2 Welcome to WAKA VA Recess Division A message from the Customer Service Rep First of all, I just want to say that I am extremely proud to be the Customer Service Rep for the top to bottom best competitive league in the nation. We have Panik Attack the 2010 WAKA Founders Cup World Champions, and The Situation, which includes many members of the 2008 Founders Cup champs Frosty Balls Back in Black has an elite defense. Of course, the Tiki Titans are always going to be in the mix. Same with Sloppy Seconds Also joining VA Recess is the four time defending VA Peninsula champions, The Emperors Club. Add to that NautSoJager (one of the top Peninsula teams), and Tundrafeet (they only have 20+ seasons of experience), and you can see that the competition for the VA Recess trophy will be intense. This division is stuffed with many of the best hardcore kickball teams in the nation! (No wonder we have a couple of guys, Mark Jellydogg and Gonzo Gregg who signed up to be a part of this division despite the fact that they will be commuting from DC!) But it s not just the action on the fields that is hardcore. It continues afterwards to the bar! Knuckleheads was not quite ready for WAKA on Sunday, as we had about 100 peeps pack that place. The PBRs did not last long. The Bud Lights and the Miller Lites were next All in all, we tore that place down! But don t worry I spoke with James, the GM of Knuckleheads, on Monday. He sincerely apologized for anyone who was felt like they did not have the opportunity to drink as much PBR pounders as they would have liked. And he reassured me that they would more than double their order to be prepared for this week My question is, will it be enough for us?!? All in all, I couldn t be happier with the start of the Winter 2011 campaign (minus the twisted ankle suffered at the end of our game), and I hope you guys are as excited for this season as well. 4 Notes from a Team Mom Welcome everyone to Winter 2011! We have a lot of returning faces this season, but make sure you take time each week to introduce yourself to someone new. Remember, this is a SOCIAL Athletic League. You re here to make friends and have a good time. To our new teams: Welcome! I hope this season will be everything you want it to be. Enjoy the games, meet new people, come to the bar afterward. I know, some of those veteran teams can seem really intimidating but don t let them bully you. Learn everything you can, and beat them at their own game. To our returning teams: Welcome back! Remember, we were all rookies once upon a time. Never take the new teams lightly. You never know when they are going to surprise you and sweep the division. This is your time to lead by example and show the new people just how awesome a group we have, and why we all come back every season. To everyone: Let s make this an awesome season. Learn the rules, be a good ref, don t ruin it for everyone. Clean up after yourselves at the fields. Come hang out at the bar afterward. You know the drill, let s play some ball! Be Safe. Be Smart. 5 The Emperors Club vs. Sloppy Seconds These two teams have the makings of a great rivalry, as every time they meet (whether it s in tourneys or on the Peninsula when many SS players play on Victorious Secret) the games are close and always well played. Going into the game, both teams had a lot of question marks. Both Sloppy and the VIPs have a good amount of new players, and it was going to be interesting to see how they blend. The pink team came out strong in the first inning and scored 4 innings on an interior defense lead by rookie charger Keith Best (FYI, he has the best trapezes muscles in the league) and C Jeff Pauley (who was playing out of position due to the mysterious disappearance of regular VIP catcher Troy Southall. Troy, if you re out there reading this, please let us know you are safe. Everyone is worried.) Sloppy than came out and blanked the top of the VIP order It was 4-0 after one inning. The mid-portion of The Emperors Club offense came to life in the 2nd inning, taking advantage of some wild pitching from James Salgado and cutting the lead to 2 runs. That would not last however, as the high powered Sloppy offense came back in the 3rd and scored two more runs At the end of 3 innings, the score was Sloppy Seconds 6, The Emperors Club 2. But the VIPs would not go quietly into the night, er, day. Whatever As shown a number of time in the past, The VIPs are like Michael Myers from Halloween. Not easy to kill With 2 outs, new VIPs Josh Waldrop and Cregan Brady got on base by fielder s choice and a single respectively. Up next, Lorraine Adkins placed a bunt down the first base line, Salgado, now playing catcher, scooped up the ball and ran towards first base. Adkins hustled down the line and beat out Salgado for the single! And while Sloppy paused to discuss their disagreement with the call, Waldrop and Brady came around to score on the uncovered home! The VIPs cut the lead down to 2 once again VIP Pitcher, George The inventor of having sex while taking ambien Kiriazidis came in relief (lol) and shut down SS for the final two innings, which set up the dramatic bottom of the 5th inning. John LaNaeve and Jeff Pauley both got on base against new pitcher Bryan NoShoes Moore. With 2 outs, Allen Walker came up to the plate. It looked like Walker was fooled by some of the movement on NoShoe s pitching, as he was really struggling to get the ball in play, fouling off his first 3 attempts. On the fourth one though, Walker connected and found a hole, driving in LaNaeve and Pauley for the tying runs! The VIPs however weren t able to get the walkoff as two kickers later, the side was retired by Kate Barcus squeezing a GK fly ball into her chest. NEWS AND NOTES: VIP P Brent Wentworth (3rd person alert!) suffered a high ankle sprain in the 5th inning after a collision with SS 1B Matt The Experience Barcus Best and Pauley continued to get better as the day went on, and are a couple of players worth watching. The VIPs will only be as successful as their chargers develop Lori Medford caught a ball!

