The Winston-Salem Dash blanked the boys from Frawley 6-0 on Monday, one night after a 4-0 whitewash. The runs came in a hurry for the Dash, as they clobbered six extra-base hits: two doubles, two triples and two dingers, in a game where the Blue Crew did not manage a single extra-base hit of their own. It was the second consecutive contest where the Winston-Salem pitcher tossed a complete-game shutout. GOOSE EGGS AND NOT THE GOOD KIND: The Blue Rocks are in the midst of their longest scoring drought of the season. They have now endured 18 straight innings without scoring a run due to back-to-back shutouts. Their previous longest span without any tallies was 16 straight frames between May 17 and May 18. They were unable to score in the final eight innings in a 3-1 loss to the Frederick Keys and followed that up by going scoreless through their first eight innings against the Carolina Mudcats, before scoring three in the bottom of the ninth in an exciting 3-2 walk-off win. Wilmington has been blanked a Carolina League-high eight times in WONDERFUL WANDER: Wander Franco seems to be hitting his stride at the end of the first half of the season. The third baseman produced a 2-for-4 night at the plate on Monday and now has hits in five of his last six games. It was the third multi-hit game in his last four starts and he is 10-for-24 in his last six contests, raising his average 26 points (.201 to.227). The hits are not cheapies either. Two of the ten knocks are doubles in that time frame and he has driven in three while scoring thrice as well. HUMBERTO HUMMING ALONG: Humberto Arteaga is as hot as any Blue Rock at the moment. The shortstop picked up yet another base knock on Monday night, going 1-for-4 on the evening. However, it could have been more if not for getting robbed on three separate occasions, two by his defensive counterpart at short. The second-year player is 12-for-27 in his last six games and has scored four runs while driving in a pair. He leads every day players in batting average and sits at.279 on the season thanks to a torrid pace as of late. He has hits in 20 of his last 23 games. Over that stretch he is batting.391 (36-for-92) with six extra-base knocks, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored. He also has seven multi-hit games in his last 13 affairs. THEY SAID IT, OUTFIELDER, ALFREDO ESCALERA: The last couple of days have been more us chasing more than anything else. That s what I m seeing, myself included, is that we re swinging at everything first pitch. We are out there with the mentality of swinging no matter what. Both these guys have throwing a lot of off speed pitches early in the count and we were chasing. And they re doing the right thing, if we re going to chase they should come right back to it. I tried to snap out of it and change my approach a little bit the last two at bats and be more patient, and I got two hits out of it...i m up there looking for a fastball every time. If he throws me a get-me-over slider or curveball early in the count I m probably going to take it. But right now we are swinging at those and most of them aren t even strikes, they re on the floor. We ve just got to lay off of those...right now it s an approach thing. We will get it. Teams go through slumps and we had been hitting the ball well, but right now it s not going the way we want...i think we re all a little bit jumpy too. Playing in this park, I mean we can see how the ball jumps during BP, it s been flying out all over the place. Wilmington is a pitchers park and this is definitely a hitters park, but you can t force it. We just have to settle down. We started to a little at the end. Everybody sees it and we know what we have to do, we ve just got to make the adjustment... When you re seeing guys for the first time you re supposed to take a couple pitches and get a feel for what they have and get the timing down. But sometimes you get a little bit jumpy. We ve got to lay off bad pitches though no matter whether you ve seen the guy before or not...it was good to see (Colin) Rodgers back out there starting. We came into the organization from the same draft class so I know as well as anyone what he s capable of. But in this game you ve got to be healthy to be able to do anything and it s good to see him back doing his thing...we ve got to find a way to get this last game Tuesday. We could get the split, which is what you re looking for on the road. Also we can build some momentum into the off day and the homestand coming up and yeah it sure would make that long bus ride back a little bit less painful if we can get the bats going and another win. Upcoming Probable Starters and Schedule Today s Starters WIL: RHP Josh