SERIES RECORD u SDSU leads its series against New Mexico by the count of The teams faced each other for the first time in 1960 and were members of the Western Athletic Conference for 21 years before they moved to the Mountain West Conference in u The Lobos have won six of the last nine meetings after the teams split four games a year ago. Last season UNM took two of three games in Albuquerque with the Aztecs winning their contest during the MWC Tournament in Fort Worth. u San Diego State has a record of vs. UNM in San Diego, in Albuquerque and 4-3 on neutral fields. SCOUTING THE LOBOS u The Lobos are 14-8 overall with a game scheduled at Arizona on Wednesday (March 24) prior to hosting San Diego State. New Mexico opened conference play last weekend and dropped two of three contests to Utah at home. u UNM is led by first baseman Justin Howard (.463, 12 2B, 23 RBI), outfielder Chris Juarez (.383, 8 2B, 11 RBI) and outfielder Ryan Honeycutt (.373, 2 HR, 14 RBI). Howard entered Wednesday s game at Arizona riding a 23-game hitting streak, the second-longest in the nation this season. New Mexico is hitting.341 as a team. u The Lobo pitching staff is anchored by starters Willy Kessler (1-1, 4.82) and Mike LaChapelle (3-1, 5.76). The other tentative weekend starter is expected to be Rudy Jaramillo (1-1, 7.78). Gera Sanchez (1-1, 3.29, 4 saves) is the UNM closer. His mark in conference contests is (.610). NEW AZTEC COACHES u San Diego State has added a pair of new coaches to its staff for the 2010 season. u Eric Valenzuela assumes the role of pitching coach after serving in that capacity the past six seasons at the University of San Diego. u Former Aztec Brock Ungricht is the new volunteer assistant coach who comes to SDSU after serving as head coach at Kearny High where he led the Komets to their first league title in 24 years in AZTECS ON THE INTERNET All of San Diego State's baseball games, with the exceiton of the four MWC series away from home, can be heard live on the internet by going to and clicking on the appropriate link on the schedule calendar on the home page or by going to the "Audio- Video" tab at the top of the home page. Each of SDSU s home contests will have live streaming video on the Internet so fans can watch as well as listen to the Aztecs contests at Tony Gwynn Stadium free of charge. For the sixth consecutive year, Jack Cronin, former sports director at KALX, the campus radio station at the University of California at Berkeley will handle the Internet broadcast duties along with second-year Aztec announcers Chris Ello and Craig Elsten. This season, a minimum of 10 home games will be carried locally on XTRA Sports 1360 AM with Ello calling the action. Those contests will be streamed on the Internet in lieu of SDSU s regular broadcast. WEEKEND ROTATION u SDSU s pitching rotation for its opening weekend of league play includes John Pecoraro on Friday, Brian Crabb on Saturday and Ethan Miller on Sunday. u Pecoraro (0-0, 3 saves ERA), had moved into the closer role until the injury to Addison Reed forced his insertion into the starting rotation. Friday s game will mark his first start as an Aztec. u Crabb (2-2, 2.05 ERA) is a freshman from nearby Coronado High School who has been SDSU s No. 2 starting hurler since opening weekend. u Miller (0-0, 0.00) has been slowed by injury thus far and has made only one appearance. 3 CRABB PITCHER OF THE WEEK AGAIN u San Diego State freshman Bryan Crabb was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance against Santa Clara last Sunday (March 21), his second such award in u In that game against the Broncos, Crabb tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout in a 7-0 victory. u The first-year right-hander retired the first nine batters he faced before surrendering a leadoff walk in the fourth inning. u From the fifth through eighth frames, Crabb retired 12 of the 13 hitters he faced, with a fifth-inning walk accounting for the lone base runner during that stretch. u He fanned a career-high eight batters while allowing two walks and two singles over his nine-inning stint. u He faced just four batters over the minimum while holding the Broncos, who entered the contest with a team batting average of.342, to just a.069 average for the game (2-for- 29). u Crabb was named MWC Pitcher of the Week once previously this season (March 8). VAN HOOSIER HITTING