1 MEDIA INFORMATION Wilmington Blue Rocks (45-37, 7-5) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals vs. Frederick Keys (38-45, 6-7) Carolina League Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles Game No. 83 Home Game No. 42 Frawley Stadium Wednesday, July 8, :35 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: AWAY: STREAK: L1 LAST 5: 2-3 LAST 10: 5-5 HEARTBREAK HOTEL IN WILMINGTON: Down 2-0 heading into the eighth inning on Tuesday night, the Wilmington Blue Rocks scored three times to take their first lead of the game at 3-2. Not to be outdone, Frederick pushed across two of their own in the top of the ninth, as the Keys ended up taking a 4-3 victory at Frawley Stadium. Wilmington fell to 45-37, while Frederick advanced to Tanner Witt delivered the decisive blow in the top of the ninth, producing a pinch-hit, two-run triple that gave the Keys a lead they would not relinquish. EIGHTH-INNING MAGIC: Despite the loss, Wilmington put together another incredible eighth-inning rally on Tuesday. Down 2-0 heading into the frame, the Rocks scored three times to take the lead. The Blue Crew recorded two hits and two walks in the eighth, and they were also the recipient of a wild pitch, a passed ball, and an error to help their cause. In their previous home game, July 3 against Lynchburg, the Blue Rocks entered the eighth inning down 6-1. Wilmington scored eight times -- the most runs produced in a single frame this season for the Rocks -- to take a 9-6 lead. They would go on to win by that same score. THE KEY TO VICTORY: Tuesday s loss is especially jarring considering the sheer dominance Wilmington has shown against the Keys this season. Heading into the contest, the Rocks held a 7-1 record against Frederick at Frawley Stadium, including six straight wins on the Riverfront. The last time the Keys won a game in the First State was back on April 17, when they came away with a 6-4 victory. The dominance for the Blue Crew over their closest geographical rival stretches outside of Frawley, as Wilmington still holds a 13-7 overall record in the season series despite Tuesday s defeat. FURY OF ROSTER MOVEMENT Tuesday was a busy day off the field for the Rocks, as the team experienced some major roster movement. A day after seeing Ramon Torres get called up to Double-A Northwest Arkansas, Wilmington had to say goodbye to Frank Schwindel as well. Schwindel got the call to Double-A earlier in the day, leaving the Rocks as their leader in extra-base hits (32), and RBIs (32). He also exited as the Carolina League leader in doubles with 28. On the flip side of the coin, the Blue Crew welcomed three new additions to the squad. Zach Lovvorn, Humberto Arteaga, and Elier Hernandez all got the call from Low-A Lexington, making Tuesday their first day on the job with the Blue Rocks. Hernandez actually found himself in the starting lineup against the Keys, going 0-for-4 in his Advanced-A debut. STRONG STUFF FROM STRAHM : Since getting the call to the Advanced-A level in June, Matthew Strahm has been a great addition to the Wilmington pitching staff. If there is one area the lefty continues to struggle with, however, it s keeping the ball in the park. Tuesday marked Strahm s second start and fifth appearance overall with the Rocks this season. With the homer he allowed to Adrian Marin in the sixth inning, Strahm has now yielded long balls in three of his five games as a Rock. Still, Tuesday marked a career-high in innings pitched for the North Dakota native with six. JUST THE NORTH AND NOTHING BUT THE NORTH: The Blue Rocks better get used to playing against Carolina League Northern Division foes. Wilmington has not battled a CL South opponent since June 17 when they hosted the Salem Red Sox. The Blue Crew will play 27 straight contests against either Frederick, Lynchburg, or Potomac, a stretch that will last exactly one month from June 18 through July 18. With Thursday s win, the Rocks are against CL North teams this year, and are now 9-6 to begin this month-long trek through the Northern division. THEY SAID IT, MANAGER BRIAN BUCHANAN: We were one strike away, (Luis) Rico just left some of those pitches up and (Tanner Witt) just hit that one in the gap. We re fortunate to be in that spot in the first place. I thought we might be able to steal that game from them but we just left some pitches up there in the ninth...i don t think (David Hess) was so much better as we were worse. We swung at a lot of pitches out of the strike zone and we took a lot of strikes on fastballs. If you re going to take fastballs for strikes and swing at curveballs in the dirt you re going to have a long night. He pitched to our weaknesses. We were chasing stuff and taking fastballs. He threw the ball well for what we were doing with it. We just didn t have a very good approach at the plate...we took some pitches (in the eighth), got some guys on base and then the (wild pitch) and a few hits here and there and we end up taking the lead there in the eighth. We felt like we were out of it the whole game and then to get that little rally there in the eighth. We just couldn t hold on...