1 MEDIA INFORMATION Down East Wood Ducks (12-15, 3rd, 6.0 GB) Carolina League Affiliate of the Texas Rangers vs. Wilmington Blue Rocks (9-17, 5th, 7.0 GB) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals Game No. 27 Road Game No. 14 Grainger Stadium Thursday, May 4, :00 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: 5-8 AWAY: 4-9 STREAK: L 1 LAST 5: 2-3 LAST 10: 2-8 MORE FRUSTRATION AT FRAWLEY: The Wilmington Blue Rocks stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth inning on Wednesday at Frawley Stadium as they suffered yet another one-run loss in a 4-3 setback at the hands of the Salem Red Sox. Anderson Miller and Roman Collins each collected three hits to pace the Wilmington offense, but the Rocks left 12 men on base and went just 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position. On the season the Blue Crew are batting a mere.190 with men at second and/or third base. SALEM STRUGGLES: The Blue Rocks are just 1-5 through their first six games this season against the first-place Salem Red Sox. Four of those six contests have been decided by a single tally with Salem scoring the go-ahead run in its final at-bat three times. Boston prospect Michael Chavis has been largely responsible for Wilmington s struggles in the season series. The designated hitter has at least on hit in all six of the contests, including two game-winning knocks. He has also homered four times against the Blue Crew, the most by any individual opponent this season. MILLER LIVING ON BASE: Anderson Miller extended his on-base streak to 18 games on Wednesday. It is the longest of his professional career, topping his 16-gamer last season with the Low-A Lexington Legends. It marks the longest on-base streak by a Blue Rock hitter since Hunter Dozier reached in 18 straight in Roman Collins and D.J. Burt both had 13-game on-base streaks earlier this season. Miller hit the game-winning home run on Sunday, his second of the season, which ties Roman Collins for second-most on the team. Last season Miller hit just three homers with Wilmington in 144 at-bats. ROMAN AND ELIER HAVE FOUND THE ELIXIR: Roman Collins had a seasonhigh three hits on Wednesday. The effort busted the infielder out of a 5-for-37 slump over his previous ten games. Collins has two home runs so far this season after hitting none with the Blue Crew in He is one of two Blue Rocks who have already surpassed their Advanced-A homer total from last season. Elier Hernandez hit three long balls in the season s opening month. Last season Hernandez hit only two in 500 at bats with Wilmington. On Tuesday he paced the Rocks first double-digit offensive outburst of the season with two triples, a double, a run scored and two RBI. The third-year Blue Rock leads the team in doubles, homers, RBI and slugging percentage. CLOSE GAMES ARE CRUSHING THE BLUE CREW: The Blue Rocks have played in a Carolina League-high 14 one-run games so far in No other club in the ten-team loop has played in more than 11 single-score affairs, and no team in Minor League Baseball has played in more. Unfortunately for Wilmington, the Rocks are just 4-11 in such contests. Wilmington has also played in five extra innings affairs already in two more than any other Carolina League club. The Rocks are just 1-4 in those games not completed in regulation. Wilmington is also only 4-6 when scoring the game s first run (every other team in the league is at least four games above.500 when taking the game s first lead). THEY SAID IT, MANAGER JAMIE QUIRK: I thought (Foster) Griffin was good (on Wednesday). He made one bad pitch all night which was the 0-2 pitch that allowed the threerun homer. After that, he was a different pitcher. He did a nice job. He got us in a hole, but we battled back. The key for me (Wednesday night) was that we couldn t get the big hit, we went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position. We had a lot of base runners, stole four or five bases, and we got them out there, but we just could not get that one big hit to get us over the hump... The confidence factor has been a big adjustment for Griffin. What I liked was Salem beat him up when he had his one really bad outing down there. He goes out in the first inning, allowed the three-run homer and he could have wilted and say these guys got me. He didn t, and I was very proud of him for that for showing that he wanted to get them out. He has all the weapons and pitching really well this year. He has the one bad outing, one bad pitch today, but I see a guy who is focused and determined. His breaking ball is good