The LumberKings rode a two home run performance from Ariel Sandoval to a 7-2 Opening Night win. Overall, the LumberKings trail the all-time series and trail since Clinton has been affiliated with the Seattle Mariners. Game 1 LumberKings Starter: Tommy Romero, 20, makes his season debut for the LumberKings today. The righty was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 15th round by Eastern Florida State in the 2017 MLB draft. Romero made his professional debut on June 28 th against the Arizona League Indians and earned the win for three innings of relief work. The righty spent his entire 2017 season with the Arizona League Mariners where he worked primarily as a reliever. This will be his third professional career start. Game 2 LumberKings Starter: Oliver Jaskie, 22, makes his season debut for the LumberKings in game two of the doubleheader. The lefthander was taken in the 6 th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of the Univeristy of Michigan where he was teammates with 2017 LumberKing outfielder Johnny Slater. He spent all of his 2017 season with the short-season Everett AquaSox. Jaskie s professional debut came in Tri-City on June 24 th with one shutout inning of relief work. He then moved into the starting rotation where he then spent the majority of his season. This will be his 11 th start of the season. Game 1 Cougars Starter: Brian Shaffer, 21, gets the ball for the Cougars game one of Sunday s doubleheader. The righty was a 6 th round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2017 draft. He pitched collegiately for the University of Maryland and following signing his professional contract he was assigned to the Arizona League Diamondbacks where he made two appearances before being promoted the short-season Hillsboro Hops. Game 2 Cougars Starter: Kevin McCanna, 24, gets the start in game two of the doubleheader for the Kane County Cougars. Originally a farm hand in the Houston Astros system, McCanna was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks following his release from the Astros. His first stint in the Midwest League came with the Quad Cities River Bandits in 2016 where his only start against the LumberKings was a win for a five-inning outing in which he allowed just one run. He pitched exclusively for the Hillsboro Hops in 2017where he went 5-1 with a 0.27 ERA. Not the First Team: Ariel Sandoval wasted no time in making friends in Clinton with his two home run performance on Opening Night. A former Dodgers prospect, Sandoval was traded to the Seattle Mariners in late March of this season. His two clouts in the opener on Saturday night gave him his seventh career multi-home run game. Sandoval now has 34 professional career home runs. Home Runs by the Numbers: Thursday night s three home runs by the LumberKings proved to be the difference in a 7-2 win. Sandoval s first home run of the game was one of the hardest hit balls ever recorded at Ashford University Field with an exit velocity of 108 MPH. Five pitches later Jack Larsen added a home run to go backto-back, a ball estimated to have traveled 414 feet. When Sandoval s second home run lands we will pass along the distance. Grace Period: The 2018 Minor League season opens with a litany of new rules. Among the rules unique to the Minor Leagues will be extra inning rules where teams will begin each extra inning with a runner at second base. Teams in the Midwest League will be limited to 10 mound visits a game but there will be grace period allowing player time to get accustomed to the new rule. April 20 th is the date in which umpires will be asked to enforce the 10 mound visits per game rule. New Skippers: Both lineup cards for the season opener will be turned in by managers in their first years with their respective clubs. Denny Hocking, a 13-year Major League veteran, primarily with the Minnesota Twins, is in his first season as a manager in the Mariners organization but has previously managed the Arizona League Angels and for the Class High- A Inland Empire 66ers, also in the Angels system. Cougars manager Blake Lalli enters his first season as a coach after ending his playing in 2017 in Triple-A with the Gwinnett Braves. Lalli made three stops at the Major Leagues his first with the Chicago Cubs in 2012, the second with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2013, and lastly with the Atlanta Braves in Top Prospects: The LumberKings begin the 2018 season with three of the Mariners top 30 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. Infielder Joseph Rosa comes in at 23. Left-handed pitcher Oliver Jaskie is ranked at 25. And Outfielder Greifer Andrade is labeled at 29. Making Baseball America s top 30 is infielder Johnny Adams who is listed as the Mariners 27 th best prospect. Those Guys Top Prospects: The Kane County Cougars enter the 2018 season with four of the Arizona Diamondbacks top 30 porspects, according to MLB Pipeline returner and infielder Jasrado Jaz Chisholm is ranked third in the organization. Left-handed pitcher Abraham Almonte owns the 22 ranking. Right-handed pitcher Brian Shaffer is labeled as the 24 th best prospect. Third basemen Eudy Ramos is ranked 28 th in the Diamondbacks farm system. This date in baseball history: On this date in 1966, at the Astrodome, the Astros and Dodgers play baseball's first game on synthetic grass. Thanks to the Monsanto chemical company, who proposed using an experimental playing surface of nylon grass, the plan to play on an all-dirt field, necessitated by the need to paint the dome's glass panes to reduce the glare which prevented natural grass from growing, was alleviated by the use of 'AstroTurf'. Broadcast Information: Erik Oas returns for his second season as the voice of LumberKings baseball. All games will be broadcast live on FM WCCI and online at LumberKings.com via the TuneIn Radio App. All-Time Series (1991): Kane County leads, Since 2009 (SEA): Kane County leads, : Clinton leads, 1-0 (of 19) In Clinton: Clinton leads, 1-0 In Kane County: Series tied, 0-0 One-Run Games: Series Tied, 0-0 Extra-Innings: Series tied, Meetings: Date Location Result/Time 4/5 at Kane County *PPD* 4/6 at Kane County *PPD* 4/7 CLINTON W, 7-2 4/8 CLINTON 2:00 PM 6/8 CLINTON 6:30 PM 6/9 CLINTON 6:30 PM 6/10 CLINTON 2:00 PM 6/11 CLINTON 6:30 PM 6/21 CLINTON 6:30 PM 6/22 CLINTON 6:30 PM 6/23 CLINTON 6:30 PM 6/24 CLINTON 2:00 PM 8/18 at Kane County 6:30 PM 8/19 at Kane County 1:00 PM 8/20 at Kane County 6:30 PM MWL 1st Half Standings MWL Western Division W-L GB Beloit Cedar Rapids Clinton Burlington Peoria Kane County Quad Cities Wisconsin MWL Eastern Division W-L GB Bowling Green Lake County Lansing South Bend West Michigan Fort Wayne Great Lakes Dayton *First Half Division Champion %First Half Wild Card Winner Upcoming Probable Pitchers: Clinton/Opponents.
