1 MEDIA INFORMATION Wilmington Blue Rocks (53-63, 15-31) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals vs. Potomac Nationals (54-62, 21-25) Carolina League Affiliate of the Washington Nationals Game No. 117 Road Game No. 61 Pfitzner Stadium Friday, August 14, :05 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: AWAY: STREAK: L2 LAST 5: 1-4 LAST 10: 1-9 THE STRUGGLES CONTINUE: In painful fashion, the Wilmington Blue Rocks lost another extra-innings affair on Thursday night in front of a big crowd at Frawley Stadium. Starter Jakob Junis gave up two runs in the first frame against Carolina, but he battled and ended up getting through six without allowing another run. The Rock tied it and forced extras, but the Mudcats were aided by a controversial call as a ball hooking down the line was called fair and brought in two runs against reliever Yender Caramo. The Rocks had the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the tenth but could push across just one run and fell 4-3. SERIES STRUGGLES: With Thursday s loss, the Rocks lost yet another series. It has been quite some time since Wilmington came away with a series win, with their last one occurring in a three-game set lasting from July 7 through July 9 against Frederick. The Blue Crew has dropped its last 10 series, and 17 overall on the season. For Wilmington, their next series win will be their 12th. Thursday was also the rubber match for the Rocks and Mudcats, and as a result of the defeat, Wilmington now sits at 4-6 in rubber matches during the 2015 campaign. GETTING IN POSITION: The Rocks had their fair share of opportunities to score runs on Thursday, but struggled mightily with runners in scoring position. Wilmington put together a 2-for-21 showing with runners on second and/or third base against Carolina, which comes out to a.095 batting average. The struggles lasted the entire series for the Blue Crew, as they went 5-for-35 (.143) against the Mudcats over the course of the three-game set. As a result of Thursday s action, the Blue Rocks are now batting.258 with runners in scoring position on the season. LONGEST LOSING STREAK IN TEAM HISTORY: The 14-game losing streak the Blue Rocks ended on Tuesday was the longest in franchise history and one of the six longest in the history of the Carolina League. The previous club-high in terms of consecutive defeats was 10, which the Blue Crew had done twice previously. The most recent such occurrence came in Over the course of the losing streak, Wilmington batted.225 (97-for-432), and scored just 32 times in those 14 losses. The Rocks eclipsed Carolina with Saturday s setback for the longest losing streak in the Carolina League in The league-record for consecutive defeats is held by the Peninsula Pilots, who dropped 22 straight in TRIPLE THE PLEASURE: On August 4 Wilmington turned its third triple play of the season. Myrtle Beach s Victor Caratini popped out to Humberto Arteaga with runners on first and second, and with both runners being unaware that the ball was caught, the Rocks were able to collect two force outs to get the tri-killing. The first time the Blue Crew turned three this year was on April 19 in a game against Frederick at Frawley Stadium. They also turned three on June 9 at Winston-Salem. The trio of triple plays are a franchise record for most in a single season. Perhaps most amazing is the fact that the team turned four triple plays in a 373-day span. Prior to that stretch, Wilmington had retired three on the same play only twice in the previous 16 seasons. THEY SAID IT BENCH COACH BRIAN BOCOCK: We had a chance but with games like that you want the middle of your order up with runners on for a chance to take the lead. We had that opportunity but we just came up a little short. (Mauricio Ramos) is probably one of our best hitters. He s our three-hole hitter and the game is on the line, I m not going to give him a take there. I m going to trust him to get a pitch he can handle. He might have got a little over-aggressive, but you have to give the best hitter in your lineup a chance. You get your middle of the order guys up, you ve got to let them swing. I think we re doing alright. We re battling and we re getting our work in. (Losing) is part of it, that s what the minors are for. You ve got to learn to go through stretches like this. It s unfortunate. You don t want to and it s no fun, but it is part of the game. We ve just got to figure out a way to get back on track. I think they re okay as a whole. THEY SAID IT PITCHER YENDER CARAMO (TRANSLATION FROM SANTIAGO NESSY): I was looking for a ground ball (in the tenth). When it was hit back to me I jumped and got it bare-handed. I didn t even think about it. I saw that the guy on third was still on the