1 MEDIA INFORMATION Potomac Nationals (40-53/ 7-16, 5th, 7.5 GB / Northern) Carolina League Affiliate of the Washington Nationals vs. Wilmington Blue Rocks (53-42 / 14-11, 3rd, 1.5 GB/ Northern) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals Game No. 96 Home Game No. 45 Frawley Stadium Tuesday, July 18, :35 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: AWAY: STREAK: W 2 LAST 5: 4-1 LAST 10: 8-2 WIRE-TO-WIRE VICTORY A good start by both the offense and starting pitcher Andres Machado aided the Wilmington Blue Rocks in a 6-4 win over the Potomac Nationals Monday night at Frawley Stadium. The Rocks used a four-run opening inning while Machado twirled six-plus innings of work to earn the victory. Nate Esposito paced the offense with three hits and also drove in a run. With the win, the Blue Rocks improve to a season-best 11 games over.500 and move within 1.5 games of first place in the Northern Division. INCHING NEAR THE TOP: The Blue Rocks currently sit just a game-and-a-half out of first place in the Second Half Northern Division standings, trailing first-place Salem after the Red Sox won earlier this afternoon against Carolina. It s the closest the Rocks have been to the top spot in the division since June 23. The Rocks got off to a 3-7 start this half, but have rattled off 11 wins in their last 15 games to go from six games out of first place on July 4 to just the 1.5 games deficit entering Tuesday. NO BETTER PLACE TO WALK THAN OFF: The Blue Rocks have worked their magic late in games at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington has seven total walk-off victories, with four coming in the team s last six games. This week alone, Brandon Downes has earned a walk-off walk, Chase Vallot and Nick Heath have each produced game-ending bloop base hits and Wander Franco scored on a contest-clinching wild pitch. The seven walk-off wins are the franchise s most since at least 2009 and three of the victories have come against Potomac. BULLISH ON THE BULLPEN: The bullpen has been the backbone of the Blue Rocks the past six games, going 29 consecutive frames without allowing a run. On Monday, Matt Tenuta continued his dominance and tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball to earn the save. Sunday, Colin Rodgers, Franco Terrero, and Walker Sheller owned the last five innings of work and totaled seven strikeouts, while stranding a runner in scoring position in each frame. WE RE GOING STREAKING: D.J. Burt continued his on-base streak to 15-games on Monday night with a base hit in the sixth inning. The streak is the longest active on-base streak on the Wilmington roster. The second baseman had his 10-game hitting streak snapped with a hitless performance on Friday, but picked up a pair of walks to pad his team-lead to 58 on the season. In the last month alone, Burt has raised his batting average 25-points, rallying his.202 batting average on June 13 to a.227 mark after Monday s game. TONS OF TIGHT GAMES: The Blue Rocks have played in a Carolina League-high 36 one-run games so far in No other club in the ten-team loop has played in more than 31 single-score affairs. Incredibly for Wilmington, the Rocks are now in such contests thanks to having won 17 of their last 19. THEY SAID IT, JAMIE QUIRK: (On difference of Machado in last two starts) Controlling his pitch count. He stayed aggressive, I m sure the four runs (in the first inning) helped him. He stayed aggressive, he didn t mess around, he didn t try to trick anybody, he just said here is my stuff. His fastball was very good (on Monday) and he kept attacking, put (Potomac) on the defensive. That s what we have talked about. His good games are like that. He pitches great out of the windup but has some trouble when he gets in the stretch. When he is out of the windup, he is very good... (Nathan Esposito s) offense has been very good. He plays a lot against left handed pitching, that s when I get him in there and DH Chase Vallot. He is killing left handed pitching. He knows what he is: a base hit kind of guy. He doesn t worry about trying to do too much, just line drives all over the place. He has been a great surprise offensively. It really helps that I know how he handles the pitching staff, that s not a problem, but when he hits like that against lefties, it s a big help. THEY SAID IT, CATCHER, NATE ESPOSITO: Andres Machado