1 MEDIA INFORMATION Frederick Keys (8-16, 3rd N, 9.0 GB) Carolina League Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles vs. Wilmington Blue Rocks (6-16, 4th N, 10.0 GB) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals Game No. 23 Home Game No. 12 Frawley Stadium Monday, May 2, :35 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: 1-10 AWAY: 5-6 STREAK: L-9 LAST 5: 0-5 LAST 10: 1-9 ROCKS ROUGH TIMES CONTINUE: Stuck in the midst of their longest losing streak of the season, the Wilmington Blue Rocks worked overtime yet fell again on Saturday. Wilmington took two separate leads, but squandered both en route to a 3-2 defeat in 12 innings to the Potomac Nationals at Pfitzner Stadium. The loss was Wilmington s ninth straight. The Rocks then were rained out at Potomac on Sunday. Due to it being the last meeting of the half between the teams, the game will not be made up. THEY RE GOING STREAKING: The Blue Crew s nine-game skid is the longest since their franchise-record 14-game losing streak from July 26 to August 9 of last season. Wilmington is batting just.174 as a team (51-for-293) during the streak and is having trouble getting men in when it does get guys aboard. After the first game of the doubleheader against Potomac on April 21, the Rocks were batting.290 with runners in scoring position, but that number has since plummeted. In their last eight games the Blue Crew is 6-for-45 with runners in scoring position, although three of the hits came on Saturday. Wilmington has stranded 25 men on base, however, in its last two games. BONUS BASEBALL: The Blue Rocks have played two extra-inning games this season, but unfortunately neither has ended well for the Blue Crew. The first extra game took place on Sunday when Wilmington lost 3-1 to these same Potomac Nationals. Saturday s setback was also the first walk-off loss of the season for the Blue Rocks. O HEARN IS OUT OF HERE: Ryan O Hearn continued to get on base for the Rocks. He reached safely for the 15th straight game thanks to a single on Saturday. The slugging first baseman is now 20-for-60 over his last 15 contests with seven home runs (two insidethe-parkers), four doubles, 15 RBI and 11 runs scored. The seven dingers are the most in the Carolina League and he is top-five in the Carolina League in batting average, hits, extra-base hits, RBI, slugging percentage, and total bases. The effort earned O Hearn a promotion, as he became the first Blue Rock to depart Advanced-A in ROMAN EMPIRE: One of the bright spots for the Blue Crew is young outfielder Roman Collins. He went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run driven in the series opener on Friday night, but one-upped himself on Saturday night. Collins compiled the first four-hit game of the season for the Rocks, going 4-for-5 with another double and a run scored to push his average to.314 in Collins is the only Blue Rock to record more than five hits on this road trip. TWO-OUT MAGIC: The Rocks were two-out fiends on Saturday. Eight of Wilmington s nine knocks came with two down in the frame. The Rocks loaded the bases twice with two away in an inning, and put two in scoring position with two outs on two more occasions. Both of the Blue Crew s RBI also came with Wilmington down to its final out of the frame. THEY SAID IT, MANAGER, JAMIE QUIRK: Two teams just played their behinds off for four hours. We re playing so hard. We took the lead but gave it back, but we put ourselves in position to get this one. You don t really say anything to them (about the streak) because they re competing. We hung in there on a miserable night... The (weather and the conditions) were definitely a factor. The grass was obviously soaking wet. The dirt was just as bad. They tried to help the mound but it just (wasn t happening). It was bad conditions and it wasn t getting any better, but it never rained hard enough for them to stop it. It was just miserable. That s the best way to describe it. Miserable...I was proud of the bullpen. Tough conditions, we re not paying well, they haven t pitched in a while and these guys still came in and did their jobs. It was nice to see and good for them. It s certainly going to give them confidence moving forward. We stranded runners when we needed to and we got ground balls when the situation called for it. Bottom line is we didn t win the game, but it wasn t cause of those guys...they pitched with heart and toughness. We really battled out there with two outs. (The key) is slowing your heart rate down. And that s what A-ball is all about. They have to learn how to slow the game down...we talk about it, but it s really something that you have to experience and go through. That s what the guys who go up are capable of and