Links for those audio broadcasts as well as Live Stats will be avaialble at WHAT S ON TAP THIS WEEKEND IN AZTEC BASEBALL San Diego State returns home after a string of five consecutive road contests to host a threegame series against No. 13 Texas Tech this weekend. The first game of that set is scheduled for Friday, March 13, at 6:00 p.m. (PT) at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Aztecs and Red Raiders will also play games on Saturday (March 14) and Sunday (March 15) starting at 2:00 p.m. (PT) and 1:00 p.m. (PT) respectively. SERIES RECORD San Diego State s has won only one of its previous nine meetings against Texas Tech. The teams first met during the 1988 season in San Diego with SDSU winning The Red Raiders have won the ensuing eight contests between the schools with the last meeting coming during the 2001 campaign. San Diego State has a record of 1-5 vs. Texas Tech in San Diego and 0-3 in Lubbock, Texas. SCOUTING THE RED RAIDERS Texas Tech comes into the weekend with a record of Most recently the Red Raiders won a pair of mid-week home contests against New Mexico State. The Red Riders are ranked from 13th to 16th in the nation in this week s collegiate polls. Top offensive leaders include Cory Raley (.440, 5 2B, 7 RBI), Eric Gutierrez (.316, 8 2B, 12 RBI) and Hunter Hargrove (.295, 3 2B, 9 RBI). Texas Tech is hitting.304 as a team with a 3.22 earned run average. HEAD COACH MARK MARTINEZ Mark Martinez is in his first season as head coach of the Aztecs although this is his 10th season as a member of the San Diego State staff. He is just the fifth head coach in SDSU history since baseball was elevated to major sport status in Martinez was hired as an assistant coach for the Aztecs prior to the 2006 season and served for nine years under Head Coach Tony Gwynn. During that time he was promoted to the position of Associate Head Coach. Prior to his arrival at SDSU, Martinez was an assistant coach at the University of New Mexico for 17 seasons. During his time as a hitting and infield coach he helped develop the Lobos into one of the most prominent offensive teams in the nation, ranking among the top 11 in the nation in hitting his final four seasons. Martinez served as an assistant at his alma mater, Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colo., from He played shortstop at the school from , earning all-conference and all-district honors as a senior. He graduated from Mesa State with a bachelor s degree in physical education in 1984 and completed his master s in sports administration at New Mexico in 1990.

ROTATION The Aztecs pitching rotation for the weekend includes regular starters Bubba Derby (1-1, 2.96) on Friday and Mark Seyler (4-0, 3.33) on Sunday. Saturday s starting pitcher is expected to be Coy Thompson (1-0, 6.16), who moved into the weekend rotation during the series at New Mexico (March 6-8). SHEEHAN SOLID AT SHORT Danny Sheehan has a seven-game hitting streak in progress during which he is batting.484 (15-for-31) with eight RBI and nine runs scored. He had a career-high four hits in the win at Long Beach State on Tuesday and also tied his career best with three RBI. He has scored at least one run in each of SDSU s last six contests and recorded four doubles in the most recent three games. He registered a career-high three RBI in game two of the doubleheader vs. San Jose State on Feb. 27. He also stole his fifth base in five attempts in that contest. CALBUIG COMES ON Freshman outfielder Chase Calabuig is in the midst of a four-game hitting streak during which he is batting.438 (7-for-16) with two RBI and three runs scored. He had a career-high three hits in the series finale at New Mexico on March 8. In that contest he also hit his first collegiate home run, a solo shot to right in the seventh inning. Calabuig has reached base safely (via hit, walk or hit by pitch) in each of SDSU s last 13 contests. His.500 on-base percentage after 17 games ranks second on the squad. He has also made one appearance on the mound this season, tossing a third of an inning of relief vs. Valparaiso on Feb. 15. PROBABLE AZTEC STARTERS FRANCE ROLLS ON Third baseman Ty