Staumont (1-5, 4.97) vs. W-S: RHP Matt Cooper (3-4, 3.22) When the Royals selected Josh Staumont in the second round of the 2015 draft they knew they had a live arm. The Azusa Pacific Univeristy (Ca) product saw his fastball skyrocket from the low-to-high 90 s near the end of his college career. As a result of that gas, Baseball America ranks him as the 15th-best prospect in the Royals organization and he has the best fastball in the organization according to that same publication. He began his professional career last season in the Arizona Rookie League before pitching the final 14 games of the campaign for the Idaho Falls Chukars. He began this season in the bullpen, where he struggled with command, but still kept teams off the scoreboard. Staumont walked six hitters in only 7.2 frames as a reliever, yet yielded only two earned runs. He transitioned to the starting rotation on April 21 when he got the ball in the backend of a doubleheader against Potomac. That night he fanned nine and yielded only one run in 5.1 frames, cementing his status as a starter. His one issue this season has been throwing strikes--leading the CL with 41 walks (seven more than the next-highest total), including 22 combined over his last four starts. But, Staumont has yielded just five earned runs combined over his last three starts. Matt Cooper gets the ball tonight for the Winston-Salem Dash. Cooper is the reigning Carolina League Pitcher of the Week, after fanning 11 and yielding just two hits in eight scoreless frames against the Carolina Mudcats on Thursday. He began the week as the Minor League leader in strikeouts with 86 over his first 11 starts. the 6-foot, 190-pound righthander started his collegiate career at Bellevue Community College, where he pitched two seasons before transferring to the University of Hawaii. His final year at UH he posted a 1.60 ERA, the third-lowest in school history. The White Sox selected Cooper in the 16th round of the 2014 Draft. At Hawaii, the Washington state native started in 27 of his 31 outings, but Chicago moved him to the bullpen. After compiling a combined 2.19 ERA as a reliever in his first two seasons in the minors, the right-hander was converted into a starter prior to the 2016 campaign. His most recent start prior to this season was on May 24, 2014, against UC Riverside. However, they are batting.250 as a team, which is fourth in the league and are led by the.294 average of Mason Robbins. Robbins has nine doubles on the year with a pair of triples and a couple of home runs while driving in 14. The team s power comes mostly from three men: Gerson Montilla, Marcus Davis, and Hunter Jones. Montilla ranks first on the team in RBI and home runs, having driven in 37 with six long balls to go along with five doubles and a triple. Davis on the other hand has done most of his damage with two-baggers, collecting 12, good for second on the club (Toby Thomas has 14 but is hitting.228). He is also second in runs driven in with 25 while chipping in three triples and a dinger at a.263 pace. Jones is tied for the team lead in average along with Robbins while second on the club in extra base hits. He has done a good job of spreading around the multiple baggers, smashing eight doubles, seven triples and three homers while also driving in 20, which is third on the club. Where the Dash really stand out in terms of prospects is their pitching staff, sporting a pair of a players in the top 15 of Baseball America s Top 30 list for the organization. Spencer Adams is ranked fourth on that list, and has gotten off to a decent start with a record of 5-3 and a 3.88 ERA in 65.0 innings. Adams is said to have the best control in the organization and he has shown it, striking out 51 in his 11 outings this year while walking just 15. He has had issues with the long ball though, surrendering six blasts on the year with opponents batting.279 off of him. Joining him in the top 15 in the organization chart is Jordan Stephens. Although the righty has the high ranking, things have not been kind to the right-handed pitcher to begin the year. He and Zach Lovvorn and Lovvorn share the dubious distinction of being at the top of the Carolina League rankings in losses with six. The seceond year professional was tabbed by the White Sox in the 15th Round of the 2015 Draft out of Rice University. A standout with the Owls, he was a work horse in their regional run after missing 2014 due to Tommy John surgery. It is said he pitches with a hard-nosed, almost angry approach on the mound and sits between MPH although he can touch 96. He will also show a plus curve and a cutter/slider hybrid wth a changeup, but the slider/cutter and changeup are below average pitches.