then the guys who got to the Major Leagues, I don t want to say master it, but can get it done with ease. Everybody has talent, that s why they re playing professional baseball. But the ones who know how to slow their heart rate down are the ones who end up progressing. It s a difficult skill to learn. It takes time. But they re working on it. Upcoming Probable Starters and Schedule = Today s Starters WIL: RHP Pedro Fernandez (2-0, 1.21) vs. FRE: RHP Cory Jones (0-1, 5.40) Signed as a 16-year-old by Kansas City in 2011, Pedro Fernandez dominated the Dominican Summer League and the Arizona Rookie League during his first two years as a pro, turning in a pair of sub-two earned run averages. His performance was so impressive that the Royals elected to send the then 20-year-old to Low-A Lexington for the second half of the 2014 season. It was an aggressive path, and one that brought some adversity Fernandez s way. He lost eight of his nine decisions for the Legends and posted a 4.99 ERA in 16 games (eight starts). The right-hander started 2015 in Lexington where his season would follow a similar path. He rebounded early, going 6-2 with a 3.12 ERA in 18 games (13 starts) with the Legends. He then was promoted to Wilmington where he lost six of his seven Advanced-A starts and made it through the fifth inning just once. In spite of the rough finish, Fernandez still entered the 2016 season as Kansas City s 18th-ranked prospect, according to Baseball America. Scouts love his fastball, which sits and can touch 97 when Fernandez needs something extra. The righty has been excellent in his first four outings of 2016, yielding just three runs in 22.1 combined frames. He turned in the longest start by a Blue Rock this season, allowing just four hits in seven scoreless frames against Potomac on April 24. That performance helped him earn CL Pitcher of the Week honors. Cory Jones makes his third start of the season for Frederick on Monday. The 24-year-old right-hander joined the Keys on April 19 after opening the campaign with Low-A Delmarva. Jones allowed just two runs (one earned) over nine frames in two starts with the Shorebirds. He was a Rule 5 acquisition by Baltimore in December, coming over from the St. Louis Cardinals organization. The Simi Valley CA native missed the entire 2015 campaign due to Tommy John Surgery. He pitched in Advanced-A on the Cardinals farm in 2014, going 1-0 with a 7.00 ERA. Jones was originally selected by St. Louis in the fifth round of the 2012 draft out of College of the Canyons (CA). Leading the way for the Keys is Anthony Caronia who is batting.333 through his first ten games played and is the only Key batting above.300. He has just one double though this year and three RBI while striking out 11 times and walking twice. Jomar Reyes is the No. 4 prospect in the Royals organization and ninth best third base prospect in Minor League Baseball according to Baseball America. The third basemen s average has appeared in every Keys game save for one, but is batting.224 with three doubls, a triple, three home runs and 12 RBI. Reyes missed almost a month last season with a thumb injury, but still produced 27 doubles, four triples and five home runs for Delmarva and is considered the best Power Hitter in the organization according to Baseball America. Reyes is not just one of the best third base prospects in the game, but also one of the youngest, having turned just 19 years old on February 20th. One of the best players for the Keys this sason is Aderlin Rodriguez who leads the team in total bases with 39 thanks to two doubles, a triple, and a team leading four home runs. He is also tops on the team with 14 RBI. The best fastball in the organization according to Baseball America belongs to Tanner Scott. Scott is the no. 11 prospect according to the same publication, and his fastball sits anywhere between mph, but touched 100 in the Arizona Fall League and 101 in Insturctional League. He has gotten rocked though in his first eight outings, giving up 18 runs, 14 earned, in his first 12.1 innings. Control has been and is his main issue as he has walked 16 batters while striking out 15 with two wild pitches and a hit batter. Catching Scott and the rest of the pitching staff is Jonah Heim, who is regarded by Baseball America as being the best defensive catcher in the Orioles Organization. Scott suffered a Lisfranc injury while sliding into second base last season and missd almost three months while avoiding surgery. Heim has plus skills behind the plate in blocking and receiving as well as a good arm as his pop times have been registered consistently at 2.0 or better. He is batting just.203 to begin the year with a four doubles and two home runs while driving in seven.