(elier Hernandez) swung the bat well. He was swinging the bat well in Lexington and that s why he s here. That ball to center he hit pretty well too. He was swinging the bat well in Lexington and he swung the bat well here in his first game. Today s Starters WIL: RHP Zach Lovvorn (0-0, -.--) vs. FRE: LHP Ariel Miranda (0-0, 4.50) The Kansas City Royals selected high schooler Zach Lovvorn in the sixth round of the 2012 draft, and got him to pass up a scholarship offer from Samford University. The Royals gave Lovvorn a reported $275,000 bonus -- $80K over slot-- to make sure he turned pro. He began his career in the Arizona Rookie League, then spent the 2013 season in the Appalachian League and the 2014 campaign in the Pioneer League. Lovvorn opened his first campaign of full-season ball at Low-A Lexington, where he overcame a slow start (he notched a 5.68 ERA in April) to post decent overall numbers. At the time of his promotion Lovvorn was 5-6 with a 4.20 earned run average, one save, 50 strikeouts and only 15 walks in 70.2 innings pitched. When he s on, he is really tough, allowing one earned run or less in exactly half of his Low-A appearances. The Oxford, AL native makes his Advanced-A debut tonight after joining the Blue Rocks on Tuesday. Cuban left-hander Ariel Miranda signed a Minor League deal with the Orioles in late-may. The 26-year-old Miranda pitched for seven seasons in Cuba s Serie Nacional, most recently posting a 3.24 ERA in 13 starts with Mayabeque and Isla de la Juventud in He missed a lot of bats that season, fanning more than nine batters per nine innings pitched. He also missed the zone a ton, walking more than three per nine frames of work. He defected after the season and set up residency in Haiti. Orioles executive vice president of operations Dan Duquette wouldn t disclose the specific signing bonus for Miranda, but said it was less than the $800,000 given to Dariel Alvarez in the record for players signed out of Cuba by the Orioles. Duquette said Miranda s fastball was clocked between 92 and 94, and he also has a forkball and slider. He has good experience and he has good pitches, so we are hoping he can help us maybe later this year or sometime next year, Duquette said to the Baltimore Sun in May. But he s got a lot of really good attributes and experience to be a helpful major league pitcher soon. Miranda made his Advanced-A debut against the Blue Rocks at Nymeo Field on June 28, allowing a pair of runs on three hits in four frames. Jack Lopez hit a solo homer off him in the fourth Regular-Season Series: WIL vs. FRE Date Site Result WP LP Save 4-16 WIL W, 3-2 Reed (2-0) Keller(0-1) None 4-17 WIL L, 6-4 Torres (1-0) Mills (0-1) Yacabonis (1) 4-18 WIL W, 4-3 Pruneda (1-0) Urban (0-1) Yambati (3) 4-19 WIL W, 4-3 Rico (1-0) Louico (1-1) None 4-23 FRE L, 6-4 Keller (1-1) Skoglund (1-1) Wheeler (2) 4-24 FRE L, 4-3 (11) Louico (2-1) Edwards (0-1) None 4-25 FRE L, 4-3 Nowottnick (1-0) Yambati (0-1) None 4-26 FRE W, 8-2 Farrell (1-0) Hess (1-2) Reed (1) 6-4 WIL W, 7-5 (7) Skoglund (4-2) Urban (0-3) Cordero (3) 6-5 WIL W, 5-1 Junis (3-4) Gonzalez (3-5) None 6-6 WIL W, 9-3 Reed (5-3) Delgado (0-1) None 6-7 WIL W, 7-4 McCarthy (2-0) Keller (3-4) Cordero (4) 6-18 FRE W, 2-0 Mills (5-3) O Brien (0-1) Rico (3) 6-19 FRE L, 5-1 Rheault (1-1) Caramo (3-6) None 6-20 FRE W, 6-0 McCarthy (3-1) Hess (2-4) None 6-21 FRE W, 6-1 Goudeau (2-1) Gonzalez (4-7) None 6-28 FRE L, 6-2 Gonzalez (5-7) Skoglund (6-3) None 6-29 FRE W, 11-3 Manaea (1-0) Horacek (4-8) None 6-30 FRE W, 1-0 Mills (6-3) O Brien (0-3) Cordero (5) 7-7 WIL L, 4-3 Nowottnick (3-2) Rico (4-4) Wheeler (13) 7-8 WIL 7-9 WIL 7-15 WIL 7-16 WIL 7-17 WIL 7-18 WIL Upcoming Probable Starters and Schedule Thursday, July 9 vs. FRE 6:35 p.m. LHP Sean Manaea (1-0, 0.82) vs. LHP Luis Gonzalez (5-7, 7.70) WGLS-FM 89.7 Friday, July 10 at LYN 7:00 p.m. RHP Alec Mills (6-4, 2.20) vs. RHP