and he s been good. What he did tonight, I m very proud of him for bearing down after giving up the three runs in the first against a team that got to him last time...offensively, we put pressure on Salem the whole game--getting on base, stealing bases and getting in scoring position. We were right there knocking on the door and we made it awful tough on them. The strikeouts hurt us when we needed contact, but we had ten hits. It was just a matter of getting that hit with runners in scoring position...roman (Collins) had a nice night. He came out here after getting a couple days off to clear his head a little bit and he played a nice game. It was also good to see Anderson (Miller) get three hits and maybe that will get him rolling. Like I said, we got them out on the bases, now we have to get them in. Today s Starters DE: RHP Emerson Martinez (0-1, 6.00 ERA) vs. WIL: RHP Scott Blewett (0-2, 3.95 ERA) Scott Blewett was selected in the second round of the 2014 draft by the Kansas City Royals, which was noteworthy because the tall right-hander became the first New York high school pitcher drafted in the first two rounds since the turn of the century (it last happened in 1999). The six-foot-six 210-pounder is the sixth-ranked prospect in the Kansas City Royals system according to Baseball America. Scouts love his fastball, which consistently sits in the mid-90s. His curveball has improved dramatically since joining the Royals system, while scouts have noticed consistent progress with his changeup as well. Blewett spent the last two seasons in Low-A Lexington, shaving almost a full run off his ERA in 2016 (from 5.20 to 4.31). He also missed a lot of bats last season, fanning 121 in 129 innings pitched. Growing up just outside of Syracuse, Blewett committed to play college ball at St. John s, before the Royals doled out a reported $1.8 million signing bonus ($800,000 above slot). Blewett faced Potomac in each of his first two Advanced-A starts, allowing nine runs, 14 hits, three homers and five walks in 9.1 frames of a no-decision and a loss. He then left in line for the win at Salem (3ER in 6IP), but took a no decision before tossing six scoreless innings in another no decision against Winston-Salem. Last time out his rotten luck continued as he took a loss despite yielding only one run in six sterling innings at Buies Creek. Emerson Martinez was signed by the Texas Rangers on May 2, 2013 and enters his first season in Advanced-A ball. He started the year in Low-A Hickory where he went 2-1 with a 1.69 ERA in three starts before being bumped up to Down East. He made his first start with the Wood Ducks on April 28 against Winston-Salem and suffered the loss. He was tagged for four runs on eight hits in six innings of work but did strikeout a season-high seven men. Last season, the 6-foot, 190-pounder spent time between Low-A Hickory and Double-A Frisco and posted a composite 3.48 ERA in 24 appearances which included six starts. Unfortunately for Martinez, he was unable to notch a victory and fell 0-6 last season. The Venezuelan native has a twin brother Kevin, who signed with the Milwaukee Brewers as a catcher in 2012 and played four years in the system before being released last January Regular-Season Series: WIL vs. DE Date Site Result WP LP Save 5/4 DE 5/5 DE 5/6 DE 5/7 DE 6/4 DE 6/5 DE 6/6 DE 8/8 DE 8/9 DE 8/10 DE 8/29 WIL 8/30 WIL 8/31 WIL Upcoming Probable Starters and Schedule Friday, May Down East, 5:00 p.m. LHP Emilio Ogando (1-0, 5.47 ERA) vs. LHP Wes Benjamin (1-2, 6.41 ERA) WGLS-FM 89.7 Saturday, May Down East, 6:00 p.m. RHP A.J. The 14-year MLB veteran made his debut with the Detroit Tigers and spent the seasons in Mo-Town before spending the majority of his playing career with the New York Mets. In his nine seasons in the Big Apple from , Johnson was a two-time All-Star, earned two Silver Slugger Awards and was in the top-5 in voting for the National League MVP Award in both 1989 and He still remains third on the Mets all-time lists for multiple categories including home runs, RBI, doubles and stolen bases. He finished his career with stops with the Colorado Rockies in 1994 and finished career with the Chicago Cubs in He was a career.249 hitter with 231 home runs. The Wood Ducks have a trio of top-30 prospects on their 2017 roster according to Baseball America with Josh Morgan (No. 6) and Brett Martin (No.10) and Jairo Beras (No. 20). Morgan is an infielder who hit.300 with seven home runs and 64 RBI in 128 games in Advanced-A High Desert. Morgan, is tabbed as having the best strike-zone discipline in the