6 Poll Jan The Situation - One of the top five teams in the country returns with even more talent and a somewhat slimmer roster. Lasalle's squad should be the prohibitive favorite in each of their games. 2 Tiki Titans - Despite losing some top talent to the reformation of Sloppy Seconds, Tiki still keeps it's core players this season. There won't be a better P, Ca, Ch combo in the division. If Tiki can manufacture some offense this year, they will be a very tough out. 3 Panik Attack - The Recess version of Panik might be the most vulnerable squad this young franchise has ever fielded. Losing star Charger Larry "Howitzer" Liverman was a huge blow. Ace pitcher, JC, will not play this Winter but will rejoin the squad in the Spring. Filling the roles of two of the best players in the country is not easy, and Panik will undoubtedly struggle. 4 Sloppy Seconds - A retooled Sloppy Seconds squad adds some fantastic new players to their already stacked roster of veterans. A small roster a week before the closing of registration has forced Sloppy to pick up some players that might not be as competitive as the returning players; but who knows, maybe they'll find a diamond in the rough! 5 Back in Black- A dynamic infield featuring some of the best known, and unknown talent in the country. Larry Liverman provides the experience and the championship pedigree, while lesser known Matt Coup will shock a lot of people with his stellar play at Catcher. Offense will be a huge question mark for this squad. If they can score 2+ runs per game, they will be very competitive--their defense will be that good. 6 Tundrafeet - Tundrafeet hit the veritable kickball lottery by picking up two kickball legends in Mark "Jellydogg" Lundquist and "Gonzo" Gregg Seitz. Although these two ringers won't be able to make it every week, they should provide enough of a spark to make this band of veterans competitive with the top teams in the division. 7 Poles N Holes - Ball Breakers with a twist. I know that there are some very experienced players on this team, but I just don't know if they'll be able to bring along their new players fast enough to compete with the teams in VA Recess. Communication, infighting, and other distractions might be their downfall. 8 Emperor's Club - The margin of error between 4th and 7th is so slim in this division. That being said, losing a player as good as Anthony "Ant" Williams (amongst other key players) is potentially devastating for a team like EC. Whether they can recover from the losses quickly will determine whether they're a contender or not. 9 NautSoJager - A compilation of some of the top talent from the Peninsula Division, NSJ will struggle to compete with the depth of talent in Recess. That's more a testament to the depth in this league, rather than a commentary on the quality of NSJ.

7 Rule Clarification If a ball hits the overhead power line, call it a Do Over. If a ball clears the fence without touching anything, call it a Home Run. If a ball bounces off anything (fielder, grass, etc.) before clearing the fence, call it a Double. Polar Plunge Alright folks time to dust of the bathing suits and head to the oceanfront. That's right, the balmy 40 degree water of the Atlantic is beckoning you to jump on in. The 19th Annual Polar Plunge will take place on February 4-5th between 6th and 9th Streets. Since its inception 18 years ago, more than 28,000 plungers have raised more than $5.5 million for Special Olympics Virginia. When you take the plunge, you ll be helping to provide year-round training and athletic competition to more than 10,000 athletes of all ages. Children and adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater selfconfidence and a more positive self-image. If you would like to participate you can register online at Plungers must raise a minimum of $100 for the "privilege" of achieving new levels of shrinkage. If you don't want to participate but would like to help sponsor a plunger I would encourage you to do it. It s for a good cause and those crazy people need all the encouragement and support they can get. Check out Team Freezy Fo Sheezy and you re sure to find a kickballer to sponsor. Do it. It ll make you feel good. Is your team not represented in here enough? Take photos of your team, your game, or your team hanging out in the bar. Anyone of your teammates can do it. 9 Bulletin Board Surf Division ATTENTION THIRSTY BALLERS NOTICE Azalea Little League Complex is a non-smoking, alcohol free, no pet facility. Please be respectful of this. If you must smoke, please go to the parking lot to do so, and pick up your butts. If you must drink, do so discreetly (use a cup or a coozy), choose cans over bottles (no bottle caps to pick up), and take all trash with you. Absolutely do not put beer related refuse in the trash cans at the field. These fields belong to young children, so be aware of your situation. DRINK POLICY AT AZALEA 1. Drinking straight out of the cans = NO 2. Carrying drinks to the fields in the box or in a plastic bag is not considered it being concealed, so please put in into a cooler before walking into the Little League. 3.