Here s his thoughts on controlling that power to stay healthy, and locate. You hear people talk about it a lot, you can t power finesse, and it sounds interesting. The harder you throw the smoother you have to be with it. You can t be yanking around and doing other things with it. A lot of it has just been fine tuning things and making sure everything is working as smoothly as possible. That s both for arm health and as well as fastball command and velo. ADJUSTING ON THE FLY: Staumont didn t always threaten triple digits on the radar gun. It was in college that the velocity that has scouts drooling materialized. He says that has led to some changes in how he pitches. I jumped about seven miles per hour in a really short period of time. Adjusting from 90 to 92, to was a huge jump for me. Not necessarily physically, but mentally. It s a lot different playing at that level, relying even more heavily on the fastball and trusting that. Timing is a lot different. I kind of equate it to that game where the light goes around in a circle and you have to time it up between the tongues. When that light speeds up, it doesn t get any easier. So it s more finding where my release is and that kind of stuff. After all, if intimidating velocity is Most IP, 2016: 7.0, May 10 vs. Myrtle Beach your calling card, it does no good to be timid with it. I would have to say pitching aggressively is the most important thing. Fastballs early, and letting the hitter adjust to you not you adjust to the hitter, you can t let them do that. I say mainly aggressive and Career Numbers mainly from the aggressive standpoint you have to be smart with it. You can t really be throwing everything you have as aggressively as possible because in certain counts it doesn t matter, you have to know the batter as well. Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP STAUMONT ON WORKING THROUGH ADVERSITY: A lot of (fixing delivery issues) is just taking a deep breath and getting off the rubber. Baseball as they say is 90% mental and that is completely true. A big part 2015 (AZL ROY) of it is slowing the game down. If the game speeds you up and you try to catch up to it instead of controlling the game as a pitcher that s a huge thing for a lot of us. Stepping off the back of the mound and taking a deep breath and honestly getting back on is one of the best things you can do. (Idaho Falls) STAUMONT ON STARTING We were preparing the whole offseason for me to start so switching to it is not really as physically demanding as it would be coming out of the gates doing it and I ve been starting my whole life 2016 (Wilmington) and only started coming out of the pen last year, so it really wasn t too much of a difference mentally. They said it: I think I tend to simplify things, and just play the game. It s the same exact game in College, Little League, High School. I just basically try to simplify it and have fun...i m just trying to make the defense work at the plate and trying to keep the ball out of the air because it s probably not going to fly too well. So I just try and hit the ball hard on the ground, or a hard line drive so the defense has to make a play...i would consider myself a somewhat aggressive hitter so if I see a pitch I like early in the count then I m going to be swinging. That s just kind of how I ve been my whole career and my whole life. I ve always just kind of had an aggressive mentality in life so that s where that comes from in the game...i m not the kind of guy that guesses at pitches or is going to assume a breaking ball is coming right here unless he s thrown a first pitch curveball to nine of the last 10 batters, then I ll be sitting first pitch curveball. But other than that I m trying to pick up the ball as early as possible, get a pitch I can hit, and hit it hard... For sure my Dad helped me the most in my baseball career. It s really nice to play so close to home, if you re every feeling homesick I can just see my mom and dad just an hour and a half away so I feel like I m going to be really comfortable here... I m gonna get some of my best friends from home to come out... I m sure if I mess up they ll have some smart comment after the game...my Junior year I hurt my wrist and it lingered through the season. I took some time off before I went to Idaho, but still didn t really have that much power so I was really just going with the pitch and hitting it the other way so it helped the average. It healed up before I went to Lexington and the power numbers went up and it kinda led to me taking a little bit bigger swings than I wanted to, causing a little bit more popouts and strikeouts. Although it wasn t the best year (in terms of batting average), it was encouraging for me to know I can get some of the power behind it again knowing my wrist felt good.