3 TONIGHT S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER #26 RHP Pedro Fernandez Acquired: Signed as undrafted free agent September 2, 2011 Born: May 25, 1994 in Puerto Plata, D.R. Age: 21 Resides: Puerto Plata, D.R. Ht: 6-0 Wt: 175 College: None Bats/Throws: Right/Right Pitch Repertoire: Fastball, Changeup, Slider PEDRO FERNANDEZ: Signed as a 16-year-old by Kansas City in 2011, Pedro Fernandez dominated the Dominican Summer League and the Arizona Rookie League during his first two years as a pro, turning in a pair of sub-two earned run averages. LAST SEASON FERNANDEZ WAS WORKING ON HIS BREAKING BALL: When Fernandez arrived at Advanced-A last season, the Royals had one project at the top of then pitching coach Steve Luebber s to-do list with the prospect. He s got a good arm, and he s always had a good changeup, Luebber said. His project has been his breaking ball. We are working with his grip. He also tends to have a little bit of a high front side, so he s had to work a little extra to try to get the ball down, but he s got a really good arm. You like his natural stuff and he has a bright future. PERHAPS HE FOCUSED TOO MUCH ON THE BREAKING BALL: Fernandez lamented that he struggled to keep the ball down during his time with the Rocks last season. In Lexington I had my mechanics perfect, so my pitches were perfect. My changes had some good bite and were down in the zone. Then when I got here I was leaving not just my fastball up in the zone, but also the change as well and that s where I got hurt For me it is all about that downward angle when I release the ball. I really tried to focus on that this past offseason, making sure I stay on top of the ball so I can keep everything down in the zone. That s where I want to live. Growing up he was a huge admirer of Pedro Martinez, saying he could not watch Pedro Career Numbers pitch enough. But his favorite team was the New York Yankees, the club that Martinez famously battled in Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP the early part of the last decade. These days, Fernandez has a new pitcher he looks up to. Right now my idol is Felix Hernandez. He reminds me of Pedro because they are both always working hard and are aggressive 2012 (DSL Royals) on the mound [constantly staying] aggressive with the hitters. That is they type of player that I am as well (DSL Royals) (AZL Royals) STUFF TO WORK ON: Fernandez said he has two other priorites during start. First, he wants to get ahead in 2014 (Lexington) the count against hitters. The Domincan native said that was his biggest issue two seasons ago and that it returned occasionally last year with Wilmington. The other is to stick to the gameplan. Too often during the last two years 2015 (Lexington) the righty said he did not follow the script laid in front of him by his coaches, and the results weren t good. I will (Wilmington) continue to throw the first pitch for a strike as best as I can and stay ahead of the hitters. I also want to continue to throw the right pitch to the hitter and follow what the pitching staff tells me about my pitches. (In Wilmington) I 2016 (Wilmington) want to continue working hard and get better as a pitcher. It s the same exact game in College, Little League, High School. I just basically try to simplify it and have fun...i m just trying to make the defense work at the plate and trying to keep the ball out of the air because it s probably not going to fly too well. So I just try and hit the ball hard on the ground, or a hard line drive so the defense has to make a play...i would consider myself a somewhat aggressive hitter so if I see a pitch I like early in the count then I m going to be swinging. That s just kind of how I ve been my whole career and my whole life. I ve always just kind of had an aggressive mentality in life so that s where that comes from in the game...i m not the kind of guy that guesses at pitches or is going to assume a breaking ball is coming right here unless he s thrown a first pitch curveball to nine of the last 10 batters, then I ll be sitting first pitch curveball. But other than that I m trying to pick up the ball as early as possible, get a pitch I can hit, and hit it hard... For sure my Dad helped me the most in my baseball career. It s obviously hard for him to help me at this stage though, which is cool for him to see me have success when he s not here. I mean, I m 23 years old now and I don t need him helping me how to hit. But all the days where he helped me hit and throw and field paid off, which is kind of cool. # 12 Roman Collins, OF 6 2, 210 Lives: Boca Raton, FL LG: April POT (4-for-5, 2B, R, K) Age: 20 B/T: L/L Road Trip: 6-for-8, 2 2B, R, RBI, BB, K Notes: Drafted in the 5th Round of the 2015 June Draft by the Royals out of Florida Atlantic University...Spent one season with the Owls after transferring from Des Moines Area Community