throws hard and we all know that. (Monday) we really tried to get it down in the zone. The off-speed was honestly not an issue for me, I wasn t worried about him spotting up his slider or changeup. I just really wanted to get ahead and dominate with the fastball as best we can. He did, and all that secondary stuff we started to use at the end of his outing and it worked out really well for him. I like to call fastballs with him and he likes to throw them. We can get down in the zone. I know I keep saying that, but that is so important. I can tell you what s coming and if it s down in the zone, you aren t going to hit it more times than not. He likes to throw his fastball and when we get it done and on certain sides of the plate, he s happy, I m happy and it works out. Tonight s Starters WIL: RHP Scott Blewett (5-6, 3.97 ERA) vs. POT: RHP Luis Reyes (5-10, 4.66 ERA) Scott Blewett was selected in the second round of the 2014 draft by the Kansas City Royals, which was noteworthy because the tall right-hander became the first New York high school pitcher drafted in the first two rounds since the turn of the century (it last happened in 1999). The six-foot-six 210-pounder is the sixth-ranked prospect in the Kansas City Royals system according to Baseball America. Scouts love his fastball, which consistently sits in the mid-90s. His curveball has improved dramatically since joining the Royals system, while scouts have noticed consistent progress with his changeup as well. Blewett spent the last two seasons in Low-A Lexington, shaving almost a full run off his ERA in 2016 (from 5.20 to 4.31). He also missed a lot of bats last season, fanning 121 in 129 innings pitched. Growing up just outside of Syracuse, Blewett committed to play college ball at St. John s, before the Royals doled out a reported $1.8 million signing bonus ($800,000 above slot). Blewett has allowed two runs or less in 10 of his 18 outings this season. Three starts ago on July 2, he became the first Blue Rock since August of 2003 to toss a nine-inning complete game shutout, holding Salem to just four hits. In his last outing, he didn t factor in a decision and lasted five innings, allowed four runs on seven hits against Lynchburg on July 13. Against Potomac, Blewett is 2-2 with a 4.35 ERA in six starts. Luis Reyes gets the ball tonight for the Potomac Nationals. Reyes was signed as an 18-year-old by the Washington Nationals in 2012 as part of the organization s Dominican Academy. Scouts love his fastball, which has good sink and sits in the low-to-mid 90s. The 22-year-old righty made his Advanced-A debut last season and struggled, going 4-8 with a 5.60 ERA in 14 starts with Potomac. An injury cost Reyes most of the month of July, before the righty returned in August to make three appearances in the New York/Penn League and three starts for Low-A Hagerstown. He got the nod at Frawley Stadium on Opening Night this season and took the hard-luck loss despite yielding just two runs on one hit in five frames. Overall against Wilmington, Reyes is 2-2 with a 3.62 ERA in five starts. He features a four-seamer, two-seamer, change and curveball Regular-Season Series: WIL vs. POT -- WIL Leads Series (16-9) Date Site Result WP LP Save 4-6 WIL PPD (5/10) 4-7 WIL W, 6-2 Griffin (1-0) Reyes (0-1) 4-8 WIL L, 4-3 (F/12) Bacus (1-0) Machado (1-0) 4-9 WIL L, 8-7 Crownover (1-0) Ruxer (0-1) Orlan (1) 4-13 POT L, 6-4 Silvestre (1-0) Blewett (0-1) Borne (1) 4-14 POT W, 4-3 Ogando (1-0) Rodriguez (0-1) Machado (1) 4-15 POT W, 6-3 Puckett (1-1) Baez (0-1) Terrero (1) 4-16 POT W, 5-4 (F/11) Ruxer (1-1) Newberry (0-1) Machado (2) 5-9 WIL W, 3-2 Marte (1-2) Pena (1-1) 5-10 WIL L, 6-1 Baez (1-4) Blewett (1-3) 5-10 G2 WIL W, 3-2 (F/11) Cramer (1-0) Held (0-2) 5-11 WIL L, 8-4 Reyes (2-5) Puckett (3-3) 5-15 POT W, 2-0 Blewett (2-3) Baez (1-5) Terrero (2) 5-16 POT L, 10-0 L. He hit.262 three home runs and drove in 11 RBI. Entering 2017, the 19-year old outfielder has been named the best hitter for average, best athlete, best defensive outfielder ad best outfield arm in Washington s farm system per Baseball America. Joining Robles is third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez (#16 prospect in system). Last year he had pit stops in Short-Season Auburn and Low-A Hagerstown. He hit.301 in 105 games prior to his promotion to Potomac. In a small sample size of ten games, he