France has hit safely in eight of the past 10 games with multiple hits in six of those contests. Over that span he is hitting.381 (16-for-42) with two doubles, 13 RBI and seven runs scored. He hit safely in all three games at New Mexico last weekend (6-for-13) and drove in six runs. At Long Beach State on Tuesday he had a single, sacrifice fly and scored once. France has recorded two triples in SDSU s opening 12 contests after failing to have one during his first two seasons at SDSU. He has been errorless in the field over the past 15 games (30 chances). PALLARES DOING IT ALL Senior Steven Pallares had a seven-game hitting streak snapped in the opener at New Mexico last Friday (March 6). During that streak he is hit.516 (16-for-31) with five doubles, seven RBI and eight runs scored. After the streak ended, he went 4-for-8 with three RBI and four runs scored in the final two games at New Mexico (March 7-8). On Tuesday at Long Beach State he had a pair of hits including a two-run home run, his second of the year. He drove in a total of four runs and also scored four times. He has recorded three-hits in five of the Aztecs last nine contests. In the win over Valparaiso on Feb. 14 he tossed 1.1 innings of shutout relief and was credited with the victory when the Aztecs rallied to win it. He also tossed 0.2 innings of relief in the win over UC Riverside on Feb. 20. 3 HENSLEY BREAKS OUT Freshman David Hensley has gone 6-for-9 (.667) with three RBI and six runs scored in SDSU s last three contests. Prior to that he had made three appearances and was hitless in seven at bats. He played in the outfield at New Mexico on March 7 and has been the designated hitter in each of the last two games. At Long Beach State on Tuesday he was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. DERBY CONTINUES TO SHINE Junior right-hander Bubba Derby suffered his first loss in four starts this season last Friday (March 6) at New Mexico. He allowed three runs over 5.2 innings in the Aztecs 6-2 loss to the Lobos. Derby had picked up his first win of the season with eight innings of work in the 4-2 win over San Jose State On Feb. 27. In that game he allowed two runs on six hits with a pair of walks and eight strikeouts. He struck of 14 batters over 5.2 innings in the season opener vs. Valparaiso (Feb. 13), one shy of his career high. In the contest vs. UC Riverside on Feb. 20 he struck out 8 over five innings. He leads the Mountain West with 36 strikeouts in his 24.1 innings of work. Derby has only allowed six walks this season and has a 2.96 earned run average after his first four appearances. Those victories came against USD on Feb. 24 and in the second game of the twin bill vs. San Jose State on Feb. 27. He allowed his first run of the season in the contest vs. UC Irvine (March 3). He recorded a save in the season opener vs. Valparaiso on Feb. 13. SAYLOR SAVES CJ Saylor recorded his seventh save in SDSU s win over New Mexico in the series finale on Sunday (March 8). He entered that contest as the national Division I saves leader. He had a pair of saves the previous week after saving both games in the twin bill vs. San Jose State on Feb. 27. In the opener he tossed the ninth inning, allowing a single, but facing only three batters and striking out the last two. In the nightcap he surrendered a single to open the top of the ninth, but got a double play and fly out to end the game. He has struck out 14 batters in his 10 innings pitched this season. ZAVALA CONSISTENT Junior catcher Seby Zavala had a sevengame hitting streak come to an end in the series finale vs. San Jose State on Feb. 28. Since that game he had hit in four straight contests prior to going hitless on Tuesday at Long Beach State. His two-out three-run homer in the ninth inning at New Mexico last Saturday (March 7) tied the game and sent it to extra innings. It was his third home run of the season after having hit just two the previous two years. His five RBI in that game was a career best. After appearing exclusively in the outfield in 63 contests in 2014, Zavala has been moved to the catching position in 2015, a spot he last played as a freshman in 2012.

