This is the Bees second visit to Clinton in 2018, the LumberKings took both games in rained shortened two game set at Ashford University Field April 17 through 19. The April 18 th rain out will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday evening. The LumberKings trail the all-time series, dating back to 1963, 417 to 431. Since Clinton has been affiliated with the Seattle Mariners (2009) they trail in the head-to-head matchups 80 games to 81. LumberKings Starter: Ray Kerr, 23, makes his eighth appearance and start of the season for the Clinton LumberKings. The California native is coming off his second quality start of the season in which he held the Cedar Rapids to Kernels to two runs, one earned, over six innings of work while walking three and striking out six. Despite throwing the ball well, Kerr was given a no decision for his time out as the LumberKings would go on to fall 6-4. The lefty was signed as a nondrafted free agent on out of Lassen Community College in 2017 and made just one appearance as a professional during the 2017 season with the Arizona League Mariners. The outing came in relief, in Clinton Kerr has worked exclusively as a starter. He missed one start following his season debut due a blister that had formed on his pitching hand. He missed just one start before returning to the starting rotation. A life long fisherman, Kerr has said if he were not in professional baseball his next dream job would be a fisherman. Bees Starter: Simon Mathews, 22, makes his 10th appearance and seventh start of the season for the Burlington Bees. The Connecticut native took a no decision for his last time out, a five-inning outing against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in Wisconsin. He held the Timber Rattlers scoreless on two hits while walking one and striking out eight. Prior to his start in Wisconsin, Mathews received a spot start up in Triple-A on May 14 with the Salt Lake Bees and held the Fresno Grizzlies scoreless over his 4.2 innings of work. It was his second stint with the Salt Lake Bees this season. He made a relief appearance with them for his second outing of the 2018 season on April 10. He has pitched out of the starting rotation since April 21 after beginning the year in the bullpen. The Los Angeles Angels signed him as a nondrafted free agent on June 21, 2017 out of Georgetown University. He originally pitched at Temple his freshman season but transferred to Georgetown following the baseball program being discontinued. In high school, Mathews lettered in baseball in all four seasons and two years lettered in soccer. Last Time Out: The Clinton LumberKings turned in another quite night at the plate and fell to the Burlington Bees 4-1 on Wednesday night as Ashford University Field. Clinton (23-20) tallied just one hit against Burlington (19-25) starter Oliver Ortega before a late fell short. LumberKings starter Tommy Romero held the Bees scoreless through the first three innings before allowing the game's first run in the top of the fourth. Torii Hunter Jr. singled to lead-off the inning and quickly moved to third on a combination stolen base and wild pitch. Franklin Torres then scored Hunter from third with a fielder's choice. The Bees continued to add to their lead. Adding another run in the top of the fifth, the final inning of work for Romero (3-3), and then taking a 3-0 lead with another single run in the sixth. Ziemba would stay on to work the ninth and earn his second save of the season. Singles by Dimas Ojeda and Eugene Helder brought the tying run to the plate in Ryan Costello, who grounded out to second to end the game. The loss, in conjunction with wins by the Peoria Chiefs and Quad Cities River Bandit, drops the LumberKings out of first place and into third. It s Been Awhile: Wednesday night s loss to the Burlington Bees marked another night where the Clinton LumberKings were outhit by their opponents. The last time Clinton out hit their opposition was on the first night of the homestand, Friday night, against Cedar Rapids. Over the stretch, the LumberKings are being outhit 58 to 29. Power Outage: For the first six weeks of the season the Clinton LumberKings were among the leaders in home runs in the Midwest League. Coming into the home-stand finale with the Burlington Bees, the LumberKings are tied for sixth in long flies with 31. It has now been a week since the LumberKings last hit a home run, May 17 th in Peoria, a Ryan Costello home run. Down and Out: The Clinton LumberKings poor showing in the month of May continued with a 4-1 loss to the Burlington Bees on Wednesday night. After going 14-6 in the month of April, the LumberKings have begun the month of May with a 9-14 record. A reason for the poor showing in May has been a lack of success at home. This month, the LumberKings are 4-9 at home, a contributing factor in the drop in the standings. The loss on Tuesday knocked the LumberKings out of first and into third place, a position that would have them on the outside looking in on the playoffs if the season were to ended today. Slow Start: A lack of hits, and thus, base runners over the last seven days has contributed to slide in stolen base production by LumberKings base runners. The team has combined to steal 32 bases this season good for the 14 th most in the Midwest League. The total give Clinton just three more than the bottom feeding Kane County Cougars. When runners have gotten on the small stolen bases total has not come from a lack of trying. The LumberKings have been caught stealing 21 times this season, tied for the second most in the league. Offense Goes Flat: The slump by LumberKings hitters at the plate can be seen in the splits by the team over their last 10 and 5 games. As a team, the LumberKings are hitting.229 over their last 10 games and an even more morose.148 over their last five games, the worst team batting average over the last five games in the Midwest League. This date in baseball history: On this date in 1986, a "drunk" Billy Martin is "fired" as the co-host of Saturday Night Live by executive producer Lorne Michaels after slurring his lines during a skit. In retaliation, the oftenunemployed Yankee manager "sets fire" to his dressing room at the end of the show, which is the season finale. Broadcast Information: Erik Oas returns for his second season as the voice of LumberKings baseball. All games will be broadcast live on FM WCCI and online at LumberKings.com via the TuneIn Radio App. Series Information All-Time Series (1962): Burlington leads, Since 2009 (SEA): Burlington leads, : Clinton leads, 4-2 (of 18) In Clinton: Clinton leads, 4-2 In Burlington: Series tied, 0-0 One-Run Games: Clinton leads, 3-0 Extra-Innings: Clinton leads, Meetings: Date Location Result/Time 4/17 CLINTON W, 3-2 4/18 CLINTON *POSTPONED* 4/19 CLINTON W, 5-3 5/21 CLINTON W, 4-3(10) 5/22 CLINTON L, 4-0 (7) 5/22 CLINTON W, 3-2 (7) 5/23 CLINTON L, 4-1 5/23 CLINTON 6:30 PM 6/5 at Burlington 6:30 PM 6/6 at Burlington 6:30 PM 6/7 at Burlington 6:30 PM 6/25 CLINTON 6:30 PM 6/26 CLINTON 6:30 PM 6/27 CLINTON 6:30 PM 8/21 at Burlington 6:30 PM 8/22 at Burlington 6:30 PM 8/23 at Burlington 6:30 PM 9/1 at Burlington 6:30 PM 9/2 at Burlington 2:00 PM 9/3 at Burlington 2:00 PM MWL 1st Half Standings MWL Western Division W-L GB Peoria Quad Cities Clinton Cedar Rapids Kane County Beloit Wisconsin Burlington MWL Eastern Division W-L GB Lansing Bowling Green West Michigan Dayton Fort Wayne Lake County South Bend Great Lakes *First Half Division Champion %First Half Wild Card Winner Upcoming Probable Pitchers: Clinton/Opponents.