hit.237 with a pair of extra-base hits. Other position players that rank in the Top 30 Prospects in the Nats system are shortstop Edwin Lora (#23) and outfielder Telmito Agustin (#28). On the mound, the P-Nats have six new hurlers in their pitching staff. RHP Joan Baez (#29) is the only pitcher on the 2017 squad in the Top- 30 prospects according to Baseball America. The hard-throwing righty has been clocked at triple digits, reaching 100 m.p.h. on the radar gun. He spent all of last year with Low-A Hagerstown and posted a 9-7 record with a 3.94 ERA. The P-Nats pitching staff also consists of Mariano Rivera III, the son of former New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. Rivera III was originally drafted by the Yankees in 2014 but didn t sign. The Nationals selected him in the fourth round of the 2015 draft out of Iona (NY). The younger Rivera has collected 14 saves in 22 opportunities through his first two seasons in professional baseball. There is a lot of international talent on the P-Nats roster. There are ten Dominican-born players on the roster, including all five starting pitchers for the P-Nats. In addition, the highly touted prospects all hail from the Dominican Republic. So far in the 2017 head-to-head series, the Blue Rocks lead 16-9 through the first 23 games played. Of those contests, 16 have been decided by two runs or less. The Rocks have taken 13 of the last 19 games against the Nationals.

3 TONIGHT S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER #45 RHP Scott Blewett Acquired: Drafted in 2nd round in MLB Draft in 2014 out of Baker H.S. (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) Born: Syracuse, N.Y. Age: 21 (April 10, 1996) Resides: Baldwinsville, N.Y. Ht: 6 6 Wt: 210 College: N/A Bats/Throws: R/R Pitch Repertoire: Fastball, Changeup, Curveball SCOTT BLEWETT: Scott Blewett was selected in the second round of the 2014 draft by the Kansas City Royals, which was noteworthy because the tall right-hander became the first New York high school pitcher drafted in the first two rounds since the turn of the century (it last happened in 1999). In his last outing he didn t factor in the decision and worked five innings, allowed four runs on seven hits against Lynchburg on July 13. JACK OF ALL TRADES: Growing up in northern New York the conditions were not exactly ideal for a young, budding baseball star, but Blewett refused to let that get in his way. When it was too cold to play baseball as a kid, the Syracuse native embraced other sports to sharpen his competitive spirit. In an age of hyper-specialization in youth sports, Blewett now sees the positives from diversification. A big thing a lot of people said is I would be fresh once I get to pro ball because I won t have nearly as many innings under my belt Blewett says. I was a three-sport athlete and I got a chance to get different perspectives from different games. I was able to compete in other atmospheres. I know a lot of guys in California and the south where it s baseball all year round. I ran cross country and ran 5K s. It doesn t sound that fun but it was exhilarating because you re competing with that guy in front of you. When I was younger I played hockey and then in high school (I played) basketball (because) of my height, so you had that element of competition. Ultimately in the spring it was baseball. Once I got to my junior and senior year it was strictly baseball. But the earlier experience gives you that competitive edge. So now for me in pro ball when I m competing for a position or on a roster I had the edge, because I understand how to compete Appearances (Wilmington) The Book on Blewett (2017) At Home: 3-2, 2.87 ERA 8G/8GS On the Road: 2-4, 4.96 ERA 10G/10GS LH Opp Avg:.270 RH Opp Avg:.233 Record when he pitches: 5-6 Wilmington Record when he starts: 8-10 Run Support (overall): 62 Run Support (starting): 2.9 ERA: 3.97 Season-High K s: 12, Salem Red Sox) Career-High K s: 12, Salem Red Sox) Last Win: 7/2/17 vs. Salem Red Sox Last Loss: Frederick Keys SCAPULA ISSUES IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR: Blewett had a health scare near the end of his high school career which he says came from a lack of understanding of the importance of arm maintenance. In high school I never did any shoulder work. When I got to pro ball that was something that was really emphasized Most IP, 2017: 9.0 