The Miami native took the loss his last time out. The lefty worked 4.1 innings against the Lake County Captains, allowed seven runs, on 11 hits, while walking one, and striking out two. Garcia has faced the Kernels more than any other team this season, and this will be his fifth start of the year against the Kernels. His worst start of the season came against the Kernels on June 18 when he failed to record an out and allowed seven runs in the shortest outing by a LumberKing this season. Interestingly Garcia also owns the longest relief outing by a LumberKing this season a five-inning appearance against the Beloit Snappers. The Mariners took Garcia in the 15 th round in the 2016 draft out of the University of Miami were he twice pitched in the NCAA College World Series. Kernels Starter: Charlie Barnes, 21, makes his season debut for the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The Sumter, South Carolina native was drafted this season by the Twins in the fourth round out of Clemson. The lefty made his professional debut on June 27 with the Elizabethtown Twins of the Appalachian League. In his six appearances in Elizabethtown five were starts and Barnes was 2-1 before earning the promotion to Cedar Rapids. His brother, James, was a redshirt freshman quarterback on the 2016 Clemson football team that won the national championship. Before being drafted he earned a degree in parks, recreation and tourism management in just three years. Fastball sits in the mid 80 s but was drafted high for his excellent control along with a plus changeup that works off an average curveball and slider. Last Time Out: A three-run top of the sixth inning home run from Gareth Morgan proved to be the difference in a Clinton LumberKings 5-3 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Sunday afternoon at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial stadium. Morgan's homer tied him for the LumberKings (15-21, 46-57) season team lead with 11. After being shutout in game one of the series Clinton wasted no time in scoring the game's first run in the top of the first inning. Bryson Brigman drove a ball off the wall in left for a one out double and scored two batters later on a Yojhan Quevedo RBI single through the left side of the infield. Ryne Inman started for Clinton and held the LumberKings 1-0 lead through two innings before allowing his only runs of the game in the bottom of the third. Joe Cronin singled to lead off in the third and was followed by a Ben Rortvedt walk. Gorge Munoz then sacrificed himself to move the runners up and Aaron Whitefield singled up the middle to score Cronin and Rortvedt for the Kernels (16-20, 55-51) only lead of the game. The LumberKings just concluded a three-game series with the Quad Cities River Bandits which was the final meeting with them for With more than a month to play the LumberKings will not play Cedar Rapids or Quad Cities again until First of Its Kind: Gareth Morgan has been one of the LumberKings sluggers this year. His three-run home run in the sixth inning of Sunday afternoons again was deciding blow. The long fly was his 11 th of the season, tied for the team lead, but the three-home run was Morgan s first three-run homer of the season. The ball traveled a really long way. Firsts and a Second: Ryne Inman threw five innings for the LumberKings on Sunday to earn his first win as a LumberKing and was then followed by Tyler Watson who worked three innings to earn his first hold as a LumberKing. Wyatt Mills broke the theme of first with a his second save of the season for a ninth inning. How Bout That: Gareth Morgan has been on some kind of tare over his last five games. He is batting.615 (8-13) over five games and has come with plenty of power. He has scored three runs, hit two home runs, while driving in seven runs. The Century Mark: The completion of Thursday night s doubleheader makes it 100 games played by the LumberKings this season. The teams record through 100 games pales in comparison to the mark the 2016 LumberKings had on their way to setting a franchise record for wins. The best record in club history 100 games through the season was set by the 1963 team. This date in baseball history: On this date in 1908, After successfully swiping second, Fred Tenney decides to return to first base on the next pitch, because Dummy Taylor had remained at third during their attempted double steal. Hoping this time to coax a throw from the Cardinal catcher to give the runner on third an opportunity to score, Tenney steals second base for the second time in the inning, but his teammate still stays put in the Giants 9-2 victory over St. Louis at the Polo Grounds. Broadcast Information: All games will be broadcast live on FM WCCI and online at LumberKings.com via the TuneIn Radio App with Erik Oas, in his first season as the Voice of the LumberKings.