College...Was named the National Junior College Association Division II Player of the Year in 2014 when he hit.435 and ranked third in the nation with 91 hits. Summer ball helped me out a ton, playing in the Northwoods League, it s a lot like professional baseball so the transition wasn t too tough for me, I was kind of used to it... The transition (from JUCO to FAU) definitely helped me a lot. It was a big step up in competition and my coaching got a lot better. They definitely helped me a lot with the mental side of the game and it helped me grow as a player...you definitely have to be able to track balls down (in the Frawley outfield). Not many balls get out of the park so it puts a lot of pressure on the outfielders to be able to track balls down and keep guys off of second base...early in the counts I m looking for balls that I want to hit, and then when I get down in the count I just try to battle, try to be a tough out and it changes a bit (my approach with two strikes), I m gonna get a lot more offspeed pitches out of the zone, you gotta be able to see pitches early and react to them...i definitely get a lot of help from my first base coach (when it comes to stealing), they try to tell me what kind of pitching times guys have. A lot of people put a lot of emphasis on speed when you re on the basepaths, but it actually has a lot to do with when you can go and when you should go... It was actually at FAU (where I learned my approach). Our coaching staff put a lot of emphasis on quality at bats. Every week we had a quality at bats chart, and people really strived to be at the top of that list.

I m It was a great decision and I think that s why I got drafted, because of that move... I sure if I mess up they ll have some smart comment after the game...my Junior year I like Carlos Beltran and Roberto Clemente. I never got a chance to see (Clemente) play, hurt my wrist and it lingered through the season. I took some time off before I went to but Roberto Clemente has the best character. He died trying to help others so I try to Idaho, but still didn t really have that much power so I was really just going with the follow his character and try to mimic him. Right now one of my favorite players is pitch and hitting it the other way so it helped the average. It healed up before I went to Carlos Beltran. He s Puerto Rican, he plays baseball the right way so I try to mimic Lexington and the power numbers went up and it kinda led to me taking a little bit both of them...when I got here, I was a little overconfident. This league humbled me bigger swings than I wanted to, causing a little bit more popouts and strikeouts. a little bit. This league is definitely a little bit better pitching wise. I understand this now Although it wasn t the best year (in terms of batting average), it was encouraging for and I worked on it the whole offseason. Now I m ready to go and excited. me to know I can get some of the power behind it again knowing my wrist felt good. In (the Dominican Republic) it is the age that players typically sign with Major League teams. I was honored to be given an opportunity to sign at that age and I m glad to be here. It was hard, when I became a part of a professional team I had to leave my family back (in D.R.) and think about my job and try to bette player everyday...the difference (between Low-A and Advanced-A) is not too big. You see better pitchers here, but you try to keep your approach and do your best everyday and help your team to win. At first, it was tough (being in Wilmington) because I started kind of slow. I talked to my teammates about making the approach at this league. After that I got used to it. I think I ve got better and started having better at-bats...frawley Stadium is very big. The stadium down in Lexington is much smaller, but the way you play is not too much different. I have the same swing and my approach has always been for line drives. I was hurt for about two months last year with the ankle. But the ankle feels fine now. I m 100%. The body feels great, the arm feels great and I m ready to go...it s a good feeling (to finally get the call up), Lexington was great, I spent two years there. Of course the point of pro baseball is to move up every year. That didn t happen for me last year, but I m excited to be here in Wilmington...All the hitting coaches were telling me, I was drafted out of high school and my bat wasn t very good the first couple of years, and they just kept telling me you need to get more at bats and more at bats and more at bats and finally it just hit that point where I just quit worrying so much about my results and just started worrying about hitting the ball hard. I think that s what clicked for me. The rhythm was there and I just started seeing the ball very well and everything clicked for me and hopefully this year I can continue that... Pitchers don t always have