base so I tried to turn a double play and make the inning quicker. I saw the ball (hit by Krietemeier) was foul. If the umpire says it was a fair ball then it s a fair ball. There s nothing you can do about it. I made a good pitch, I hit the spot, and the guy just hit the ball. I got a lazy fly ball down the line. Upcoming Probable Starters and Schedule Today s Starters WIL: RHP Pedro Fernandez (0-2, 10.38) vs. POT: RHP Austen Williams (3-3, 2.48) Signed as a 16-year-old by Kansas City in 2011, Pedro Fernandez dominated the Dominican Summer League and the Arizona Rookie League during his first two years as a pro, turning in a pair of sub-two earned run averages. His performance was so impressive that the Royals elected to send the then 20-year-old to Low-A Lexington for the second half of the 2014 season. It was an aggressive path, and one that brought some adversity Fernandez s way. He lost eight of his nine decisions for the Legends and posted a 4.99 ERA in 16 games (eight starts). In spite of those numbers Fernandez still entered the season as Kansas City s 19th-ranked prospect, according to Baseball America. Scouts love his fastball, which sits and can touch 97 when Fernandez needs something extra. The right-hander started this season in Lexington where he rebounded to go 6-2 with a 3.12 ERA in 18 games (13 starts) with the Legends. He allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits in a loss to Carolina during his Advanced-A debut. In his second outing with Wilmington, Fernandez was dealing through four innings allowing just one hit. In the fifth, however, the Hillcats rallied to score seven runs off of Fernandez and company (six runs charged to the righty). Austen Williams out of Ft. Worth, Texas was a sixth round pick by the Nationals in the 2014 amateur draft out of Texas State. Despite being a professional for less than two seasons, Williams has already made an appearance as high as Triple-A. The righthander was a wins machine with Low-A Hagerstown and was selected to the South Atlantic League All-Star team before getting the call to Potomac. He made one spot start with Triple-A Syracuse but struggled giving up five earned in four innings. Williams did not start pitching until his senior year at Southwest Christian High School. He began his career as a reliever at Texas State before moving into a starting role his junior year. He has a fastball with sidearm run that sits in the mid-90s with a changeup and slider to compliment the heater Regular-Season Series: WIL vs. POT Date Site Result WP LP Save 4-20 WIL L, 3-1 Pivetta (1-1) Junis (1-2) Bacus (2) 4-21 WIL L, 6-0 Rauh (2-0) Reed (2-1) None 4-22 WIL W, 6-3 Green (1-0) Schwartz (0-2) Yambati (4) 5-5 POT PPD 5-6 POT PPD 5-7 POT L, 2-1 Lopez (1-0) Rico (2-1) Bacus (3) 5-7 POT W, 3-1 Caramo (1-1) Pivetta (1-3) Green (1) 5-12 WIL L, 2-0 Lopez (2-0) Caramo (1-2) Lee (1) 5-13 WIL W, 3-2 (10) Cordero (2-0) Johansen (1-2) None 5-14 WIL W, 1-0 Reed (3-2) Giolito (0-2) Farrell (2) 5-27 POT W, 3-1 Mills (3-3) Spann (0-5) None 5-27 POT W, 5-1 Rico (3-2) Johansen (1-4) None 5-28 POT L, 8-3 Simms (2-4) Caramo (2-3) Suero (1) 5-29 POT L, 3-1 Self (1-0) Skoglund (3-2) Lee (5) 6-25 WIL W, 6-4 Goudeau (3-1) Mapes (1-1) McCarthy (3) 6-26 WIL W, 5-1 Strahm (1-0) Lopez (4-4) None 6-27 WIL PPD 7-4 POT L, 3-2 Amlung (1-0) McCarthy (3-2) None 7-5 POT L, 3-1 Pivetta (7-4) Mills (6-4) Mapes (1) 7-6 POT W, 2-1 (10) Goudeau (4-3) Self (1-2) None 8-14 POT 8-15 POT 8-16 POT 8-18 WIL 8-19 WIL 8-20 WIL Saturday, Aug. 15 at POT 6:35 p.m. LHP Luis Rico (5-8, 4.28) vs. RHP Brian Rauh (2-1, 2.21) WGLS-FM 89.7 Sunday, Aug. 16 at POT 6:05 p.m. RHP Zach Lovvorn (2-3, 4.02) vs. LHP Matthew Spann (1-6, 4.38) WGLS-FM 89.7 Monday, Aug. 17 SCHEDULED OFF DAY RADIO: Rowan Radio, 89.7 WGLS-FM WEBCAST: wgls.rowan.edu or bluerocks.com Wilmington Blue Rocks Game Notes

Keister started his managerial career in 2012 with the GCL Nationals would be the only year Keister s team went under.500 (27-33). He led the Hagerstown Suns of the South Atlantic League to 80 wins in 2013 and finished the regular season in 2014 with a record. Isaac Ballou put together a solid first half for the Nationals this season, but athletic success is nothing new to him. Back in high school, Ballou wasn t just intimidating opposing pitchers. When attending Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in his home-state of Virginia, Ballou was All-Conference and All-State in both baseball and basketball. He was an All- Virginia selection in basketball for all four years he attended the school. In 2008, he was honored as the TCIS Football Player of the Year as well. He finished his high school career as the school s leading scorer in basketball (2,132 points). After high school, Ballou