D.J. The baseball lifer moves into the Advanced-A coaching ranks after spending the last two seasons as the manager of the Gulf Coast League Orioles. Gomez started his coaching career in 1977 as the Manager of the Medicine Hat A s, a RookieLevel affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. In his managerial career, Gomez has posted a (.480) record, managing as high as Triple-A. After a less-than impressive go at Advanced-A his last time around in 2013, Anthony Caronia has put together a solid campaign with Frederick this season, batting.260 through his first 150 at-bats. Caronia certainly is not a hard guy to root for, as he has established himself as one of the nicest guys in the Orioles organization. In 2013, Caronia received the Elrod Hendricks Award, an honor given to a member of the Baltimore organization who exhibits excellence in community service. Duirng his time in Delmarva that year, Caronia was a regular at the local Little Leagues and summer baseball camps where he was an instructor. Nik Nowottnick has become a mainstay out of the Keys bullpen as he has made 19 relief appearances for Frederick this season. Nowottnick, though, is just happy to be playing for his hometown team. Nowottnick was born in Washington, D.C. where he grew up rooting for the O s. During his youth, Nowottnick wasn t a bad baseball player, either. In high school, he led his team to two Conference titles and earned All-Bayside Conference honors his senior year. Nowottnick attended Chesapeake Junior College for two years before transferring to Towson, where he would win a CAA Championship and go to the NCAA tournament with the Tigers, the first time Towson had made the dance in 22 years. The Rocks may get a chace to see Jimmy Yacabonis this weekend, as he is currently leading the Keys in relief appearances. Fans in the Delaware Valley have been watching Yacabonis for a long time. A product of New Jersey, Yacabonis attended St. Joseph s in Philadelphia where he played baseball and set the all-time school-record for saves in a season (10) his junior year. That season, Yacabonis also earned second team All-Atlantic 10 and All-Philadelphia Baseball Big 5 honors. A 13th round pick by Baltimore in 2013, Yacabonis was named a New York-Penn League All- Star in his first professional season.

3 TONIGHT S BLUE ROCKS STARTING PITCHER #38 RHP Zach Lovvorn Acquired: Selected in the 6th round of the June 2012 Free Agent Draft Born: May 26, 1994 in Anniston, AL Age: 21 Resides: Oxford, AL Ht: 5-11 Wt: 206 College: None Bats/Throws: Right/Right Pitch Repertoire: Fastball, Changeup, Curveball, Slider Zach Lovvorn: The Kansas City Royals selected high schooler Zach Lovvorn in the sixth round of the 2012 draft, and got him to pass up a scholarship offer from Samford University. The Oxford, AL native makes his Advanced-A debut tonight after joining the Blue Rocks on Tuesday. HOW HE LEARNED OF HIS PROMOTION TO ADVANCED-A: We just did our little throwing program and running (down in Lexington) and I came into the clubhouse and the manager (Omar Ramirez) called me into his office. We have talked before so I didn t think anything of it. But I went into his office and he shut the door. He said, so what did you do wrong today? I looked over to my pitching coach (Carlos Reyes) and he was looking to me really seriously and I was just like, wow what did I do wrong to day. I just said, I didn t do anything wrong. They both started laughing and then said you are going to Wilmington tomorrow. I looked at them and was not expecting that at all and I just asked if they were serious. They said yes you are going to Wilmington tomorrow. We had a bunch of kind words to say and it really meant a lot to me hearing it from them. I was always a starter. I never came out Season-High K s: of the bullpen in high school. But that changed in his first season as a pro when he pitched in relief six times in 14 Career-High K s: outings for the Arizona Rookie Royals in He was used exclusively as a starter in 2013, but made eight more Last Win: 6, 5-1 at Asheville 7, 2x last ( ) vs. Orem 6-30 at Rome appearances out of the pen with Idaho Falls last season. During his Low-A debut this year for Lexington, the righthander worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second career save. That was pretty neat, Lovvorn said. My first experience (coming out of the bullpen to pitch the last inning) in my life and I get a save. Not bad. Last Loss: Most IP, 2015: 6-15 at Greensboro 7.0, 2X last (6-15) at