IP, (7/2/17 vs. Salem Red Sox) and I found out I had made a big mistake. But in high school Blewett was at a showcase in the south and that mistake caught up to him. I was down in Florida and throwing in warm weather and I think I threw the hardest Most IP, Career: 9.0 IP, (7/2/17 vs. Salem Red Sox) I ever threw. I had a lot of scouts watching, a lot of adrenaline, and I was overthrowing and doing a lot of things that I probably shouldn t be doing that was detrimental to my body and ultimately mu health. When I went Career Numbers back to New York in colder weather I pitched in a game and felt some shoulder fatigue. I pulled myself out of the game, which I d never done before. He went to the doctor and after lots of tests the diagnosis was--in his Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP words-- a really week scapula. It took me a few months to rehab to get back to maximum strength. Once we 2014/Burlington got to that point I knew I had to change some things both approach wise and work wise. From high school to now I ve worked on maintaining the strength in my scapula. 2015/Lexington /Lexington SCOTT S CHOICE: A lot of guys forego college to play pro baseball, but not everyone has the kind of perspective as a teenager that Blewett brought to the decision. As a young kid I always said I wanted to play professional baseball and that 2017/Wilmington was my dream. I jumped into it and chased it hard. I ve always been someone that can t go into one thing and concentrate on another thing. With school, education was always focused on when I was in high school. It was always about making sure you Totals get your work done then focus on baseball. It s a lot easier to handle things in that atmosphere, but once I got to college I knew the work was going to get much harder and the competition was going to get harder. So I said hey if I can get into pro ball I d have one focus. If I went to college I would have two goals, graduate and hopefully get drafted again. So the tall righty decided to turn all of his attention toward making a living at the sport he loves. A LITTLE ADJUSTMENT: Sometimes the smallest of keys can help a pitcher find his rhythm. For Blewett it was an accidental discovery in the bullpen at Potomac in May that had a big impact. I had the sun in my eyes so I pulled my hat down, Blewett recounted. And wouldn t you know even something small like that let me keep my chin down and my head aligned. That keeps me from yanking my fastball Once I got that, and got in my groove with my confidence it all came together. They said it: Working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the bases. I told myself I had two pitches and then I m out...it took its own form (on 62-game on-base streak). I pretty much just rolled with it. I ended the season in Idaho and pretty much knew about my streak but when I started last season in Lexington I didn t even think about it. (On keeping streak alive) I think developing as a player each year and getting better each year helped... I think defense is the number one key to me. That helps wins games. I know hitting does too but if you have pitching and defense, that can help make a run in the playoffs...working with the coaches down in Spring Training and learning the game more. That s my game, speed and getting on and creating havoc on the base. I told myself I had two pitches and then I m out... I know Brandon Phillips doesn t really run like that but I compare myself to him. Jose Altuve as well. #15 Chris DeVito INF Ht: 6 2 Wt: 220 Age: 22 B/T: L/R Lives: Northridge, CA LG: 0-for-4, R, 2RBI Homestand:.160 (4-for-25, 2R, 3 2B, 4RBI, BB, 4SO) Notes: Selected in the 8th round of the 2016 June MLB Amateur Draft out of the University of New Mexico. Led the team in both HR and was ranked second in the league in RBI. They said it: (On what led to great success in Lexington to start the season) Honestly, my teammates. My first couple of games weren t very good and my teammates knew I could do it, they had my back and I couldn t have done it without my teammates and the great coaching staff we have down there...just trying to be as consistent as possible (On what he worked on in the off-season). That s everyone s baseball goal, to be as consistent as possible...i actually know probably more guys here (in Wilmington) than I did at the beginning of the Lexington season so I m super excited. It s a great group of guys here...i loved that school (the University of New Mexico). Great school, great place to hit. Coach (Ray) Birmingham is a great head coach and knows what he is talking about with hitting. His support staff as well with Buddy Goldsmith, Ken (Jacome), the pitching coach, and Tony Cappuccilli were all great coaches and had great team environment there...