His 24 strikeouts ranks second in the Mountain West entering the week while his 3.33 earned run average is 10th. Seyler continued his recent history of pitching well at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Last season he went 4-1 with a 1.07 earned run average at the Aztecs home field. After two home starts this season he is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in 13 innings. WESTMORELAND MAKES IMPRESSION Freshman shortstop Brody Westmoreland made an immediate impression when he belted a home run on the second pitch of his first collegiate at bat in the contest vs. UC Riverside on Feb. 19. He followed that up by going 1-for-3 in the game at UC Riverside on Sunday (Feb. 22). As the designated hitter at UC Irvine on March 3, Westmoreland went 3-for-4 with a double. All of the above games will also be simulcast on the Internet at UTLIIZING NEW BLOOD A total of nine true freshman have seen action for the Aztecs over the first 17 games of the season. That group included Chase Calabuig, Denz l Chapman, Brody Westmoreland, Tyler Loptien, Alan Trejo, Marshall Smith, Hunter Stratton, David Hensley and Justin Wylie. In addition, a pair of new junior college transfers made their SDSU debuts as well (Brian Heldman and Dalton Douty). Sophomore pitcher Calvin Munson also made his first-ever appearance for the Aztecs after having played only football at SDSU the past two years. HITTING STREAKS SDSU s longest hitting streak entering the week belongs to Danny Sheehan at seven games. That ties the Aztecs longest hitting streak this season by Ryan Muno, Seby Zavala and Steven Pallares. Zavala and Andrew Brown have reached base safely (via hit, walk or hit by pitch) in each of the opening 17 contests. Chase Calabuig has reached in 13 straight games.

5 PITCHER OF THE WEEK Sophomore reliever CJ Saylor was named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 23. He made three relief appearances during the week of Feb and recorded three saves. In game vs. Loyola Marymount (Feb. 17) and UC Riverside (Feb. 19) he came on in the ninth with two men on and one out and proceeded to strike out the two batters he faced. In the contest at UC Riverside on Feb. 21 he entered the game to start the ninth inning with SDSU holding a one-run lead. He struck out the first two hitters he faced before getting a ground out to second to register the save. Over the three games in which he appeared he faced a total of seven batters and retired six via the strikeout. He did not allow any base runners in those three contests. PLAYER OF THE WEEK Steven Pallares has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week for his performance in the Aztecs four contests from Feb It is the first weekly honor for Pallares in his career. A senior from Corona, Calif. (Santiago HS), Pallares led San Diego State to a 4-0 record last week that included a 5-4 extra-inning win against cross-town rival San Diego and a three-game sweep of San José State. For the week he posted a batting average of.526 (10-for-19) with four runs scored, five runs batted in, four doubles and two walks. Pallares was also named the Madness Mountain West Baseball Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA HONORS Junior third baseman Ty France has received 2015 preseason All-America honors from several sources. He was accorded first-team honors by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers and D1Baseball.com. He was also named a third team preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball. PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE Third baseman Ty France and pitcher Bubba Derby have been tabbed to the Preseason All-Mountain West team in a vote of the league s coaches. France is the team s leading returning hitter (.356, 18 2B, 6 HR, 45 RBI). Derby led the Aztec pitching staff with an 8-4 record and 3.08 earned run average last season. AZTECS PICKED SECOND San Diego State has been picked second behind New Mexico in the Mountain West Conference preseason baseball poll. In a vote of the seven MWC head coaches, the Aztecs received no firstplace votes, but tallied 28 points to place behind the Lobos. UNLV picked up two first-place votes while Nevada and Fresno State received one apiece MWC Preseason Poll: Rk. Team (1st place votes) Pts 1. The 22 runs scored by the Aztecs in their win over Valparaiso on Feb. 13 were their most runs in a game since defeating Air Force, 31-0, on April 22, The Aztec bullpen has notched nine saves in the first 17 contests. CJ Saylor leads the staff with seven saves. Danny Sheehan has stolen five bases this season after totaling only four the previous two years. SDSU s.321 team batting average leads the Mountain West entering the weekend as does its.983 fielding percentage. The team s 4.31 earned run average ranks third. In conference play, the Aztecs lead the Mountain West with a.307 batting average and.984 fielding percentage. They are fifth in team earned run average at As a team the Aztecs are hitting.354 with runners in scoring position compared to.256 for opponents. UP NEXT San Diego State will be back on the road briefly next week as it travels to Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 17, for a contest at Loyola Marymount set to get underway at 6:00 p.m. The Aztecs will then return home to host a three-game Mountain West series against Air Force next weekend. That set begins on Friday, March 20, with a game slated to start at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