Greensboro Most IP, Career: 7.0, 2X last (6-15) at Greensboro BIGGEST INFLUENCES ON ZACH: My (father) told me everything in terms of the basics about baseball, and taught me how to play ball. In Alabama we didn t have a Major League team so it was always the Braves. I went to a few Braves games growing up as a kid and at that young age I wasn t really like, Oh I want to be like that pitcher. Instead growing up it was always about Chipper Jones for me. Career Numbers Year/Teams(s) W-L ERA IP FINISHING HIGH SCHOOL WITH A BANG: Most people remember their final weeks of high school fondly, 2012 (AZL Royals) but not many can boast the kind of close to high school as Lovvorn. We won state in my senior year, he said. It was the first state title in my school s history so that was pretty neat being with that group of guys and taking state and 2013 (Burlington) everybody being into it That s one of my best memories. Then two weeks later after winning state, getting drafted 2014 (Idaho Falls) into the Majors, it doesn t get much better than that. It was a pretty cool two weeks (Lexington) Lovvorn is very serious about pitching.as a kid he played nothing but baseball year-round. However, now that it has Totals become his profession, the righty understands he has to have other interests to keep his mind fresh. Enter golf. I picked up the game as a hobby, he said. I am still working on that game. I feel like having that as a hobby is good because it also segments into the part of mental part of baseball. It is also fun to just relax on an off day or even before I go to the field to go and play a few rounds Appearances (Lexington) Date OPP G GS DEC ERA IP H R ER BB SO HR HBP WP Score Upon Exit Result Notes Apr. 1 0 SV LEX 3-2 W, 3-2 Only relief app. of year Apr. 2 1 ND LEX 6-2 W, 8-6 First start of season Apr. 18 WV 3 2 L WV 3-1 L, 8-6 Start of 3-G losing streak Apr. 4 3 L WV 7-0 L, 7-2 Raised ERA 3.60 points May 5 4 L ASH 4-1 L, 4-1 Struck out season-high six May 7 CSC 6 5 W LEX 5-1 W, 6-2 Snapped 3-G losing streak May 12 KAN 7 6 L KAN 7-3 L, HBP for only time in 2015 May 8 7 W LEX 2-1 W, 3-1 7IP for first time in career May 22 HAG 9 8 W LEX 5-1 W, 5-1 1st game w/ more W than K May 29 GVL 10 9 W LEX 7-3 W, 10-3 Third of 3 straight wins Jun ND W, 6-2 LEX scored 6 runs in 8th Jun. 9 LWD L LWD 1-0 L, 3-2 LEX rally in 9th fell short Jun. 15 GBO L GBO 4-1 L, 4-1 1st 7IP loss of career Jun W LEX 10-7 W, Most run support this year WILMINGTON

I think the experience from last year to this year helped me a lot. I knew what to expect going back to Lexington and I didn t put so much pressure on myself. I just played the game as I ve played it my whole life. I think I m just more relaxed and I had a better start to this year... (Moving to Florida) was a baseball decision my dad basically said that he thought I had a better chance of getting drafted out of Florida than Puerto Rico It was a great decision and I think that s why I got drafted, because of my experience playing in Florida... I like Carlos Beltran and Roberto Clemente before (that). I never got a chance to see (Clemente) play, but Roberto Clemente has the best character. He died trying to help others so I try to follow his character and try to mimic him. Right now one of my favorite players is Carlos Beltran. He s Puerto Rican, he plays baseball the right way so I try to mimic both of them. # 35 Cam Gallagher, C 6-2, 220 Lives: Lancaster, PA LG: July 7 vs FRE: 0-3, R, BB, K Home Stand: 0-3, R, BB, K Notes: Drafted in the second round of the 2011 MLB Draft graduate of Manheim Township High in Lancaster, PA...Hit.434 wtih 4 HR, 19 RBI, and 29 runs as a high school senior...played in the Aflac All-American Baseball Classic after his junior season...first Team Rawlings Preseason All-American in Named the 20th-best prospect in the Appalachian League in Father, Glenn, pitched in the Toronto Blue Jays organization and was selected in the third round of the 1981 Draft...Brother, Austin, was also a third-round draft pick by the L.A. Me, only living about an hour away, my family and friends came and got to see the game. A lot of the players in that game are definitely going to be playing in the big leagues someday so it was a cool experience to meet some of those guys and play beside them...i shortened my swing up a little bit. The first half of last year I struggled and the second half I kind of put things together and figured out who I am as a hitter. Hopefully I can keep going forward from where I ended up last year.