Rangers system and has struck out just 137 times through his first three seasons in the organization and has drawn 118 career walks. Defensively, Morgan primarily played shortstop in 2015, but made a transition to third base last season along with a stint at second base. Martin is a left-handed hurler who has a fastball that ranges from m.p.h. but can tick up to 94 m.p.h. He also features a curveball which is considered his put away pitch when he has full control of it. He also has a changeup and a cutter in his arsenal. He has a career record of with a 4.15 ERA and has struck out 181 batters in 200 innings of work. After some question regarding his actual age at the time of his signing, Beras inked a $4.5 million contract with the Rangers and came stateside in He has spent three seasons within the organization and has posted a.262 batting average to go along with 40 homers and 169 RBI entering the 2017 campaign. He has a strong arm in the outfield but struggles on taking proper routes to the ball. The Wood Ducks have a pair of top hitters in the Carolina League in outfielder Michael O Neill and catcher Chuck Moorman. O Neill is the nephew of former big-league outfielder Paul O Neill. Originally drafted in the third round by the New York Yankees, the speedy outfielder owns the fourth-highest batting average with a.344 contact clip entering the series. He also is tied for first in the league with nine stolen bases. Moorman ranks ninth in the league with his.329 batting average. On the mound, the Wood Ducks have Ricardo Rodriguez who paces the league with five saves as he is perfect in save opportunities to begin the year. He has yet to allow a run through his first 12 innings of work and has a solid 17:6 strikeout ratio. This season, the two teams will face each other 13 times with the first ten meetings being played in Kinston, North Carolina before the Wood Ducks travel to Frawley Stadium for a three-game series from August

3 TONIGHT S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER #45 RHP Scott Blewett Acquired: Drafted in 2nd round in MLB Draft in 2014 out of Baker H.S. (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) Born: Syracuse, N.Y. Age: 21 (April 10, 1996) Resides: Baldwinsville, N.Y. Ht: 6 6 Wt: 210 College: N/A Bats/Throws: R/R Pitch Repertoire: Fastball, Changeup, Curveball SCOTT BLEWETT: Scott Blewett was selected in the second round of the 2014 draft by the Kansas City Royals, which was noteworthy because the tall right-hander became the first New York high school pitcher drafted in the first two rounds since the turn of the century (it last happened in 1999). Last time out his rotten luck continued as he took a loss despite yielding only one run in six sterling innings at Buies Creek. JACK OF ALL TRADES: Growing up in northern New York the conditions were not exactly ideal for a young, budding baseball star, but Blewett refused to let that get in his way. When it was too cold to play baseball as a kid, the Syracuse native embraced other sports to sharpen his competitive spirit. In an age of hyper-specialization in youth sports, Blewett now sees the positives from diversification. A big thing a lot of people said is I would be fresh once I get to pro ball because I won t have nearly as many innings under my belt Blewett says. I was a three-sport athlete and I got a chance to get different perspectives from different games. I was able to compete in other atmospheres. I know a lot of guys in California and the south where it s baseball all year round. I ran cross country and ran 5K s. It doesn t sound that fun but it was exhilarating because you re competing with that guy in front of you. When I was younger I played hockey and then in high school (I played) basketball (because) of my height, so you had that element of competition. Ultimately in the spring it was baseball. Once I got to my junior and senior year it was strictly baseball. But the earlier experience gives you that competitive edge. So now for me in pro ball when I m competing for a position or on a roster I had the edge, because I understand how to compete Appearances (Wilmington) The Book on Blewett (2017) At Home: 0-0, 2.45 ERA 2G/2GS On the Road: 0-2, 4.96 ERA 3G/3GS LH Opp Avg:.345 RH Opp Avg:.191 Record when he pitches: 0-2 Wilmington Record when he starts: 0-5 Run Support (overall): 11 Run Support (starting): 2.2 ERA: 3.95 Season-High K s: 6, Salem Red Sox) Career-High K s: 10, 2x (Last: West Virginia Power) Last Win: 8/31/16 vs. Augusta GreenJackets Last Loss: Buies Creek Astros SCAPULA ISSUES IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR: Blewett had a health scare near the end of his high Most IP, 2017: 6IP, 2x (Last: 4/23 vs. Winston-Salem Dash) school career which he says came from a lack of understanding of the importance of arm maintenance. In Most IP, Career: 7IP, 4x (Last: Kannapolis Intimidators) high school I never did any shoulder work. When I got to pro ball that was something that was really emphasized and I found out I had made a big mistake. But in high school Blewett was at a showcase in the south and that mistake caught up to him. I was down in Florida and throwing in warm weather and I think I threw Career Numbers the hardest I ever threw. I had a lot of scouts watching, a lot of adrenaline, and I was overthrowing and doing a lot of things that I probably shouldn t be doing that was detrimental to my body and ultimately mu health. Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP When I went back to New York in colder weather I pitched in a game and felt some shoulder fatigue. I pulled 2014/Burlington myself out of the game, which I d never done before. He went to the doctor and after lots of tests the diagnosis was--in his words-- a really week scapula. It took me a few months to rehab to get back to maximum 2015/Lexington strength. Once we got to that point I knew I had to change some things both approach wise and work wise. 2016/Lexington From high school to now I ve worked on maintaining the strength in my scapula. Wilmington SCOTT S CHOICE: A lot of guys forego college to play pro baseball, but not everyone has the kind of Totals perspective as a teenager that Blewett brought to the decision. As a young kid I always said I wanted to play professional baseball and that was my dream. I jumped into it and chased it hard. I ve always been someone that can t go into one thing and concentrate on another thing. With school, education was always focused on when I was in high school. It was always about making sure you get your work done then focus on baseball. It s a lot easier to handle things in that atmosphere, but once I got to college I knew the work was going to get much harder and the competition was going to get harder. So I said hey if I can get into pro ball I d have one focus. If I went to college I would have two goals, graduate and hopefully get drafted again. So the tall righty decided to turn all of his attention toward making a living at the sport he loves. (8/27/15-4/10/16) -Reached safely in 59 of his 62 starts with Idaho Falls, including his last 54 starts. -On-base streak of 62 games started on July 12 and went through first eight games with Lexington in 2016 and ended on April 16, Notes: Spent the season with the Burlington Royals (Rookie/Appalachian League) -Hit.215 with two home runs and nine RBI in 49 games in his first season in professional baseball. They said it: Working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the bases. I told myself I had two pitches and then I m out.... It took its own form. I pretty much just rolled with it. I ended the season in Idaho and pretty much knew about my streak but when I started last season in Lexington I didn t even think about it. (On keeping streak alive) I think developing as a player each year and getting better each year helped.... I think defense is the number one key to me. That helps wins games. I know hitting does too but if you have pitching and defense, that can help make a run in the playoffs.... Working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the base. I told myself I had two pitches and then I m out.... I know Brandon Phillips doesn t really run like that but I compare myself to him. Jose Altuve as well. #16 Nate Esposito C Ht: 5 11 Wt: 195 Age: 23 B/T: R/R Lives: Granite Bay, CA LG: 1-for-4 Homestand:.250 (2-for-8, SO) Notes: Selected in the 33rd round of the 2015 June MLB Amateur Draft by Kansas City out of Concordia University-Portland (Portland, OR) Notes: Picked up his first multi-hit game of the season while throwing out a pair of base runners on SAL. -Collected first multi-rbi game of the season on BC -Leads team in caught stealing percentage (41%) Notes: Spent the season with the Burlington Royals (Rookie/Appalachian League) -Hit.317 with two home runs and 17 RBI in 29 games. -Did not commit and error behind the dish. (250 innings) -Threw out 28% of would-be base stealers Notes: Spent the season with the Royals (Rookie/Arizona League) and hit.250 with five RBI in 27 games. Made just one error behind the plate. They said it: I would say definitely attitude was huge for me. Learning how to take