry was a member of the Beaverton, Oregon Little League team that placed third in the Little League World Series back in Representing the Northwest Region, Fry s squad got through pool play with a 2-1 record. After winning their opener in the elimination round 4-3 over the Great Lakes team, they fell 7-3 to the Southeast region (the eventual champion). Their consolation game against Matamoros, Mexico was cancelled due to rain, and both teams shared third place that year.

3 TONIGHT S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER #25 LHP Eric Skoglund Acquired: Selected in the 3rd round of the June 2014 Amateur Draft Born: October 26, 1992 in Sarasota, FL Age: 22 Resides: Sarasota, FL Ht: 6-6 Wt: 170 College: Univ. of Central Florida Bats/Throws: Left/Left Pitch Repertoire: Fastball, Changeup, Slider Eric Skoglund: comes into his sophomore year in the pros as the number 14 prospect in the Kansas City Royals organization according to Baseball America. The tall, lanky left-hander features three pitches, all of which he can throw for strikes. He throws his fastball in the low-90s cosnsitently, which is why he is projected as a back-end starter as of right now. Scouting reports say that if he can gain a little weight, he will probably up the velocity and, therefore, up his value in the organization. He struggled in his first foray in pro ball last season at Rookie-Level Idaho Falls where he gave up 30 hits in just 26.0 innings. Skoglund turned things around this season at Advanced- A, where he has kept the hit totals down for the most part. He has allowed 54 hits in 60.2 innings pitched. Last Time Out: Skoglund s last start (arguably the most bizaare game of the season not just for Skoglund, but for the team in general) came on June 4 against Frederick. In the opener of a four-game series at Frawley, the lefty allowed five runs in the top of the first inning, including a grand slam by Brenden Webb. The slam was the first by a Rocks opponent all year. After his brutal first, however, Skoglund settled down. Even though he didn t have his best stuff, Skoglund gutted out six innings, allowing only those five runs in the first. He also yielded five hits, a walk, a hit batsman, and he struck out three. Meanwhile, his offense slowly began to chip away at the 5-0 deficit. With Wilmington down 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Frank Schwindel came up with a two-run double, spelling the end of the night for Keys starter David Hess. He would be replaced by Austin Urban, who promptly served up a two-run homer to the first batter he faced, Dexter Kjerstad, that gave the Rocks the lead for the first time at 6-5. His very next pitch hit Jack Lopez in the ribs, and Urban was immediately tossed. Wilmington would plate another run in the six, and the game was called due to rain after Estarlin Cordero got one out in the seventh. Sorry, Pitt.: Skoglund was originally drafted in the 16th round of the amateur draft out of high school by the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he turned down their offer in favor of playing collegiately at the University of Central Florida. In his three years at Central Florida, Skoglund upped his weight for a lean 170, to a slightly beefier 200. He earned American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year honors his junior year. He went 9-3 with a 2.54 ERA in 15 starts, which included three complete games and a shutout. He led the Knights in innings pitched by a hefty margin, hurling over 30 innings more than the next closest pitcher on the roster. Later that year, he was drafted in the 3rd round by the Royals where he would sign. They Said It (Skoglund on transitioning to professional baseball): I always set my standards extremely high. Most importantly I just want to come out here, have fun, enjoy the moment, and throw strikes. Something I learned through college was don t worry so much about the numbers and stats, that stuff will come if you enjoy the game...it s awesome to have [college and high school awards] but it s a new ballgame. [I am] a professional now and everyone is extremely good at what they do. You ve got to buckle down and really work hard and that s what it comes down to...i don t think I was mentally and physically mature enough [for the 2011 Draft]. I thought I got the education as well as the three years of college baseball that really helped. Philly Fanatic: Blue Rocks fans from the Delaware Valley may be happy to hear that Skoglund models his game after Phillies great Cole Hamels. Skoglund, a lefty like Hamels, said that he admires Hamel s ability to throw any of his pitches for strikes, which is something he also prides himself on. Along with Hamels, Skoglund also idolized Greg Maddux growing up. Skoglund said he strives to be as efficient as Maddux was, while also emulating his intensity. Complete, But Not Quite: On May 29, Skoglund recorded the first complete game of his professional career as he worked eight innings against Potomac, but his first complete game did not add a win to his career totals. Skoglund suffered a loss in a 3-1 P-Nats victory. Still, Skoglund has proven that he can give the Rocks length this season. He was the first Rocks hurler to get through seven innings in a game back on April 29, but he was not the first Rock to hurl a complete game in Alec Mills was the first to do it in a seven-inning game on May 27 against Potomac Appearances The Book on Eric (2015) At Home: 3-0, 2.83 On the Road: 1-2, 2.81 LH Opp Avg:.230 RH Opp Avg:.245 Record when he pitches: 4-2 Wilmington Record when he starts: 6-4 Run Support (overall): 3.9 Run Support (starting): 3.9 ERA: 2.82 Season-High K s: Career-High K s: Last Win: Last Loss: Most IP, 2015: Most IP, Career: 10, 5-16 at Lynchburg 10 ( ) at Lynchburg 6-4 vs Frederick 5-29 at Potomac 8.0 (5-29) at Potomac 8.0 ( ) at Potomac Career Numbers Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP 2014 (Idaho Falls) (Wilmington) Totals Date OPP G GS DEC ERA IP H R ER BB SO HR HBP WP Score Upon Exit Result Notes Apr. 1 1 W WIL 3-0 W, 5-0 Season debut Apr. 18 FRE 1 1 ND FRE 3-2 W, 4-3 Was on the hook to lose Apr. 1 1 L FRE 5-3 L, 7-5 First loss of 2015 Apr. 29 MB 1 1 ND WIL 1-0 L, 2-1 First 7IP app. by Wilmington pitcher May 4 WS 5 5 W WIL 4-2 W, 4-3 First win at home May 11 LYN 6 6 ND WIL 6-3 L, 11-7 (11) Shortest outing of the season May 7 7 ND W, 4-3 Struck out career-high 10 batters May 23 CAR 8 8 W WIL 1-0 W, 1-0 Second consecutive no-run outing May 9 9 L POT 3-1 L, 3-1 First career complete-game Jun. 4 FRE W WIL 7-5 W, 7-5 Gave up first grand slam of season

Coming out of Spring Training, I felt like I swung the bat well down in Arizona. I got here by just taking it a day at a time, trying to be professional, working on my routine, and just see-ball-hit-ball and keep it as simple as possible. I plan to follow that. It s still baseball no matter where you re playing at...one of my favorite players of all-time is Edgar Martinez. I try to model my approach [after him].