attended Marshall, where he continued to standout. A four-year starter, Ballou holds schoolrecords in career triples, triples in a season, career walks, and walks in a season, while he is second all-time in Marshall history for stolen bases (64). It is no secret that elbow injuries have become a big problem for pitchers. So much so that Tommy John has become a household name for hurlers. If you ask Potomac catcher Spencer Kieboom, he may tell you it s a problem for catchers too. Kieboom underwent Tommy John surgery prior to the 2013 season, which forced him to miss most of the year. The problem arose during a simple long toss session in his home state of Georgia when he felt some pain in his elbow. Two weeks after that session, Kieboom was unable to throw and was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. Kieboom joined his teammate, and then roommate, Lucas Giolito in the infirmary, as both were recipients of Tommy John surgery in the same year. Already this season, Potomac was graced with the presence of Jayson Werth who went 1-for- 6 in three games at Advanced-A with a solo homer. Wilmington already faced MLB rehabber Casey Janssen this season. Janssen pitched a inning against the Rocks. Last season, the Blue Rocks had to face Gio Gonzalez who they roughed up for eight runs in 3.2 innings in a losing effort. Bryce Harper also made his way to Potomac last season where he played in two games, collecting a homer and four RBIs as well as a couple of walks.

3 TONIGHT S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER #37 RHP Pedro Fernandez Acquired: Signed as undrafted free agent September 2, 2011 Born: May 25, 1994 in Puerto Plata, D.R. Age: 21 Resides: Puerto Plata, D.R. Ht: 6-0 Wt: 175 College: None Bats/Throws: Right/Right Pitch Repertoire: Fastball, Changeup, Slider PEDRO FERNANDEZ: Signed as a 16-year-old by Kansas City in 2011, Pedro Fernandez dominated the Dominican Summer League and the Arizona Rookie League during his first two years as a pro, turning in a pair of sub-two earned run averages. He took his second loss as his Advanced-A ERA bloated to PITCHING COACH STEVE LUEBBER S SCOUTING REPORT: I hadn t seen a whole lot of him [until his first start with us]. I know, from what (Lexington pitching coach) Carlos Reyes passes on, and (Kansas City pitching coordinator) Larry Carter, that he s got a good arm, and he s always had a good changeup. His project has been his breaking ball. He tends to have a little bit of a high front side, so he s had to work a little extra to try to get the ball down, but he s got a really good arm. LUEBBER S THOUGHTS ON FERNANDEZ FIGHTING THROUGH ADVERSITY: It can benefit a pitcher in the long-run to struggle at first, Luebber says. Everything is kind of a matter of degree. You want the guys to not cruise through the league. You want them to go have enough success to be optimistic, but also to understand they have to do certain things to be ready for the next level. As far as confidence goes, if they struggle too much, then they start doing some odd things that aren t conducive to being a good pitcher. TWISTED ALLEGIANCE: Fernandez is a huge Major League Baseball fan, although his al- legiances are a little convoluted. Growing up he was a huge admirer of Pedro Martinez, saying he could not watch Pedro pitch enough. But his favorite team was the New York Yankees, the club that Martinez famously battled in The Book on Pedro (2015) At Home: 0-1, 9.00 ERA On the Road: 0-1, ERA LH Opp Avg:.333 RH Opp Avg:.333 Record when he pitches: 0-2 Wilmington Record when he starts: 0-2 Run Support (overall): 2.0 Run Support (starting): 2.0 ERA: Season-High K s: Career-High K s: Last Win: Last Loss: Most IP, 2015: Most IP, Career: 2015 Appearances (Lexington & Wilmington) 10, (7-22) vs Rome 10, ( ) vs Rome 7-22 vs Rome 8-8 at Lynchburg 6.2 (7-22) vs Rome 6.2 ( ) vs Rome Career Numbers the early part of the last decade. These days, Fernandez has a new pitcher he looks up to. Right now my idol Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP is Felix Hernandez. He reminds me of Pedro because they are both always working hard and are aggressive 2012 (DSL Royals) on the mound [constantly staying] aggressive with the hitters. That is they type of player that I am as well (DSL Royals) STUFF TO WORK ON: Fernandez said he had two priorities during his time in Lexington this sea- son. The (AZL Royals) first thing he was working on was getting ahead in the count against hitters. The Domincan native said that was his biggest issue last season at Low-A. The other is to stick to the gameplan. Too often last year he did 2014 (Lexington) not follow the script laid in front of him by his coaches, and the results weren t good. I will continue to throw 2015 (Lexington) the first pitch for a strike as best as I can and stay ahead of the hitters. I also want to continue to throw the (Wilmington) right pitch to the hitter and follow what the pitching staff tells me about my pitches. (In Wilmington) I want to continue working hard and get better as a pitcher. I saw he texted me and said, Do you have your passport? and I was like, Oh gosh, did I get traded? I called him back and was a little nervous and he asked me if I was interested in playing in the Pan-Am Games and I said, Yeah, absolutely, kind of thinking that it was at least two or three weeks away and (he told me I d have to fly the next morning). It was a bit overwhelming but it was a great experience. It s a real honor to play for your country and play with the group of guys that was there. A lot of veterans who have been playing in the big leagues for a while and some young guys, so it was a good group. Unfortunately, we didn t come out on top, but we won silver and it was an experience I ll never forget. I think the experience from last year to this year helped me a lot. I knew what to expect going back to Lexington and I didn t put so much pressure on myself. I just played the game as I ve played it my whole life. I think I m just more relaxed and I had a better start to this year... (Moving to Florida) was a baseball decision my dad basically said that he thought I had a better chance of getting drafted out of Florida than Puerto Rico It was a great decision and I think that s why I got drafted, because of my experience playing in Florida... I like Carlos Beltran and Roberto Clemente before (that). I never got a chance to see (Clemente) play, but Roberto Clemente has the best character. He died trying to help others so I try to follow his character and try to mimic him. Right now one of my favorite players is Carlos Beltran. He s Puerto Rican, he plays baseball the right way so I try to mimic both of them. #7 Carlos Garcia, IF 5-10, 172 Lives: Margarita, Venezuela LG: August 13 vs CAR: 2-3, 3B, 2B, R, BB, K Home Stand: 3-11, 3B, 2B, R, 3BB, 3K Notes: Signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Royals on His father, Carlos Albert Garcia, also spent time in pro ball. I m just trying to have a little patience at the plate so Mauricio (Ramos) and (the middle of out order) can drive me in...(offense) is about confidence. I ve been talking to Abraham Nunez I ve known him for two or three years, he s a really good hitting coach. He s been talking to me about my feel for the type of ballpark we have in Wilmington. The ball doesn t really fly there so we have to keep swinging at the pitches down.

In (the Dominican Republic) it is the age that players typically sign with Major League teams. I was honored to be given an opportunity to sign at that age and I m glad to be here. It was hard, when I became a part of a professional team I had to leave my family back (in D.R.) and think about my job and try to be a better player everyday...the difference (between Low-A and Advanced-A) is not too big. You see better pitchers here, but you try to keep your approach and do your best everyday and help your team to win. At first, it was tough (being in Wilmington) because I started kind of slow. I have been talking to my teammates about making the approach at this League. Since then I m used to it. I think I ve gotten better and I m having better at-bats...frawley Stadium is very big. The stadium down in Lexington is much smaller, but the way you play is not too much different. I have the same swing and my approach has always been for line drives. I just want to put the ball in play. I just gut-checked myself and said, this is what I love, this what I ve got to do. If this is what I want to do I have to go out there and give it all I ve got everyday.... (Seeing the Royals in the World Series) was awesome. I wish nothing but the best for those guys, especially Terrance [Gore] and [Brandon Finnegan]. They were just with us here last year and you ve got to wish them nothing but the best. You get chills once you see what this organization has gone through and where we re at now... Alcides Escobar is somebody that a lot of infielders look up to. The way he plays defense, the way he steals bases, the way he produces hitting and everything he does. Offensively, we just need to step up and start scoring a couple more runs. A little more situational hitting, maybe just an inning starter would help. We ll be fine. It s baseball, that s how it works sometimes...it s a, next guy up, type of mentality (in the clubhouse). We ve got some new bats in this locker room that can swing it as well so we re not too worried about it, it s just a coincidence that today we didn t swing it as well...i got the opportunity