control where it s going, but when you re able to spend time with a staff, like we do in Wilmington, you get to know guys and get to know their fastballs and where it s going and their curveballs, sliders, changeups, etc. It s just being able to catch them every day in their flat grounds and being able to catch them, learning where they like the ball and talking to them. It s just communicating, getting to know the staff and having a connection with them on the mound. #3 Corey Toups, IF 5 10, 170 Lives: The Woodlands, TX LG: April POT (0-for-6, 3K) Age: 23 B/T: R/R Road Trip: 2-for-16, 2 2B, 3BB, 4K Notes: Selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 15th Round of the 2014 out of Sam Houston State University. He s a great guy, he s a great teammate too and he s fun to watch because he s a heck of a ballplayer...i think I can credit my success to my eye for balls and strikes. I tend to work counts pretty well. I come to the field everyday and grind. You have to be a grinder to play this game. Play hard everyday, put the work in, be patient, and you ll see results...the hardest adjustment for me in pro bal; was hitting the ball the other way. When I was in college my approach was more of a pull hitter, to just pull and yank pitches, but once I got the pros, pitchers pitch differently and pitch to your weaknesses so I had to learn to adjust. #34 Robert Pehl, IF 6 1, 205 Lives: Chehalis, WA LG: April POT (0-for-4, BB) Age: 24 B/T: R/R Road Trip: 0-for-4, BB Notes: Selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 11th Round of the 2014 Draft...Graduated W.F. I pick out a spot and I pick out a pitch that I like and try to stay disciplined and only look for that one. (I try to) not give in and swing at marginal pitches. Everybody gives in and chases once in awhile but I try to limit that and really stick to the part of the zone that I m looking for...a lot of (what I m looking for) is getting a feel for what the guy is doing to you (pattern-wise) and also what are your strengths and what you can do best. You want to do what you can do, not let the pitcher dictate what you do in the at-bat. You ve got to stay in control and just stick to what you do best and what you like to hit, especially when you re ahead in the count. #6 Luis Villegas, C 5 10, 170 Lives: Maracay, Aragua, VZ LG: April 24 vs. POT (0-for-2, BB, PR for--8th) Age: 23 B/T: R/R Homestand: 1-for-7, BB, 1LOB Notes: Signed as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, Was named a 2011 Dominican League All-Star Notes: - Spent entire season with DSL Royals (.218, HR, 8 RBI, 6 HBP, 18 BB) - May 29: Debuted against the DSL Mets (0-for-1) - June 1: First career hit (1-for-3, HBP) - August 14: First HR vs. DSL Yankees (2). 1-for-2, HR, 2RBI, 2R, BB Notes: - Spent entire season with DSL Royals (.244, HR, 23 RBI). - Named to the Al-Star team. 38 walks to just 22 strikeouts for a.397 OBP. - June 14: Only HR of DSL Indians (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) - June 23 & 24: 3 RBI in each game, going 2-for-4 both days Notes: - Spent the entire season with the AZL Royals (.232, HR, 7 RBI) - Just six extra base hits (4 doubles, one triple and one home run) - July 9: Best game of AZL Padres (3-for-3, HR, 2RBI, 2R, BB) - Spent entire season with Burlington (19 Games:.222, 2 2B, 0 RBI) - Spent season as backup catcher appearing in just 19 games. - Spent the season in Lexington, appearing in just eight games due to injury. - Played 26 games with Lexington, one with Burlington and six with Wilmington - Six Multi-hit games in first portion of season before missing most of June. - July 10: First game with Wilmington (@ Lynchburg, 0-for-3, BB, RBI) - July 12: First hit with Wilmington (@ Lynchburg, 1-for-4) - July 21: Final and best game as Blue Rock (@ Carolina, 3-for-4, 2B, RBI) - August 28 & August 31: Homered in back-to-back games played - Opened the season in Advanced-A Wilmington - April FRE: First 2-RBI game w/wil, second three hit game w/wil They said it: I worked this offseason to get my body in better shape and put in a lot of work with the trainers in spring training. I feel 100% right now...i study all the pitchers so that by the time game comes, I already know what they want to do, what their best pitches are. I m prepared so that when that big moment comes, I already know the pitchers inside and out...(playing in the six games last year with the Blue Rocks) It helped me get a feel for the league, because obviously it s higher than Lexington, and the six games experience makes me feel a lot more comfortable and I know more of what to expect this season than maybe my last time here I felt real comfortable that last game and hope I can get that same feeling from that last game where I got three hits... I think my biggest strength behind the plate is my blocking. I know how to control the game behind the plate and control pitchers.
