In the two teams first meeting this year at Ashford University Field in Clinton, the LumberKings came away with a three-game sweep, their first of the year. The three-game sweep contributed to a seven-game winning streak for Clinton, their longest of the season. The LumberKings trail the all-time series, dating back to 1982, 221 to 257. Since Clinton has been affiliated with the Seattle Mariners (2009) they trail the head-to-head matchups 78 games to 80. LumberKings Starter: Ray Kerr, 23, makes his second start of the season for the LumberKings. The lefty was dominate his last time out facing the Beloit Snappers at Ashford University Field. Kerr, who had been skipped in the rotation due to a blister on his pitching hand a week earlier, lasted just four innings due to a limited pitch count of 47. He set down all 12 Snappers he faced, combining with David Gerber to give the LumberKings five perfect innings to start the game. Kerr struck out four during his time out, rebounding from a season debut where he allowed seven runs on five hits while walking a professional career high four batters. Kerr was give a loss during his season debut but said that battling a blister during the start had made him not myself. Given the skipped start and three postponements for the LumberKings due to weather, Kerr went nearly two weeks between starts. The Seattle Mariners signed Kerr as a free agent out of Lassen Community College on August 22, The lefty has said if he were not in professional baseball he would be fisher and uses most of his free time to fish. Snappers Starter: Jean Ruiz, 21, makes his third start and fourth appearance of the season for the Beloit Snappers. His last outing came against the Clinton LumberKings at Ashford University Field on April 22. In the outing, Ruiz made his first bullpen appearance of the season and threw four innings, holding Clinton two runs, one earned, while walking none and striking out two. Both of the runs allowed to the LumberKings by Ruiz came into score on a Ryan Scott two RBI single, his first RBIs of the season. The Columbia native, was signed by the Oakland Athletics on May 31, 2014 and spent the following three seasons in the Dominican Summer League before making his state side debut in the New York-Penn League with the Vermont Lake Monsters. A strong 2017 season in Vermont, in which Ruiz made one postseason start, earned him his place on the Snappers Opening Day roster. Not known for strikeouts, he works off a power sinkerball that induces many ground balls. Still, through three outings, he has walked just three batters, and boasts an impressive strikeout to walk ratio 8, or 10/2, over a nine-inning ratio. About Last Night: The Clinton LumberKings survived a late push from the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to spilt a four-game series with a 7-3 win at Neuroscience Group Field on Thursday afternoon. Tommy Romero earned the win for Clinton with 5.2 shutout innings of work. The LumberKings (12-5) and Timber Rattlers (5-15) traded zeroes through the first four innings. In the top of the fifth the LumberKings broke the scoreless tie. Dimas Ojeda opened the frame with a double to left center field, off Timber Rattlers starter Christian Taugner, and was chased home on the very next pitch when Ryan Scott tripled to right center field. Louis Boyd scored Scott from third two batters later with an RBI single to center. Taugner (0-3) was given his third loss for his time out, his second against Clinton this season. Romero (2-1) picked up his second win for the LumberKings for 5.2 shutout innings of work in which he struck out six and walked none. Since the Beginning: Jack Larsen enjoyed his strongest series of the season over the four days in Grand Chute against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The LumberKings went 2-for-4 with a walk in the series finale on Thursday afternoon, and finished the series with six hits and seven RBI. He has now reached base safely in all 16 of his games this season, the only LumberKing to do so. Nothing for Free: LumberKings pitching staff has combined to allow 50 runs through the first 17 games of the season. The LumberKings have has 11 games this season without committing an error. All of the runs Lumberkings pitching has allowed to this point this season have been earned. The LumberKings are now the only remining team in all of professional baseball, at any level, to have not allowed an unearned to this season. Who Gets the Credit?: The seven runs scored in Thursday afternoons 7-3 win, did not come pretty. In the fourrun sixth inning, Clinton had just one hit and benefited from three wild pitches and three consecutive walks. With not LumberKing getting credit for an RBI in the offensive outburst. As a result, only three RBI were collected in the game by LumberKings hitters, Ryan Scott, Louis Boyd, and Eugene Helder. Just Wait Till the 6th: It happened again Thursday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field. The LumberKings broke out for another big sixth inning to force the series split with Wisconisn. In the inning, Clinton batted around to score four runs to bring their sixth inning season run total to 26 runs. The LumberKings have now scored 33% of their runs this season in the sixth inning (26/80). Golden Sombrero: One LumberKing who did not join in the LumberKings seven run offensive outburst on Thursday was Greifer Andrade. The Clinton outfielder went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts to become the first LumberKing this season to strikeout four times in one game and earn the dubious honor of golden sombrero. The strikeouts matched a professional career high for Andrade in a single game. He last struck out four times in a game while playing in the Dominican Summer League on July 8, This date in baseball history: On this date in 1961, the expansion Angels play their first home game, bowing to the Twins at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles, 4-2.