each at-bat at a time and move forward from the negative things and take the positives of each at-bat and that s helped me relax at the plate.... No. Absolutely not. I never had seven RBIs before. It was really cool. I guess the coolest thing about it was that I had no idea how many RBIs I had until the game was over and my teammates were telling me. I think that s the only reason why it happened. If I went in to each at-bat saying I already have four, let me get another one RBI, it wouldn t have happened for me and messed with my attitude. I don t think it would ve been as successful as a game.... I think that s the reason why I m here. I really pride myself on defense. I try to come out every day to run a pitching staff, keep the ball in front of me and not let runners advance. I think that s what I pride myself on the most.... I don t have a specific catcher. I can give you one guy. I was a big Jorge Posada fan of the New York Yankees. Just the way he was so agile behind the plate and lanky. He wasn t a big stocky dude because I m not like that either, but I liked the way he moved behind the plate for sure.... Definitely an energizer bunny for these guys, I think I provide a lot of energy on the field, in the bullpen or the clubhouse. Someone that can provide energy day in and day out because we all know the season can get long. They said it: I had a blast in Australia. We ended up having a really good team and really good group of guys down in Melbourne, Australia. I had a really good time and got a lot better and made improvements.... Living there was actually not as different as I thought it would be. There s a lot of US pop culture there so that wasn t much different. As far as baseball, there was actually a big difference. There s a lot of Japanese guys there so the style of play, especially the pitching is a lot different. There s a lot more splitters than change ups and I also saw a lot more soft throwing lefties which helped me out a lot.... I played football growing up and I actually almost ended up playing football in college instead of baseball. I had a few more opportunities in football than baseball but baseball has always been my passion and it ended up working out.... Definitely the fans. We have a good group of fans here and they like to come out and watch. (.981) -Recorded 17 multi-hit games which was tied for team lead. -Had more walks (35) than strikeouts (30). -Hit better against LHP (.316) than against RHP (.270) They said it: On his success last season: I had a little more freedom. The stuff I learned in college ball really helped me mature as a player and really help me deal with adversity. Kind of preserve through the slumps you go through and know how to handle those and I think that was the biggest thing. When things weren t or were going right, just know how to act.... I think it s great. In baseball you have to play defense and offense, especially at the shortstop position. You need to be a good defender, get on base, anyway to help the team win. That s what I try to do day in and day out try to get on base and let the people behind me score me and pick up the ball and help my pitchers out. Anyway to help the team succeed.... Creighton helped me. Freshman year I had the strikeouts, it comes. As I matured my sophomore and junior year I got better a pitch recognition and worked the counts. I got comfortable battling with two strikes and don t be afraid that there are two strikes on you and get nervous. I think that s the biggest thing. Not being afraid with two strikes, work the count as the leadoff hitter and the walks will come....on being rated #13 prospect No I don t think it adds any pressure. I don t try to really read into that stuff. I kind of just play the game and try to help the team win and stay inside the locker room. I don t look too much into that and try to compete and help the team.... I was a big Derek Jeter fan. I used to watch the Yankees a lot and Derek Jeter play. Right now I like Brandon Crawford. I really like how he plays. He s a grinder and would do anything to help the team. It always looks like he has a dirty uniform so I kind of try to emulate that and play the game hard.... I ve never been this far east. It s a new part of America I haven t seen. I ve been and played to the west coast, been to the south but I haven t been this far east so I m just looking forward to meeting the people up here and what they have to offer.