I ve been talking to Abraham Nunez I ve known him for two or three years, he s a really good hitting coach. He s been talking to me about my feel for the type of ballpark we have in Wilmington. The ball doesn t really fly there so we have to keep swinging at the pitches down. Get some hard groundballs and line drives. I think I ve been keeping concentrated on hitting the ball on the ground and I ve been feeling really good with that. #37 Dexter Kjerstad, OF 6-1, 210 Lives: Amarillo, TX LG: July 7 vs FRE: 1-2, RBI Home Stand: 1-2, RBI Notes: Signed as non-drafted free agent by Kansas City Royals on July 11, Graduate of Amarillo s Randall High in Batted.470 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs to earn All-State honors senior year...played one season at University of Texas before transferring to Howard College in Big Spring, TX...Transferred to Louisiana-Lafayette, winning Louisiana Newcomer of the Year and All-Sun Belt Conference honors in Led conference with.388 average and finished two hits short of single season school record - Did not play professionally in 2013 due to Tommy John Surgery - Spent entire season with Low-A Lexington (.275, 6 HR, 33 RBIs) - May 25: Pro debut against Savannah (2-4, 2B, 2R) - Hit first pro home run on June 11 against Asheville - Month of July: Hit.315 in 26 games (3 2B, 3 3B, 3 HR, 12 RBI s) - Notched a.500 batting average in six at-bats with the bases loaded, including a grad slam on July 1 against Greensboro - April 23: Added to Wilmington Active Roster - April 25: Made Adv.-A debut at FRE (1-4, 2K) - May 13 vs POT: First multi-hit game of season (2-for-4) - May 16 at LYN: First HR of season (pinch-hit 3-R HR in ninth inning) - May 31 at CAR (Gm. 1): First three-hit game at Advanced-A (3-3, 2B) - Named Blue Rocks Hitter of the Month in May by Royals organization (.308, HR, 3B, 2 2B, 6 RBI, 3 R in 21 games) - Has two homeruns this season (5/16 at LYN and 6/4 vs FRE) both goahead homers in Rocks wins They said it: I think, as a whole, we re playing really well. We ve played in a lot of close ballgames and we ve held a lot of close games together...i feel like I m starting to see the ball better and in the outfield I m really going after balls...one of the things I like to do is keep up with my college team, the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns. As you ve seen the last two years I ve been on and off, more on the off side. Just being more consistent and going out there and battling every at-bat...(seeing the Royals in the World Series) was awesome. I wish nothing but the best for those guys, especially Terrance [Gore] and [Brandon Finnegan]. They were just with us here last year and you ve got to wish them nothing but the best. You get chills once you see what this organization has gone through and where we re at now... Alcides Escobar is somebody that a lot of infielders look up to. The way he plays defense, the way he steals bases, the way he produces hitting and everything he does. Offensively, we just need to step up and start scoring a couple more runs. A little more situational hitting, maybe just an inning starter would help. We ll be fine. It s baseball, that s how it works sometimes...i got the opportunity to play for (Brian Buchanan) in Instructional League. I love it. He expects you to come work hard and be on time. As long as you re playing hard and on time, you re not going to have many problems. I enjoy playing for him and I like him as a guy as well...i struggled with everything; it s baseball. Everything is hard. I worked on a little bit of everything; hitting the fastball, curveballs, staying through pitches, reads in the outfield, and base running. I literally tried to work on every aspect of my game this offseason.

Mentally, I have a positive mind. Being positive helps a lot. Obviously, working with Abraham Nunez, our hitting coach, has been great. We have fun in the cage. We re building a new routine because the routine I had before wasn t working because it was tough on me coming off an injury. I just keep working hard in the cage with Abraham... Obviously, catching and hitting (with Kansas City) is new for me. I care a lot about catching because that s my position and I need to take care of the pitchers. I need to make them feel comfortable. It s been hard for me to learn every pitcher. I m still learning (Cody) Reed and (Eric) Skoglund and all of those guys, because they are new to me. It s been fun to work with those guys and with the staff. #9 Robert Pehl, IF 6-1, 205 Lives: Chehalis, WA LG: July 7 vs FRE: 0-3, 2K Home Stand: 0-3, 2K Notes: Selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 11th round of the 2014 June Amateur Draft. I think that s something that will help carry over to this ballpark, especially with how big it is. You ve got to really focus on your approach and not try to do too much here or else you are going to fly out a lot, so I think that s something I picked up in Idaho that will definitely help out here...(jumping from Rookie level to Adv.-A) was a great accomplishment. Coming out of Spring Training, I felt like I swung the bat well down in Arizona. I got here by just taking it a day at a time, trying to be professional, working on my routine, and just see-ball-hit-ball and keep it as simple as possible. I plan to follow that. It s still baseball no matter where you re playing at...one of my favorite players of all-time is Edgar Martinez. I try to model my approach [after him].