to play for (Brian Buchanan) in Instructional League. I love it. He expects you to come work hard and be on time. As long as you re playing hard and on time, you re not going to have many problems. Mentally, I have a positive mind. Being positive helps a lot. Obviously, working with Abraham Nunez, our hitting coach, has been great. We have fun in the cage. We re building a new routine because the routine I had before wasn t working because it was tough on me coming off an injury. I just keep working hard in the cage with Abraham... Working with our hitting coach Abraham Nunez and putting good swings on good balls and swinging at strikes (has led to success at the plate). (left-center and right-center) is my approach. When I hit the ball hard I m always thinking double...i don t always think offensively, baseball is offense and defense. If someday I m not hitting well, I try to practice my defense, too...i don t change my swing (for homeruns). I just think about hitting the ball hard. I think my approach is to hit doubles, but if I can hit a homerun it s good, I ll take it. If I just try to play well then everything will be fine. #9 Robert Pehl, IF 6-1, 205 Lives: Chehalis, WA LG: August 12 vs CAR: 0-4, K Home Stand: 0-4, K Notes: Selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 11th round of the 2014 June Amateur Draft. Graduated W.F. I pick out a spot and I pick out a pitch that I like and try to stay disciplined and only look for that one. (I try to) not give in and swing at marginal pitches. Everybody gives in and chases once in awhile but I try to limit that and really stick to the part of the zone that I m looking for. A lot of (what I m looking for) is getting a feel for what the guy is doing to you (pattern-wise) and also what are your strengths and what you can do best. You want to do what you can do, not let the pitcher dictate what you do in the at-bat. You ve got to stay in control and just stick to what you do best and what you like to hit, especially when you re ahead in the count... Lineup-wise, there s just as much talent now (as there was at the beginning of the season). Great guys came up to fill for guys who moved on. I feel like it s always a difficult adjustment with a new group of guys, it s almost like a new team personality in the second-half. There s just too much talent here not to win. #23 Dominique Taylor, OF 6-1, 200 Lives: Layton, UT LG: August 13 vs CAR: 2-4, R, BB, K Home Stand: 3-7, R, BB, K Notes: Selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 15th round of the June 2013 Free Agent Draft. Graduate of Northridge High in Layton, UT in Set school record with career.578 batting average... Earned two All-State Second Team honors during time in high school... Earned Associates Degree at Salt Lake Community College, where he set school records in hits, RBIs, and stolen bases... Selected in 33rd round of June 2011 Free Agent Draft by the Houston Astros, but did not sign... Transferred to UC-Irvine for academic year... Hit.309 with 34 RBIs in 2013 to earn All-Big West honors. - Spent entire season with Rookie-Level Idaho Falls (.322, 8 HR, 37 RBIs) - June 20 vs. ORM: Professional debut (1-4) - Finished fifth in the Pioneer League in batting (.322) - Finished tied for eighth in the Pioneer League in runs (50), ninth in steals (13), and 10th in hits (75) - Hit.298 with 7 HR and 40 RBIs overall -Played four games with Rookie Level Burlington in late July while rehabbing from injury, but spent most of the year with Low-A Lexington - Hit.300 with 7 HR and 40 RBIs in 89 games with Lexington - Missed about a month due to injury from late-june through late-july - Named South-Atlantic League All-Star - April 9: Made Adv.-A debut at MB. Went 1-3, with RBI, K - April 12: Hit first homer of season at MB - June 2 at CAR: Broke out of a 2-for-19 slump with his first multi-rbi game of 2015 (2-for-4, R, 2RBI) - Jul. 13 at Lynchburg: First multi-xbh game of the season (2-4, 2 2B) - Aug. 6 at MB: Broke out of 5-for-39 slump with 3-for-4 game (2 2B, 2RBI, R) They said it: Both of my parents were in the Army. My mom s father was in the Air Force and my dad s parents were both teachers in the Department of Defense so that s how they met in Germany. They both joined the Army while they were in Germany so that s where I was born. I only lived for a couple of years and I ve bounced all around. I ve lived in Dallas, Texas. I ve lived in San Diego and I currently live in Salt Lake City...The biggest thing is picking a routine and sticking to it. For me, I try to have an approach of hitting the ball the other way and to swing down, hit groundballs and line drives. If you pop the ball up you have no chance of getting a hit so I try to stick to that routine everyday.