(on moving from California to New Mexico) It is definitely different. It was the best place for me to go play baseball. My best friend from high school, Jared Holly, went to New Mexico first. He was a sophomore there my freshman year and he helped me in a lot of ways to make the transition easier...(on transition from catcher to first base.)...i absolutely love it. Catching is rough, I respect those guys for being back there. Those guys grind and put their bodies on the line. Being at first is definitely a lot easier on the body... Absolutely not, I ve never done that before (on hitting for the cycle). I was just super happy to get the win and happy to contribute. (If cycle was in his mind after the triple) A little bit, but not much. I know (triples) are incredibly hard to get and I m not a big triples guy. I was just happy to get it done early and didn t have to worry about it. I m mostly happy we got the win. #34 Roman Collins OF Ht: 6 2 Wt: 210 Age: 23 B/T: L/L Lives: Boca Raton, FL LG: 0-for-4, RBI Homestand:.240 ( 6-for-25, 2R, 2B, 3B, 5RBI, BB, 3SO) Notes: Drafted in the 5th Round of the 2015 June Amateur Draft by Kansas City out of Florida Atlantic Univ. Considered one of the best pure hitters in organization last season. Turned down opportunities to play college football. Father played football at West Virginia University Notes: Hit walk-off RBI double in 15th inning vs. BC on 6/8. -Picked up fourth three-hit game of the season on 7/12 vs. LYN -Had 13-game on-base streak end on 4/20 vs. WS. -The streak was tied as the longest on-base streak on the team with D.J. Burt and was the fourthlongest in Carolina League at the time. -Tied for first in RBI (39), tied for first amongst acitve members on team with five triples, second with 18 doubles, fifth on the team with six home runs and tied for second on team in runs with 35 amongst active players. -Has posted a pair of eight-game hitting streaks this season. Posted two, nine-gamers in 2014 with Idaho Falls Notes: Spent the season between the Lexington Legends (Low-A/South Atlantic League) and Wilmington Blue Rocks (Adv. A/Carolina League). -Hit.242 with nine home runs and 41 RBI in 111 total games between the two teams. -Started the season with the Blue Rocks hitting.222/0/5 in 21 contests. -Played 90 games with the Legends and hit.246/9/36. -Collected three, four-hit games last year. -Hit.249 vs RHP and.213 vs LHP -Hit.275 on the road (208 ABs) and.207 at home (218 ABs) -Spent the winter in the Australian Winter League with the Melbourne Aces and ranked among league s leaders in total bases (tied for second), batting average (third), hits (third) and runs (tied for fourth) Notes: Spent the season with the Idaho Falls Chukars (Rookie/Pioneer League) -Hit.292 with four home runs and 45 RBI in 68 games. -Ranked tied for fourth among Pioneer League batters in walks (36) during his pro debut. -Finished third on the Chukars in hits (78), second in doubles (18) and fourth in triples (6). -Was the second toughest batter to strike out in the league (every 9.03 at-bats). They said it: I had a blast in Australia. We ended up having a really good team and really good group of guys down in Melbourne, Australia. I had a really good time and got a lot better and made improvements... Living there was actually not as different as I thought it would be. There s a lot of US pop culture there so that wasn t much different. As far as baseball, there was actually a big difference. There s a lot of Japanese guys there so the style of play, especially the pitching is a lot different. There s a lot more splitters than change ups and I also saw a lot more soft throwing lefties which helped me out a lot... I played football growing up and I actually almost ended up playing football in college instead of baseball. I had a few more opportunities in football than baseball but baseball has always been my passion and it ended up working out... Definitely the fans. We have a good group of fans here and