I could hear the band playing so that s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes.... Like everyone says growing up, it kind of clicks. Not saying I m a power hitter now but it was different to add that aspect to my game. Like I said, I m not going to go out there and try to hit home runs they just kind of happened last year. Hopefully it will continue this year....on going to Univ. of Michigan to play: Growing up I lived two miles from the stadium. I could hear the band playing so that s all I knew growing up so it was an opportunity for me to go there it was an easy yes.... It was unbelievable. The coaching staff there helped me a lot and I learned a lot about the game. Constantly building knowledge and getting to know different situations to prepare me professionally. For me it was getting healthy this offseason. I came off surgery last year so just getting a full offseason under my belt and getting my strength back I think that had a lot to do with the flaws I was having and let my swing take care of itself. There s no one specific player for me personally. I m a fan of a lot of guys in the MLB because they re can t miss TV. They said it: Luckily, I came back from a labrum surgery early in my career at Western and had some things fall my way and got lucky with that. Got a chance to play in the Cape Cod League my sophomore year. After that, my junior year went well and had a good season and started to hear my name a lot more. I always had a chip on my shoulder going to a smaller school and being a small school guy and I talked to the guys who were drafted before me in Wade Gaynor and Kes Carter were the two guys that went higher and they always played with a chip on their shoulder. I think it helped me get to that position and be blessed with that opportunity. At first in 2015 I got called up there after ten games in with Burlington and it was a little stressful. I really didn t know how to handle that situation. I went back last year and embraced it a lot more and had a lot more fun and stayed loose. I had a lot of fun with it. Last year they had an Anderson Miller bobblehead day and the first pitch of the game, I hit a home run and it was one of the top five moments of my career. It was an amazing opportunity and I know a lot of guys don t get to do that so I took it all in. It goes a long way. We spend so much time together and the closer you are off the field, the better you re going to play together, play for each other, pick each other up and play as a unit. There s not separation in the locker room and from what I see we have a really close knit group and we ve had a lot of fun so far. Even the guys who just jumped on board we got to know a lot in Spring Training. Like Foster (Griffin) said, a lot of us played together and we know how to get along with each other. I m really looking forward to it. #6 Tanner Stanley OF Ht: 5 10 Wt: 180 Age: 23 B/T: L/L Lives: Maitland, FL LG: 0-for-0, CI Homestand: LG: 1-for-2, 2B, BB, SO Notes: Drafted in the 36th round of the 2015 June Amateur Draft by Kansas City out of University of Richmond. They said it: I don t remember any of the pain. I don t remember the initial impact or five second after it happened. The only thing I remember is walking down the third base line into the clubhouse and everything after that. I went to the first hospital and had to go to a second hospital because the first one didn t have a dentist. The dentist had to pull my teeth back into place. My teeth were bent at a 45-degree angle so she had to pop those back in. The doctor had to stitch me up. I had 30 stitches from the top of my nose to underneath my lip....(on getting back in the box): It was a little tough because getting back in the box was a little uncomfortable at first. Luckily, I got hit in my first at-bat in the arm and I was worried about getting hit again but when I got hit, I said alright it s fine.... Last year I had the solid blue piece like the one Javier Baez wears. It kind of messed with my timing because I could see it every time I d go hit. I asked my agent if there was an alternate and he said yes there is. I said why not and got the helmet and every day I hit with it on the machine and no problem now.... From when I first played rookie ball in Burlington it s a night and day difference to the type of player I am. I have a better feel of how to play the game and how to treat yourself better. You have to play 140 games a year so you have to do whatever you have to do to get yourself ready.... I grew up a Houston Astros fan and I really loved Brad Ausmus. Now more so Yadier Molina and Salvador Perez. What they do is unbelievable and I m not quite at their level yet, but I hope to be soon.