AWAY u Freshman infielder Jordan Van Hoosier has rapidly climbed toward the top of the SDSU hitting stats this season and leads the squad with a.381 after 20 games. u During the four-game series with Santa Clara he went 9-for-15 (.600) with four RBI and a pair of runs scored. u He has also drawn 12 walks and been hit by pitch four times for a team-leading.506 onbase percentage. u He also leads the team with 11 stolen bases. u Van Hoosier has seen action at second, third and shortstop this year. MEREDITH BREAKS OUT u First baseman-outfielder Brandon Meredith is on a six-game hitting streak during which he has gone 9-for-25 (.360) with five runs scored and five RBI. u He has scored in each of the last five games and nine of the most recent 10 in which he has played. u Meredith suffered a concussion when he was hit in the head by a pitch in the game against UAB on Thursday, March 11 and missed the ensuing here contests. u He has hit safely in nine of the last 10 games going 16-for-39 (.410) with 10 runs scored and 14 RBI. u Although he did not record a base hit in the game against Monmouth on March 5, he drew three walks, was hit by a pitch and scored once (officially 0-for-1 at the plate). u Meredith is tied for the team lead in multiple- RBI games with five and is third in multiplehit games with six.

The record holder is Pat Colwell (a senior who is redshirting in 2010) with 31. OFFENSE, PITCHING IMPROVEMENT u During the four-game series against Santa Clara that concluded on Tuesday of this week, SDSU hit.366 (49-for-134) as a team and averaged seven runs per game. u In the process the Aztecs raised the squad s batting average from.250 to.271. u On the pitching side, the staff turned in a 3.50 ERA over the four contests. u In addition, SCU hit.279 during the series after beginning the weekend with a team batting average of.347. CLIMBING THE CAREER LISTS u Four Aztecs appear among the top 20 on the SDSU career lists and will move up the ladder this season. u In the hit by pitch category, Cory Vaughn ranks third with 22 while Brandon Meredith is tied for seventh with 17. Both are chasing current senior Pat Colwell who holds the SDSU career record with 31. Colwell is redshirting during the 2010 season. u Senior Brandon Decker is eighth in career sacrifice bunts with 18. u Pitcher Addison Reed is second all-time with 24 saves, two behind leader Royce Ring. u In addition, Vaughn is tied for 16th with 18 homers. His seven triples rank just outside the all-time SDSU top 20 (nine 3B ranks 20th). 5 DELAYED SEASON DEBUTS u A pair of SDSU pitchers, both newcomers to the program this season, made their Aztec debuts in the contest against Fresno State on Saturday, March 13. u Freshman Ethan Miller was impressive in tossing one perfect inning of relief against the Bulldogs. The freshman from Riverside, Calif., struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth. u Robert Alcala, a transfer from Fresno City CC, allowed a run on two hits during his one inning of work. CRABB FIRST POW HONOR u Bryan Crabb was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for the first time this season on March 8. u It was the first career weekly honor for Crabb, who became the second Aztec hurler to capture the honor after Addison Reed won it the previous week. u Crabb tossed seven innings of one-hit ball in the 7-0 win over Monmouth on March 5. u The right-hander from Coronado, Calif. (Coronado HS) surrendered just one hit, a third-inning single, while facing one batter over the minimum through the first six innings. He struck out a season-high (at the time) seven batters while issuing three walks. REED NAMED MWC PITCHER OF THE WEEK u Addison Reed was named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week on March 1 for his performance in the game against 19th-ranked University of San Diego on Feb. 25. u Making just his second career start, Reed registered the complete-game victory in SDSU s 5-2 win over the nationally-ranked Toreros. u The right-hander from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., scattered four hits while allowing two runs (one earned) and holding the Torero hitters to a.133 batting average. u Reed struck out a career-high 11 batters and gave up just one walk. He recorded two strikeouts apiece in each of the final three innings, retiring 14 of the 16 batters he faced over the final 4.2 frames.