they like to come out and watch. I like it here. #26 Brandon Downes OF Ht: 6 3 Wt: 195 Age: 24 B/T: R/R Lives: South Plainfield, NJ LG: 2-for-5, 2R, 3B, SO Homestand:.240 (6-for-25, 4R, 2B, 3B, 3RBI, 2BB, 6SO) Notes: Selected in the 7th round of the 2014 June MLB Amateur Draft by Kansas City out of University of Virginia. (5-for-5 3 2B, 3B, RBI) 2014: Spent the season with the Idaho Falls Chukars (Rookie/Pioneer League) -Hit.308 with three home runs and 23 RBI in 41 games. Finished fifth on the team with 13 doubles. They said it: I definitely think it will be a good adjustment for me. I went through the whole first year struggling a little bit. I know the stadiums, the teams, maybe some of the same players are coming back. I think it gives me a little bit of an edge on other guys in the league. I m excited...honestly I went in there carefree. If I get out, it s supposed to happen because I m the guy from A-Ball so I took it the right way. I just went out there and felt comfortable and enjoyed myself. I honestly had no pressure on myself and that s the way I should play here too which is what I m going to try to do. It was enjoyable... The postgame spread was unbelievable. You get big leaguers buying the spread and it is steak and lobster for dinner which was very awesome. The field was incredible. There was a ton more fans I m not saying we have a bad fan base, but it s a step away from the big leagues and kids are going crazy for you. It was cool to be around older guys who have been there or guys that are close to being there. The league itself was very cool. I met one of my teammates from Virginia, Chris Taylor, he got traded to the Dodgers and we were playing them during the six games I was there and it was good to see him. It s a whole different atmosphere. There s 35-year-old guys pitching to you and you do one thing wrong and they know what that weakness it, they can repeatedly make that pitch so it definitely was a big jump but definitely awesome...it s definitely a big thing (playing near hometown). There s a lot of ups and downs, especially if you get homesick, which I haven t gotten that much in my career so far. It s definitely a blessing to have your family come out.

Originally attended Oregon State University in 2012 before transferring Notes: Collected his third, three-hit game of the season on 7/17 vs. POT. Had three all of last season, six total in his career. -Had career-high ten-game hitting streak snapped on 6/9 vs. BC. -Picked up his first multi-hit game of the season while throwing out a pair of base runners on SAL. -Collected first multi-rbi game of the season on BC -Leads team in caught stealing percentage (35%) Notes: Spent the season with the Burlington Royals (Rookie/Appalachian League) -Hit.317 with two home runs and 17 RBI in 29 games. -Did not commit and error behind the dish. (250 innings) -Threw out 28% of would-be base stealers Notes: Spent the season with the Royals (Rookie/Arizona League) and hit.250 with five RBI in 27 games. Made just one error behind the plate. They said it: I would say definitely attitude was huge for me. Learning how to take each at-bat at a time and move forward from the negative things and take the positives of each at-bat and that s helped me relax at the plate... No. Absolutely not. I never had seven RBIs before. It was really cool. I guess the coolest thing about it was that I had no idea how many RBIs I had until the game was over and my teammates were telling me. I think that s the only reason why it happened. If I went in to each at-bat saying I already have four, let me get another one RBI, it wouldn t have happened for me and messed with my attitude. I don t think it would ve been as successful as a game... I think that s the reason why I m here. I really pride myself on defense. I try to come out every day to run a pitching staff, keep the ball in front of me and not let runners advance. I think that s what I pride myself on the most... I don t have a specific catcher. I can give you one guy. I was a big Jorge Posada fan of the New York Yankees. Just the way he was so agile behind the plate and lanky. He wasn t a big stocky dude because I m not like that either, but I liked the way he moved behind the plate for sure... Definitely an energizer bunny for these guys, I think I provide a lot of energy on the field, in the bullpen or the clubhouse.
